Hi Mark! Als ik zo de commentaren lees is er echt wel een probleem met de filterwol van Superfish. Misschien toch maar eens contact opnemen met hen? Misschien dat dit in de toekomst kan vermeden worden...
Once upon a time I worked for a govt facility with lots of aquaculture. A very wise woman with decades of experience once told me to rinse EVERYTHING before introducing it due to the fact that they spray pesticides indiscriminately over all cargo on the big ships shipping containers coming from anywhere overseas.
Right, that is what i wanted to say. I always rinse every single filter that i buy, inside and outside😅 Nothing goes in my tanks without cleaning them first. Sad to see them shrimps die 😢
Thank you for telling us not only the good things but also your sad experience with the shrimps. I do appreciate your simplicity and your humility. All the best for other creations.
In Facebook groups for shrimps some people also mentioned losing shrimps after changing filter floss. It seems a batch of filter floss was contaminated. It was from the brand Superfish.
As I already commented, but to me it happened too, and for Mark and me it was also Superfish. So something is up with the filterfloss batch of that brand. Sadly there is no batchcode in the package.
This happened to us!! Bought filter floss from a LFS, put into our canister and our shrimp did the exact same. We used arcadia poly pad to remove anything nasty, turned out to be a contamination in the filter wool. Ours was superfish filter wool. We also did rinse it as you're supposed to. we took the bag back to the LFS and they tested it with their shrimp they lost the tested shrimp also.
Im so sorry about the shrimps, it must have been so sad losing so much shrimps, the shrimps are just so beautiful; I'm glad the tank turn out amazing. Keep up the good work and don't give up, I'm always interested to watch a video about your tanks, even if it wasn't a completely success!
Hi MJ, first of all, thank you for sharing your struggles-the video is very informative. I’ve read that filter floss can affect shrimp, and it seems it should be washed before placing it in the filter. I think the best bet would be to check the filter floss packaging, as it usually indicates whether it needs to be rinsed beforehand
same to me, once I changed my black sponge to filter floss and almost all my shrimp died within 1 day... Backed up and removed the filter floss to the black original sponge and 4 months later I got my shrimp colony back and still breeding :) Cheer mate!
Thank you for share all the process, Mark! The bad and good thigs to have tanks, sometimes in socialmedia we only watch the goods parts of have an aquarium, but its important know all the sides of this hobby, greeting from Mexico!
I was particularly struck by the beautiful close up views you shared of this tank, and, the music pieces worked so well with each stage of the 'story' of this tank. Maybe not your favorite, but excellent video :)
Cool tank imo. That really sucks that you lost all the shrimp! I wonder if it was some kind of micro plastic being released from the filter floss. Maybe you can thoroughly rinse the floss next time before adding it to the filter.
Mark, pls let us know if you rinsed the floss prior to introducing to the filter. And if so was it just cold water or did you wash the floss in hot water? I suppose some disinfectant (or residue during production be it petrol or clue) contaminated the media.
Decent looking iwagumi. I think it would look better without the gloss. I would’ve done the med sized hair grass in between the rocks and not the sides. The tall was good. And the mini everywhere else. I mean I’ve never done iwagumi either but looks good for your first time out of your comfort zone. Sad about the shrimps tho.
Sorry for your loss sir 🙏 😔 It happened with me also when i changed the filter floss of my outdoor pond 1 shrimp and platies Somehow immediately i got other shrimp inside the other bucket The comment section is also going with the same issue is something we all need to care of
I like the scape even if it isn't strictly Iragumi. I have two questions though which maybe you can answer for me so that my scapes will go a little better. At times when I've tried to get a little height to my substrate such as you've done here, the substrate slowly starts levelling itself until it is flat. What do you do to prevent it from happening? The other question has to do with your scape. Was it a "dry" scape, or did you put the water in right away after planting it? Because of the magic of video, and making cuts, it's often hard to know what goes on in the time between the cuts.
Oh nooo, that’s so unfortunate about the crystal reds :( They looked so good in an Iwagumi style tank, the colour contrast between these shrimp and the green of tank looks amazing! Oh and, will you be at Vivarium 2024 here in the Netherlands? :)
same happened to me, i replaced (some part) of old filter sponge on my HOB with new one and all my fish act bit weird but i dont think much abt it, i realize it too late 2 days later all my nerite died, all my fish hiding and laying in the gravel etc.. i think it about cycle crash probably. so many beneficial bacteria lost from that filter floss, tank imbalance, ammonia spike and all those stuff... it happened to me twitce actually, the first one i overclean my filter, my tank water turned milk white by the next day ( i cant see anything ), but fish are fine, but this one was long time ago... nowadays i simply dont mess too much with the filter
The same thing happened to me a few months back, and I lost a lot of fish. Lesson learned; Never buy materials from a hardware store; buy from a fish store only.
Taking a photo of a promising setup and then not being able to reproduce it in the tank again, I know the feeling. From the other comments I've gathered that the floss was from Superfish? I've been using small portions from a bag for over a year now, and I haven't had problems. At least, I don't think so. But then again, I am not keeping high grade shrimps. Very strange and very sad. Iwagumi is not my style either, for the exact same reasons. I love woodstructures, I love plants and classic Iwagumis mostly feel empty to me. But to each his own.
