Tears in my eyes with your video. Jackson Co. Up in the Balsams not far from the highest part, my wife's grandmother taught in a one room school there. In 1960, yes, you could reach Granny by phone. There was a phone in the general store at Little Canada. The school - k-8. When the 8th graders went to high school, they came by bus (student driven) 63 miles (round trip) to a high school owned by and on the campus of WCC (correct name for the time) where my wife to be (her granddaughter) was schooled from 1st to 12 th grades, BS in education, and an MA in education. The college classroom building was side by side with the public k-12. Met her in class one day She turned and made a personal comment. I had never spoken to her. She was way above my status. She said,"Why didn't you shave today?" What a thing to say. I asked her out. It took three times before she agreed to go out with me. We wandered all over her mountains. Courted in those deep and dark mountains. Married. Kids and grandchildren. Cancer came. I laid her ashes as high up as possible, where we had courted.
Yes, we courted. It was a way to test each other to see if we could handle a life together. In that time, it was until death do us part. We expected to pass together after a life so long married. But now I can only memorialize her. I can not see or hear her. I miss her.

I don't know how on earth you managed it, but I really enjoyed not seeing tourists everywhere. I felt like I had the mountains all to myself.
