    [English translation]
    Samal Tau (Wind Mountains)
    Samal tau, my native land,
    the immense sea
What days await me in soldiers
    Remember again and again
Native land where I was born and raised
    I'm not riding, I walk
    Even slower than walking
    For fifteen days of trekking
    Approaching towards Omsk
I am at the age of two cycles, the year of the cow
By the will of fate went to a distant land
Samal tau, native lands left behind
We are like a herd of horses, torn from our native lands
    My mother and father
They are old men of advanced years ...
This song came from misfortunes of sixteenth years
Samal tau, my native land, the immense sea
What days await me in soldiers...
In 1916, the song "Samal Tau" was born. Like the song “Elim-ay”, which the Kazakh people composed during the years of the great disaster “Ataban shybyryndy”, the song “Samal tau” expressed the aspirations and difficult situation of the Kazakhs in the last years of the Russian Empire. In the center of the work is the tragedy of an individual against the backdrop of a general national disaster. The mournful bitter song of the Kazakh soldier, who does not understand why he leaves his native lands, he tells the story of it.

I take this song as a dialogue between a young soldier and a mountain (Samal-Tau). It‘a very powerful song - I can feel all the pain of the boy heading to the war, all the uncertainty and how he is concerned about his old parents, how sad he is as he doesn’t know if he ever comes back home, if he will see his parents again. The song illustrates some part of Kazakh culture and the difficult times our nation had to go through. Dimash's performance expresses all the deep meaning of the song, you listen to Dimash and can see everything in front of you eyes

Insighful as always.... From what I understand, this is sung by a young man who has been marching for 15 days away from home in 1916, after being conscripted by the Tsar's army to fight in WWI. He wonders if he'll ever see his mountain home again and how his elderly parents will survive without him. This resulted in a huge genocide of the Kazakh people. You can hear the sadness, the longing, the loneliness, the fear. And Dimash manages it all while sitting cross legged on a piano bench. The musicians are also outstanding. The kobyz evokes the howling of wolves, the barking of dogs, and the rain stick and flute are the shivering winds. There are not enough words for this performance.

      Kazakh folk song
In 1916, during the second year of Great War (World War I), the Russian Empire carried huge human and property losses. The burden of restocking was laid on subject nations. About 49 million hectares of fertile land were forcibly taken away during the war from Kazakhs. The owners were driven out into the barren wastes. Taxes increased form 3 to 15 times. For the needs of war, livestock and property were mass requisitioned. And finally it came to "requisition" of people. On 24th of June 1916, the Russian Tsar issued a decree that a half-million Central Asians, aged 19-43, were to be mobilised for army and labour brigades in the war effort. This decree was the spark for the Kazakh uprising, although the underlying reason was Russian colonisation and the usurpation of Kazakh lands.
Song "Samal Tau" tells about this sad events for young Kazakh in this difficult time.
The song is about young, about 28 year old (a little over 2 mushels = 2 dozens born in the year of the cow = 1889) recruit walking from Samal village (close to Shalkar lake in West-North Kazakhstan) to Omsk, as he was forced to register for the Russian military according to a decree predating the revolt by a few months. He was walking for 15 days and almost reached Omsk.
Самал (Samal) - a gentle breeze, a mountain breeze, bearing the evening or morning cool. The word "samal" itself is associated with something pleasant, bearing enjoyment. Therefore, Kazakhs woman often have a female name Samal.
      тау (Tau) - mountain, hill.

This is a story of a young man pulled from his homeland to be a soldier. Here's the lyrics:
My dearest motherland with its immense lake Shalkar.
I wonder what my days will be like when I become a solder
Thoughts of you arise over and over in my mind
My precious land where I was born and came of age
I’m not riding, but walking slowly
Not even walking, but dragging myself
I have been struggling for 15 days
    I am approaching Omsk
    I’m twice a dozen years old (2 mushel *)
And was born in the Year of the Ox / Cow (**1889)
Forced by the will of fate to travel to distant land
    Samal mountain, my precious motherland
    I have left you behind
We are like a lost herd of horses gone astray
I have both my father and my mother
    They are of advanced age
What drove me to sing this sing is,
The mourning and heartache of the year 1916…
    Samal mountain, my dearest motherland
    With its immense lake Shalkar,
I wonder what my days will be like when I become a solder
Kazakhs, like many peoples of Asia, used the eastern calendar, where every 12 years they made 1 cycle (mushel). The hero of the song was 2 mushel, that is, he has already overcome the age of 24.
Year of the cow is 1889

Dimash is currently working on an album of Kazakh music. I am looking forward to it, and hope it is released soon. I never thought a young man sitting cross legged on a piano bench, wearing a button down shirt, and no shoes, with three instruments and a sound board, singing a folk song from another country, could completely captivate me. A bit of trivia for you. The harp instrument you see hanging on the right side is called a Gusli. It was given to him by Dears from Belarus, at his concert in Moscow. It was custom made for Dimash by Belarusian master and musician Sergey Chubrik. Stay safe and healthy! Blessings to you!

The tool is called Kobyz. Kobyz is the ancestor of the violin. Two strings, imposed on the kobyz, are twisted from horse hair. The total length of the tool is 60-73 cm. The double Cup of the resonator reflects the tengrian worldview of the nomads-the creators of kobyz-in which the dawn and sunset are reflected, and in two strings-the top and bottom of the universe.

Well, ancient Saks had a a queen called Tomiris. Saks are ancestors of Kazakhs or HasSaks (meaning real Saks). The story about her is filmed recently. And more modern Kazakh ladies who fighted in a 2nd world war are Manshuk Mametova (she is from Aktobe too like Dimash) and Aliya Moldagulova. As you see there were mainly warriors even they are ladies, defending their lands and not much stories about "princesses" as usual in European mind))). Well, never the less of course there are stories of great Love such as Kozy Korpesh and Bayan Sulu, Tolegen and Kyz Zhibek etc. They could be a background for films

Disney is foremost a capitalist institution, I doubt if Dimash will fit in with its ideology of commoditizing culture. Moana and Pocahontas are great examples. For Dimash to work with Disney I think would require a huge paradigm shift coz our boy won't kowtow to companies that exploit indigenous peoples cultural heritage to line its executive pockets🤗. I hope he will be able someday in the future to produce such dramas in Khazak and the benefits go to his people.

@@shrekswife2164 I totally agree, Disney barely does justice to the culture from which they take inspiration. Their music is already widely loved so to combine with Dimash would be beautiful. If they commission him and let him sing in his language......it would be a dream come true for us Dears and him.
But since he's well known in China and Russia, I think that he might be ignored for a while. The political situation between these countries and America takes most of the attention. People also don't really care for those countries. As a matter of fact, America doesn't really care about anyone

Greetings from Bashkortostan! Thank you for being so considerate . In" Samaltau " Dimash sings a tragic song about a young man being forced to leave his elderly parents and homeland and go to war. A folk song in the classic Kazakh manner. In this position, folk singers usually sing, sitting around a fire in the steppe. Kazakh folk instruments are hung on the walls. I think he wanted to introduce the audience to the culture of the Kazakh people. And Dimash chose this song not without black humor. The guy on whose behalf the song is sung was mobilized for the war with Japan in 1916 and marches on foot with others. That is why we hear the sounds of the wind on the steppe, the howling of the wolf, the barking of dogs, the cries of cranes, and running water.

At the beginning of the song on the Kazakh ancient folk instrument KOBYS were masterfully imitated sounds that can be heard in the Great Steppe of Kazakhstan at night. We hear howl wolves, barking dogs, the cries of cranes, the noise of water in the river... //////// The song "Samal Tau" is considered folk. Its plot is connected with the events of 1916. This year many men were mobilized for World War I, which was in Europe. ////////// Young Kazakh boy called to war. He walks along the steppe road at night and sings a song about the fact that behind remained his native home and parents, native mountains "Samal Tau", and in front of waiting for the unknown, war, and he does not know whether he will return to his home. /////////// Dimash sings this song in Kazakh. The song premiered on October 20, 2019 in China at the closing of the 6th Silk Road International Film Festival ua-cam.com/video/1NkoFc-bQ_s/v-deo.html
/////////// KOBYS - the oldest instrument of nomads with unusual and unique sound. The creator of KOBYSIs is a Turkic poet-songwriter and composer of the 9th century named KORYKIT. He was born near the River Syrdarya. He was an akyn-singer, a narrator. He is the patron saint of poets and musicians. Legends of KORKYT are found in many Turkic peoples: Kazakhs, Turkmens, Azerbaijanis, Turks and others. Legend has it that KORKYT young could not reconcile that human life is very short. So he decided to fight against the inevitable death. Dreaming of immortality, KORKYT leaves people, but everywhere he sees death: in the woods a fallen and rotten tree tells him of his death and of the inevitable death for KORKYT himself; in the steppe the grass hobble, burning out under the sun, tells him of death; even powerful mountains are not eternal, because they will be destroyed in the future. Death awaits and KORKYT. Then KORKIT hollowed out of the tree "shirgai" - the first KOBYS, pulled on it strings and played, pouring out his painful thoughts and feelings. He put his whole soul into these melodies. And the wonderful sounds of his strings sounded all over the world, reached the people, captured and captivated them. Since then, the melodies of KORKYT and the KOBYS created by him have gone to wander on the ground. And the name KORKYT remained immortal in the strings of KOBYSA and in the hearts of people. Here is the story of the song:
1916 ... The 1st World War was on. The Russian Tsar issues a decree on the draft in the army of Kazakhs aged 19-39 years. Samal Tau is the song of those recruits. The area where the recruits came from was called Samal Tau. This is in the North Kazakhstan region.
The name of the author is not preserved in the memory of the people. The song has the following words: “We’re tired, very tired for 15 days, we almost reached Omsk. Samal Tau was left behind, where I was born and raised. An unknown soldier’s life lies ahead. Elderly parents remained at home. How will they live without me?"
The song also contains information about the age of the author. He is a little more than two mushels. He was born in the year of the cow. This means that he was born in 1888 and he is 28 years old.
