- Pokemon Competitive Singles has seen a significant shift. In Gen 9 OU, Great Tusk has reigned supreme as the #1 most used Pokemon throughout the metagame, up until now. In August, Kingambit actually surpassed Great Tusk to claim the #1 Spot.
Roaring Moon has also dropped to UU by Usage as of the new August stats. What's going on?!?

Power creep is out of control. I think TPC and gamefreak need to take a long look at either lowering the stats of Pokémon from about gen 4+ or raise stats of older Pokémon. The lack of national dex does nothing to keep things balanced and they know it

Kingambit is like the Zapdos of Gen 9, if you don’t plan for it in teambuilder you just lose. But instead of having hard counters like Rhydon and Jolteon, it only has checks and can bypass those checks whenever it feels like it

@Substantial-hf1rm The fact that Pursuit puts pressure on your opponent to use Tera in the first place or get OHKO'd is good enough. Yeah, Gholdengo can Tera Fairy and get obliterated by Scizor and Kingambit. I don't see Pursuit ever being mid, especially since you can use Tera Dark.
@@Renegade77784 yeah, I didn't think about that. For one thing, I'd like to see the calc of Goldy terablast fairy/fighting v. AV Tar under sand.
2) you can just switch, and now the opponent blew their tera just to get out of being semi-trapped by tar. Your own Goldy would probably be a pretty good counter to a goobered enemy Goldy.
3) forcing a pokemon to run terablast is usually a pretty good sign of being a major threat. That is 1/4 of their moveset that will only have the chance to get used some of the time.
This is awful news, Great Tusk's passing means that OlD mOneY and Iron Mugulis are free to wreak havoc on the gen 9 metagame. It seems even with Kingambit's crippling gambling addiction, it may take eons of sitting at the Veilstone Game Corner before he exhausts all the funds from Gholdengo investments 😢😢

another reason why roaring moon is down bc sneasler is a huge competitor. Dire claw is such a silly move and with unburden providing a speed boost after white herb, terrain seed, or even big nugget fling is huge, since sneasler can focus on swords dancing up and cheesing through checks with dire claw
Not to mention since Day 1 Gen 9 OU, Dondozo was a check (and even a counter depending on how the match has developed) and Baxcalibur could threat Roaring Moon back, but I think the last nail on its coffin was Enamorus-I.
It's like how Hydreigon fell in disgrace back in gen 6-7: the lack of proper counters let it to thrive in, but the moment they add counters to it, it was now harder to use until the playerbase gave up trying.
Ngl I’ve used it for quite a while and I don’t even think I’ve used dire claw more then 20 times and only twice has it gotten a status proc in a way that mattered. I’m just not often in a situation where dire claw status fishing is the optimal play. Honestly I’d see no major difference if dire claw was banned if people were really unhappy about the potential shenanigans it can do I’d just run poison jab for the fairies instead.
They really said "Let's make Hawlucha but better in every way that matters" bc replacing and invalidating older mons seems to be the theme of gen 9.
This has to be the work of Sinistea's future paradox form, Iron Mugulis.
Or Gholdengo's past Paradox form, Old Money.
Basically gambit overtook tusk because tera absolutely breaks kingambit and pushes it over the edge on top of its incredible defensive utility. If tera were to be banned, gambit would likely be a tier staple, but not a busted mon, nor would it be number #1.
At the very least, Tera at team preview is a no-brainer at this point.

The thermal exchange ability on a physical setup sweeper sounds pretty crazy.
The fall of Great Tusk makes me wonder if this gonna increase the outcry to take a second shot to the Tera Type restriction in order to reveal it in team preview.
I agree with revealing Tera in Team Preview, though I disagree about banning Tera outright or limiting it to STABs. It's not like Dynamax, where everything got bulkier and got busted moves like Max Rockfall. Besides, it also adds a huge layer of depth to the game.
Of course, I don't play Showdown, so what do I know?

it is a small Jump but i think him being a ground type which doesn't lose to enamorus has also helped Gambit get #1

@Mepphy99 I doubt Pursuit will be removed from Pokemon altogether. I mean look at all these overpowered moves Gamefreak has been making Pursuit isn't that bad by comparison. Pursuit will put a lot more pressure on pokemon like Dragapult and Gholdengo to not just switch in so freely. I think Scald is coming back too because in one of the Scarlet and Violet trailers, Milotic was using a water move that looks like Scald. Scald will also help check Kingambit better.
I've just realized that the new flying type threats you mentioned also aren't as threatening to Great Tusk's main competition, Landorus-T. Makes sense how it rose to #11 last month while Tusk fell to #2. More flying types mean more prey for stone edge and smack down, and lando only runs U-turn as its contact move

I tried to convince players a 50% playrate for an OTP who has very few checks wasn't healthy, but not enough took the issue seriously enough and decided to blame tera.
People say open tera would balance kingambit but i dont think so. It would be still op.

@@rocketmudkip I KNOW, but people just doesn't listen to graphs. The mere fact it has only 1 reliable check in Dondozo, alongside the Swords dance + Sucker punch combo, should be enough to ban it; Kyurem bot banned for less. With Tera blast banned it would still be a problem due to Zen headbutt.
Is just sheer new toy syndrome from the playerbase. Either you ban Tera (Almost no one wants this), you ban Kingambit and Gholdengo (Not enough want this) or you get a terrible meta. We can ban tera blast and implement tera preview to adress some outliers like Volcarona, Regieleki and matchup fish stuff, BUT that won't solve issues like Kingambit cleaning games or Spikes HO.
@@N12015 funny thing is that dozo gets smashed by tera fairy/flying gambit because dozo loses the damage race, so reliable is a subjective term.
Also I would still blame it on peoples desire for tera to be in the meta. If tera didn’t exist dozo would actually be a hard counter, tusk would still take a ton from sucker punch but could actually kill it with cc, etc.
I don’t claim it would be balanced, I’m just saying at least you know what will actually keep it in the dirt.

I think terastallizing as a mechanic is the main cause for such an upside down metagame. Powercreep will still get sorted out into tiers eventually, but tera typing has been a huge factor in deciding which pokemon wins and which loses. There’s no such thing as hard counters and easy checks anymore because of it.
According to my sources, controversial past paradox form of goldhengo, old money pulled the strings at smogon to reduce great tusk's placement. This was done in collusion with controversial future paradox form of sinistea, iron mugulis in order to reduce resistance to their ploys.
I'm just more surprised that Cocaine Bear dropped to UU. Not that it'll last more than ten seconds, but I'm surprised all the same.

You shouldn't be surprised honestly. Despite great offense, bulk and offensive movepool, it's severely limited by it's typing and speed, also it was too reliant on trick Trick Room. And with common Water, Fighting and Ice moves dominating the meta, it couldn't tank hits really well. It was a matter of time when Ursaluna fell below OU.

I made a chomp team specifically to try to find something for it to do (which wasn't much). In the grand scheme of things, I doubt me using the team for a total of maybe 4 games kept it from falling but I did contribute. I've barely seen it since the first week of gen 9 so I was surprised it wasn't already UU.
I think another reason why Roaring Moon could’ve dropped to UU is being outclassed as a Tera Fly Acrobatics mon by Sneasler and Grafaiai(Yes the funky monkey). Sneasler has access to Fling and Unburden while Grafaiai can run Swagger + Mirror Herb and Unburden to boost its attack and speed.
Roaring moon's fall is probably just opportunity cost
And i also think sneasler is one of the main reasons: it is a better SD acrobatics sweeper and is better at spamming u-turns

Kingambit is so versatile yet it does essentially one thing and it's so paradoxical. It's always going to be a late game swords dance sweeper, it will nearly always have SD and sucker punch on every set which makes you think okay so it's predictable, can only have 2 moves for variation most of the time so whys it so good?
What's crazy about kingambit is terrastilisation and items. It can run tera dark and can hit like a truck, can run tera fire so it can't get burnt, tera fighting low kick for other kingambits, tera water is another good option, tera fairy as well is a good choice and finally tera flying for a free swords dance if your opponent decides to eq.
It can hold so many items and a range of EVs that make it so hard to counter as if you expect it to be made speed tera flying SD and then ends up being tera fighting low kick and now you're done for.
It can have HDB, lum, black glasses, life or, leftovers etc. Can be bulky SD, fully defensive with SD, can be fast offensive, specially defensive AV I've even seen and the list goes on.
In one way it's a one trick pony, it will usually be saved for last and be a SD sweeper with sucker punch but it's other moves, tera, EVs and items change the Pokémon completely and I would even say it's more versatile then gen 8 Lando or at least more influential.
Lando t has always been so versatile and can play many roles but gambit has the one role but does it astronomically well and can do it in so many different ways it's crazy.

Whenever i see a Kingambit in the enemy team i try to keep alive either my scarf special valiant (neutral damage 2hko, 1hko with super effective, with just the speed enough to outspeed +1 tusk & bax and rest into physical bulk), my ice spinning great tusk (2hko super effective, 1hko with fighting if not tera) and if i can too, my ting lu mostly so if it comes before expected i have a wall that can eq/whirlwind, these mons are part of the main team i keep playing since the start of gen9, and together happens to manage kingambit quite well
Pawniard has been doing the same in LC for years. Tfire to avoid wisp and sucker punch STILL being a dark stab has cleaved countless combatants.
GT always felt a tad overrated imo but funny how the suspect test ends then KG rises to #1 in usage.
like you say, it's far and away the best offensive pick of the gen. Valiant is a helluva breaker and has more set variety, but is handicapped by a niche ability. hopefully an influx of priority might invalidate some of KGs late game potential

A Mythendary in UU makes me hit myself in confusion. Granted I'm a mere spectator who is only watching for Iron Mugulis so I had no idea why the star of Legendary Spam: The Movie is even allowed in the first place. Then I looked at the analysis and saw that it gets shredded by U-Turn and found that it has what is essentially a non-ability.

As surprised as I am to see Ursaluna in UU, I do get why:
- It Lost Magearna, the best TR setter in the game that worked even without it. Creselia and G-Slowking still exist as TR setters, but aren't as consistent or as versatile as Magearna was at the role.
- The meta game has shifted to a point that it isn't as good for Ursaluna sadly. Bad matchup against Great Tusk, Enamorus-G, Meowscarada and Sneasler. Does have a decent matchup against Moltres, Ting-Lu, Zapdos to some extent, and King Gambit, but its matchup spread isn't good.
- Slow speed definitely held it back as expected.
Bear goes to UU.

Ok I know its weak to sucker punch but I will die by the fact that skeledirge is the single most underrated mon in ou right now. Unaware mon that actually threatens to win games with the insane move torch song is actually good and no one uses it (in ou, ubers is another story lol)

Ppl are waiting as long as possible for DLC and stuff to retest Tera bc right now there’s no way it’s getting banned and the council has pretty much said that there won’t be another test after this one

I blame Tera... Kingambit is a late game finisher, and it's ability to have a free 50% boost from the ability and the ability to change out of it's weaknesses lets it autowin late game
Tusk is overall more balanced and has tons of utility even without Tera.... rapid spin, item removal, and so on...
Kingambit should be banned if tera remains legal, and if Tera goes then it's much easier to counter and beat lategame
Tera would be balanced if it reset any positive stat changes to 0 upon activation
The thing is that moltres and zapdos are also the better checks to kingambit.
Zapdos really can't do much outside of pray for full para, and while Moltres can burn Gambit, it can either tera fire and goob, or run lum berry and goob.
