Round six of the 1991 World Bike GP Championship at Hockenheim featured a truly breathtaking battle for supremacy in the 500cc class and Wayne Rainey (Marlboro Yamaha) and Kevin Schwantz (Lucky Strike Suzuki) took the race down to the wire as they pushed themselves and their mighty two-stroke machines to the absolute limit!

Other stars of the race included Eddie Lawson (Cagiva), Wayne Gardner (Rothmans Honda), Didier de Radigues (Lucky Strike Suzuki) and Mick Doohan (Rothmans Honda), who took the lead in the early stages, before being hunted down by the American duo of Schwantz and Rainey.
Italian Luca Cadalora gave an outstanding performance in the 250 cc Championship despite his own back injuries, continuing his ongoing battle with arch-rival Helmut Bradl.

190 HP, 275 lbs with a powerband as narrow as their tires and NO nannies....these gentlemen had skills the size of their steel balls.
Well said...no truer words. These guys were the best of all time.
Yep,, exactly what I was thinking watching em
Yeah can't argue with that much harder to ride then modern GP bikes and more exciting
And 2-strokes that exploded in power, smoking the tires instantly.
The only thing to correct a tiny bit is power and lbs.
160hp are realistic and 420lbs with rider and fuel. Or do these beasts run autonomous without fuel and rider??
No rider assistance. Pure skill. This was racing.
Schwantz/Rainey on bikes, Senna/Prost in cars... That was real mechanic sport's era... 🤘👍‼️💯🔥🛢️🏁🏍️🏎️🤓
Roberts, Spencer, Lawson, Gardner, Dooham, ...
Piquet, Mansel, Fittipaldi, Stewart, Villeneuve (Gilles), Peterson, ...
add to that Rick Mears in Marlboro Penske.
The trust they must have in each other not to do something stupid ( despite being rivals) is incredible
What a magnificent, electrifying era for motorsport this was. Formula 1, the 500cc bikes, and the Indy cars were completely insane.

IMO , 70s was a better times in F1 than around 1990. Each racing series has a different evo. Again IMO, the last 2 or 3 decades in F1 have been poor in general, with a few great moments.
500 and MotoGP have been great almost everytime since (at least!) the 80s.
No electronics, neither aerodinamics helps, just hands and skills, better times
Plus this is 2 stroke bike.
is it faster around the track compared to now....nah !!
@@pummyy
Tire technology has made a quantum leap since then.
@@13kkja13 I agree...but its not right to keep doing this cliche stuff of calling old stuff real and new are easy. Current gen brake from 360 to 80 in 5 secs on one wheel...absolutely insane.
Battle of the gods! And that’s on 500cc 2 strokes! Ultra violent power bands. And that’s without any of the pansy nannies like roll, yaw, wheelie, anti slip mitigations. Everything is controlled by the rider. Like I said, gods.
There will never be racing like that again. It was the Golden Age of 500cc two stroke racing. I’m glad I was able to witness it.
Same best nights ever
I love it. Epic win. Not only that look at the last 30 secs of the video with photographers standing on the edge of the circuit. You will never see that in todays safety conscious world.

At Assen (somewhere at the beginning of the 90s) we went over the (then still low) barrier to congratulate Schwantz after the race. I got so close I could basically pat him on the back. Turned out the backmarkers were still finishing their race, or at least still packing some serious speed. Never have I come so close to shitting my pants as those last 500's were screaming past while we were standing next to Kevin. Hardly saw them flying past. Needless to say we were ushered back by pretty upset officials, the next time I visited the circuit (a few years later) some pretty high fences were erected.
Do I ever miss those days. True gladiators.
Kevin Schwantz! The reason I got in to roadracing ✌️
Me too. Had the pleasure to ride on the same track days weekend. Kevin an Ben spies joined us. TWS. Only one that could kinda keep up was Ty Howard that day.
Haner vs Ty was always fun.
@gcrain464Crain-rd6hf ha I remember Haner also. Did you just do track days or did you race with the CMRA?
I was there.....seen it live as a young man, now I'm old...😢
Old is Gold Sir ... Enjoy your life to the max !
I am 48 and feel old too. The only advantages are seeing your children grow and learning something new every day.
@@Elaba_ lol the world these days is totally broken and I'm saying this as someone in his 30s...what kids learn these days?
They have been used for years during the plandemical orchestra...
Hey man...I am 48. Live like you never age...age only when you stop living. We all the same mate🤘
Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened
Even being from Texas I was a Rainey fan then, but seeing Schwantz's rear tire lift, and the front almost buckle under the size of those balls in that braking pass made me an instant fan.
As a teenager, I was a big fan of K. Schwantz. His driving skills were out of this world and his driving style was a joy to the eyes. Also he has always been faithfull to Suzuki though this was never the best allround bike of the GP500 era. I was in front of my TV watching this german GP in 1991 and this very last lap is engraved forever in my memories. Thanks M. Schwantz for putting sparkles in our eyes back in the days. Modern racing is so boring compared to this.

The race of my life. Made me lifetime fan of Kevin.

2:28 Drifting through the corner to get a speed advantage. The most impressive part of this video for me.
Most memorable and exciting scene
it's a MIRACLE that Kevin's front tire stuck all the way (actually PAST) to the apex of the entry into the stadium- and glancing over at Wayne at the exit made it even better- I'm sure Wayne was furious
One of the all time epic wins in the best era of Moto GP. Pretty amazing how Schwantz managed to ride the bike at all with balls that big.
An epic win for Kevin, balls of steel AND exceptional skill to do that on those monster 500´s! I vividly remember watching those famous battles in the late 80´s and 90´s and I smile. 😀
Not only great racing but the commentary was so much better than now!
I have to turn the volume way down to sit through it.
We used to have (in Australia) the late great Barry Sheene commentating and he would often just let us listen to the bikes (and then explain the changes in revs. during lean etc.) Passionate, like Simon is with the tech.
Have never forgotten watching that last lap... and KS leaving his zipper line on the tarmac... brilliant.
Probably two of the most gifted riders ever. Different styles, same aura.
One's of the greatest dual of the motorbikes racing.
I feel sad and happy at the same time. Happy that i watched these great times in real life and on live tv and i'm sad because i know these great times are long time ago and over and never coming back and what is left of me is an old man with only great memories.🤦♂️🤪😂(47)
I'm an old man too (47) & I never watched this era, watched F1 more for Senna... Then Alex Criville arrived & the rest of the Spanish riders & I've been watching ever since... but I know these guys are legends 💪
@@manuelrodriguez2637 i watched everything Senna&Prost Schumacher Hill Mansell Hakkinen all of it through out the 90s but also all of the MotoGP legends, Doohan Rainey Schwantz Criville Checa Gibernau Biaggi Puig, all of it. But also Superbikes, WRC, DTM, SuperTouring Cars, really that time i was a motorsport Freak! And ofcourse LeMans 24h groupC GTR everything
@90MinutenLang020Damsko Didn't watch F1 religiously after Senna died, only when Alonso started winning was when I followed it properly again to this day... It's a little boring now with Verstappen always winning, reminds me a few years back when MotoGP got boring with Márquez winning

@@manuelrodriguez2637 after 1 may 1994 i was a broken young man, 1 year before, my grandpa died who i loved dearly, then Senna my idol. I can tell you the rest of the 90s i was a devil in human form i did some crazy things untill i married my wife in '99 and then i slowly turned around. But to go back to the sport i have seen everything till about 2015 after that i lost trust in motorsports in general. Ofcourse we've had Marquez but in the beginning he was doing it with his own talents without help. after 2015 the crazy penalty with Rossi and the huge changes to the bikes, i turned away, just like F1 2014 i don't trust that change either. Mercedes from nothing to unbeatable? Nooo, as we say it in the netherlands, try to sell that to your cat and not to me! But you're right when these dominant years begin first with Hamilton then Verstappen, yes it's too boring. But that i think is something pushed by FIA and FIM/Dorna and money.
Inspires me to complete my Suzuki 500 Gamma Restoration!
Kevin Schwantz, my all-time favorite bike racer, such a outstanding talent.
The will to win, in its purest form!
the best crazy riders on powerful horses indomitable👊🏻✊🏻
That camera work makes you perceive speed better than the one nowadays.
I remember Watching that on live telecast! What a ride by Kev
Imagine making a pass so badass that you have the moral advantage!
I am so very thankful I was alive to watch this live. So thankful I lived during the best Moto GP times. Man I miss these guys and those bikes.
I so miss those awesome 2 strokes and ballsy riders.
I loved watching these 2 battle it out!
This is the most epic overtake ever...
I was watching on TV and that was a phenomenal race... remember that Hockenheim was a high speed circuit (at that time) and Suzuki had the slowest bike on straights...
Λατρεμένη εποχή!
Brake of the Century ❤❤❤

Nail-bitingly exciting even after all these years!
Check out 1992 at Donnington, UK. Schwantz does it to Rainey but on the OUTSIDE of the bend. Really something.
Proper racing.
Thats real Gp riding there. Sweet Jesus.
Was such a great track .
No Traction Control, No ABS, carburetors, pretty awful brakes by modern standards and GREAT BIG HUGE BALLS!!!!!!! Holy Crap that's SKILLZZZZ!!!!!!!!!! Not to mention two stroke powerbands, just frickin incredible stuff! Inches apart at those speeds!! #WereNotWorthy 🤣
So much hay lined up by the side of the track - reminds me of Goodwood!
I saw Kevin racing AFM at Willow Springs. I rode down from the Bay Area to meet a friend. The first heat Doug Toland just smoked the field. I was amazed. My friend said “Wait ‘til you see Schwartz in the next heat.” It was ridiculous. Kevin was seemingly 1/2 a lap ahead after the first lap. He was sliding the bike like Chris Harris does cars.
remember watching this.
It was all about the rider back then….awesome.
These Guys were quite simply in a different league, a better one.
I used to have a tuned RD350 LC. It was mental when it hit its narrow band, and could easily catch you out. Heaven knows what these 500cc monsters must've been like. These guys were gods.
Everyone used to say that Suzuki was not a good bike, but no one remembered to tell Kevin!
The bikes were so light and nimble in those days. Todays Moto GP bikes are way too big and cumbersome.
Need to back to 500 cc!
I've still got the VHS tape. That's the only way we got see these races here in the US. Even now(2024) all those great American racers of the 80's and 90's are completely unknown here.

Kevin was always the extra 5% that Suzuki needed. Incredibly skilled and brave, both of them.

Glad those years were my biking years, awesome, and then came Doohan..
my greatest flex is that I know Schawntz
"See god then brake!" 😱😱😱
🤣🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍

Damn, the new yamaha xsr 900 gp looks exactly like it. I LOVE IT🔥
Amazing!!!
I was really surprised when I saw this scene, it is the most memorable scene I have seen in WGP since 1984.

Esto si era puro espectáculo dos grandes de las motos ,dos pilotos muy buenos ,motos de dos tiempos...cuando valia la pena ver esas carreras de motos ...dos grandes pilotos ,rainey y Kevin schwantz.....
Great battle. Notice they showed the bikes coming across the line instead of the crews cheering.

Rainey was a God, but Kev-o on his day was THE CREATOR and what an absolutely legendary circuit 😍
The BEST video!!

It would be interesting to see how these guys would have run on today's bikes at their prime peak performance.

Unos monstruos estos tipos.
Unreal

Bollocks that big they needed a wheelbarrow to carry them around 😎😎😎😎
El mas grande.!!
2 stroke Glory
The best for me.

At the time, I was about 10 and a huge Rainey fan, being the owner of a YSR50. Looking back, sure, Rainey was smooth as silk with always great positioning. But, also looking back, Schwantz absolutely overrode that Suzuki and got 120% out of it.
Waine Rainey can't believe his eyes 😮😮😮
At 00:45 Kevin leaves the trail of rubber on the tarmac for Wayne to go back, re-live and wish for another lap.

No ....Just Diamond Balls😉
That era had a high pucker factor...
This was THE era, when men needed to have bison’s coconuts and bikes didn’t have electronic nannies! ❤

This video shows why Kevin was Valentinos Hero.
Those 500 cc machines seem faster than today's Moto 2 machines.
They're not
Is it me or do they have different tyre size? One has a larger front wheel.
Always remember Schwartz doing 200km/hr slides around bends
This is incredible. Also when they say “last of the late brakers” do they mean out of all of the people braking late, they brake the very latest? Cuz I always heard it before and thought they were saying whoever spoken about was the last rider left still late braking 🤦♂️🤦♂️ I was like wait a minute cuz this is 1991 💀
Another planet when the moto was moto 😮
On a normal Day Wayne was unbeatable...but in some Special days the risk Kevin tooks...let hum win...some days he get off the Bike...free Like....
No risk No fun
Unbeatable with a much quicker bike. I can imagine how Schwantz felt when despite his efforts in braking Wayne simply overtook him in the straights.
Crazy how high he’s sitting. Looks funny now
34 was doin it when razgatliouglu's dad was a twinkle in his daddys eye...
Are they lapping Miguel Duhamel?
Such legends I love Schwanz, that Suzuki lacked power compared to the Yamaha and Honda which meant “see god then brake” unfortunately it resulted in Schwanz crashing as often as he won 😂
ich kann mich errinnern, bin ich alt? 😂 wegen ihm habe ich Lucky Strike geraucht
Watching this now I see a lot more than when I was a kid. The first thing I notice is that Wayne's bike is significantly better than Kevin's.
Check out our "See God then Brake" tribute tee! bit.ly/4dyupzo
F! and Moto GP just a fashion show now
I hope the owners of todays MOTOGP series hears an most importantly listen to what the fans want. Pure man and machine. Not man with computer assistance. Make that another series. They already have an android bike running the track. Not as fast as a man, YET!!!!!
When I was young, I made a spreadsheet following every race for years. Data showed that if that dammed bike was more reliable (less breakdowns) Kevin would have won many championships. He was better than the rest, his bike was not.
Check out the "See God then Brake" tee! bit.ly/4dyupzo
In this time kevin swan is alien wayne rainey like rossi
