I'm working on this concept, too, and my best tip is "buy it when you get there." Maybe you will eventually come home with more stuff than you brought (and a heavier suitcase) but for most of your trip it will be lighter. For example, if you MIGHT need a jacket or sweater for a chilly day but you're not sure, then buy it at your destination. Some of my favorite sweaters are ones I bought in France for exactly this reason. Ditto shoes, if you MIGHT need fancy shoes for a special occasion, then buy them while you're there. Part of the fun of any vacation is shopping, after all. And only take enough toiletries to get you through the first couple of days and buy the rest as needed or use the ones provided by the hotel. Also, I carry a compact, collapsible duffle bag to bring home clothes and/or souvenirs that might not fit in my carry on. You can check one of the bags coming home if you have to.
@@lisalu910 I read a travel blog by a guy who says he carries a thermal undershirt in the summer, instead of a jumper, in case of chilly days. First time traveler and this helped so much. I'm only traveling 5 days max, but I was stressing out since it's literally my first time traveling and years since I traveled through an airplane. Last and first time I got in an airplane was a small one I was 14, it's been about 10 years since then. My husband and I are traveling to Washington over the summer and heading to three different cities, one of them being Seattle. My husband was asking me if we needed to bring a raincoat or something, and I told him I'm not sure. Definitely need to look into the weather and do my research on summer weather for Washington specifically the areas we'll be in for those 4 days.
Wow, 8 weeks! I would def be bringing a medium suitcase and be backing for 2 weeks with some extra pieces to mix in. Plus, being in europe, you'll probably do some extra shopping ;). Glad you liked the video! What part of Europe are you going to??! x

Hi Sherides, how exciting to go on a cruise on the med! I've only taken the ferries vs a cruise but have never had luggage getting stollen (knock on wood). As for the Master Packing list, unfortunately, there wasn't a way for me to make it as a download so I've recommended everyone to make their own master packing list so they can refer back to it for any upcoming trips.
@@Susanarylanderyou can do better than that. I suggest laundry sheets. Much lighter and more compact than a bar of soap (especially if you can get an idea of how many times you'll need to handwash while away). When drying a shirt I always hope the hotel will have hangers that can be removed from the closet. So much better to drip dry on a hanger - better shape, no need to iron. But tossing over shower rail works too (especially if you place it over a clean towel. And don't forget to wring it dry wrapped in a towel before you hang it up - fast tracks drying time)
I created an online list years ago and, like you, I constantly tweak it. I love your idea of color-coding while you pack. A tip I learned from someone online is to turn your underwear inside out so that u can wear them 2x. I hate washing clothes while travelling but your hairdryer tip is a good one. Color coordinating is key with olive greens and khaki working best for me. I just got back from 2 wks in Peru and packed exactly what I needed: 7 prs/underwear, 4/sports bras, 4/long pants (w/side snaps), 3 l/s shirts, 4 s/s tops, ExOfficio mesh sleeve jacket w/hoodie, Royal Robbins all-weather jacket w/re-movable hoodie & sleeves, Keen's Whisper sandals, Merrell Terran Post II sandals, ExOfficio BugsAway Baja Cape hat. All of which were packed in my eBags Mother Load 21" Carry-on Duffel with plenty of room to spare. It is the best bag I've ever owned and I've done a lot of traveling! In addition, I also took my Osprey Pogo backpack and a nylon backpack which comes in it's own zippered bag (for short day trips and or purchases).
Sorry Emma but I don't have a platform that allows downloads so I would recommend creating one yourself on your computer with everything you'd pack for a trip. x
I like to start planning my packing a couple of months before my trip. I make lists etc. For this you have to have a vague idea of what to expect in advance. Then routinely check the weather at destination as departure approaches (altho this is often only useful for short trips)
I like your video. All of these are good suggestions. But as far as toiletries, I wear contacts, so I need to take my contact solutions because sometimes it’s hard to find them overseas. Also on , shampoo and conditioner, I have very dry hair, so I have special shampoos and conditioners that I use which I pack in small 3 ounce bottles. I pack them all in one hanging bag. I agree for today’s world we do need to pack lighter, but you have to remember that there was a time where there was a bellman to help you from the car to the check-in at the airport and then they were on the other side to receive your bags. There were people to help you and put your bags in a taxi and then go to the hotel where again you had people helping. My mother would have about 3 to 5 suitcases on a trip. We did not have to handle all these bags. But in today’s world it is more hands-on and everyone has to fend for themselves. But I remember a time when flying and traveling was a luxury and we didn’t feel like we were desperate people.
Is there any way for you to reply to this with a link of the luggage weight tool? Thank you so much that would be very helpful Also very good video I found this very helpful

@@SophiesTravelSecrets on the other hand, I do believe that it’s an important part of these type of videos, as it’s not only important to pack smartly, but at the same time complying with the ever more stringent airline requirements regarding weight. No use if you have packed smart… but your carry on outweighs the allowed kg.
For me, it does. If I sweat through my clothes to the point where I can't where them anymore, I'll definitely do laundry. Otherwise, I would suggest packing more if you won't have the time to do laundry quickly.
If it's super hot the clothes (fabric) you take will be pretty thin. This means you'll be packing less. And with handwashing on the go you'd be surprised just how little you need. (Laundry tends to dry super fast in those climates too)

Hi, I have a question? How do I know how to pack for a person who size 18, unlike the smaller sizes shown on shown. Appreciate and guidance you can give. Have a great day. USA 🇺🇸 Northern, California
Good question, I would recommend bringing items made with lightweight fabric that you can roll to save space. Bring pieces that work very well with other pieces that you can layer if need be. Wear your heaviest shoes and jacket on the plane. I hope this helps xx
I also look at the little flimsy things and know my tops etc take up way more space! I use packing cells to roll and pack clothes. I wear a longline cardigan on the plane that can double as a dressing gown if needed. I use layers a lot, and take a black longsleeve merino top and black merino leggings. These can double as pyjamas if need be, but their value is that worn under other layers they provide the warmth on colder days that you would normally get from bulkier garments worn on top. A slip for under a dress can also be a nightie. My scarf on the plane is more pashmina size and wool, so it makes a great blanket if the plane is cold, or wrapped around me on a cool night on holiday gives extra warmth. A knitted wool hat does not weigh as much as an extra jumper but can keep you warm. Also, you don't need to turn knickers inside out for one more day's use; just use a panty liner the first day, remove it for the second (my mother-in-law gave me that tip). Wash your lingerie in the morning shower with you and place between towels on the bathroom floor and stamp on them to remove excess moisture. Hang to dry, over a hanger over the back of a chair a metre or more away from a heater or heat vent, or on a shrub on a private verandah.
Adding to mamabear, if going to a hot climate, a (opaque) kimono can function better than long line cardi. And I take 1 of those pocket rain jackets - not just for rain but it's amazing how warm they can be (and you can get some pretty stylish looking ones - for hot weather you *don't* want a lined one). Also, a sarong or Turkish towel is so much better than a blanket scarf or Pashmina if headed to a hot location. But I've done holidays to severe cold (for almost 2 months) carryon only; and I'm size 18. It's doable, you just gotta be smart, ruthless and think outside the box
Thanks from this brand-new subscriber! Yes to cutting back. I dropped the weight of my carry-on rolling suitcase from 30 to 25 pounds just by removing items I really didn't need to bring. I still have great outfits packed! 😊👏❤️🧳✈️
I thought about doing that but wasn't sure how to share with the public. I would suggest writing up one on your laptop that you can keep for reference. ;)
Sorry Terra but I don't have a platform that allows downloads so I would recommend creating one yourself on your computer with everything you'd pack for a trip. x
You can still take enough for two weeks but still travel light as two days are travelling and you wear the coat and the boots or trainers going as well as a hoodie/cardigan and you will wear that on the way home too... you take thin lightweight layers so you can take 12 outfits by good packing! you didn't really say much accept half the items and rewear which isn't really a tip! i can fit 2 weeks of clothing in a personal item with ease by chosing the correct items and packing like a pro!
Sorry but I don't have a platform that allows downloads so I would recommend creating one yourself on your computer with everything you'd pack for a trip. x
Since everyone is saying to pack lighter, here’s a situation. I am invited to a nice evening dinner on my vacation and I don’t have nice shoes to go with it. I have a nice black dress, but since everyone says take three pair of shoes,!!! I don’t have evening shoes to go with it. So now I probably will have to go buy another pair of shoes while I have many shoes at home. This thing of packing so light is for people that usually don’t go to formal events.
Nice dinner or formal dinner?? Because unless it's super formal I'd suggest you just get yourself a cute pair of foldable ballet flats. Can get some really nice ones. I recently did carryon only 7 week winter trip in Canada. Wore snowboots on plane and took foldable ballet flats as my *only* other pair of shoes. Many family Xmas events + dinners in some pretty swanky hotels - no problem. And really, unless this is a networking event, does it really matter what shoes you're wearing?
When I was staying in a London youth hostel, I helped an American girl get her luggage to the airport to fly home. She had two huge suitcases to check in and she couldn't even lift them on her own. Ridiculous.

You said bring enough clothing for 1/2 your days. I say: bring enough clothing for a week. Then, if you stay for 10 weeks, just wear the clothing over and over. You are travelling to see, not be seen. Tired of them? If you must, donate and buy a few things.

So glad you found my video. First time travelling - how exciting! Hopefully you'll catch the travel bug and you'll never stop. ;)
Very helpful tips. I spend 8 weeks in Europe, so its very difficult to decide what to take and what not to take.
Wow, 8 weeks! I would def be bringing a medium suitcase and be backing for 2 weeks with some extra pieces to mix in. Plus, being in europe, you'll probably do some extra shopping ;). Glad you liked the video! What part of Europe are you going to??! x
Really happy you liked it! Wow, 2 months! You must be so excited!
@@lubnabatool3788India is in Asia. And nowhere near Europe.😮
I love the Aveda brush. I always pack my mini for trips.
Thanks for all the great tips.
Aveda has the best hair brushes right?!
Heading to my first Mediterranean Cruise soon and this video has been so helpful... I'm vacillating between carry on or check luggage? My greatest fear is to lose luggage at the beginning of my travels and no way to get it on the ship before we leave dock. What do you typically do? Also would you share your master packing list? I went onto your website but wasn't able to locate it. Thanks for all your tips!
My biggest issue is having to wash shirts. What hand wash soap do you use and is it hard to do?
I just bring a laundry bar soap with me. You can order the one I put in the video or any other laundry bar soap will do.
@@SophiesTravelSecretsthanks! Have never tried one. Will
Order the one you recommend here!
And don't forget to wring it dry wrapped in a towel before you hang it up - fast tracks drying time)
This video is so well done! Great tips and examples in the video. Thanks!
Thanks Victoria! Glad you enjoyed the video!
The foundation trick was perfect just like everything else. I use contact lenses to put the foundation
How good right? You'll never go back to bringing the whole bottle again! Lens case - genius! Glad my tips were put to good use! 🥰
Lens cases are perfect for facial lotions. I love this tip!
I just got back from 2 wks in Peru and packed exactly what I needed:
7 prs/underwear, 4/sports bras, 4/long pants (w/side snaps), 3 l/s shirts, 4 s/s tops, ExOfficio mesh sleeve jacket w/hoodie, Royal Robbins all-weather jacket w/re-movable hoodie & sleeves, Keen's Whisper sandals, Merrell Terran Post II sandals, ExOfficio BugsAway Baja Cape hat.
Thank you for the video, loved the info and cheery tone
Can you share what you use for bar laundry soap? I assume it's one you like...
I now use Ethique Flash Multi-Purpose Solid Laundry and Stain Remover Bar - works really well!
Tide makes little packets for sink washing. You can put them in a small zip lock bag which take up little space.
@@gailstaton4350 Good idea!

Hair dryer tip and half the outfits and wear clothes twice so simple it’s brilliant!!😂
You're so welcome!
Hi, maybe I didn't see it. But can I find your packinglist somewhere. I'm planning a trip through Europe for 2 weeks.
Sorry Emma but I don't have a platform that allows downloads so I would recommend creating one yourself on your computer with everything you'd pack for a trip. x
@SophiesTravelSecrets no problem, thank you for your answer!
thank you so much Sophie your tips are great i will learn to pack too lighter it is not easy for me.
You're welcome Cynthia!
Thank you learned so much
I'm so glad!
I suggest that Tip 1 should be to 'check the weather' BEFORE laying outfits on the bed.
That's a good call 😉
Thank you so much that would be very helpful
Also very good video I found this very helpful
Hi Mirabelle, really glad you found the tips helpful. Amazon sells tons of them which a huge selection to choose from. I also have a packing list, but I print it out. As I pack each item, I cross that item off the list.
That's what I've done as well but I luv the color-coding idea as well.
I’m going to Greece for two weeks… will pack unusually light compared to my past trips because it is so hot there….
Lucky! I want to go to Greece! 🇬🇷
Where did you get that cute sweater?
Zara!
@@SophiesTravelSecrets The color is amazing!!!
I wonder if these one-month-clothing-in- one-carry ons actually weigh the maximum allowed, I.e. 10 kg.
Wouldn’t think so
You would have to be very selective with what you bring. However, that wasn’t the topic of this video. 😉 Hope you got some useful tips out of it! 💡
Does packing for only half the time still apply if you’re going somewhere very hot (90 degrees)? I’m worried that I’ll sweat in my clothes
(Laundry tends to dry super fast in those climates too)
How do we obtain a copy of your terrific electronic packing list?
I thought about sharing but wasn’t sure how. I would make yourself a master one on your computer with everything you think you could possibly need on a trip. As you go on, you’ll add to it. ☺️
I made a huge error a month ago. I had a 29" suitcase weighing 64 pounds. The backpack weighed 36 pounds! I was miserable carting all that around. Never again! From now on it's a carryon and a purse!
WOW - that would have miserable to lug around! Your poor back!
Would you mind sharing your packing list?
Sorry, I don't have the option to offer downloads but I suggest you write one out for yourself and keep it on your computer. One you make your own master you can keep adding to it as what you pack is relative to you. ;)
Great video! Thank you so much!
You're welcome Alisa! Where are you off to?
As far as shampoo and conditioner, usually it’s a very harsh type of shampoo, even though it may have a nice luxury name in the hotels and Airbnb
yeah I get that but sometime's hotels actually do carry good products. Just depends how light you need to pack. ;) I normally bring my own shampoo & conditioners if I am going on a trip for more than 3 days. Otherwise, I will try not wash my hair if I can.
@@SophiesTravelSecrets I do understand I have stayed at hotels that Carrie really nice brands but what I was trying to explain that some people have very very dry hair even though it’s blonde I have to use a shampoo that doesn’t have as much surfactants. I use one by ACURE
@@elizabethhill2923 Totally understand. Of course, then bring mini bottles of your fave products. These are just tips for those looking to pack lighter. x
I recommend a solid shampoo bar. These last ages so you can always cut off the amount you'll think you'll need

Thank you for subscribing! Glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, once you’re on the trip, you realise how much you didn’t need! 🧳

Can you put you’re packing list on here I need something to go off of
Sorry Terra but I don't have a platform that allows downloads so I would recommend creating one yourself on your computer with everything you'd pack for a trip.
Will you share your travel pack list?

You should roll clothing pieces in order to fit more and make it less wrinkly
also a good hack!
Sweet pumpkin pie
haha yup!
But I need all of those extra pieces
When I was staying in a London youth hostel, I helped an American girl get her luggage to the airport to fly home. She had two huge suitcases to check in and she couldn't even lift them on her own. Ridiculous.
Haha yup! I used to be like that 🤣
❤
Can you share your packing list pls? Tks
I thought about doing that but wasn't sure how to share with the public. I would suggest writing up one on your laptop that you can keep for reference. ;)
3 pairs of shoes thank you.
You said bring enough clothing for 1/2 your days. I say: bring enough clothing for a week. Then, if you stay for 10 weeks, just wear the clothing over and over. You are travelling to see, not be seen. Tired of them? If you must, donate and buy a few things.
