    Great job on the crepe myrtles. We have to educate those that dont realize that they are doing it wrong.

      Plemons Lawn Care thanks I understand sometimes it needs to be done and if the client really wants it but I do believe it’s our duty to educate about proper techniques including customers. Really appreciate your comment! 👊

    I do murder crape myrtles every year. We have them planted downtown by hotels that want them a specific height and look. They look astonishing once they bloom.

      Blades of Grass Lawn Care, LLC Yeah I understand if the client wants it cut back but we will only do that if it is planted in the wrong spot and it’s growing into a walkway. My issue is when people argue with you that murdering them is a proper pruning technique when it is not and it does cause damage in the long run. They will still bloom really nice because they flower on new growth not old wood. Thanks for watching!

      you can’t kill a crepe myrtle if you tried. If you cut the whole thing down it will grow right back.

      I see that by hotels and it looks like shit. They will bloom really well without murdering.

    Just in case you missed it, Ventrac has been sold to Toro. Shouldn't change much other than price, can't say which way they're likely to go though. There also will probably be a rush to bring some new products to the publicc

    You need to cut closer to the branch collar. You leave two inch stubs sticking out of the trunk.

      You can do it now. Look for the 3 D’s - disease, damage, dead. And you don’t want any branches crossing because that’s where disease can start. Thanks for watching!

    Here in the UK we don`t have crepe myrtles. but other trees and shrubs and most of the time when i have stronger branches i just force back into the ground. and most of the time they re-root them self and then i just have a new tree for replanting out in the garden or you can do in in a big enough pot for future planting

    I have been told that a tree has one trunk and a bush has more than one. So a crapemyrtle would be a shrub.

      No that is not true a Crape Myrtle is a tree. A river birch has many trunks and that is a tree also. I’m sure there are many more also. Thanks for watching!

    I just moved in to my new house and have many large crepe myrtles it only produced a few flowers so far. What should I do to them in the spring to get beautiful flowers. Thanks

    • @happysfamilywnc
      @happysfamilywnc  4 роки тому

      I believe the flowers are on new wood. Definitely thinning out will help. I don’t ever cut the tops off but some do which is improper techniques. Maybe search pruning crepe Myrtle’s so you can get visuals. I use the universities for correct info. NC State or Clemson probably has a lot of good info about how to take care of Crepe Myrtles. Thanks for your comment!

    I have a customer that wants some of the top cut off. So basically, you never cut the top?

    • @happysfamilywnc
      @happysfamilywnc  Рік тому

      When you cut off the top it’s considered crepe murder. Now if the client is adamant and / or it’s planted in the wrong place then there really isn’t anything you can do. If you want more info this is a good site!

    We have 3 beautiful Crete myrtles near the ocean
    We had a landscaper do a crete murdering last season. They just topped the tree and left these branches stunted. What can we do to correct their actions. Alot of the trees have grown fuller with the exception of those hacked trunks about 2/3 up the trees. Am writing from south jersey

    • @happysfamilywnc
      @happysfamilywnc  3 роки тому

      I would just continue to let them grow this year, thin whatever is actually dead crossing or diseased. The. Next winter chose the most prominent branch off those cuts to keep growing and trim the rest. If you notice this crepe
      Was also murder at some point so they do repair themselves if you don’t continuously do it. Thanks for watching!

    Crepe murder should only be done if you want a hedge that flowers ... or if there are power lines above it..... if you want a tree and don’t hv enough space ... choose a dwarf variety...

  • @wayneessar7489
    @wayneessar7489 4 роки тому

    Underbidding could be a cause also....murderers get the work because of the lowest bid.
    The clients need the education and to specify good practices.

    What happens if you prune a crepe myrtle in mid to late Fall? Will it harm the tree and cause it not to bloom in the spring?

    • @happysfamilywnc
      @happysfamilywnc  3 роки тому

      It should be fine if your pruning properly. You’re only thinning branches and they do bloom on new and old wood so it shouldn’t hurt flowering. Pruning is just to keep it healthy, to take out dead and crossing branches. If you want to look up more crepe myrtle pruning techniques NC state has great information!

    If people would READ the planting instructions for the crepe myrtles they would know. There is a dwarf variety but again read before you buy and plant.

    • @happysfamilywnc
      @happysfamilywnc  4 роки тому +1

      Musi Mowing & More Inc Yeah tell me about it. Yeah they do have miniature Crepe Myrtles but they still get 8 to 10 ft tall and still shouldn’t be murdered. I will cut them back some if they are planted in the wrong spot but we also tell the clients that it damages the plant over time when we do that and we are not responsible if it dies or gets diseased. Thanks for watching!

    I have 2 that were planted 2 feet off my porch by the previous owners and I can't keep up with them. I've tried to 'stunt' them by trimming it as best as I could over the last 2 years but it's looking like chainsaw removal is my only practical option.
    One is hitting my house and has grown higher than my roof, they grow to fast for me to keep up with :-/
    I wish they were bushes not gigantic trees

    • @happysfamilywnc
      @happysfamilywnc  4 роки тому

      jennifer fox yea unfortunately improperly planted does result in having to remove is your only option.
      It’s a shame ppl don’t do research before doing something. Be happy!

      Black Diamond myrtle advice is if you want it small, cut back to 3 inches tall and keep the sides thinned through the season.

    • @happysfamilywnc

      No we don’t cut anything from the top. You thin branches all the way to the top but leave the tops with the seeds for the birds. You can also look at N.C. state crepe myrtle pruning.
