Played that song thousands of times when I was gigging for a living. I'm a guitarist and flute player, it was made for jamming. Finally got very sick of it and left it behind. Now retired and learning piano, I found it appearing again under my fingers and enough time has passed to appreciate it again. Then this morning I found this. Perfect! This will be a fun Sunday. Thank you.

    .
Aimee dances right into the heart of of jazz.
    No penciled notes on lines.
    No dashes explaining timings.
A little swing to her past,
    brings a glow.
Then from her of love of music,
comes a brighter glow on her face.
So naturally Aimee explains that she captures my mind, my ears and my heart.
Aimee teaches as easy as a breeze and I smile thinking,
"I'm learned some pretty cool things"
    Aimee,
Fantastic lesson. You're clear, detailed ..... and fun !
How cool is that ? !
    Thanks

Fabulous arrangement, I’d never thought to add the C chord in the groove. Ive always played the Am and Bm7 and bouncing off the E in the left hand. thankyou !!

This was the first song that I picked out by ear too. Love it. I play it with block chords in the left hand, I omit the C chord and just vamp the Am and Bm. with single note melody in the right, but I don't sing. This song really benefits from a bass player.

Playing any minor chord add the 4th in the bass and it’s a sus11 chord, better than a straight 7th. It’s a chord used a lot in Whitney Houston songs, a Michael Masser chord

It just struck me that so much of the attention you pay to voicings just come naturally to guitar. As a guitar player, I always envy the ease of the close voicings you can do easily on keyboards but requires great stretches on guitar. I guess all instruments have their own unique strengths. Do you ever wish you could bend notes?

I don't want to start an argument about singing on the quarters to emphasize the swing feel, but maybe a discussion...
When I heard you sing it that way at the very beginning I felt let down that you would sing it so square - I thought you were hipper than that! But then you explained that it was deliberate, and now I'm just not sure how to feel about my musical tastes any more. I guess being a drummer, straight quarters is a little too vanilla for me. I want syncopated accents and tasty phrasing.
I guess that's my two lumps for your cup of tea. Thanks for posting!

    • @AimeeNolte
      @AimeeNolte  7 років тому +1

+toomdog wuzzup toomdawwg - this is actually probably the thing I feel most strongly about. I explain it more in my very first scat tutorial video and in my How To Freaking Swing video. And I think exemplify it best in my Have You Met Miss Jones scat solo (that video is shot in portrait mode because its older) Give me a shot. I've spent a long time developing this feel and I think it swings the most. I'm always trying to improve it. Listen to the Duke Ellington play Bojangles at 2:08. They REALLY swing this way. Sometimes the off beats need an accent. Just not as often as people think. My two cents. I love talking about it. :) thanks for watching.

Fantastic, Aimee. I love this tutorial.
Have you ever learned the tinkling piano figures that Duke Ellington plays in his and John Coltrane's recording of 'In a Sentimental Mood?'
What Ellington plays during that first minute encapsulates everything I love about romantic , jazz ballads. For me, it evokes images of a smokey jazz club at 3am on a Saturday night. I have been wanting to learn it forever. If you would even consider doing a tutorial on what Ellington plays in that first minute of the recording, I would be forever in your debt. 😊

Enjoyed as always. Was curious about the counting though. It feels to me like the chords are either hitting on the and of 2 or let of the 2-trip-let if counted in triple meter. Beat 3 feels too straight for the feel of this. Thoughts? I also feel the walking bass is an essential component of the change (“night’s magic”) as it provides a release of sorts from the syncopated verse.

great song pic! classic. I like the "sing on the quarter notes" accenting.. atleast for practice its a good idea. Like havin a metronome. I think thats ok for learning, then swing it a little as you get it down pat. can you do a stride piano tutorial I'm a workin on da stride... what about a video on buying a grand piano ?

Gianna Giavelli I will most likely do a video about buying a piano pretty soon. I have been thinking about that one. I don't consider myself a great stride player, but I have a friend named Joey Lieber Who does a really good job of teaching stride piano lessons. You can look him up on Facebook.

I have a kawai mP7. its pretty good for a 1900 dollar digital, but when I listen to what you can do with a real piano, yah its tougher to get the chords to flow right. thanks aimee. Ok off to work on my stridin. theres an old obscure waller song "I loves my baby but she don loves me" which I really like. and I'll try the moonlight for sure. thats def gonna be one of my tunes for then set list/disk. you do have great rhythm. I read that waller did his stridin with 10 chords not lifting up his hand. thats som fat hands! Ok onwards for some practice time, "no judgement" hugs my dear. keep up the great work!

Aimee, how do you feel about the stigma attached to this song in jazz circles? Do you think playing it causes to 'serious jazzers' to lose respect? I love these songs as a bit of groovy relief from some of the more esoteric jazz repertoire but I also don't want to be laughed at and lose credibility. I find this a lot with tunes that have a nice groove, strong melody and lots of room for interpretation - they always seem to earn the ire of jazz heads. I have even seen lullaby of birdland chastised as tacky, shallow and non-jazz.
Any advice or input on this? I know it's easy to say, 'who cares what they think?' But these people are often loud and vocal with their criticism and it easy to get tagged as a 'fluff' jazz player and hard to escape that tag.

I completely get that. It depends on your audience, is my answer. I save tunes like this for when I know I’m not playing to serious jazz musicians, and there are people in their 50s and 60s in the venue. ;)

The left hand. I get the weak strong pattern. I just can't get how she is swinging the left hand. The swing rhythm is difficult.
