  • Climb aboard a KC-135 Tanker as she provides a full aerial fuel load to an SR-71 flying out of Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan in 1981. Apologies for the poor condition of the VHS video (new technology at the time!) and audio. Video shot by Tech Sgt. Dave Burns, who received special permission from the Detachment Commander to film.

I was stationed at Beale AFB from 1974 to 1977. Assigned to the 456th OMS in SAC and then later to the 9th Recon wing after SAC was abolished. I was a 43151E Aircraft Mechanic and then later assigned to aircraft 59-1464 when we switched to the Crew Chief system. I did a 60 day TDY at Kadena in 1975 and got to experience a Typhoon. I was an assistant Crew Chief at the end of my tour in 1977. I was proud to be part of the Beale Bandits and help support the mission of the SR-71. It was and still is an awesome airplane. I'll never forget what it sounded like when it took off. Thanks for you service.

That's pretty remarkable. Probably the only video footage of this. You should do more videos talking about your experience working with the SR. Blackbird nerds like me love this stuff.

There isnt a single flaw with its design, its engineering crossed passion if you ask me.
    Unbelievable

Cool plane but it did have its flaws such as fuel tanks that would leak everywhere before they reached a high enough temperature

Reading Brian Shuls book & seeing his remarkable presentation at Lawrence Livermore . It is easy to understand how refueling could become really terrifying. He said try it at night in bad weather limited visibility in a turn, it quickly became terrifying. I think the SR was sometimes not far above the stall.

In 1994 I was invited to view the restorations of three SR71 at the Skunk Works Palmdale.
It was only myself and one technician showing me around.
All of the inspection panels of the aircraft had been removed and I was allowed to look inside where ever I wanted, essentially no restrictions. Even though I was fascinated with the aircraft at the time I wish I had appreciated it more.

Quite a difference in the quality of the recording between then & now isn't there lol Even the everyday mobile phone can probably record better than that. Mind you the camera's onboard the SR71 were pristine quality even back then.
Great vid, shame the SR71 is gone 😭😭 only one I've ever seen was in a museum
