The movie is entitled The Soul Keeper. I was drawn into this song even if I didn't understand it, and I found out that some lines say: What can grow, grow without rain, What can burn for many years, What can long and cry without tears? Silly young lad, why ask again? It's a stone that can grow, grow without rain, It's love that can burn for many long years, A the heart that can yearn and cry without tears.
+Joie Mendoza English Lyrics: A young lad stands, and he thinks Thinks and thinks the whole night through Whom to take [as a beloved] and not to shame [feel embarrassed] Whom to take and not to shame ((chorus)) Tumbala, Tumbala, Tumbalalaika Tumbala, Tumbala, Tumbalalaika Tumbalalaika, strum balalaika Tumbalalaika, may we be happy Girl, girl, I want to ask of you; What can grow, grow without rain? What can burn and never end? What can yearn, cry without tears? ((chorus)) Foolish lad, why do you have to ask? A stone can grow, grow without rain Love can burn and never end A heart can yearn, cry without tears Baisically, the boy decides to ask her with a riddle; if she understands (which she dose) that he is refering to eternity, love, and feelings, then she'll understand what he's asking her. A very touching song
My music teacher in the 60's taught us this song in English. I think I was in the 2nd grade. I never forgot the words to this song and my children grew up with this song. It is very beautiful.
The words that I learned, went like this. Pacing, puzzling all night long, A young lad sat and sang this song.(this part not sure about.) What shall I give to my love today? Oh what shall I give to my love today. Maiden, maiden can you explain, what can grow without snow or rain? What can burn for endless years and what can cry and shed no tears? Idle lad, your joking I know. A stone can grow without rain or snow. Love can burn for endless years and a heart can weep and shed no tears. I don't think there is an exact translation, but all are very similar. I have not seen the movie or even knew there was one until a few years ago. I did read info about this young woman in the story and that she was killed, but I can't remember if it was the Nazis or the Russians.

@AuroraOnVenice : I apologise for the blunder... still i love the song and the voice.. even after 30 minutes of googling, i still have not been able to find the singer.. do u know the singer? also andrea still looks feminine to me, maybe its because of noon-familiarity with native Italian sensibilities... anyway, thank you so much for ur clarification..
