Thank you for sharing! It's a beautiful collection of sketches! I have a tendency to get tight with my sketches and I find yours inspiring! It's true that when doing plein air, having a time limit because it's either getting cold or it's about to rain makes you come up with shortcuts to try and represent what's in front of you and that can lead to some very interesting marks. And liquid charcoal is definitely one of the materials I discovered this past year I REALLY enjoy en plein air too! Glad to see another enthusiast! I have a brand new Khadi Sketchbook I haven't tried yet, can't wait to put those two together, all though it's too cold for plein air where I am (Montreal) and will likely wait for the Spring. Looking forward to more sketchbook tours. I hope you have a fruitful and safe 2022!
Hi Glenda thank you so much for your kind comments. We are lucky that it doesn't get too cold here very often. Water based media would freeze! Liquid charcoal is a recent discovery for me and I really love it. Khadi is a lovely paper and I love the fact it is made from recycled cotton clothing. Best wishes Andrew
I just love these sketches, especially those with charcoal. You have inspired me to do landscape sketches with charcoal (I normally paint in Gouache and pastel) and I'm hooked. 😉
Thank you ANDREW for taking the time out for this wonderful sketch book tour . Just the fact that you're out in all weathers ( tea rooms or not😊) adding to this you've shown us you're not afraid of experimenting with different mediums, is inspiring. I only wish that my dog is as happy as yours while putting marks on paper. 😁Cheers
My pleasure! Thank you for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Basil is great - he has learnt to be patient for 20 minutes or so then he lets me know it's time to move on. This is good for me and has helped me loosen up
I could happily frame many of those sketches of yours and put 'em up on the wall just as they are. You probably take them home to base a 'proper' painting on them, but I'd like them just as they are. The only thing that annoys me about your videos - and it's not your fault! - is that you can squelch your way through muddy farm tracks, and crouch & kneel - and I can't! Age and walking stick, basically.... I'd love to be fit enough again to get out there in the wind, rain and mud and sketch away like a mad thing, but - well, I'm still a mad thing, but such exercise is beyond me. Never mind, I can still have pleasure looking at your work; and admiring the sterling patience of Basil.
Thank you so much Robert. I’m sorry for your age related ailments. Basil has slowed up quite a lot over the last year as he gets older. I’ll continue to to climb fences and wade through mud as long as physically possible 😃
Thanks for sharing. Its so inspiring seeing you out in poor weather and such beautiful sketches. What brand of liquid charcoal are you using? Will you make a video of your plein air watercolour set up?
Thank you very much I am using Wallace Seymour liquid charcoal Yes I will do a watercolour plein air video when the weather improves Best wishes Andrew
Thanks Keith - Basil has gotten used to the drill! The liquid charcoal is by Wallace Seymour. It's not too cheap but should last quite a while - unless I knock the pot over!
I love looking for little parts of scenes I can use ,, living within a 30 min drive of Constable Country I have a wonderfull choice and in my hometown of Frinton I can paint the waves from the prom like I did last Friday ,, it’s a wonderfull choice
Interesting video - I bought one of those softback khadi sketchbooks just before Christmas but not had a chance to take it out yet. I like the liquid charcoal and watercolour combination.
Thank you Paul. I couldn't get on with it for ages and almost binned it. Then I thought it was too nice not to use and really gave it a good working and now I love it!
love the one at 3:13!! i really like the deckled edges on khadi sketchbooks, but i wish they came in 300gsm. i'm a bit heavy handed with the water also don't your hands get cold! :O
LOVE your work so much! So moody. I have several of these books and have even tried oil in them. Have you tried gouache on this paper? What brand of liquid charcoal do you use?
Thank you Mel. I haven't tried gouache in them yet (partly because all of my gouache tubes have gone dry!). I use to use Wallace Seymour Liquid charcoal but now make my own
Wow! I love the watercolors and the liquid charcoal. I think there all beautiful and unique. Did you end up liking the paper you were using? What was it called again? Thanks again for sharing another video.
Yes I did Lynette - It is quite lightweight for rough weather but is particularly good with the liquid charcoal mixed with watercolour. It is a Khadi paper sketchbook Thank for watching - Andrew
Thank you, Andrew.
Thank you Robert
Those farm gates have taken a battering, the bulls must be monsters in your area. Very enjoyable sketchbook viewing.
Thank you Gary - probably bad tractor driving damaging the gates
Lovely sketches. I can almost feel that I'm there.

Wow, your charcoal works are exceptional. I am struggling with my new Kahdi paper too. But, it is helping me loosen up.
It is difficult paper to work with but very robust
Nice work!! I really like the liquid charcoal as well. All lovely paintings!!
Thanks so much 😊 - I really like working with the liquid charcoal, it mixes well with watercolours

Lovely work Andrew. I always enjoy seeing your sketchbooks.! Cheers from Seattle.
Many thanks Bill! Hope it's not too cold there
I was thinking of trying this sketchbook. Looks like a good challenge as I spend time outdoors when weather breaks. Not as brave as you.
I really like this sketchbook but wish it had a hardback to rest on as I mostly stand for sketching
I really love the atmosphere, it's so calming! And the paintings look great ((:
Thank you so much 😀
Nice book of sketches love the liquid charcoal is it Nitram Andrew ? some lovely colours too. Love how Basil just sits around waiting .

Great sketches Andrew, where did you get the Khadi watercolour book please?
Thank you. I buy them from Truro Arts shop but you can buy directly from Khadi online
You need a show
Thank you. Had a couple last year
