  • Geese are wonderful fowl to have on a hobby farm or homestead, but they are very different from other poultry. Steve & Brian explain what everyone should know about these birds before adding them to the farm.

    In some ways geese are like horses in that they need something to nibble on between feedings. If they can’t have access to grass because of predators or other issues take a small bucket , fill it with hay and hang it in their pen for them to nibble on they will appreciate it. Timothy hay or orchard grass is fine. It doesn’t have to be fancy or… they love alfalfa which is fancier and more expensive.

    Guard Geese are a real thing!!! I figured that out when I was a kid pulling shenanigans at a neighbors farm. I never tried to steal an egg again after being “introduced” to his goose. 😂 😂 😂

      Geese and ducks typically do very well through cold winters as long as the have a place to shelter, and plenty of food and water

    Dear Hobby Farm Guys,
    You get all my praise today for a programme on geese. Geese are my favourite poultry. I have a suggestion. I don’t believe you have done a video on Tufted Roman Geese and the regular Roman Geese. The Tufted is my favourite breed of geese.
    Sincerely,
    Larry Lewis

    Thank you for making this video. I unfortunately already bought two geese but I’m finding from my experience with chickens not that hard but knowing what I know from this video now I won’t need a guard dog lol keep up the good work guys.

    I've had good luck raising them in brooders with orphaned Muscovy ducklings. They bond with the mascovys and when the mascovys join the big flock the geese bond with the flock. Then in turn protect and alert the whole flock to danger. The batch of geese I have now are bonded to the boss drake and they help him keep order and protect the flock.

    I just like to leave a comment I have a coop with a Chinese goose and a Toulouse. One male one female housed with two Easter Egger chickens and 10 rabbits and this is not on a farm. This is an urban environment. I would tell anyone geese are fun. Their intelligence will blow you away. Mine follow me everywhere when I let them out and I can also run and flap my arms and they will mimic what I do by kind of flying and flapping their wings, they do need to get out they can’t be kept in a pen. And they do love to graze. I had a weed problem but they’ll decimate your garden. Just the same if you let them lol they’re also great swimmers and love having Zumiez in a pool. And one last item, the Toulouse variety are very much more quiet Chinese on the other hand as loud as a car horn.😂

    Can the noise made by geese end up attracting other predators instead of curbing them in some cases if in areas where there are larger predators? Thanks.
    Example; if I go camping and put some geese there because I don't want to carry a gun, can this work as a gun replacement?

    • @HobbyFarmGuys
      @HobbyFarmGuys  5 місяців тому +2

      Not sure I would trust them to replace the gun...especially in bear country. I don't think the larger predators would be too intimidated by just the sound.

      @@HobbyFarmGuys Very cool answer. Thanks. But I am curious to ask stuff. Like there's people fishing up north that do electric fences around their camp and fish spot due to bears too. But I don't know if it would always work? But your advise on the gun is real. Thank you for teaching me.

      Best Gaurd I feel are Emdens. But. If its a very noisy alert you are after then get a Chinese Goose. We have both. Almost 57 degrees North (Scotland) with no issues bar fox protection, crows, magpies, rat protection for eggs and Young.

    You forgot to mention that during breeding season they will even become somewhat aggressive with you, especially the alpha gander.

    • @HobbyFarmGuys
      @HobbyFarmGuys  Рік тому +3

      Good point. Even when they are human raised and relatively tame, all bets are off during mating season.

      Ours has been relatively fine, just needed put in his place a couple of times. Unfortunately or fortunately many folks get scared of them and so are put off. Personally I cannot recommend them enough. Well until they get in to the carrot patch that is. :/

    we are building a house on 2.5 acres out in the county in Virginia. I am very tempted to raise geese for the reason of selling them. i'm not looking get rich doing this, but could a person help with the cost of raising geese by selling some of them? if accomplished properly what do you think? 👍

    • @HobbyFarmGuys
      @HobbyFarmGuys  Рік тому +2

      If you are just looking to offset the cost of raising geese it is definitely feasible. Get a good incubator large enough for goose eggs and make sure everyone around knows you hatch goslings.

    can they fly like chickens or turkeys how tall of a fence do I need to keep them in my yard

    • @HobbyFarmGuys
      @HobbyFarmGuys  7 місяців тому +2

      Domestic geese don’t fly too well, and can usually be contained much like turkeys. If they are well fed and comfortable in their shelter they won’t wander too far.

    Hi!
    Thanks for your video.
    I have a 10 acres field with climentine trees and i am thinking of raising geese there because i heard that they are eating the wild grass and that is very helpful for my trees.
    I have 2 questions of anyone can answer me.
    1st
    My fence is 1,5 meters tall. Will the geese fly away and lost them?
    2nd
    How many geese will be enough for 10 acres field?
    Sorry for my English
    I am from greece.

    • @HobbyFarmGuys
      @HobbyFarmGuys  Рік тому +1

      First, your English is quite good.
      A 1,5 meter fence is sufficient to keep geese in. Some domestic breeds are good at flying and may be able to clear the fence, but most will not even try if they have a comfortable home & are well fed. The Sebastopol goose is a good breed to have if you don’t want to worry about them flying.
      In a 10 acre field, you can house up to 40 geese, though I would probably limit that to 30 to ensure they have plenty of space and grass to eat.

    • @SynKronos
      @SynKronos Рік тому +1

      Rule of thumb. 5 large geese can graze as much as one adult sheep.
      Fencing. Ours don't go over our 500mm (20") fencing. But for their safety higher is better.

    • @SynKronos
      @SynKronos Рік тому +1

      Oh and consider wing clipping if you have a breed that can get airborne.
