Hi Jessie, Teochew is not a dialect of Hokkien. We're both part of the Minnan language family but we're not a dialect of each other. Great video as always otherwise!
Teochew is definitely an aberrant dialect of Hokkien
It's great to know. I loss my heritage due to the war in Vietnam. My father was a teacher in a Chinese High school in South Vietnam from 1950s on.
@@ClassicHolic😂😂😂 Teochew spoken in northern States of Malaysia is often mistaken as Hokkien in the Southern States of Malaysia.😂😂😂
About to say the same thing. Hopefully just a mistake. It will be like saying Cantonese is a dialect of Shang hainese😊
@@ClassicHolicBecareful, Teochew people will take offence. I am of Teochew ancestry.
I am a Teochew from Thailand. My ancestors immigrated from Shantou (Swatow). Want to visit there someday.
Coming from Southeast Asia (particularly Indonesia) from where the term Hokkien entered English, I must clarify that when we say Hokkien we are referring to 閩南語泉漳片. NOT 閩南語 as a whole. This is a common misunderstanding for non-Southeast Asians so I hope that clarifies things. To add on, other languages that are part of 閩南語 such as 潮汕片 and 雷州片 we refer to Teochew and Luichew, and NOT Hokkien. The reason why we do this in Southeast Asia is because each of these groups have their separate communities and associations (會館). Hope you understand.
I visited many years back! It is still amazing. I’m also a fluent speaker of mandarin, Teochew and Cantonese, so this would be heaven.
Looks great! Really interesting mix of architecture too, and everything looks ~so~ well maintained as well. Good job getting that balcony table, what a view!
Jessie, you seem have an endless well of creative and interesting topics for you videos. It is always such a treat to see what you are going to share with us next. You always make my a day a little brighter. 😇😇😇
Who love her chinese-english accent. it's so sweet
Likewise
She is ABC ig
I've always met and heard of Teochew people in Southeast Asia but I see a legit Teochew town and person with this video😂 it feels weird
Thanks Jessie for the video. As a 3rd gen Teochew, on mom's side, video like this make me appreciate the place even more

Love your outfit. The food looks amazing. Thanks for sharing this!!
Teochew is NOT a dialect of Hokkian, it is a dialect of Minnan.
Wow Jessie looks amazing thank you for sharing. Teochew looks feels like it was used in a film that I saw. I can't just place it. @0:12
I was there a few years ago.
Visited my ancestral manor of the 潘 clan, it was an eye opener
I’m glad to see u visit my hometown!!!
Looks like a really nice city. Always exciting to see new places!
Yeah it is really nice!
That city was excited to have you!
I went to Shantou and Chaozhou a few days ago! I recognise some of the areas you showed in the video.
That's the land of my ancestors. I would love to visit there sometime very soon. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
It's made me exploded when someone is in China and talking about food there! Any way I have a dream that I'll visiting this place; it's my granddad birth place who took his whole family with 8 or 9 children to the south in the beginning of 20th century and settled down in Vietnam, and he was successfully laid down the ground for his offspring later on.
As a guy born and raise in Swatow, I'm really glad to see this video!
Welcome anytime!
Happy Easter Jessy and Li!
Thank you! Same to you and your family!
Wow, I really enjoyed this video. Please share more of China with us here in USA. I have always desired to visit China since I was a child. I am In my 50s now, because of the silliness of our Political class, I just do not feel safe visiting there.
Thanks for showing my ancestor hometown .im thai of chinese descent
That vase can even outshine Jessie. That thing is really crafted by immortals.
Hi Jessie, why don't you come to Malaysia and Singapore, explore Chinese culture here.
now this is what I call a perfect VLog
I already had in mind to visit Shantou (I live in Shenzhen), since I’m interested in the history of China’s Special Economic Zones and Shantou, together with Shenzhen and Zhuhai, were China’s first economic zones. In any case, thanks to your video now I am even more convinced of going (probably just a weekend).
In anglo culture goose was once really highly regarded as a special festival food, this though died out around 50 years ago.
It's still a traditional Christmas thing in the UK, but turkey's more common now (cheaper and easier for supermarkets to source). Goose fat for roast potatoes is still what everyone recommends though!
Teochew is a dialect of Chaoshan(teoswa) not Hokkien!
They are closely related.
dialect of the min family languages
Yes.. teochew is Teochew
Similar to hokkien yes.. But teochew IS NOT hokkien
Teochew Chinese influences in Thailand so Thai calls noodle "Guay Tiew".
It was recommended to me as one of the best smaller city's, I hope to visit it
Singaporean-Chinese (76% of the Singaporean population) are mostly Hokkien descendants, and Teochew is the second most spoken Chinese language after Mandarin (and English.)
Must try the seafood there. Try the beef noodle in Shantou, fried pork rib, sweet potato and yam , and of course the oyster omelette (small oysters) and listen to the original Teochew dialect 👍
I would like to visit this city one day, hopefully this year.
How nice is that. Jessie
I travelled to many countries and around China but I have been to mainland China. I must visit shautou when I visit China. Shautou is my parents hometown.
Cool looking place
I like your turquoise blue outfit 🔥
Awesome upload lah! Have you ever been to Chaozhou before?
No I haven't, this is my first time in Teochew area!
My family name is wang / ong in Hokien dialect... but my family was raised in the teocew tradition (from papa's grandmother) whose surname is xu / khouw Teocew dialect
😊😊😊😊
Interesting ❤❤❤
You are so gorgeous!
Sweet baopiang(?) some how is like lumpia/lunpia in SE Asia
Aku seorang teochew dari Indonesia kota Batam shantou adalah kampung halaman bagi kami orang teochew dan kakek aku asal dari sana tahun 93 aku pernah ke sana waktu itu umur aku baru masih 5 tahun
Think it is a bit insulting that a clip on Teochew culture ends off with Cantonese song and rap
Got to agree with you bro.
And i am teochew.
I have seen on youtube rap music of teochew and they are just cool in my opinion..
That's why there's a lot of Teochew diaspora in Malaysia. I regret not learning Teochew at my young age...
That was a beautiful city of china speakers like Cantonese and mandarin i love that this would be so beautiful will you please react to the grandmaster in mandarin plz

Thank you for your amazing support on this journey! 💕
wow that cat cafe looks so cool! what is it called?
It's called 疯子的店 haha
I speak decent Mandarin, now I am interested in learning Cantonese. Any idea which platforms to go to learn Cantonese?
You should pronounce it as dio jiu.
Watched twice....
"small city" population according wiki 5,502,031. My nation is 5.4 mil.
😂😂 It's a relative concept I guess
其实除了打卡点 我家乡还是有不少好吃的哦
2:26 💀💀💀💀💀GIRL WHAT TYPE OF TOY WAS THAT
Cuando inglés es tu segunda lengua 。hola 😅😅
你好,我住在广东省
Looks beautiful and human scaled, plus...I'd rather eat goose than chicken or duck. Much tastier...but rather fatty, but that keeps the flesh moist and juicy.
What's the title of the song on the last? Is it Cantonese ?
Yeah it's a Cantonese song called Everywhere We Go
@@ChinesewithJessie lovely.... I love your videos, you're beautiful and funny.
Teochew people always prefer goose over duck or chicken.
潮汕侬民欢迎汝!
Hi
Hi girl 💗
the city is not as beautiful as Jessie
你男人祖籍是这里吧?
歌叫什么呀?
After my like 666 became 667

Small city with 4.5 million people 😂😂😂😂 small. That's a larger population than Rome.
You didn’t have shantou music. You used Cantonese music girl . Make sure okay use your dialect.
到底你邊度人啊? 應該係客家人?
Wow how rude. Teochew is not a dialect of hokkien
It is not a dialect of Hokkien. Pls do ur homework
Teochew isn’t a dialect of hokkien.
Love your accent, so sexy
我是美国人, 我就在你所在的位置.我们有没有可能见面??有趣的是, 我们可能在同一架飞机上?
That's interesting, I'm already back to Beijing though
@@ChinesewithJessie it’s ok, tomorrow I’m going to Shanghai. I’d like to meet though. It would be cool.
@@ChinesewithJessie I have a booking for Dafang hotel a day after tomorrow.
is it allowed to say how crazy cute you are or is that considered too forward in todays climate of 'correctness'?
麻烦你说说方法谢谢!
