Rockford, IL where I live used to be US capitol of machine tool industry in early 80. Some companies employed 16K people, skilled machinists, tool and die makers, engineers. Now the largest employers are ; hospital, school district and city hall. Skilled machinists, tool and die makers, engineers are dead. Tattoo parlors everywhere.
