My favorite part of this song is him having to explain that in concert that the song doesn’t promote violence…because he sings such an angry song he doesn’t need to express that violence otherwise…art and expression to heal the soul comes in many forms
He is indeed a true poet and emits screams that cannot be ignored, which gestures us all to a higher calling. He's a master - the rest of the band beckons him to bring it forth. Together they are like no other.
@@waakdfms2576 are y’all thinking of Lateralus? Bc this song doesn’t evoke a higher morality, or higher calling, but a equally pernicious reaction to the asshole in question. If it wasn’t for Maynard’s preening interviews where *he* plays the asshole, we would take the lyrics on face value. It’s naively vengeful. The higher path doesn’t call for death, even if it’s symbolic/artistic
Even if you don't do a reaction video, you REALLY need to watch Tool Live Philadelphia 1992 Remastered (JC Dobs) Full Concert. Amazing footage and show, it's about 45 mins long. 🤘🤘
The power in this song is unreal. The part at the end where the drums and guitar are going full throttle and he starts screaming "Diiiiiieeeeeeee" gets me everytime.
Ah, this brings me back to my angry youth. Heading to clubs on Sunset on the weekends to find love and pain in the pit. Tool inspired some epic mosh pits back in the day.
Yeah, that live breakdown might be the the most melodically beautiful things they've ever done. It completely works, but it also feels strange that one of the prettiest sounding things they've ever concieved, not only was it on THIS song, of all songs, but It's not even on an album, lol I feel like Disposition, the bass during the "cold silence has..." portion of Schism, and the instrumental break after the first verse/chorus in No Quarter are the closest to that sound. Feel free to add any examples, because I feel like I'm missing something. Anyway, I've always dreamed of a full album of them experimenting within the space of calming soundscapes. If they ever do, it will likely be much later on, because they talk like they want to make heavy music as long as they are physically able. In a perfect world, they would have made an ambient album between Lateralus and 10,000 Days.
@@HunkyTalkenMonkey01 Opiate2 has a really melodic, calming, cool soundscape. I also agree I wish they’d do more soundscape type of atmosphere added to their songs because they’re so good at it. Also Ticks and Leaches does too
@@HunkyTalkenMonkey01 Ya considering the lyrical content the beauty of the section doesn’t fit lol.. also H has a pretty beautiful spacey part that’s good too
@@HunkyTalkenMonkey01 So true - !! A melodic soundscape remake of their songs would be out of this world and appeal to a whole new audience as well as the existing audience. Might be their best seller ever!!!!!
@@JudeZino I actually personally don't agree. I am much more a fan of the original and less a fan of the over-processing of his vocals and the general digital sound of the master on Opiate^2. I think the jam part they do in the middle which is from their live shows is cool, but I am much more partial to the rawness of the original overall

This is one of my favorites from Tool. If you get the chance, check this live performance out from 1992 in a small bar in Philly. Imagine having no idea who these guys are and being witness to this in a simple dive bar... ua-cam.com/video/GVaDy6yuXnI/v-deo.html
Skullz, loving the channel bro!! Watching your Tool reactions brings back a lot of memories from when I first listened to these albums! Keep up the great work!
when he decided to go back for this album I thought to myself "oh nice...definitely worth going back for". Then a song or 2 into it....it hit me. I was like "HOLY SHIT he's never heard the song Opiate" lol.
@@T1cksandLeeches the first tool song I ever heard was Sober (I think this is common for most people my age, old). But when I heard Opiate I knew that they had something as a band that was special. The entire thing is amazing and it was the first time I really appreciated Danny. AND THEN THE LYRICS....
@@mflambert I have heard this song so many times I can't count, but I almost always forget about the very end. I wonder why the next song in my shuffle isn't playing...and then I laugh because I just remembered what's coming. Then of course sing along...."I had a friend once.....he took some acid. Now he thinks he's a fire truck"😂
I came back to this review forgetting that id listened to it five months ago, the first thing I hear is, "... what the church thinks about masturbation." and I was like yeap, skullz digging deep in a tool vid haha
One thing to note about the EP is that while young Tool brings the energy, you can really tell that MJK's songwriting powers had yet to blossom to their full effect. These songs are much more "traditional" in both length and also with repeating verses and choruses (chorii?). Starting with Undertow you see them gradually move away from verse-chorus-verse and into the more narrative format that we all know and love. When lyrics get repeated on the EP, it feels like it is because MJK didn't know where to go next OR he did know but was afraid to alienate labels. Once they had their contract, he may have felt freer to experiment with non-traditional, progressive structures and now when lyrics are repeated it feels like it is for emphasis/impact instead of just having lyrics.
An interesting take dude There are alternate lyrics to this song that replace the lines (from memory) "shoot you myself" to "fuck you myself" and "shoot you in the fucking head" to "fuck you in your fucking ass". I think it's a straight up call-out on hypocrisy. Awful people being allowed to get away with awful things because they have money and influence. Makes me think of the Harvey Weinstein's of this world The other (considerably darker) theory I've had is that it's to whoever the subject of Prison Sex was. It works especially well with the alternate lyrics Really looking forward to the the title track. Probably my favourite pre Ænima track
Instead of doing the Opiate album version of Opiate (the song), try the new version Opiate². It's the same song but with an awesome new breakdown in the middle. Saw them do it live and it hypnotized me 👍

100000 percent agree with this statement

I can never make this song loud enough!
Maynard just kills this. 🔥
Accountability. Even more relevant today than it was 30 years ago.
Best song on the album. All these years, content still holds up.
2nd best song ever by Tool in my opinion, also does not get enough praise
Angry Maynard doing angry Maynard things.
One of the best Maynard screams. Early angry Maynard has a special place in my heart.
Best track on the EP for me 🤘
One of my favorite TOOL songs. I've seen them 11x live and only heard them perform it once live. #TOOL
The sound of a young band just totally fucking going for it.
FUCKIN LOVE THIS SONG!!!

Of all tool- this is the one that 'hooked' me...
That scream at the end is the best Maynard scream, IMO.
Here for it 🔥🔥🔥
Great reaction fam 🤟😎
I’m here for it 🙋🏻♀️🤘🏽🎶✌🏽
That last scream. Bruh.
You need to see the live video version of this song when they revisited and "reimagined" it.
My favorite Maynard scream
you also have to check out the extended live version!
Absolutely incredible love it fantastic reaction wonderful to see you Thanku so much love and God bless always x
Haha the beginning joke was great
I eagerly await Fear Innoculum
Me too!!
Been waiting (kinda) patiently for this one!! The energy in this song is incredible
Baby Gravy. Your killin me😂😂😂
There’s a really cool breakdown in the middle of this song when they played it live later on. Worth checking out sometime
@Christopher Moltisanti It’s really cool! I like the middle eastern vibe on it. That’d be cool if they did a reissue of that like they did Opiate2

and opiate^2 is even better

Gonna be cool to see you go from Opiate to Innoculum
Hard pressed to pick a favorite, but I think this one is it. Been waiting for it!🤘🌀
That's kind of scary.
9:15 You talking about baby batter? "The stuff that dreams are made of"? Another great vid, as always, Skullz.

Hell Yeah, this my favorite from this EP. The rift is powerful, and pleasantly stuck in my head now. C ya next week. & thanks.
Crushing it Skullz hope you do Opiate Opiate squared two together.
I just listened to this album earlier today so I'm ready to get your reaction to it. Perfect timing, Skullz!

Arguably their angriest song at least off of this album
Definitely was a straight out the gate event for the band. Reminds me of Nirvana.

If I could make a blanket statement to (most) reactors it would be thus; they are Reactions, not Explanations.

I definitely recommend that you do opiate2 after the fear Inoculum Reactions once you wrap up the EP next week
I agree with this. He should do it after FI.
I laughed out loud a couple times. You are honing your format with your editing and levity. Kudos once again sir.
For clarity, it doesn't detract from your analysis in the slightest, which is always insightful
“That would be weird” lol

Love the early 90’s bass tone. Bridge the channels on the svt and dime the knobs.
What you get in this song in one day takes me 25 years 🤦♂️

NO.
Lol.
Opiate then maybe try Opiate^2 prior to starting Fear Inoculum assuming no one else suggested that already.
It’s my understanding he’s long since changed the lyrics to take out any reference to shooting because of all the gun violence out there.
I must admit, I am really looking forward to you getting to Opiate... lol
Almost there! 🤘

They're generational...
I don't think sweat got enough credit
Opiate2 only 1 left amigo ;)
Are you going to dip into A perfect circle or Pusifer once your done with your tool journey?
Meanwhile, in the 90's, we heard the lyrics, meh....not unusual.
Maybe we've become "too civilized" ? Certainly too fragile !
Why vape Skullzzzz 😂
