  • SpaceX debuted its new Gen 3 Starlink Standard system in November, offering it up as an option for new customers alongside the original Gen 2 Starlink Standard - which was renamed the "Standard Actuated" to reflect it's pole-mount auto-aiming mechanism.
    These two options have existed side-by-side since then - but no longer.
    As of yesterday - SpaceX has removed the Starlink Actuated option for new customers, seemingly discontinuing the older model in the USA.

    Just pleased I recently got Gen 2 Starlink for full time off grid living in the UK and Ireland. Converting to 12 volt completed the system. I now have fast, low powered Internet with speeds of around 120 - 250mpps instead of almost non existent 4G and no other options in the wilds of Wales.

    Salut! Just some info, Gen 2 is still available as the only option in Europe for Standard users. No Gen 3 yet. But the Gen 2 is selling at a 50% off discount. They are probably trying to sell off the remaining Gen 2 stock to their clients outside of the US. Gen 2 works perfectly for us in France.

    Starlink decided to reorient my dish for satellites over the ocean instead of north pointing land satellites.Hopefully, that was a 1 time adjustment because I don't like going up on the roof to make adjustments. Gen 2 handled the new orientation, but a change in direction caused the wind to move the dish.

    • @MobileInternetResourceCenter
      @MobileInternetResourceCenter  5 місяців тому

      Starlink has made adjustments to some dishes on the coast to make use of less utilized satellites over the ocean. Since the Gen 2 auto aims this was an easy change for them to make in the software and let them update their direction automatically.
      Knowing the Gen 3 doesn't auto orient itself, it likely they wouldn't make a change to your dish once setup, but perhaps during the initial setup if it wants you to point it that way, it will instruct you to do so and then it won't need to move again.

    Gen 1 until it breaks. Was a beta tester - motor is showing signs of wear and when it fully dies I'll likely upgrade. The Gen 3 kickstand is removable and Starlink makes a pole adapter that slides in it's place so it can also be used on any kind of mast just as the Gen 2 was.

    Keeping Gen 1 for as long as I can. I can set it on the roof of the RV strap it down and it finds the signal. With gen 3 I would need to align it while on the RV roof then hope a gust of wind doesn’t blow it off signal or even off the roof. Really seems like a step backwards.

    • @MobileInternetResourceCenter
      @MobileInternetResourceCenter  5 місяців тому

      The Gen 1 was a great dish and has been popular for many users to hang on to. We have team members still using the Gen 1 also.
      While the Gen 3 does have an optimal direction the app will instruct a user to point it, it doesn't have to be perfect and will still work if misaligned or even laid flat.
      Many people have experimented with the Gen 2's laid flat and they continue to work very well. There is no reason that the Gen 3 with a wider field of view would not do just as well if not better if laid flat.
      The pole mounting options have been popular with RVers for the Gen 2 and will probably continue to be popular with the Gen 3's.
      Another option would be attaching magnets to the kickstand to hold it in place once on your roof so the wind can't move it or blow it off. For RV roofs that aren't metal, a simple metal plate can be attached to the roof to set it on.
      As more consumers move to the Gen 3, we'll see more creative ideas that users come up with on how to use them on RVs.

      The Gen 2 is going to stay relevant for awhile and still provide great service. If you are using in a portable fashion, the thinner size of the Gen 3 is certainly very noticeable when carrying it and should be easier to store although it is 3" taller and wider, but a lot thinner.

    I run a mobile farmers market and have been considering switching all our internet to Starlink as none of the locations overlap and the ability to move it to areas where cell coverage might not be great is a plus. All depends on how you intend to set it up physically (just deploy on the ground, install on a pole, wire runs, etc) and what plan you have it on. Mobile just works once on, Standard/Priority requires changing your address which adds a few minutes.

    • @MobileInternetResourceCenter

      I agree that high winds would be a concern
      I'm not sure if you are looking for a permanent install on a house or perhaps semi permanent while stationary on an RV.
      The attached kickstand has 2 screw holes that could be used to hold it down to a flat surface or use the optional pole mount with a pole attached to an RV ladder.
      Some other options for a secure but semi permanent install on an RV might be magnets attached to the kickstand with a metal surface you attach to. There are also 3rd party flat mounts already available if you are looking for a more permanent install on an RV roof.
      If you are looking for a more permanent install on a house or stationary location, there are roof mounts available directly from Starlink or perhaps again the optional pole mount adapter and a pole of your choice would work well also.

      Correct, the Gen 2 really doesn't need to move and as more satellites are over head, there is less need for the dish to look as low on the horizon so even the general aiming becomes less important.
      There are certainly a lot of positives to the Gen 3 and the cable being the big one and one we are happy to see.

  • @Venomocity
    @Venomocity 22 дні тому

    Does that mean that once you align the dish in the initial setup, you don't have to move it again? Or do I have to move it manually every day? That seems like a huge downgrade.

    The problem with needing a mobile app to align the dish is that we often are camped in areas where there is no cell tower nearby. The lack of cell reception is the reason why we use Starlink in the first place. We're sticking with the Gen 2 as long as possible. After that, we'll hopefully be able to align the Gen 3 dish using a compass when we don't have any cell reception.

    • @MobileInternetResourceCenter
      @MobileInternetResourceCenter  5 місяців тому +9

      You don't need cell service for the app to work when on the Starlink Wi-Fi and talking directly to the Starlink dish. As long as you are on the Starlink Wi-Fi, you would see the alignment of the dish and could adjust it as necessary.
      Also even if the Dish alignment isn't perfect, it should have service and generally by facing it North, you should be close and then can fine tune from there.
      This is a non issue so nothing to worry about with the Gen 3.

      Certainly Starlink has been trying to reduce the cost of the hardware as the original round dishes were being sold a quite a loss originally. It was during the Gen 2 production they were able to reduce costs enough to not be selling at a loss in most regions.
      The Gen 3 is most likely a further reduction in production costs, but it seems well built and is performing well.
      Also keep in mind the constellation has grown to over 5k satellites in that time and the process of aiming in a specific direction is not nearly as important as it originally was.

    • @MobileInternetResourceCenter
      @MobileInternetResourceCenter  5 місяців тому

      They are counting the 2 versions of the round dish as 2 revisions and how they have gotten to 4 dishes total.
      Normally you see people count generations which there have only been 3 generations of hardware (Gen 1 = round, Gen 2 = Standard Actuated, Gen 3 = Standard w/kickstand). But there have been 4 revisions with the Gen 1 round coming in both a grey leg and black leg version. Really the latest dish should be referred to as Revision 4 if they are going to count versions and not generation 4 to minimize confusion. We are going by generation of dish.
      While the Gen 3 does have an optimal alignment to point when on the kickstand, if you laid it flat, the antenna still electronically aims and would continue to work just fine.
      Many people have flat mounted their Gen 2 dishes with no issues and with the Gen 3 having a 10 degree wider field of view, there is no reason that it would not work just as well if not better when flat mounted.
      There are also 3rd party mounts already available to flat mount the dish. Our team has already experimented with using the dish flat without issues.

  • @ThePuma687

    Gen 2 Rocks , 3 is ugly and huge and you have to adjust it manually. I enjoy the actuated platform because it’s precise in its scanning the sky.

    • @MobileInternetResourceCenter
      @MobileInternetResourceCenter  4 місяці тому +2

      All of the Starlink dishes use a phased array antenna that electronically aims and tracks the LEO satellites without the dish physically moving. Technically any of the dishes can work well even flat, some just have wider field of views than others that allow them to do a little bit better when flat.
      The Standard Actuated was developed when there was less satellites in the sky and it was able to tilt and aim to give the best results. It also has the narrowest field of view of any of the hardware to date.
      As the Starlink constellation continues to grow (over 5k now) there is less reason for the dish to need to aim to a specific location and more often than not it can track more satellites directly overhead without the need to follow any down to the horizon.
      The Flat HP was the first dish released that didn't have any motors and had no need to manually aim with super wide 140 degree of view.
      Now we have the Gen 3 that also doesn't have motors with a slightly larger FOV than the Gen 2 Standard Actuated, but smaller than the Flat HP. The slight tilt on the kickstand is mostly for precipitation run off and the manual aiming just insures you are pointed in the optimal direction for the tilt, but in reality the dish could work perfectly fine flat if desired and even misaligned would still connect, just may not be optimal.
      Thankfully the app makes it pretty easy to aim in real time and once setup should not have to be changed again.
      Glad to hear your Gen 2 is working great for you!
