Let me tell you this, I have version 2 and up to 2 weeks ago, would get 174 mbs download speeds. Then there were 2 firmware updates. Now Dishy doesn't work AND the gen 2 only gets 40mbs. Starlink is F'ing with the speeds. I want to mount the dish on a 130 foot (topped) tree. To do that I was going to have to disable the motors. Now it seems the version 4 is manually pointable. This may be the answer for me. I have not seen a gen 4 yet, only a gen 3. So I need to look into this more. Gen 2 seems to be faster than gen 3. The main problem with gen 2 is that Starlink for dishes here on the west coast pointed them to the west. Now, I have lots of trees in the westerly direction. These trees are NOT on my land.

I think the service fluctuates far too much to be able to quantify any real difference between the generation of dishes TBH. My all-time high on the Gen2 actuated (V3?) dish was 467mbit. I think the real upgrade would be in the included WiFi upgrade to Tri-Band AX which would provide a more appreciable update for users.

Advice, don't listen to single reviews. To include single point reviews like pc mag and such. Either people wanting their face time; or sham reviews only telling you the best points.
I bought my dish; and before I got it on the roof after delivery; got a price increase and them saying if you don't agree with such return everything and well give you a couple hundred back. It worked well during rains influentially, then starlink came out with a new dish you also have to buy (for rain). Guess what; every time it rains now my dish goes out near flawlessly. Then this week after using dish for two years; they will no longer allow me to connect with VPN. Selling out people much you say. Guess the govt wants to know everything you do while musk has big govt contracts (along with military). Think Ukraine was an accident. So I'm about done with starlink based on morals; though it works well when up. I can get comcast for 25 percent;; but maybe their following govt protocols as well; for spying on people. I"ll make my mind up soon. starlink is looking like a luxury item and money pit these days.

Can the Gen 4 be extended past the longer 150 ft cable? I currently have a Gen#1 in 115' Douglas Fir. Because the cable was a standard POE RJ45, I could extend it 75 ft to the house. I will need to extend the Gen 4 cable a minimum of 25 ft. There's a whole lot of electronics in this beast and sooner or later it will need to be replaced.

I have a version 2, but want a version 4 (wifi 6) router. I don't like that I have to leave my old router in place to utilize it's power supply, I'd much rather use it as a mesh repeater instead of basically wasting it. It would be real nice if starlink made some kind of modification in their WiFi 6 router to accommodate all us Gen 2 customers.

Like you, I too had the first beta living in the Sierra of NorCal. Well, we had a rat infestation, they literally gnawed through my sat cable to the router, they killed it.
I contacted Starlink, the only way to replace the cable was to buy a new dish, so I asked if I could buy one, she said I'll get back to you by end of day, but within an hour, I had a notification that a new one was on the way.
By new, they sent me a complete replacement kit, router dish etc, no charge.
Oh, before I used to see speeds of solid 30 to 60 Mbs down, 14 up, and I was fine with that, I could stream everything.
Now, with the new system, I'm seeing steady 300+ down, 30 up.
I love Starlink, no complaints here. And yes, I'm heavily forested, now I have c ell service as well now that we plugged in our account into Starlink.

The Gen 4 is essentially a significantly larger phased array antenna, providing a much wider field of view because it has a significant increase in the number of elements to "electronically steer" the elements for optimum reception, so the dish can work without having to physically tilt to optimal angle. It also has increased heating for snow removal.

The refurb discount was not made available to us even tho we ordered during the time frame others were offered it. We have been an RV system user perhaps that is why. Keeping the RV system and using the new dish at fixed location. Speeds on the new system are way better. Up to 250 where the RV best efforts version seldom goes above 100. Both are wildly inconsistent, but the lows do not drop as far. There are times the RV version has dropped to about what cellular based systems offer, 15-20 down. But the residential consistently beats cellular, never less than 30-50 down. Both are 1000% better than the DSL we had been stuck with for 2 decades. Yes, we are in the crack which many rural areas have fallen in. There is no broadband available even though Fibre does exist within a mile of us. We had talked to Comcast, which had cable 1/3 mile away, but they wanted $21,000 to run the wire, then backed out and said they needed $125,000. So, Starlink has come through when no other outfit would.

In northern California, I've had 5 Gen 2 Starlink Mesh Routers plus 1 Main Router working great, covering 2 houses plus 3 acres on the farm for 6 months now with wifi speeds around 10 Mbps and wired speeds around 170 Mbps. Dishy is 200 feet up a redwood tree, so I'm staying with the Gen 2 until it stops working.
Tried a Gen 4 router and it wouldnt mesh with the Gen 2 system, so I returned the Gen 4 router.

Elon has quite the ambitious plan for the number of satellites he intends to deploy into orbit. With each rocket launch, a new and improved set of satellite equipment is unveiled. Once SpaceX 4 achieves its mission, brace yourself for the mind-boggling number of satellite lights on board SpaceX 5. And it doesn't end there - a whole new generation, the 5th one, will make its debut. Personally, I'm contemplating waiting until after the successful launch of SpaceX 6. What are your thoughts on this matter?

On the shop starlink here in brussels (Belgium) we dont have access to a higher version of v2. Anyway, i'm using a Archer router wifi 6 with starlink router bypassed. No need of a new version in this case. The Archer router does what the next gen Starlink is doing, if I understood you. Looking up to power consumtion, the less is better. So next version is not a choice. About speed download and upload what I have is what I need. So no need for next gen. As you said, they will be more and more satelites, so my gen2 will keep on catching the connection anyway. Except if Starlink decides to push out the old dish for the new dish. Wich I hope will never happen. I dont wanna go on the rooth each to move my dish for any reason. Have a nice day, you and your family. Hi from Brussels.

Another reason to upgrade to Gen 4 is the router supports Ethernet backhaul for your mesh. I was planning on setting up a mesh but with the added range of wifi 6 I ended up not needing it. I bought the refurb unit for 400 and sold my gen 2 to a friend for 300. Totally worth it!

Based on my “obstructions” I receive interruptions every 1-2 mins. I remember you mentioning the dish pointing to the north. If I could get my V2 to point straight up I don’t think I would have many issues. Mind you if I knew about how latency worked years ago I could compare than now. Starlink and you have made it more understandable.

LOL I recently purchased the latest version and yes i bought it to use while camping in our rv. We don’t dry camp so the power consumption issue isn’t a problem. Having a reliable Wi-Fi connection was paramount to me because as you probably already know campground Wi-Fi sucks. As far as set up goes I have ours on a telescoping flagpole I bought from Harbor Freight which I modified to accept the Starlink wall mount. Set up was a breeze and you’re right as far as alignment goes. I have the flagpole attached to our ladder on the rv so when I initially installed it I just rotated the antenna pointing sorta NNE and boom I was in business. Once I was up and running I checked the alignment and all I really needed to do was slightly rotate the antenna to fit it squarely inside the box on the Starlink app. I selected the roaming plan because we’ll only be using it when we’re camping and having the ability to pause service was a huge plus for us when we’re not camping. As far as download speeds I’ve seen almost 400 mbps early in the morning but on average it’s in the 175 to 250 range with upload consistently around 12 to 25 and latency around 25 ms. I’m setting pretty much right on the beach with no obstacles so maybe that has something to do with my higher speeds not sure all I know is we’re loving it so far.

I live in a remote location in Australia and Starlink is my only connection to TV, Media, data and VOIP phone so I test it regularly.
It's interesting when looking at the max speeds.... I have Both a Gen 1 (Dishy) and a Gen 2 (Mr bevel) linked together through some Unify magic.... I Can test the dishes individually and I see the performance speeds that are identical between the two when tested within minutes of each other. But interestingly I have seen download speeds of 333Mbs down load from the Gen 1 Dishy. Admittedly its not often, but gives you an Idea of its capability. I wont be upgrading or changing my home network until I see constant performance increases that justify the cost and effort say in the rejoin of 100 + Mbs difference.

StarLink just replaced my V2 over a year out of warranty because of issues I have had. You get way more candy being nice than a jerk with technical support. I didn't think they would, but I thought why the hell not, otherwise it's Dremel time and I am not that good on surface mount chip repair and there would be no guarantee there anyway. Previously I tried so many things including new cables, wiring an external POE but to no avail. It was definitely some issue inside the dish itself. The replacement is definitely refurbished, but the performance was night and day and rock solid. Peak speeds for replacement after 2 weeks to far in Central Florida are 293.41 down and 26.77 up with 24ms hey!/whats? running in bypass mode with a D-Link DSR-250 Unified Services Router (with a RV Camper, Verizon based wireless plan for the occasional thunderstorm). This replacement dish and the continual upgrade of the StarLink constellation has made this more than an alternative to land based connection offerings. Except for my client who has Comcast with the 10G fiber network I put in for him where everything in the house gets over 1300. No reason to get jealous, whatever would I use that for if I am not hosting?
