  • How to prune Crape Myrtles. This week I am showing not only the correct way to prune Crape Myrtles but also how to recover Myrtles that have been lopped to limit their height. The trees in my garden were lopped by the previous owner and now they are covered in a mass of tiny weak branches stemming from the cut-off point. These need to be removed. There are also far too many trunks in the centre portion of the tree and I need to recover the vase shape which is so attractive. Although I have had to remove a considerable amount of branches the tree will benefit from this pruning and in spring when it starts leafing out it will look a whole lot healthier and have less chance of suffering from powdery mildew. However, since this tree is susceptible to powdery mildew a preventive spray with Neem Oil is recommended when the tree is just beginning to leaf out and again a couple of weeks later... I am also going to train a younger Crape Myrtle tree to become a multi-trunk using the suckers that naturally appear at the base of the tree, so yet another project underway for the 2021 growing season.
