I use the same exact fabric for my dining room chairs last year. It's held up really well. They get used a lot. I'm real happy with my project. I had fabric left over and made a wheelchair Satchel for my stepfather. He loved it. Had all kinds of little hiding places and zipper pockets. He has since passed away but he loved it. It was custom-made for his chair and his needs.

This was so much fun to watch! But I have to say I was so afraid that you would not pre-wash the canvas. You should of heard the big sigh of relief I had when you said she washed the canvas!
A bazillion years ago I had the idea to make a 12 foot by 20 foot floor cloth with a canvas drop cloth and use pics of the family printed onto iron on medium and ironed onto the canvas. I used fabric markers to label all the pics. When I finally finished, I wanted to seal it. Since I am very sensitive to chemicals, I used a water based sealant - and the whole thing shrunk!!!!!! Not being a sewer, I figured out a way to put a border on, and it somehow worked. (And after that I started my sewing hobby)
The moral of the story is, ALWAYS pre-wash your canvas!

Judy is your artist friend, right? She should paint her 12 giant cushion covers, if only geometric shapes, or paint spatters, or loose plaid... The sky is the limit.

Catherine, you are a patient and excellent teacher to your friend. Judy, I have used drop cloths for all kinds of projects; pillows, slip covers and 108" draperies that I lined with old sheets. I was short about 18" for each panel so added a piece that i dyed so the contrast coordinated with my decor. Drop cloths dye beautifully. Judy, as suggested, you should paint those cushions or at least a few. Very fun and informative video. 😊

I did a similar thing with some old curtains from a charity shop. Just made them with an overlapping back and button ... a little more simple than these covers but still look nice.
I'm with Judy on the zippers. I have been sewing for about 70 years and haven't had one work yet. I have, however been using drop cloths for many years. You can paint them, or stencil them and do many sewing projects with them. Loved this one.
I recently spent what seemed like 3 hours trying to get the zipper pull back on! I tried the fork trick, but my fork's tines weren't the right size.
I learnt to really hate zippers when my kids were little. I have managed to put a slider back on but back then we were broke. It was much cheaper to test my sanity trying to fix them!
Whenever I buy continuous zipper I immediately bar tack the ends where the zipper pull can escape.🤣
Had too watch this again it was that good. Also now I have to see about my zipper foot...if it moves. One of my machines I got in 1974 so yeah.......a very basic machine which is pretty much what I am!
I’ve bought drop cloth from Lowe’s for many years.I have made tote bags and lots of other things from them. covering cushions is awesome.

When I made my slipcovers, I had to use two zippers in each cushion. One on each side so that they meet in the middle. I sewed them in lapped style so that the zippers would not show. I'm already planning to make new covers for ten 18 inch square cushions that are to be used on my built in dining room benches. I'm going to try and find the right drop cloth to make them out of. I would also love to slip cover my couch and matching chairs in the same material, if I am lucky enough to find some. Thank you for this wonderful tip.

Good video, Your friend is funny, had no idea you could buy a continuous zipper. What a great idea cause when you make large covers you can never find long enough zippers. You made the process look pretty simple.
I wanted to make some curtains today. Where and how to cut the fabric into 2 meter pieces was a problem. Then I remembered this video and what you said about tearing fabric. Solved my problem beautifully. Now I have new curtains.

Trying to open the zipper inside out... Poke the point of your seam ripper into the tiny hole of the zipper pull, then push the zipper pull down the track of the zipper, at least until you can get your fingers inside.

Ive used 2 different drop cloths for many sewing projects. One is a close weave and the other is more similar to what you’ve chosen in this video. Glad to see projects made from this super sturdy fabric.
Years and years and years ago when my husband and I separated, the kids and I had one of those sectional couches and it was so comfy and nice and suited our purpose so well. But man, what an ugly color! We ended up using drop cloths to drape over it. There's one you can buy that's really long and kind of narrow and it was perfect. Blankets and bedspreads were just too short to go from end to end, and then there was always extra fabric to try to deal with that seemed to always be dragging on the floor in the front. And of course, the all important criteria, the drop cloths are very very washable! I actually still have them. But now I use them as drop cloths lol

To prevent the zipper pull from accidentally coming off the end, put a safety pin across the end to stop it!
I've been terrified to try continuous zippers, but I can see where it is simpler to sew one after another without moving your zipper foot. Do you make "house calls" to Arizona in case I get stuck?!

Hey, just a suggestion for the thumbnail : How to make a dozen covers for under $5 each seems more attractive.
Because I saw the 55 first since it's bigger and in red, then realized it was for 12 pieces and it seemed cheap.

I may have missed this, but what is Drop Cloth? Is it what we call in the UK, dust sheet?
I’ve never seen a choice between ’linen type weave’ and ‘denim type weave’.
Also, I think if it’s 100% cotton I would use a decent machine dye if I wanted to change the colour 😊
Hi Donna, I’m not sure what dust sheet is, but a drop cloth is something you’d put on the floor if you’re painting or drywalling. It came in the plain weave and a twill weave.
@@CatherineSews then, yes, it’s a dust sheet 😊 I will definitely have to go to my decorator centre and see if they have different types as the only ones I’ve seen are the plastic backed ones and the open weave. The canvas ones would definitely be on my shopping list, alongside some machine dye, too
