What a shame. I cannot believe a band like this didn't make it ridiculously BIG! I know most of these guys moved on to other projects and are doing okay, but Jellyfish, and especially The Grays should have been MUCH more popular than they were / are. The music industry red-tape bs deciding who you/me/we will listen to at it's best (or worst, depending upon how you look at it). This should be a classic lp and most people I know, never even heard it from start to finish. And I can't tell you how many people I turned this record on to. Oh well . . . I love it and still spin it.
My favorite album for months now, totally different from SPILT MILK, but maybe even more intense. A wonderful band, and a crying shame they didn't stick around for longer.
This is pretty much the greatest thing I've ever found on UA-cam... this is somewhere between finding the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot... thanks so much!
Took a nap, woke up with this song in my head. 20 years after the CD was released and seeing them live at the Fillmore on their only tour. One CD, one tour...done. Probably the finest pop/rock release ever of any band...now that I look back on it - I am truly blessed.
Beautiful song, Bro. Funny coincidence: I noticed that the stage tech was wearing the ubiquitous '90's striped ringer tee shirt as he ran up on stage. I happen to be wearing a green one right now! I bought it last year because it reminded me of the early '90s, Kurt Cobain, and a million other indie kids at the time--Billy Corgan comes to mind... I just got inspired to watch that video you sent me a few years ago from the early '90s and I was wearing a purple and black one there too! I think I need to wear it and play my Jazzmaster in the morning, maybe start the day with some Swervedriver--that's sooooo '90s. Hee, hee, hee...
Yeah! How goes it Dave? We need to do a session soon. SWD just did a show in London on the 4th. They played all of Raise from front to end and then a set of all b-sides. Amazing...
- Of course they wanted to cut you up. And of course it was a clerical error. US healthcare sans trauma is atrocious. Planet came with everything to heal. How about this weekend?
I always figured this song was saying "bye bye bye" to Andy Sturmer... Jellyfish's "Bye Bye Bye" was about a marriage, but the lyrics here seem too much of a coincidence, and "I'm tired of the climate, you are strangely all the way" seems to sum up the estrangement from Andy.
cheers for this. I saw them around this time in Minneapolis and it was wonderful. This video confirms my memory - not only a great record but a fine live show.
All things considered, there was some really great music in the 90's. You just had to know where to look. You can have all the Nu Metal and Seattle Grunge crap. I'll take Jellyfish, Matthew Sweet, the Grays, Teenage Fanclub, Velvet Crush, the Posies, XTC, Trashcan Sinatras, Jason Falkner...
I have had some requests for ‘who is who’. Buddy Judge is on the left with the white shirt and vest. Jason Falkner is in the middle with the goatee black shirt and Jon Brion is long haired in the yellowish shirt at the far right. And Dan McCarroll is on drums.
They don't make them like this anymore ... and if anyone has a recommendation of ANY current band that can remotely compare, please post it here, 'cause I'd like to check them out. I recently read (about The Grays or Jellyfish - Can't remember which) that they composed "inpossibly intricate songs" or something like that -- and it's so true! Never saw them live, but The Grays' CD is a classic to be cherished.
Filmmadman, did you shoot this footage? Mercury Cafe? I was there that night - if this is the show... and I'm pretty sure it is... was standing next to you on the right... So happy to see this!
These fuckers knocked it out of the park. I worked in a record store. Played the shit out of it. Nobody bought the CD. Proof positive that the Grays were far beyond the comprehension of your average radio suckler.
@picchaz I agree - they definitely were. But look into Tally Hall and you'll find the current generation's best. Check my profile, I've got all their videos on there -- make a note to check the playlist I have of their newest songs, too.
Still listening to this in 2024. Regularly.
the best kept secret in the annals of rock and pop.

A+ find...one of the greatest short lived bands all time..
The best Post-Beatle sounding band on the planet.
I will never give up this CD - such an amazing album.
God exists... and has posted this on you-tube
THANK YOU

One of the finest power pop bands ever
This has my vote as the most awesome video on the internet. Thank you SO MUCH for posting.
What happens when 4 musical geniuses get on a stage in Denver 26 years ago? Here is your answer.

John Lueckenotte I didn’t shoot it. Was passed this back in ‘tape trading’ days.
