I LOVE GEEEEEESE!!!!! Things I learned from having geese: --Goslings love to chew..on everything --They don't care about rain, they'll stand in it all day long --If a gander is getting aggressive, take his neck and push it to the ground (make him submissive to you) --They are great at alerting you when someone/something is on your property --Watch out when they try to wack you with the bony part of their wings --They are so warm and soft and great to hug --Make sure they always have access to fresh water to drink

I’ve given non medicated chicken grower, mealworms, oyster shells, and they graze like I said... just now I had to put them in this huge horse water tub but I put a gate so she can’t hurt him and they cried and cried so I gave in and put her with him and the first thing she did was bite him so hard I could feel his pain.... and she swallows his feathers.... help me!!! @@aprilrain4296 With most poultry when they bully one of the others you have to temporarily separate them until the injured bird heals up. When its healed up then you re-introduce. It doesn't always stop the behavior. But part of why this behavior occurs isn't just about the behavior but about PERCEIVED WEAKNESS. Chickens do it, especially. And with chickens as long as a bird is wounded it will get 'pecked on' (picked on). (get it?) So when you reintroduce it, it needs to look healed up to not look weak. People may have to do this 1 to 3 times with some poultry species. Another trick is to reintroduce a smaller bird than the one picked on that's healthy or other birds and this resets the pecking order. If the smaller bird is faster also that will help on the reset. HOWEVER... it is a small chance also that the new birds may also pick on an injured bird so you have to watch for this. But this may work. I have learned so much about geese, ducks and chickens from you. How an older suburban woman will ever use this knowledge, I don’t know, but it is still fun!
You are a major reason that we are going to begin raising Toulouse geese once we buy our property. 😊 We absolutely love goose meat, and living around so many geese in Germany and France, we fell in love with geese. They’re sort of like the Larry David of poultry.
Without really knowing you but watching your vids, I think you have found your calling. You're so good at editing and also so funny I think you should have a real show. I know, that's not the purpose of your farm but you are so entertaining AND so concerned with conservation. Thanks for sharing your life with us.
So my mom is a vet and she saved this goose from the local pond that broke its wing. She was too worried to let it back because she could no longer fly. So we had a goose at our house. She was called “Crabby Abbie” she was the worst.
Lol my mom is a vet as well, it would be nothing to come home from school and find bald eagles, raptors, great horned and snowy owls, turkeys, and much more. About 99% of those were only at our house so the wild bird rescue could come pick them up as we live closer to them than where my moms clinic was, but we certainly have had a collection of misfit pets that mom has brought home over the years. Funny thing is next week is her last and is retiring Friday.
You've inspired me alright. I just bought a small farm and will try to get some poultry next spring. Maybe not geese on the first year but it's on the list!
Growing up, we had two toulouse geese (both females) and they truly awesome pets. They were notorious bullies for our cats but they would knock on the back door for bread. They were so good natured and only bit one person (my sister's friend) and I felt compelled to give them an extra piece of bread in recognition. I love watching your videos because it reminds me of my feathered friends, now long departed.
Being a goose farmer has been my dream for years! I just found your channel and it’s safe to say that I’m obsessed. Thanks for all your hard work creating videos :)

Oh, no different than a human, in reality. They've got teeth on their bills and on their tongues... work together. VERY sharp, as Morgan will tell you.
Morgan, when I see your geese, I'm strongly reminded of a story my mother told me. She said that I was born and lived on a farm in Northern Ireland as a child and she told me how I used to throw sticks at the guard geese we had, and then when they chased me, I would run squealing into the kitchen and shut the bottom half of the split door. (I don't know what the actual name of those split doors is, but we always called them stable doors) and outside the geese would flap their wings and honk really loudly and I would giggle and totally enjoy it. She said I was an absolute tearaway back then, and more like a little boy, than a dainty little girl, lol. Decades later, nothings changed! Lol. Good times! God bless you and all those you know and love.
I am inspired by Gold Shaw Farms' videos, in fact, his videos are probably one of the only highlights of my days right now. I actually look forward to every video Gold Shaw Farms posts, not only that, but I also love taking care of animals such as Ducks, Chickens, Geese, Cows, etc. and Gold Shaw Farms' videos gives me hope that one day in the future, hopefully, I can have a farm similar to his. I'd probably have more plants on my farm, and more variety of animals. So I just want to take a short moment to thank Gold Shaw Farms for putting that little bit of positive hope and inspiration into my life, and for giving me something to look forward to every day. :)
Also, a little tip for you, when you are working with bigger animals particularly with cows, since you have mentioned before that you have cows, keep the child between you and the mother/father, unless the cow has horns, then you're pretty much screwed either way if the cow thinks you're a threat.
I think it's the happiness this all gives you - massively evident on your face - that is the most inspiring and enjoyable part of your videos. It cheers us up just watching you being so happy about what you're doing.
Also when it comes to holding a goose, as goes for a lot of poultry. If you hold them on their back. They calm down and are also easier to handle! But it also depends on the character of the goose in question. I really loved this video! Geese are my favourite animals they're just so goofy!
You should never hold them that way for very long though, as it's difficult for them to breathe in that position. That's WHY they calm down, they're trying not to suffocate.
Just so you know, I’ve been watching for a little while now and since then I’ve been constantly inspired by you 😊. I started a small lil operation of my own. I have about 22 birds right now but I’m running out of room. Now I’m about to buy my first serious FARM FARM. All thanks to your videos dude
Wow, what an excellent (and entertaining) summary! We are adding a Pilgrim pair to our homestead this season and I'm already wishing I'd ordered more... but everyone starts somewhere. We do have an incubator: what's your hatch rate for incubation vs. letting the goose do this job naturally? I've heard that Pilgrims have good brood instincts. We are in Canada and I've subscribed to learn more about farmyard tips that are suited to our climate (like crampons, ha ha). Vermont is a beautiful place to call home and I have fond memories of visiting there as a kid. Thank-you for sharing your expertise!
This is such a wonderful video. I've been loving the channel because your temperament is so pleasant and your philosophy is so approachable. But this is really helpful and clear without getting too in the weeds. Also, watching the geese with the apple made me incredibly happy.
Loved the scene at 0:38 ! Btw I hope its not a stupid question but geese are migrating animals, do you cut there wings or its a special breed or they just love to stay with you ?! 😄
You are so wise about becoming a farmer. Out here in Montana I see so many people who want to do what you are but they jump in way over their heads in agribusiness and livestock and their beautiful dream becomes their living nightmare. Visiting Gold Shaw Farm in the morning just sets a great tone for my day. I just have one request, please create a "release the quaken" coffee mug.
Heartland Okie We tried making fodder and ferment both but it attracted a ton flies. Mom wouldnt let us keep it in the house so we gave up. It seems like a great idea though.
Restaurant ( Butchers and Catering companies) scraps are also EXCELLENT! Even in the current year and 2020, there are scraps to be found. Before the current global sh@t show my Flock kibble cost ( for around 25-35 chickens and now 9 Moscovys) about $25/month. With the lockdowns/ shutdowns it went to about $25/week. I have a few videos, but checkout the EdibleAcres channel and Karl Hammer for other examples.
Years ago, a lot of the restaurants were getting in trouble for that. Even if they knew it would go to pigs. i worked at an army mess hall and saw the huge amounts of leaves and produce waste and they told me I wasn't allowed to take scraps home. They said it was a law.
@@whisperingsage Those laws have been relaxed/repealed in many places. The details will need to be researched in each locale but the absurdity of the situation and the sheer quantity of the waste just got to be too much to ignore. Generally you need to be able to pick the produce up inside a specific time window on the day it is pulled, which often means every single day and the grocer will want you to take everything they pull every day which for even an average sized chain supermarket outlet can be more than most people can easily handle (think hundreds of pounds of mixed produce).
I am dying to get some Shaw farm geese eggs for my daughter to hatch / raise on her homestead ... missed out on goose eggs this year 🤞🏼🤞🏼 I get in on some eggs for next year!

Yep! I'm planning on buying my first goslings in a couple days. I've been keeping chickens last couple years and now I'm going to add some geese to my homestead. Thank you so much for making and sharing this video. Very helpful!👍
@@Brodozer39 that and having to listen to their hunger song when they see me coming. They sound like a very busy city street, with honks of many pitches!
Animals tend to not move to far from their shelters so in the summer if you free range your geese fully you should put a shelter out away from everything else so they will hang out around there more instead of staying by the house
Can't wait to see what 2021 will bring for Gold Shaw Farm! Btw, wanted to say I appreciate the referral link disclosure in the description. I always find it a little dishonest when people, even close friends, whole-heartedly recommend a product and then send you a referral link without mentioning that they're getting kickback. Makes you feel a little used. I fully support Morgan finding ways to be more financially indepedent and I appreciate the added honesty + transparency that continues to be an important part of this channel.
Interesting that you say geese are more sustainable than chickens. I haven't kept geese before (maybe I'll try it now), but I have raised chickens, turkeys and ducks. I've always found the chickens to be the most sustainable on my small farm. Mine have access to pasture and also woodland during the spring/summer. They hardly touch their feed during the warm months. The yolks develop a deep gold color and the taste is AMAZING. I credit the flavor of the eggs to the chickens being allowed to have a natural omnivore diet. Anyway, love your channel. Keep the good content coming!

I have now had four geese for all most a year now but I however hand reared my geese so you would think that they would be nice and kind however one girl is a big pain in my bum as she is exactly like Justin so I can definitely relate. However she has made her own special way to attack: she grips your calf and twists all most 180*
i have 2 female talouse geese and i love them!! they are a little aggressive towards the kids which is a little scary but i just work around that. Hopefully as kids grown up and learn to stand their ground they won't have that problem anymore. They have the most character and are definitely bonded to me. They never try to bite me or come at me. I can hold their beak and give them medicine without any problems. They are more like dogs i think in personality than poultry.
Morgan this was wonderful and informative as usual. I've never heard geese referred to as cobra chickens. I do remember thinking some time ago that they hissed like a snake when Justin Finch Fletchly would become aggressive with you at certain times. As I replayed the video I noticed and laughed at 10:00 they were quiet and that several of the geese were trying to catch/eat the snow flakes. 😊

I have been bing watching your video. Take it from a storyteller, you sir are a great storyteller. You keep me interested the whole time. Keep this up and you will have me as a viewer for ever.🤗
Thanks Morgan, you're teaching me new things all the while entertaining me too!
You’re literally the reason we’re adding geese to our flock this summer. Adding pilgrim geese. Thank you for sharing!
Wow, your own breed of goose! The Gold Shaw Goose! That's so exciting!
Larry David...bwahaha. So true
You've not fallen in love with geese, you've fallen in love with their dead bodies. If you loved them you wouldn't kill them
@@therockingvolbeat3630 This!! 👍
Ya fuck that goose!
@@Brodozer39 it sounds like the profession is losing a great member!
But you won't have to mow the lawn ever again. They are great at that.
Can the geese fly away?
I love the way Toby got involved in the scrap and sorted it out
You've inspired me alright.
One goose is going to use another goose as a surfboard had me just rolling in laughter plus cobra chickens is such a great name
Being a goose farmer has been my dream for years! I just found your channel and it’s safe to say that I’m obsessed. Thanks for all your hard work creating videos :)
What sort of geese so you raise?
Geese terrified me when I was a girl, hated them☹️ but love your goose and other birds stories and tips. Some factories use them a guard alarms. One flock of geese worth six night watchmen.
Omgosh I love your outlook about how make the world a better place, geese. I have raised geese for a large part of my life and I have so much love for my birds and they have truly.. somehow.. managed to make me a better person.. just by being geese! I love watching these videos, I've learned so much watching you learn. Thanks for another great video. Wanna leave a better planet for your children? Get geese. Boom.
You work very hard
Its not easy to take care of any animal in this weather .
YOU, my northern friend, just made my day! I have 3 Roman Tufted goslings on their way to me in Florida- my 1st foray into poultry. I'm inspired to have my farm full of geese!
I've subscribed to your channel~ will watch every video you post~
Thank you so much for the information and entertainment!!!

The world needs more geese.
I absolutely agree.
I love my geese but they are 2 legged locusts.
I got my first 3 geese on 20th may 2021 because i was inspired by this video. I now know i will keep them for the rest of my life. ❤
Hey Morgan hope your having a great day
I am inspired by Gold Shaw Farms' videos, in fact, his videos are probably one of the only highlights of my days right now.
Back when you fell on your butt and the way you said "duuude" I knew this channel was for me.
LOL! You should find the one where he zapped himself on the pasture electric fence, entering the bird compound.
@@rhondaalbrecht YES, but sadly Both of these were poorly choreographed :-( like it was sooo noticeable ...
@@WobblesandBean I didn't actually know that, but that makes a lot of sense, thank you!

Holy smokes! What a great edit. I feel like I'm watching a T.V show.

That part where there are your clones pouring the water straight up gave me a heart attack.
You are so wise about becoming a farmer. Will geese eat fermented grains? That has lowered grain costs by as much as 30% for some farms.
Yes thats what mine eat. They love it more than pellets.
Heartland Okie We tried making fodder and ferment both but it attracted a ton flies. Mom wouldnt let us keep it in the house so we gave up. It seems like a great idea though.
@@vineyardchickshomestead fermentation smells, that makes sense...
So nice to hear the consideration you take when farming and the environment :)
You should talk to the grocery store and see if they can give you waste fruit and veggies.
What a great idea!
I love it! The theme starts playing when you start talking about the Parks and Rec crew. Editing perfection...

I am dying to get some Shaw farm geese eggs for my daughter to hatch / raise on her homestead ... missed out on goose eggs this year 🤞🏼🤞🏼 I get in on some eggs for next year!
We have 16 Embden goslings and 12 Guinea fowl keets arriving 29MAR21. We are a hobby farm so all those fowls will end up on our dinner table, eventually. We are looking forward to breeding the geese and Guinea fowl as well. Gold Shaw Farms has been an amazing inspiration!

Do the farm geese eat small insects and bugs or are they strictly herbivores?
they are strictly herbivores. however, they have no problems killing anything small that moves
@@iHasCaek thanks!
Mine have never eaten bugs. They just don't do that. That's for the chickens.
Oh, boy, that was a nice video trick with you pouring all the water at the same time!!! LOVE IT!
Animals tend to not move to far from their shelters so in the summer if you free range your geese fully you should put a shelter out away from everything else so they will hang out around there more instead of staying by the house
I can tell you have been really improving the production quality! I love the hard work please keep it up!

Really flexing your editing skills this video huh
Interesting that you say geese are more sustainable than chickens. I haven't kept geese before (maybe I'll try it now), but I have raised chickens, turkeys and ducks. I've always found the chickens to be the most sustainable on my small farm. Mine have access to pasture and also woodland during the spring/summer. They hardly touch their feed during the warm months. The yolks develop a deep gold color and the taste is AMAZING. I credit the flavor of the eggs to the chickens being allowed to have a natural omnivore diet. Anyway, love your channel. Keep the good content coming!
If I didn’t live in the burbs, I’d love to have a few geese. My three hens are my limit.

I have now had four geese for all most a year now but I however hand reared my geese so you would think that they would be nice and kind however one girl is a big pain in my bum as she is exactly like Justin so I can definitely relate. However she has made her own special way to attack: she grips your calf and twists all most 180*
Yeooooowwwww!
i have 2 female talouse geese and i love them!! they are a little aggressive towards the kids which is a little scary but i just work around that.
