- I’m using McCall’s M8415 to sew a men’s shirt. First, I’ll show you how to easily match the plaid, then I’ll show you a change to the front placket to make it easier. Next I’ll show you my favourite way to sew on shirt pockets, and finally I’ll teach you how to clean finish the yoke so it’s beautiful inside and out.

Catherine you are an amazing teacher. Thank you for explaining the process from start to finish. ❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦
Thank you. Pattern confusing re front band/cutting off left front. I was ready to throw entire thing in garbage until I found your sewalong!!!!
I just love this tutorial! Thank you for your pacing and detailed explanations. I wish Simplicity (the big four) would start sponsoring videos like these. It would really encourage a lot of makers like me that are self taught and UA-cam taught sewists.
I appreciate the time and care you put into this tutorial. My husband loved the shirt. It’s nice to have a more formal option than M6044 (which he also loves!!) Tock Custom does a great video of that one. I look forward to your next make!!
I bought the M8415 pattern yesterday without knowing about your tutorial. I got home and found you and I feel so lucky! I watched all the videos but haven't started yet, but I can't wait to sew along with you. I have never done a collar before but I know that I will be in good hands with your detailed instructions. Thank you for putting this out there! :)
That’s so perfect! I look forward to hearing how it goes!
Yeah, finally someone doing men's clothing! Thank you!
I love the way you sewed the yoke, it's easier than the burrito method.
Keeping the tension front and back was a trick I learned from Sandra Betzina back in the 90s! I was lucky enough to attend one of her classes back then, she’s so awesome.
Wow, learning from a master! I would’ve loved to attend that!
You've got such skill at teaching. Thanks for explaining everything so well. Making the not so obvious.....obvious. Much appreciated!!!!
Thank you so much for this video and all your others. For the first time, I am making a shirt with this yolk, and I know for certain that I wouldn’t have been able to make sense of the written instructions. Following your video, it turned out perfect, I’d go as far to say it’s magic (that’s how I described it to my husband).
Now for the next video and collar!
That is so wonderful to hear!!
Wow. Mad props for fantastic plaid matching. 😊. Also loved the corner pocket technique.
I always learn tricks from you thank you so much
You are an amazing instructor. I love all your tips and tricks to sew a professional looking placket front shirt! Thank you!
OK…. Now you have us guys’ attention! And, you’re such the “bully “! 🥰
Oh I needed this a few weeks ago 😂 I made my husband a Patterns for Pirates Lumberjack shirt out of plaid flannel. I always learn cool tricks from you so thank you for doing these videos ! Hubby was so pleased with his shirt, I’ll make another one 😊

Happy Holidays! May 2024 be filled with health and happiness!
Thank you Catherine!
I just bought this pattern a few months ago and did a search and found you. I really like how you're using flannel with this pattern. You're instructions are very clear and well done!! Thank you very much😊
I'm enjoying that matched plaid.
Fabulous, thank you. Beginner here, You make me believe I do that!😊
So many clever tricks for working with plaid! Thank you. I have a shirt pattern similar to this that I’m intimidated by (it’s *just* outside my skill set but wanted to grow… ), so this is super helpful. ETA: I just finished watching this; you explain things so well and I’m so glad I found this before starting my shirt. That yoke bit would have been impossible without a visual. I’ve just subscribed to your channel. 😊
Thank you for showing some tips on sewing a man’s shirt.
Love the plaid matching!
I love your videos and have picked up so many great tips! I don't have a serger, but I have a decent Brother sewing machine with lots of stitch options. It would really help me if you talked about what stitch to use on the sewing machine as an alternative option. I find that topic confusing, and I am not sure if some projects really require serging or not. You are such a great teacher, and I appreciate how you are able to explain things in simple terms for those of us trying to be sustainable and make beautiful pieces!
Oh thank you. I'm so excited to watch the whole series. Button down shirts are my preferred item to sew and wear. I'm trying to learn to sew one with a princess seam. Your video series will really help me!
You are so smart. Thank you.
Liebe Catherine, das Hemd werde ich vermutlich nie nähen, aber eine Weste würde ich sehr gerne nähen. Könnten Sie vielleicht darüber ein Video machen?
Thank you❤
Sew happy! I started work on a men's style shirt for myself previously, but got stuck. I just decided to pick it up again. As always, your instructions and attitude are great. Thank you!
Yay! For part one. Thank-you 😊
I'm so excited for this series!
Good instructions, thanks
Awesome fabric!😊
Wonderful instruction. Thank you.
Love it
Great video! Gotta ask -- were you using hockey pucks as pattern weights? A truly Canadian DIY if I ever saw one...brilliant!
Haha, yes I was! Very Canadian, eh!?
How timely!! I’m guessing any pattern will work with similar details.
I enjoy your channel. You explain things very well and make it easy to follow. I have been sewing for many years, but have never used a serger. Some of my projects I wish I had one to finish them off better. What brand would you recommend for someone just starting out using one? Thank you for you help
I love BabyLock, but I’ve rarely met a serger I didn’t like!
I liked the way the yoke looked. I thought it looked intentional
Woooooooot!!!
It will not move if you use school glue to hold it. A hot dry iron will help set the school glue. The school glue will wash out later.
That is definitely worth a try!
Glue basting! Quilters do this.
I am going to use your teachings to sew my kid a plaid shirt for Festival du Voyager next February.
I am using Lutterloh pattern which have ZERO instructions!
Perfect! That’s great to hear!
'sort of bullying it as I go' ha ha ha
I don't like top stitching. I can never get it perfectly straight like you do.
I always thought mens shirts are pretty easy. Bust point doesn’t matter and sleeves are sewn on the flat. Easy-peasy.
It’s just the collar, collar stand, yoke, button placket and sleeve placket that can be a tad tricky!
Why grade instead of cut all layers in one pass if the objective is to eliminate bulk?
If you cut them all the same length you still have the same bulk. Grading makes a gentle hill instead of a bump.
Catherine I have subscribed and watched for months. Something has been bothering me. Since your friend does most of the sewing sh9ouldn't you add her name to the videos so she also would get prestige..and be paid from UA-cam. It seems only fair for both of you..and such a blessing!
Hi Shirley, it’s just me doing the sewing! I’ve made a few videos with friends but I do most of the sewing in those videos too. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing.
Is this man shirt for your husband or for you?
Sie sagt beim Zuschneiden, sie macht ein Large, also ist es nicht für sie selbst, denke ich.
For my husband 😉
Well I won’t be using plaid! Too fiddley!
