There are TONS of bands like that from the 90s/2000s. PAW, Another Animal, Dandelion, Mad Season, Medication, Talk Show. While its unfortunate that we never got more, we can always talk solace in knowing we never saw their music decline.
@@brent3461 I feel like there is no world where The Grays are even remotely close to being a better band than Mad Season but different strokes for different folks

Underrated band underrated album, Ro Sham Bo is a masterpiece, really great compositions, really well produced and mixed. Now it's 2021 and still sounds modern, amazing music.
Despite glowing reviews from critics, Ro Sham Bo was a commercial disappointment and was the only album released by the band. The album would later go out-of-print.In retrospect, Falkner reflects that the band was not truly a democratic collective as he felt he was the true leader of the group. This was due in part to the fact that the album’s producer, Jack Joseph Puig, admitted to enjoying Falkner’s tracks the most, giving him one more song than the others on the album. This created animosity amongst the members, specifically Brion, who was the first to leave the group. This coupled with the band’s lack of commercial success led to their breakup shortly thereafter.Such a shame it would of been better if it wasnt all lost in the grunge era my opinion. It's so funny the one thing they all wanted was a band that just did with individual talent as a foursome ie beatles but it actually sent them as a one off to solo jobs .That sucked.....28 Years after
How on earth have I not seen this before???? RoShamBo has been a desert island disc for 30 years now....I had no idea they'd played this music live - Oh My God, I am stoked right now!
Ro Sham Bo is in my top 10 albums of all time. I just graduated high school in '93, been following the children of Jellyfish since Bellybutton, and when this came out all us guys in bands in my town crapped ourselves. I met Andy Sturmer, Roger, Eric, on the Spilt Milk Tour in 93, but never got to see Jason or Jon. Bucket List, my friends.
❤I missed them in Pittsburg pa in 1995 @ Rosebuds. One of my moat cherish bands for being a one and done. Unreal talent. Rick Beato needs to do a review on these guys.... Thank you for all the memories you gave me...❤❤
Mike Drumm, who ran a local show called "Musiclink", introduces the band and is seen shooting footage upstage a time or two during the early part of the show. Mike edited some of the performance footage in with an interview shot earlier in the day (with Buddy and Jason) and broadcast a 10 minute or so Musiclink feature on the Grays a week or two after this show--which I still have on videotape. The band appeared in Denver one more time on a triple bill with the Beat Farmers and the Smithereens at the Ogden Theatre a few months after this, but broke up shortly thereafter.
This is a cherished gem by too few. So many of these songs are just amazing. production on point. Everyone I've shared this with feels an instant connection with this album. UGH!
Note how the bass duties switch between Jon Brion (on the far right) and Jason Falkner (in the middle) depending on the song. Jon only plays bass on one song that he sings (Not Long For This World) and Jason only plays bass on two songs that he sings (Eloquence and Spooky). They switch off on bass on the songs sung by Buddy (on the far left). Both of them sound awesome on bass---no wonder they did it this way!
I picked this CD up a couple weeks ago, having recognized the band from Beavis and Butt-Head. They scathed the song, but I enjoyed it enough to take a chance on the record when I saw it. And I am goddamn glad I did.
Wow. Hardly any comments here. I loved RoShamBo right away. Seeing this band live on YT is such a treat. Thanks for the upload. At least there are a bunch of Jellyfish live vids but not so with The Grays. Does anyone know if they recorded any more music. Spotify has a cover of Outdoor Miner but I keep hoping someone has some gems hidden away. Anyway, peace all.
I was a local part time DJ when this came out. Was certain the record and the band would blow up because it was so good. I played the hell out of it. It’s a brutal business.
Hard to believe that it's already been 27 years since the debut release. I was rocking this CD out for months. Too bad they couldn't have done better than the super 8 footage though.
The ultimate power pop show of the 90s would have been The Semantics opening for The Grays. Two bands that should have been huge, but came out at the exact wrong time.
The best band in history to never round first base.
1000%

Why can’t a new band be this good? Green Day couldn’t touch their material.
Appreciate it!!!!!!

Who has underrated them? Every review I have seen has been positive.

I used to watch Musiclink constantly back then. I wish the episodes were out on UA-cam to revisit.

Vintage Mustang basses can be awesome!
Holy sh!t, thank you! Had no idea they ever toured and playing in one of my favorite cities to boot!
27:27, I've watched this concert so many times but I still smile when I see that and the handshake. So wholesome.
Crazy to see an early rendition of “eloquence” guessing it was meant to be a grays song

Very Best Years is such a jewel of a song- The Grays should have been much more successful with all the talent. Jason & Jon are terrific songwriters.

Love the Grays and all Falkner solo stuff
God damn... My Home is Not a House into Not Long for This World, both of them kicking some royal ass. What a great concert.
That is some great Power Pop. On a level with the Posies.
@@stonedog1000 That's exactly who I thought of the first time I listened to the Ro Sham Bo album.
To all drummers: it’s ok to play semi quiet ie . ‘piano’. Dynamics are key to musicality
thanks a lot.if the music industry was about music these guys would be one of the top acts.
Ive got a lovely idea.... this music on a stage in LA soon ..

Diggin the tuck and roll by Kustom. These guys sound great. I hope all is well there, RockbearSF.
Thank you for posting this. I never thought I’d hear Both Belong live.
Sounds a little bit like "Rain" by The Beatles.
Amazing show from a short-lived band. Thanks for posting.
