  • Pecos National Historical Park & Exploring the Pecos Mountains
In this video we are exploring all around Pecos, New Mexico
The Pecos mountains is a section of the Santa Fe National Forest just NE of Santa Fe. It can be accessed from the town of Pecos, NM and the wilderness opportunities are abundant! This is a very popular wilderness area for backpackers.
We start our day trip visiting the Pecos National Historical Park. This was a National Monument until it converted to a National Historical Park in the 1990s. Ruins from the ancient pueblos are here, along with the remnants of the Franciscan church that was established when the Spanish came through and tried to convert the natives. This area is the site of the notable 'Battle of Glorieta Pass' which is known as the Gettysburg of the West. The Confederate soldiers were trying to take over the West, and in this key battle in 1862, the Union Army defeated the Confederates in just three days of fighting. The area is so deep with history, and the views are incredible!
After visiting the Pecos National Historical Park, we make our way up highway 63 to explore the Pecos Wilderness and stop in to a few campgrounds. I was curious how this area fared after the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon Fire this past year. This canyon survived the blaze, the forest is still damaged from the fire reaching the other side of the mountain, so erosion and flash flooding will continue to be a problem.
Many areas along 63 are now designated a state park with the newly formed "Pecos Canyon State Park' There are a few new campgrounds that have been established with the State Park. Pecos Canyon State Park is still under development.
We stop in at the intersection in Tererro, NM where the highway crosses the Pecos river and the highway goes to the Holy Ghost Campground. We stop at the Cowles Ponds and see the turn off to Winsor Trail. Winsor Trail is a 13.5 mile out and back (13.5 miles round trip) hike to Santa Fe Baldy at 12,632'. From this stop we traveled three more miles to Jack's Creek Campground, one of my favorite campgrounds in the Pecos. It was surprisingly empty over Labor Day Weekend.
On the way back home, we find a historical marker with a memorial to the volunteers who fought with the Union Soldiers at the Battle of Glorieta Pass on highway 50.
I hope you enjoyed this tour of the Pecos!

    Thanks for sharing! Well done.
Interestingly I just concluded the Pueblo Revolt timeline in Paul Horgan's Pulitzer prize winning book 'Great River' , so seeing your wonderful video has greater significance for me.

      @@SwiftyTravels Your welcome!
I'm sure you would enjoy the read. It is an in depth study of the history of the Rio Grande played in American history.
Paul Horgan attended New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell and the campus library is named after him. I'm a high school graduate, class of '71, thus my appreciation and interest.

My grandparents owned a cabin in the 70's just two miles from Jack's Creek Campground. I spent many summers and winters there playing along the creek, watching for the Timber Wolves and walking with my family to the General Store. Both my grandparents' and my husband's ashes were spread in the creek on that property in 2010 and 2020, respectively. The original cabin is gone and another sits in it's place, but it has been abandoned for more than 12 years. I love that drive, but used to panic as a little girl passing logging trucks coming and going on that skinny road with no guardrails! Sad to see the Tererro General Store is permanently close. In August 2010 they had the bird feeders out and the number of hummingbirds around was massive!

I love having historical exhibits providing historical context at National Parks. The reconstructed kiva is fascinating to see. The Glorieta Pass area looks beatiful with great views of the two mountain ranges and the valley in between. The ruins in the area and the 1717 church are fascinating to see. Thanks for taking us along on this historical tour!

Stunning National Park! Didn't know about the fire last year and just $10 to camp? Def a must do! Great memorial at the end, so easy to miss these things sometimes when we look for "the spot", glad you highlighted it!

The park is not hard to access- the main road is a fairly straight one, but I'm not sure they have designated RV. parking, you may want to call and ask, but I think it would probably be fine if you go early when it's not crowded. Here is a birds eye view where you can see the parking areas - copy and paste into google earth.google.com/web/search/Pecos+National+Historical+Park,+Pecos,+NM/@35.54930495,-105.68671861,2097.5237394a,981.92910231d,35y,0h,0t,0r/data=CigiJgokCbusxDG6jkVAEQczXkaJiEVAGbo9S1irVClAIdhUNe_LMilA

@@DianesPaperArtI live in Pecos and only a mile from the park. Yes it does have a parking area for RVs and what you have to do is you'll come to a split in the road going into the park after turning off of N.M. 63 and you're going to want to stay to the left of the split and it'll take you to an overflow parking area where you can park. Then if you want to visit the visiting area and see all the cool stuff in there there's a walking trail that is really fun to go down and it takes you right to the visiting area. And I'd try to go there during a work day and they'll hardly be anyone else there.
