I decided to make my own version because I've always wanted to, it's the first game I played as a child and I love to draw. this game is by far one of the most common game gear games, ever retro store has like 3-5 of them in stock, so like EVERY game gear owner has played it. and probably wishes they hadn't.
the pos game is so oversaturated they made way too mamy copies of sonic 2 the game is bad very common and no one wants even cib copies go for under $50 a cib game gear game being that low speaks volumes
I feel like most of us got to the first boss in the game gear version and rage quit because of how hard it was due to the tiny ass screen and wonky physics making it near impossible to consistently dodge the cannonballs.
That M64 painting thing at 0:51 makes me think of something: getting the Star on the Island in Bomb-omb Battle Field with the Sky High Hang glider oh god.

I had Triple Trouble before this game and while that had its moments of being difficult, the first boss made me hate this game and I never beat it. Watching this review I think I only ever made it to Green Hills.
My ‘Question of the Day’ answer: There’s so many good songs from the sonic the hedgehog series to choose, but if I absolutely had to choose I would go with “Live & Learn.”
Great review and honestly I can't blame you for using cheats to beat this game. I'm surprised you didn't mention the horrible hang glider in sky high zone. Took me way too long to figure out how to use it. Have you tried Tails Adventure? Pretty good game and one of my favorite classic games.

The concept for Scrambled Egg Zone is neat and unique, and I understand why a mostly tube based level got made. The execution is where some problems arise. It has two problems: nearly every path but the correct one punishes you, and the screen crunch that affects the entire game. I like the concept and enjoyed the zone, but was disappointed with it often being the case that only 1 correct route to avoids punishment. Tubes only send you back to make the correct choice, or choices, not back to the level beginning so you're not as lost as you might think. You just have to get to the top of the level.
QOTD: Either the act 2 boss theme from Sonic 3 & Knuckles, or Ruby Illusions from Sonic Mania. EDIT: I just listened to Escape From the City from Sonic Adventure 2, and now, it's stuck in my head as well.
4:00 Along with that "knows exactly where they are" remark, it's also extremely notable that when this game was new, *online video game walkthroughs didn't exist yet* (or if they did, they weren't really a common enough thing for _me_ to know they existed anyway). If you didn't hear through the grapevine where those dang gems were from your friends, and/or spend ridiculous hours searching for yourself, *you couldn't just "look it up online."* I did eventually look up the emerald locations online before I ever saw the good ending, but that was _years later in the late 90's,_ where you had to follow complicated text descriptions instructing you what to do because video walkthroughs that _show you_ what to do _still_ weren't a thing yet. -Just imagine me waving a cane in the air while I'm ranting why don't you.- =^p
Fun Fact: While the bubble gimmick is originally from Sonic 2 on the Game Gear, the actual sprite Mania uses is from Sonic Triple Trouble, also on Game Gear: Facing forward with legs somewhat spread, hands pressed against the front of the bubble, and looking somewhat concerned.
I like this game and once you get the hang of it, it’s not that hard. It’s clear that the camera is the biggest enemy in the game. I mostly like it because I like the levels and music
I actually like the Game Gear version... Probably because I memorized it so much when I was a kid, and the payoff to get the good ending was pretty sweet. The SMS version feels like more of a prototype, too.

I compare Crystal Egg Zone to World 9 from the Famicom version of Mario Lost Levels. A very strange, dreamlike world that makes you feel like you've uncovered something special. Both are unlocked by great feats, and neither is particularly difficult.

tbh I grew up on the Sonic 2 Game Gear version And the sonic game gear titles and the genesis titles I got those games When i was 10 When my parents Gave me a game gear with the sonic titles and the genesis with the sonic genesis titles as well.
In my head canon: this takes place before the genesis sonic 2 shows how tails meets sonic. and it gives tails an arc to become a hero and it concludes when helps sonic take down the death egg in the genesis version and it takes place on the island little planet appeared over in sonic cd with green hills zone being the grassy plains from the opening of sonic cd which is later roboticized in sonic chaos when Sonic and Tails try Eggman from turning the island into his new headquarters after Sonic 3 and Knuckles so he can prepare for the return of little planet in a few days.
Tails was pretty much confirmed dead in the bad ending. During the sonc song thingy the sonic the hedgehog official channel said rip tails when that star tails appeared

I think they actually made the Game Gear version harder. The best example is the Underground Zone boss. In the Master System, you have a larger screen, and the boss only has one pattern for the bombs that bounce by; the higher bounce. In the Game Gear version, you have the smaller screen, and it randomly alternates between a low bounce and a high bounce. There’s more stuff like that in the game. Smaller stuff, like adding spikes to the bottom of pits rather than a spring on the left that makes you try the obstacle again. And the final boss has a third entrance to the tubes. But as small as the differences are, they change the experience greatly. Also, FUCK Scrambled Egg Zone. Especially Act 2.
Why did you start with the GG version this time? Maybe you're just meh on it but it's hard to tell if you would have liked the game if you started with the better verison.
Scrambled Egg zone is awesome and easy. Worst parts are Underground 3 boss and Aqua Lake 2 (drowning). Sky High 2 you need to keep up the momentum to hit the hidden springs

Late but the game gear version is actually buffed. They added slightly more enemies to levels and made boss patterns harder and more random.

I can see SA3 next. It's not like you're gonna wind up getting your hands on Sonic Colors DS, Sonic Generations 3DS, or Sonic Lost World 3DS (or the Sonic Boom 3DS duology).

In my head canon: this takes place before the genesis sonic 2 shows how tails meets sonic. and it gives tails an arc to become a hero and it concludes when helps sonic take down the death egg in the genesis version and it takes place on the island little planet appeared over in sonic cd with green hills zone being the grassy plains from the opening of sonic cd which is later roboticized in sonic chaos when Sonic and Tails try Eggman from turning the island into his new headquarters after Sonic 3 and Knuckles so he can prepare for the return of little planet in a few days.

I think they actually made the Game Gear version harder. The best example is the Underground Zone boss. In the Master System, you have a larger screen, and the boss only has one pattern for the bombs that bounce by; the higher bounce. In the Game Gear version, you have the smaller screen, and it randomly alternates between a low bounce and a high bounce.
There’s more stuff like that in the game. Smaller stuff, like adding spikes to the bottom of pits rather than a spring on the left that makes you try the obstacle again. And the final boss has a third entrance to the tubes. But as small as the differences are, they change the experience greatly.
Also, FUCK Scrambled Egg Zone. Especially Act 2.

Scrambled Egg zone is awesome and easy. Worst parts are Underground 3 boss and Aqua Lake 2 (drowning). Sky High 2 you need to keep up the momentum to hit the hidden springs
