    Question: What brand/model# analog meter are you using in this video? I want to perform the same test on my 1970s Johnson 80hp outboard. Thankyou very much for this great tutorial.

    I was hoping you might be able to help me I got a 1998 3 cylinder 35 horse Evinrude and the coil is not getting power to it I've already checked everything else and it's the top cylinder do you know what might be the problem or what I can check I'm hoping I can fix it before salmon season is over thank you sir!

    I have a 2000 90 hp Johnson. I have an intermittent problem where, cruising smoothly along at about 4200 rpm the engine skips, or drops out, but very briefly and continues on like nothing happened. It might do this three times in a row. I will back off the throttle and it usually smoothes out. I have pumped the bulb while it happens, but that doesn't fix it. Does this sound like a coil?

    So if my spark plug cap doesn’t ohm with the ground wire on the coil pack then the coil pack is bad correct???

      Hey thanks for the video's trying to teach myself all this stuff, and need some straight forward answers, gonna test my coils on my old 2 stroke Johnson to rule them out. Thanks again. (without removing the flywheel 1st like my neighbor suggested!)

    Coils should have some resistance reading.My Johnson coils read about 280 ohms.Difital is better to check IMO

    What do you mean when you say primary and secondary coil? Is one the wire part and the other the box part?

    • @patlangdon1015
      @patlangdon1015 3 роки тому +1

      Both the primary & secondary coils are inside that black round housing. The primary coil runs one way, the secondary runs 90 degrees the other way. Not reverse but crossways when looking down onto the coil. Crisscrossing each other.

  • @kicko61

    A BAD coil will work until it gets hot. This can be confusing when trying to get an engine to start and run.

    • @QQ21vr
      @QQ21vr 4 роки тому

      kicko61 we have a problem getting our outboard to start back up after running it for as long as we want, and it shakes. Could that be why it’s not starting back up then? And if I test it as shown in the video it will read good then? Even though it’s bad? From what your saying? Thank you.

    • @dongarner5299
      @dongarner5299 4 роки тому

      @@QQ21vr The coil I tested is bad AFTER it sat in the sun for an hour or 2. It reads GOOD after it sat inside the cool house. My engine would start running terrible after it warmed up. While I have not fully isolated the problem, this is a good indication of a bad coil.

    I have a Evinrude 9.9 CDI engine. When I have both coil's common hooked up like it should be only 1 cylinder has spark, if I only hook up one coil at a time it will fire on each cylinder but only fire on 1 cylinder if both are connected on ground bolt at the same time . Any Sudgestions ? please

    • @DannySHodges
      @DannySHodges  8 років тому

      coils are most common problem and then power pack get a meter

    • @mrwrenchus

      Used a meter both coils test good, engine will only spark on top cylinder coil if both coil commons are connected to ground

      turtlelove83 - I think the main reason is heat breaking down the epoxy insulation inside. It can be cracked wires and voltage regulation also.
