Played that song thousands of times when I was gigging for a living. I'm a guitarist and flute player, it was made for jamming. Finally got very sick of it and left it behind. Now retired and learning piano, I found it appearing again under my fingers and enough time has passed to appreciate it again. Then this morning I found this. Perfect! This will be a fun Sunday. Thank you.
. Aimee dances right into the heart of of jazz. No penciled notes on lines. No dashes explaining timings. A little swing to her past, brings a glow. Aimee teaches as easy as a breeze and I smile thinking, "I'm learned some pretty cool things" Aimee, Fantastic lesson. You're clear, detailed ..... and fun ! How cool is that ? ! Thanks
Hi Aimee, I've heard your lessons in the past and liked your easy learning style. I just checked out your Moondance video and was amazed how well you taught the song. I'm a yoga and R.E. teacher in schools and other establishments and teach online as well. I am very impressed with your fantastic teaching skills and your voice is mesmerizing too. So thank you for your professionalism and persona!
Fabulous arrangement, I’d never thought to add the C chord in the groove. Ive always played the Am and Bm7 and bouncing off the E in the left hand. thankyou !!
This was the first song that I picked out by ear too. Love it. I play it with block chords in the left hand, I omit the C chord and just vamp the Am and Bm. with single note melody in the right, but I don't sing. This song really benefits from a bass player.
Excellent! I had to play this at a gig last night on piano - totally by surprise, and improvised (I’m normally a guitarist and bassist). So I found this the morning after - you have a new fan and subscriber! Thanks for the great work.
I did a jazz arrangement of this tune on classical guitar some forty years ago and did what you did, hours of just grooving until it was just right. Thanks for the video. Loved it. Had a good time.
Love Sir Van Morrison. Some terrific songs including this one but I do love Into the Mystic and Someone Like You. Your lesson is terrific, yet again. Thanks.
@@AimeeNolte Love your work. Your videos have helped me understand so much more about Jazz Theory. You and Rick Beato are among my top 5 favorite Music Theory Experts. Have a great day.
You are absolutely right about the rhythm. What you are talking about (and you of course know this) has deep roots in the history of the music, like the Basie band for example as you mentioned in another context.
Really cool, tks for sharing. I've also listened to the original from Van Morrison but I like much more your way of playing and singing. So much groove and feel.
Van sings it hard on 1 & 3. BTW I'd probably watch your videos even if you were giving recorder lessons... Thanks so much for all of them. Besides the charming host there's so much super useful jazz piano stuff very well communicated.
Students can't go fast between notes that's why it takes so long to learn this. The fingers won't go because the muscles aren't strong enough. That's my opinion anyways. Glad I discovered your channel. I'm learnin' a new way of thinking & playin'
Almost gave away your age, Aimee, LOL. Always loved Van Morrison. First heard him when I was a kid: "Baby Please Don't Go :-) .... moondance....you make it so easy for us to learn a new song.
Playing any minor chord add the 4th in the bass and it’s a sus11 chord, better than a straight 7th. It’s a chord used a lot in Whitney Houston songs, a Michael Masser chord
you spell your name the same way my girlfriend spells her name, and also im playing this for a jazz concert for my high school and i needed to know how to play this so thanks for uploading this
Thanks for considering it, Aimee. I really don't think anyone's done it yet. At least not on UA-cam. Believe me, every tutorial I've found simply has the melody line and left hand chords----not a hint of Ellington's version with Coltrane.😉
I’m a vocalist, and I love singing this song. I vamp the Am-Bm-C to give the band the feel, mess with the melody and rhythm on the verses and then hit the chorus straight up and hard. Interesting that you do the reverse, and also how you do the accents.
I'm glad I found you today, I love your playing and voice........You'd sound great singing the song Angie Baby by Helen Ready.........I haven't looked at your whole channel yet to see what you have, but I'd love to hear and learn how to play It's too late by Carol King........Keep up the great work Aimee, you're one classy woman.
Love this tutorial, Moondance is one of my all time favorites. Thank you. I would love to hear the complete performance version of it. I looked for a video, is there one?
It just struck me that so much of the attention you pay to voicings just come naturally to guitar. As a guitar player, I always envy the ease of the close voicings you can do easily on keyboards but requires great stretches on guitar. I guess all instruments have their own unique strengths. Do you ever wish you could bend notes?
On the verse of this song I walk A-Dorian for the First Part, add a G# Up and an Ab on the way Down. On "Soft Moonlight" I add relative Major ii-V-I-IV before the final minor iiø-V. On the Chorus I add |Am7 D7| Gm7 C7|F E7|Am Bb7|x2.
I really like this song. However, I first heard this song as a cover by a group called Show of Hands. i didn't hear the Van Morrison recording until much later. Fun video...as always.
great song pic! classic. I like the "sing on the quarter notes" accenting.. atleast for practice its a good idea. Like havin a metronome. I think thats ok for learning, then swing it a little as you get it down pat. can you do a stride piano tutorial I'm a workin on da stride... what about a video on buying a grand piano ?
Gianna Giavelli I will most likely do a video about buying a piano pretty soon. I have been thinking about that one. I don't consider myself a great stride player, but I have a friend named Joey Lieber Who does a really good job of teaching stride piano lessons. You can look him up on Facebook.
I have a kawai mP7. its pretty good for a 1900 dollar digital, but when I listen to what you can do with a real piano, yah its tougher to get the chords to flow right. thanks aimee. Ok off to work on my stridin. theres an old obscure waller song "I loves my baby but she don loves me" which I really like. and I'll try the moonlight for sure. thats def gonna be one of my tunes for then set list/disk. you do have great rhythm. I read that waller did his stridin with 10 chords not lifting up his hand. thats som fat hands! Ok onwards for some practice time, "no judgement" hugs my dear. keep up the great work!
You remind me of the kind of thing George Benson does when he sings ........I wish I had the talent that you do.....maybe in my next life........I'm totally in love with Karen Carpenter......when I die, if I hear Karen Carpenter sing, I'll know that I made it to heaven.......Now I have a second women to listen for.
Et bien , merci , un chanteur me l'a demandée, c'est fait ! La version originale est plus subtile, mais ce que vous nous donnez, offrez, c'est déjà beaucoup et suffisant pour accompagner le chant et fair eun peu d'improvisation. Cordialement, Laurent.
Enjoyed as always. Was curious about the counting though. It feels to me like the chords are either hitting on the and of 2 or let of the 2-trip-let if counted in triple meter. Beat 3 feels too straight for the feel of this. Thoughts? I also feel the walking bass is an essential component of the change (“night’s magic”) as it provides a release of sorts from the syncopated verse.
@Chris Fen... It comes from the melodic minor scale. So if you are playing in the key of C melodic minor, the notes of a Cm6 chord are C Eb G A. The third inversion of this chord ( A C Eb G) yields an A half diminished chord (also known as A minor 7 flat 5 and occurs on the sixth degree of the C melodic minor scale ). This third inversion of Cm6 can also be interpreted as a rootless F9 chord or as a rootless altered B7. Hope that makes sense. In other words, one voicing has 4 different values. Mark Levine has a lot to say about this in his jazz piano bible.
Played that song thousands of times when I was gigging for a living. I'm a guitarist and flute player, it was made for jamming. Finally got very sick of it and left it behind. Absolutely beautiful. When you do stuff like this Aimee it sort of puts me into a heavenly trance.
Fantastic lesson; thanks so much for sharing your talent. Warm personality shines through, making the lesson easy to follow. Beautiful playing!

Brilliant! I'm gonna have a lot of fun playing this tomorrow. Love that E with sharp 5 and 9, so dramatic sounding!
Wow! So much talent! I was watching for the piano tutorial and found the vocals to be equally as mesmerizing. Thank you ,Aimee!

I've had so much fun messing around with this song, thank you for sharing with us!!

soo good. thank you. I've been trying to learn the actual piano solo from the moondance studio recording. it's SO hard!
Thanks! The only lesson I found that includes the C chord. No one seems to hear that. I do!
Gracias Señorita Aimee. This is an awesome lesson!! Beautiful chords to a beautiful song. I really appreciate it! :)

I'd describe the swing feel you were playing at 2:40 as a dotted eighth note with a sixteenth note.
18:19 "Maybe I can show you my foot... don't get too excited."
