      We love roasted sweet potatoes. As long as we cure them at least three weeks, no problem cubing and roasting. Delicious. Our favorite way. I do pressure can them as well. Not as good but food on the shelf is better than nothing.

      @@GeorgiasGardenI just found out my soil is too alkaline. I'm going to get pete moss and perlite now. I'll add ammonium sulfate and pray I can lower the pH by a complete point. I knew my season was way too short, but I grow them in a high tunnel with a low tunnel at both ends of the season. The low tunnels come off when I roll up the sides and this year I'm planting in the center so when I roll the sides down they don't get frost kissed. I normally won't go to this much trouble to grow something, but you've got to understand, these are sweet potatoes. PS I'm in a Northern Utah Rocky Mountain short season zone 5 valley

    Little ones make good fries stovetop or baked in oven. Good harvest. The bigger the better, great for pies and casseroles. Use a cake mixer it will catch most of the strings. Always trim both ends before cooking. Always cure them first. You can overwinter the small ones for slips and never buy again. You are correct, never throw any food away. Its all God's gift.

    Not sure which was more impressive... the footlong pounders or his guns.
    Good video.
    NOTES:
    - the finglerlings (smaller finger-like potatoes) are more tasty. Definitely don't toss them.
    - for the more "seasoned" viewers... look into container or bag growing. Results are more concentrated and you can elevate your work space. My back went into spasms just WATCHING that lad pulling roots and turning that gardening fork.
    Again, good video. Appreciated.

Using raised beds, grow bags, containers & some ground I have zucchini, tomatoes, peppers, asparagus, sunchokes, purple & orange sweet potatoes, cucumbers, garlic, green onions, lettuces, green & asparagus beans along with a whole array of herbs growing . I am a retired nurse & am trying to get the message out for younger people to garden. Where there is a will there is a way !
    I almost forgot about the broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, strawberries, blueberries, dwarf apple (3) & dwarf pear(2) trees !

    One thing they never tell you in sweet potato growing videos is how low the soil ph needs to be. I have always got some sweet potatoes but never thought to check the ph requirements. I will start trying to acidify the soil starting tomorrow with peat moss and ammonium sulfate in the 4 x 45 ft row in my high tunnel with a low tunnel inside until it warms up enough, then put back on at the end of the season and a lot of prayer

    The wireworms don't seem to like the Japanese reds as much as the orange ones. We always do well with them! And yes, aging them is important. I wash them then spread them on an empty countertop for a week till they darken and dry. Steaming or boiling works better for the red ones. They tend to be too dry otherwise. We had dozens of little ones, we boiled them and they were delicious!

      That's great that you're getting back to gardening. Plant those slips as soon as the last frost is over. Amend the soil with lots of compost and work it into the soil as deep as you can so the soil is very loose, add some organic fertilizer and you're ready to plant.

    • @petebeasttexashomesteading
      @petebeasttexashomesteading  6 місяців тому

      The right way to grow them is on a plot of land, not a raised bed so the vines can root when they touch the ground and make more sweet potatoes. If you prepare the ground properly by tilling in compost, then planting the slips. The sweet potato vines should grow thick enough to keep the weeds down as long as you water them enough.

    • @riveryzen
      @riveryzen Рік тому +2

      It's all personal preference on what type of sweet potatoes to get. I prefer Asian varieties such as Korean sweet potatoes. If you can't find any slips online to buy, just go to an Asian grocery store and buy the sweet potatoes there. You can grow slips from them. The texture and taste of Asian varieties are different than the typical ones grown in the US. I would recommend you go buy different types and eat them to see which types you like before trying to grow them.
