Two things: I’ll repeat myself again..1. what I enjoy most about your playing is you give people something to think about 2. You always leave a signature in every situation you play in: Firm/Floyd/Murder/etc.. You always know Tony Franklin’s playing..Very inspirational brother🍻
Tonys bass has no boundaries,, im still listening to running up that hill with kate bush and dave gilmore on a daily basis, tonys bassline rocks my socks every time i hear it,goosebumps isnt the word, keep on rocking tony ❤
Thank you for many years of great bass playing, for great fretless bass playing, and for being one of the very few that actually answers comments. I am glad to see that your channel is growing!
This is one of the best interviews ever on SBL. Tony is such an authentic human being and he has a real working class gigging musician aura about him, but at the same time he has carved out a unique style, sound and approach to his instrument. I loved listening to him and his stories. He's given so much to music and to us bass players. Such an inspiration. There is possibly only one thing more I wish I could have heard him do - a third Firm album!
That is not what I would have expected to hear at a Whitesnake show! It's always great to hear the bass player pushing the rest of the band to up their game. Must have been an interesting tour.
@@FretlessMonster - You look like you're having a blast. And the fun shows from the smiles of the other guys on stage. Thanks for sharing your memories, sir!
Who would have thought as a teen hearing Radioactive and the slide harmonic and thinking it was cool and then a few short years later hearing it similarly in Even Flow with Pearl Jam and not putting it together until reading a snip it of Jeff Ament in my 50s! But it all brought me here.
@@FretlessMonster sorry Tony. It was the The Firm tour. Oakland CA. I think. Hard to remember all the bits from the good old days. Glad to see you still rocking. ♥️
Thanks. And we played a lot of the earlier material on that tour. More blues / groove focused. Especially with the great Denny Carmassi on drums. Magic!
Hi Tony! I hope you are well. I wanted to tell you one thing and ask you another. 1 - I'm a big fan of Blue Murder here in Brazil. 2 - Do you have any news about John S.? It would be incredible to see them playing together again, even if it was just a jam. Greetings!
Gary Willis is amazing. But he may not be the right fit for Whitesnake, Jimmy Page (with The Firm), Blue Murder, Lou Gramm, David Gilmour, etc. All artists I’ve played with. In my opinion, the mark of a good player (on any instrument) is being versatile and playing what’s needed for any musical situation, not about how complex or flashy we play. 🙏🏻😊
Yeah it’s pretty simple stuff really. But it was appropriate for the gig. Some sliding harmonics, detuned the low string, audience involvement - it’s show biz! 🤷♂️🤩

It's just a honor to be a fan of rock music from the beginning of the 50's to the 90's and beyond

I love to interact. Thanks so much!
Holy moly? Who knew Whitesnake could go funky AND fretless?? 😂
Sweet Satisfaction
WS began as a 70s funk/blues/rock group.
@@mikal They walked in the Shadow of the Blues
I grew up knowing that no problem sir)))
The Fretless definitely brought a different flavor to the band. Plus Denny Carmassi on the drums. Heavy fretless funk. 🤪🤩
Oh man.. that solo is so groovy and the sound is incredible...the sound is in your hands!
Tony the man Franklin amazing as always one of the best
I think this is the only bass solo I have watched twice in a row. Just plowing a mile wide groove. Thanks.
Wow. Thanks so much!!
How most solos should be! Short n' sweet. But when you rock it, rock it hard!! 👍🎸🎶🎵
Agreed!
OMG. SO AWESOME. I'm still gutted I missed this tour! Excuse my french....but so bad-ass! Makes me wanna dance! 100%!
The best Tony!

Big fan from brazil tony you re the best!
Hi to you in Brazil. 👍🏻
Man that's some serious groove!!!
🙏🏻🤩
One of the best of all time
Thank you kindly!! 🙏🏻🤩
I always equated him to the hard rock version of Jaco. Always a bit left of centre and played with great feel!!!
That is a very high compliment! Thank you. 🙏🏻
@@FretlessMonster No dude thank you!!! For all the great music through all the years. 🤘🤘🤘
He picked up where Jaco left off and took it further and higher!
@@FretlessMonster Your Magnum Opus and finest hour right got there!
Yes. Had that melodic rock bass. Vibe
Soooooo amazing
Yessssss!!! Fantastic! Extremely inspirational...as always. ✌🏻
Thank you
Kick ass! Now I wanna see the whole show!
There are some clips of shows around that time. Look for Whitesnake, Russia 1997.
I did not know you played in whitesnake, Tony. Really cool, brother.
It was billed as their farewell tour!! 🤪🤷♂️
@@FretlessMonster What a career you have had, my friend. Deserving, sir. One hell of a bassist. God bless, my friend.
There are only a handful of bassists whose sound and style are immediately recognizable, and Tony Franklin is on that list!
Amazing playing and tone
I truly appreciate that!! 🙌🏻🤩
You gotta love this Bad Ass Bassist 😀
Thanks!!
Sheehan use to be my favorite Bass player. You're slowly working towards my fav. Cheers
Wow. I’m in good company. Thanks so much 🤩
Love how the crowd cheered they were so happy it ended fast.
Haha. Short and sweet. No need to drag it out.
totally badass!!!
Thank you!!
This is so cool Tony. Totally funky and rockin!
Thanks so much. Probably your typical big rock show bass solo! Especially on fretless 🤷♂️🤪 It was fun.
Awesome tony i hope to have this tight of rhythm and soloing one day
Thanks so much. Keep at it my friend!
Amazing!!!
Wow. How great is that.
Thank you!!
Tony Franklin super. благодарю за мощное исполнение на бас гитаре.
Thank you 🙏🏻 😊

Ha! Thanks for that. Yeah Jeff acknowledges those sliding harmonics to yours truly. Pretty cool 👏🏻🤩
Dynamite!
Saw him on the Jimmy Page Outrider tour!
No I wasn’t on that tour. I played a couple of songs on the album tho.
@@FretlessMonster sorry Tony. It was the The Firm tour. Oakland CA. I think. Hard to remember all the bits from the good old days. Glad to see you still rocking. ♥️
Groove like you're in love!
A bass man like him is still a good fit for Whitesnake.

Thank you for your reply.
I'm so impressed!
Keep on entertaining us with your performances!
Beautiful bass solo. The bridge pickup is Dimarzio?
Thanks!
Correct. DiMarzio Model J
Probably one of the top 10 bass players of all time.
Wow!!! I’m humbled. Thanks
Awesome
Thank you!! 🤩
Great work with Whitesnake, it should have lasted longer!
That was their “farewell” tour. They stopped touring until 2003. I wasn’t able to join them then.
@@FretlessMonster It would be fantastic to see you and Denny Carmassi playing together again, remarkable harmony!
@@classicrockstation I’d welcome it. He’s phenomenal
The shirt and the bass line hit so hard
🤩👍🏻😂
I didn't know you played with Whitesnake. They're a good Blue Murder cover band. ;)
Haha. Yeah, not bad.
more of this please
👊

John is happy and well.
He and I may play together again but not as Blue Murder.
Whitesnake is referenced in a japanese adult action cartoon jojo, one of the most famous anime ever. the last season
Wow. Pretty cool.
Yeah.
👍🏻👍🏻
"C'mon, we need your help!" Well, Tony sure doesn't need any help ;p
😂😂👏🏻👏🏻
fuck yeaaaaaaaa gogo gooooooo
😂😂🤷♂️🤷♂️🤩
I think coverdale made it a point to draft every bass player who ever played with John Sykes to spite him
Haha. I actually knew DC before I knew John Sykes. 🤩👍🏻
Song anyone please??
This was during “Ready and Willing”.
@@FretlessMonster great. Thanks
missing John Sykes I bet .
No pick?
What rig were you using? Very good sound
No pick for this.
It was an Ampeg SVT with an 8x10 cabinet.
Super fat sound
Who the fuck was going to see Whitesnake live in ‘97?
Haha. Maybe that’s why we didn’t tour in the USA. Outside of the States WS was HUGE. Still are.
Has anyone on this planet ever heard of Gary Willis?! I don’t see what the hype is about, to be honest. I’m pretty sure I’d smoke him on fretless!

What happened Tony; did you play so fast the damn frets fell off?
Haha. That’s right. 😂
along with Colin "Bomber" Hodgkinson the best bass player ever with Whitesnake...
Wow. Thanks me so much.
@@FretlessMonster You´re welcome---Just my 2 cents...Doesn´t mean ..i won´t respect Rudy or Neil...or...
Brad pitt on bass
😂😂👍🏻 Brad’s pretty good 😂😂🤷♂️
This dude can play a fretless....makes you forget about fretted....😮
I like short and sweet, and I like Tony's work, but this is basically playing a minor third really fast. Its okay...
