So ! I'll help you on some points : first, the chairs is all about the original story. Drunken Concubine is a story about the concubine getting rejected by the emperor, so she gets drunk to help her despair. Sadly drunk, she goes to see the emperor and ask again for his love, the emperor angry sent her to death. If I am wrong, correct me. Dimash represents the emperor : the chair is golden , the wealth with the demonstration of luxury. However Li Yuang has a more simple chair with curves (curves symbolizing the woman's body) and the red , symbolizing honor in China but also blood. Next the costumes, Dimash has a everyday look because I see the emperor as having more freedom and being more natural than the concubine. Which needs to be well dressed in front of the emperor, so Li Yuang is so well dressed. Side Note : Li's shoes are very wide because Dimash is tall so to not show the gap between the heights. Last but not least vocal facts : despite not being usual for occidental ears this nasal voice is very commun is chinese opera and Li has a high voice because he does female roles in chinese opera. The vocal fry is here for Drama because it is the order to sent the concubine to death. First part was all of my intepretation based on the facts (you said) without the story. Sorry for my english , I'm french and writing this at 2AM.
Li YuGand is 40 yrs old and a treasure of the Traditional Chinese Opera specializes in Female Roles. This performance is the story of an Emperor -Dimash ,and Li Yugang who plays the role of his favorite Concubine, Dimash is having to force his love into committing suicide, and this is their last meeting... Classic story and you miss half of the performance when you don't understand the story!
I think that this is by far the best Dimash duet as Li is so different. They match beautifully in the Diva Dance end, fusion of the Eastern and Western world.
Li's style compliments Dimash's well when you hear it the 3rd and 4th time around lol. The issue really is we listen with our western comprehension of things.
Ditto. Didn’t like it when I first heard it. I also think the combination isn’t meant to be harmonious the whole way through. Like the two voices don’t get along till the end

The musical discourse between the emperor and the concubine around the whistle tone is stunning. I actually love the whining, pleading tone of Li's in response to Dimash's authoritative staccatos reinforced by the whistle as he sends her off into death/suicide. Brilliant! Thank you all below for the informative background explanations.

I love how you love on Dimash & how meticulous you are in your reviews. Now I really wanna see you react to Hua Chenyu, you’ll be in for a treat with that one too. Nunchucks or Child performances would be a good start. Luv from Lux
The Drunken Concubine is Dimash as the Emperor and Li Yugang is the concubine. They are remembering a time that they had when drinking. I believe that the Emperor is supposed to be sentencing the concubine to death?? and she is reminding him of their good times. (I may be wrong) This is a conversation & when Li Yugang is doing the 'Drunken Concubine' while Dimash is doing 'Diva Dance' it is to show this. Li Yugang is a famous Peking Opera singer who plays female roles - a tradition in China. You will find that your enjoyment and appreciation of this whole performance will grow if you listen to it 3 - 4 xs and you will end up really loving it.
Great shirt and video. Welcome back. I agree with you about Li's voice. I also prefer how he sounds in the beginning as opposed to the rest of the song.
Dear Matthew, sometimes it is better to check previously the story behind the song to understand the context, specially in Chinese songs. What I like the most is to learn about different cultures through music. Dimash is a god of vocals, he knows exactly how to improvise and use different vocal resources in the precise moment of the song. Li Yugan‘s professional level demonstrates he is an artist by nature, he is also considered a national treasure. Li developed his act borrowing nan dan (male playing female roles) movements (hands and legs) and singing (in this case like meows) art forms from Peking Opera giving the traditional art a modern edge. His shoes are Asian Chinese Beijing Opera Minister, nothing related to Dimash’s height. My next suggestion would be Swan goose, another great Dimash duo with Tengri 👌
Please react to KNOW. from Marz 2019, Moscow (2x), Sochi, with Igor Krutoy. I know you like to see Dimash hands . Here you can realy enjoy them. And everytime Dimash sang, each of them is different. Then you can see the MV KNOW:
I love your reaction. Can you react to another song by Dimash- A thousand miles a common dream. He compose a song from poetry from Tang dynasty about a friend departing for long journey.
Dude listen to Hua Chenyu version of Nunchuks and you'll love traditional opera singing because it makes soooo much sense the way he uses it in the song. Please react to it, you won't regret it 🙏
Li Yugang is a famous star of Chinese opera. He specializes in female roles and if you can believe it, he's 41 years old! You should take a look at his solo performances, especially of Drunken Concubine which seems to be a very well known song in China. Here Dimash plays the emperor and Li plays the concubine. The idea was to contrast Chinese and Kazakh/European singing styles and they did a fabulous job. Combining this with the Diva Dance was genius and their harmonies are heavenly! You just need to listen to this several times to get used to the contrast in styles and nasality, then hopefully you'll appreciate how stunning this performance really is. I know it's initially jarring to Western ears but Li really meant to showcase his Chinese operatic style. BTW I've read that the whistle is a G7.
Not a music theorist here or anything, but I’m guessing the aim was to have the styles progress almost like Call and response Clash, or immiscibility Flirtation Took me a few watches to buy into this Dimash song, but I really like the blend/fusion effect. I think in Peking opera, one effect that’s sought after is sort of the “emulate a stringed instrument, or a bell” which Li does really well. Sort of twinges or like bounces through the notes :)
Li Yugang is singing female roles in traditional Peking opera. And you are right, he uses traditional technique and even in pentatonic scale 🙂. You have really sharp ear. Drunken concubine Li singing. And the song is even better if you can understand the lyrics. I like this duet, I can listen them over and over again.
Dimash sings the part of the Tang dynasty Emperor Xuanzong and Li sings the part of Imperial Consort Yang, the woman he fell so madly in love with that he neglected state affairs. A rebel army was raised and defeated the emperor's own army; they had but one condition: kill the Imperial Consort who so bewitched the Emperor and brought ruin to the nation. The Emperor had no choice but to sentence her to death by poison, and she was given a glass of poisoned wine. As she drank it, she sang this song to remind him of the love they shared and reminisce of happier times when she was drunk in his arms. True story btw.
I agree with the style clashes at the end of the diva dance, and the ending more compatible, and that Li Yulang’s voice/tone at the beginning was more pleasing, beautiful
Awesome, exciting and very detailed reaction as always 👌 Thank you Matthew and Mocha 🤗 I actually fell asleep just before it premiered 😕 but very happy to be able to experience the greatness of this performance now 😊💯🔥 #buyourmilk #chairslide 🙋
Thanks for reacting to this performance. It is of very high quality, showcasing the art of opera in the East and West. The drunken concubine is Li Yugang's magnum opus to critical acclaim globally; Li is a national treasure in China for his art. He specialises in playing female roles in Beijing opera n thus his nasal tones. 😀
Everyone links the nasal quality to the specifics of Chinese Opera, and the female roles played by male performers...that's incorrect though. The nasal sound does not come from Chinese Opera singing. It comes from the Chinese language itself. Both Mandarin and Cantonese use these front nasal and back nasal sounds so they don't have to sing opera, their speech in general is very nasal. It just sounds more pronounced when a male hits female registers in a traditional opera style in an already nasal language.
Just pointing the part of Li speaks above the Dimash's line, Li is just speaking words to give context to the 2nd part of the Drunken Concumbine, just telling the story, that is why it don't match with the lasts seconds of the Diva's Dance part. Cheers from Brazil!
After many times listening to the part you said you didn't really like....the way you did your hands gave me sudden insight.....imagine the staccato of Dimash's Diva is the hard-hitting pattern of lovemaking of the King and his drunken concubine while Li's 'cry' notes sounded like the concubine 'little death' (can I say that on yt? lol)...anyway then its like they're having a little after 'honey-time' conversation.
Thank you for saying that you prefer the MV, finally I don't feel alone :) everyone keep saying to watch the life performance, but I think Matthew should first watch the MV and than the life performance as they are completely different
@@silviaklackova414 Matt said once that he's gonna watch the MV and then the live version in one video :) I think that would be the best, both versions are different but great😊
Hello from Brazil ... Mocha was anxious just waiting for the beginning of the video ... Kkk the ears back and looking at you seriously. I love your reactions, especially when it comes to setting details. For me it is an interesting video. The song is a dialogue that tells the tragic story between a famous concubine of the imperial court of China (in this case, Li YuGan is in that role) and the emperor is played by Dimash). The end of the story (not in the video), the concubine is poisoned as a result of imperial intrigues. I liked the duet. I just think that when singing Diva Dance solo, Dimash has a fantastic performance. Despite reaching the D8 family in this video, which made Mocha excited kkk. I love his detail that notices things that would pass by without being seen by the majority. Kisses. See you later!
He is actually not singing at the part you didn’t like. It’s talking with a woman’s voice. It was fangirl talk, basically. Yugang is an actor and plays a lot of female roles. And that explains his style of singing as well.
I don’t understand why many youtubers don’t do more research on the background of the song and the performers before reacting. Everything is on google. Sometimes you’d enjoy the performance a lot more with a bit more background info.
Thank you for your acertive comments of the song. I always enjoy them very much. And worth to mention, I am a fan of Dimash in every one of his presentations.
Glad you took time for yourself and are feeling better. I saw one of your non-Domash reactions for the first time and really enjoyed it, but was surprised at your outfit change. Does Dimash not warrant an outfit 🤔🙂

I actually love the whining, pleading tone of Li's in response to Dimash's authoritative staccatos reinforced by the whistle as he sends her off into death/suicide. Brilliant! Thank you all below for the informative background explanations.
yeeeeeey!!!!!! this is my favourite version of Diva Dance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cannot wait!!!!’ :):):):)🥛🥛🥛🥛
Matt, to translate what Tatiana said, "
I look forward to it. Something you are late, young man. I was waiting for you today. I love your reactions. Thank you for sharing our love for Dimashik. ;)"

Dimash is my playlist routine
Thank you so much for your reaction!!!
That is chair where chinese empires sitting on. Dimash pretended He is the king and the the other guy acted the queen(which very normal for male opera Singer act female character in Peking Opera)
🤴🤴King Dimash 🤴🤴
Both of them really amazing
💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
Great reaction, really spot on as usual, thank you so much :) By the way, I've never noticed Li's shoes untill you mentioned it. Now I can't stop noticing them lol.
Hugs from Athens, Greece
Please react to Dimash kudibergen, Lara Fabian, Aida Garifullina - Ti amo cosi. You will love it so much
I love how you love on Dimash & how meticulous you are in your reviews. Now I really wanna see you react to Hua Chenyu, you’ll be in for a treat with that one too. Nunchucks or Child performances would be a good start. Luv from Lux
The beautiful matching of voices for this and their melding together with incredible harmonies love it
Arizona Dear here Matt look for THOUSANDS MILES A COMMON DREAM CCTV it is Beautiful Amazing Touching and his voice is just gorgeous .
Hello claudia I am the arizona soy Dear de Dimash ...hello Dimash 😍😍😍is alien
Great reaction Matt! I totally agree with your opinions about the song!
Screaming for idols hits please;thank you dear😘.I am very glad to see you again.
Great shirt and video. Welcome back. I agree with you about Li's voice. I also prefer how he sounds in the beginning as opposed to the rest of the song.
Nice, nice, nice we love Dimash thank you Matt you are wonderfull
Great reaction. Big hug from Brazil.
I adore this duet! The counter-melodies and harmonies are exquisite, and the storytelling by two experienced Masters is so powerful.
Thanks about the opera shoes/boots, I was going to say that. Bought a pair in a shop in Shanghai that sold Opera costumes in 1981.
Please react to KNOW. from Marz 2019, Moscow (2x), Sochi, with Igor Krutoy. I know you like to see Dimash hands . Here you can realy enjoy them.
And everytime Dimash sang, each of them is different. Then you can see the MV KNOW:
He did live reaction to MV Know at the end of the New York concert live stream.
They made a compliment of different kind of voice. Li YuGang as an operatic female role singer do a duet with masculine dimash voice.
👍👍👍💕💕💕👍👍👍💕💕💕 DIMASH IS STUNNING. NO LIMIT TO HIS TALENT.👍👍👍💕💕💕👍👍👍💕💕💕👍👍👍💕💕💕
Please react to it, you won't regret it 🙏
Yeah, that is a great suggestion. I also love Bullfighting... But definitly nunchucks first.
That's what I suggest also!!! You'll love it!!!
Please react to "My Swan" MV!! I wanna see you lose your mind over those rolled Rs 😍😅
Nany Lop 😂😂😂 Like we all do 🙈
Li Yugang is a famous star of Chinese opera.
Not a music theorist here or anything, but I’m guessing the aim was to have the styles progress almost like
Call and response
Clash, or immiscibility
Flirtation
Took me a few watches to buy into this Dimash song, but I really like the blend/fusion effect. I think in Peking opera, one effect that’s sought after is sort of the “emulate a stringed instrument, or a bell” which Li does really well. Sort of twinges or like bounces through the notes :)
Li is traditional Peking operatic school. He's trained as nan dan...a male who plays female characters and sings female parts.
KNOW from New wave 2019 .Please !
Dimash was sitting on the king's chair and Li was the queen/concubine chair. Same as their roles and lyrics, king and concubine.
Looking forward to this, hoping to stay up for the premiere but if not I’ll catch it in the morning 🥛🥛🥛😀🇬🇧
I agree with the style clashes at the end of the diva dance, and the ending more compatible, and that Li Yulang’s voice/tone at the beginning was more pleasing, beautiful
Thank you for your reaction!
Dimash has a very beautiful Chinese song "Thousands of Miles". Please make a reaction to it.
Finally 🥰🥰🥰 welcome back matt 🤍
So nice tshirt I loved really loved, it's beautiful 🥰🥰🥰🥰😍😍🤩😍🤩
Was so excited when I remembered that today's Wednesday 😁 Can't wait for this!
Finally) I’m hardly waiting
I'd recommend you to watch Screaming. I prefer the music video but others disagree, so do both.
Thank you for saying that you prefer the MV, finally I don't feel alone :) everyone keep saying to watch the life performance, but I think Matthew should first watch the MV and than the life performance as they are completely different
@@silviaklackova414 Matt said once that he's gonna watch the MV and then the live version in one video :) I think that would be the best, both versions are different but great😊
dimash like 'the king' with that chair😀😊💕,please react dimash sing 'queen medley' with super vocal boys.so so cool💓
Ahhh i rlly want you to check out a queen medley he did with the super vocal boys!!! :)
