Ryan really did his homework for this episode.
This is probably my favorite Ryan episode because of that
I can't help but think that whenever Mike does the nerd voice, he's actually making fun of Ryan.
to me it sounds a lot like Conan's nerd voice
Hahaha yes LOVE Conan!
Yeah, im starting to like Ryan now lol
1990 was the year of my best birthday ever. An NES with SMB/Duckhunt, SMB3, Metroid, and TMNT 2. Bliss.
Dude! Nice!!
Not to brag or anything ;)
I can't even imagine. I've gotten video game systems for Christmas as a kid, but I was already familiar with the greatness of video games at the time. To have an NES dropped in my lap when quality video games never existed previously(sorry Atari) I can't even fathom. Nintendo must have been a god damn epidemic.
that's like getting a ps2 on 2005 christmas (wich I had lol)
that's my 89 x mas
TMNT2 on NES is a freaking solid arcade port. They did well with the limitations of the NES.
Should've been 4 players with the four score
Jump kick. Jump kick. Jump kick. Jump kick.
That's how we all played this game as kids. :P
There technically is a "foot-dive simulator". Ever hear of the game _Dive Kick_? :P
A+B will get you twice the power of a jump kick. It's a riskier move, though. You'll get hit a little more often than you would using the jump kick. Don't push A+B quite at the same time. A slightly ahead of B.
Yeah, but not if you're fighting a boss at the end of the level.
Ironman374; Yeah, the A+B move took out basic enemies like foot soldiers, mousers, etc., with just one hit. :)
No its not. Only if you didnt know how to really play
Dominos guys... Dominos.. How could you forget the whole "122 1/8" scene?
J McGill I gotta get a new route.
J McGill Thundercats
And I thought I could live it anywhere.....
J McGill was is the same in secret of the ooze I can't remember
it roys in secret of the ooze. knockoff of rays in new york.
I love when Ryan talks about NES limitations !
I definitely watch a series of Ryan showing cool NES limitations and how the developers resolves the problens to run the game :D
The bosses of the two new stages are named Tora and Shogun. They were indeed created specifically for this game, and were actually designed by Kevin Eastman himself.
Ryan: He's a headmaster.
Mike: I'll bet he is.
Ryan: *blank stare and awkward silence*
Ryan again looks uncomfortable at the end of the video when he has to suggest that their best strategy is to "try to get both of their helmets off"..
This game was amazing when it came out! Everybody could finally play this at home, and around the peak of the TMNT craze. Good times!
I'm enjoying it now on the PS5 The Cowabunga Collection!
@@truemperahzentertainment6133 Nice!
April wasn't a reporter in the comics, she was Baxter's assistant, then became an antique shop owner. Cartoon turned her into Louis Lane clone
As a kid, I loved the snow level and the ninja house level. I also think they had great music. Glad Konami added them to the game.
But at the time, damn, the visual/audio difference between the arcade and NES versions was huge and impossible to ignore!
24:10 James Avery, who did Shredder's voice, also made the "they're like a married couple" remark himself. In fact, in a bit of improv in an interview, he said "Krang and I are divorced now." 😂
I wonder how a TMNT RPG would be.
I spend a hole summer playing this game with my best friend we beat it to a pulp this game is gold in my op
yea me 2 unfortunatly never beat it but got all the way to the tecnadrome
What were they thinking with special moves taking health? That was designed for the arcades so you'd put more money in
Well, now I'm in the mood for some Pizza Hut and some ice cold Mt.Dew.
Mt. Dew ruined my 10th birthday. Kept drinking Mt. Dew until my stomach couldn't handle it anymore. Boy was I sick.
@@deezy81 Too much liquid. Try to explain that to a boy. It tastes good! I want more! No son, don't, you're going to shit yourself. I know this because I've been to multiple keggers.
This was my favourite TMNT game for the NES.
0:50 "CYOOPON" I still have the instruction booklet with the coupon. It's funny, but that coupon made me want to preserve it, and that's why I still have it.
One of my fave ninja turtles games growing up.
Mike and Ryan - FYI, the special move is not A+B. It is A, then B is super quick succession. If you roll your finger from A to B, you'll nail it every time.
They should give *The Hyperstone Heist* a chance, it was a great game.
Well more or less but the controls are much better (more responsive) and feels much more neutral
No, they ate Dominos!
yup
Yeah, I remember noticing that when the movie came out in '90. There were tons of Pizza Hut commercials, and when I went to see the movie in theaters, it was Dominos. I was a kid, but, I was like "WTF!" I thought the turtles rocked the hut. lol
Lol, almost as if Pizza Hut SHELLED out a bunch of DOUGH but did something to piss off the director or something who then replaced Pizza Hut product placement scenes with Dominos.
I'm actually curious about this now. Someone provide the answer now or I shall blow it all up! ALL OF IT!
I can literally hear his douchey ass surfer dude voice lololol
I was offended as a kid in the movie that they ate Dominoes cuz living in NYC, Dominoes was synonymous with disgusting pizza. #pizzasnobbery
My favorite level is the Japanese level, totally exclusive to the NES and the song is fucking killer… I could listen to it continuously. And when I finally beat the game 5 years later too, man what a challenge!
Blaze Piffington i was confused for a second. i thought you meant japanese level. the music is the best :D
Blaze Piffington That board was hard as fuck with all those sticks/spikes coming outta the floor
Ah the nostalgia. I remember this being one of those games that I always wanted as a kid, got plenty of chances to play it, but never owned it.
"he's a headmaster"
"I bet he is"
lol
A buddy of mine and myself played this so much that we had every boss pattern down and could beat the game without having one death. This is always something I can go back to along with 3 and 4.
B A B A UP DOWN B A LEFT RIGHT B A START
RoyTheWizard 99 lives
I used to play this game a lot too, and I always enjoyed it.
Does Ryan have a degree in spriteology
Bridgeman I believe he has his dr. pepperate.
Bridgeman I definitely appreciate his input. I think most people notice and are aware of NES flickering.
Bridgeman no I believe it is obesity. ( ok sorry I don't mean harm )
In Manhattan Project, there was also a down+attack move that didn't take away life. I think it generally tossed enemies over your head.
Good shit .....it was a throw.and that made the gameplay better than part 2's....u then had to strategically use your special....instead of always relying on it like in 2.....the throw became the new go-to move
Shrang! You'll find him in the 2003 series.
Mike, the 4th boss you fight in the forzen streets level is named "Tora" and the other "new" boss is named "Shogun".
i remember becoming a beast in this game as a kid.
4:16 Great explanation and analysis, Ryan. You know, that color limit is also likely why these games never supported the 4-player adaptor of the day. As a kid, I didn't realize it was a serious technical limitation that made all 4 turtles in gameplay impossible.
See, the NES could support only 8 palettes at a time. 4 3-color (+transparency) palettes for foreground objects, and 4 4-color palettes for backgrounds. Cutscenes mixed foreground objects and backgrounds to use the colors the best they could.
Makes sense to me, but then how did the NES Nightmare on Elm Street pull it off? I remember that blowing my mind as a kid - that you could have four players on one NES lol.
Recycled colors and two character models. Red boy, blue boy, red girl, blue girl.
Background colors can only be used for background, not for moving objects. And that's the problem.
As is, there's 4 palettes in use for foreground things:
1) The player one turtle. (skin, outline, mask)
2) The player two turtle. (skin, outline, mask)
3) Explosions and weapons. (yes, they use the same palette - white, red, orange)
4) Current enemy type. Notice only one enemy type is onscreen most of the time, though some enemies use the "explosion" palette.
The other 4 palettes are for backgrounds. Foreground objects cannot use background palettes, period. If they wanted all 4 turtles, they'd have to have enemies be turtle colored or something.
+Daytime Sky Gotcha - since you earlier mentioned "Cutscenes mixed foreground objects and backgrounds" that was what I was aiming my suggestion towards, but it was my mistake to mix up terminology. At any rate, you seem to know a lot about this - have you done palette work in the past?
I haven't done palette work; I just know how these kinds of things function. I don't know how all hardware functions work, though, but I do understand a lot.
Iconic NES game! The original cartoon was great, too. RIP to the voice of Shredder - James Avery AKA Uncle Phil! Oh, and that sprite knowledge from Ryan was pretty interesting. Thanks for that!
When Ryan started with the sprites n' pixels and scanlines. I was having a full-on nerdgasm. lol
I like it. Somebody talking more about the tech than just the game itself. Very cool!
Bury my Shell at Wounded Knee....
I remember when the turtles lost a life they would collapse with stars round their heads. Then there was some bad voice processing (just like NES Ghostbusters) for them to say 'shell shocked', but it blatantly said 'candle sauce' and this was a meme with my friends for the longest time when we played.
Down + B does an attack that kills regular foot soldiers with one hit in The Manhattan Project. A + B has each Turtle do a special move. The special move does remove 1 piece of health, but your turtle is invincible while doing it--very useful for the fight against Super Shredder. The Down + B move does not use up any health.
Played this game for days when i was a kid. Awesome !
I played that game as a kid a lot of times too, great memories with my cousin beating it, it's great to know you played it too Mike
The first Mike & Ryan video that was so entertaining, I watched the entire 40 minutes. I usually watch the entirety of the shorter videos, but I click off videos a lot because I have a short attention span (and ADHD). I love you guys, and Mike & Ryan, I'm so happy to see your quality improving over time. Thank you for such awesome entertainment!
Being colorblind, i never really noticed or understood these things until The Super Game Boy
Ryan is the man. Delivering like a true pro as of usual.
I love ninja turtles 3 manhattan project.
I think the specials are more powerful in that game (alot of aoe) and make you invulnerable while you are doing them so they take life, but won't kill you.
Basically the result is that you just spam them after you are down to 1 hp, before that you typically won't use them.
Love this game! I love being a turtle!!!!
wow color me impressed ryan. props to you dropping NES knowledge to the masses
The name of polar bear guy is Tora you can see him at season 2 when the technodrome was at the bottom of the ocean
its called the POWER SWIPE!!!!!!!! God damn it!
Pizza Hut and Mountain Dew take years off your life, but I like to live dangerously
They wont take years off your life if you eat/drink in moderation, and exercise regularly.
Haha! Got me.
I too like to live dangerously. Except I substitute Monster for Dew cuz I'm xxtreme also.
Daniel Latkowsky very extreme, almost as extreme as playing Russian roulette with a semi automatic handgun, now that's extreme
Nah bro when I gets xxteme I inject G Fuel into my eyeballs while ripping kids at Call of Duty
Definitely one of my favorite NES games as a kid. I played the hell out of this in the Arcade and then I got it on the NES and was so excited. Not only was it a Ninja Turtle game, but it was a great game and quite challenging as well. It took me a while to beat it I remember.
I used to play TMNT 2 on Nes with my brothers and my cousin when we were kids back in the 90s while eating Pizza Hut. Great Times.
I remember playing this on my Cousins NES 25 year odd years ago, thanks for helping me revisit these memories Mike & Ryan.
Being 4 or 5 when playing this i wasn't very good, I always got stuck on Bebop.
A game genie episode would be pretty sweet
This port had something the original TMNT game didn't: fun.
davidmreyes77 real shit, that game was fuckin horrible
When I play this game and it would slow down I would consider the slow down as a camera slo-mo effect like most action movies had/ have.
The best video game/Pizza Hut commercial fusion, ever.
This was one of my favorite games as a kid
laughed my ass off at the Sprite Theory comment.
i laughed until diaherra came outta my ass
Thank you for playing TMNT II: The Arcade Game! I had been wishing for it for a long time, and it was less than a week ago that I searched for it again with the hope that you guys have covered it. Great gameplay, loved the insights about the sprites and the precision in those jump-kicks.
A fun game genie code combination was playing Street Fighter 2 Turbo with:
No 2 second charge for special moves, preform special moves in mid air, and preform double jumps.
I loved having entire fights without touching the ground!
Two or three turtle figures a visit?? My mother would only let me get one when we went to the store. =( And ONLY if I was good!
This game brings back memories for sure. Me and a great friend of mine spent I don't know how many hours playing this game on two player
I used to work at Pizza Hut. They take and make the dough fresh daily. What they do is put a thin layer of oil in a pan for the Pan Pizzas, and then place it in a proofer. All other pizzas are rolled out and placed on the trays.
yes Tmnt II : the arcade love this game
This was my favorite game in the arcade as a kid in the early to mid nineties.
7:22 Hold up.. I cant believe how calm Mike was.... Ryan is clueless! best game
That jump kick was the best lol I remember using it like crazy
Finally tmnt 2 arcade my 2nd favorite game
In the 1990 movie, it was Domino's. In the sequel, it was the place Kino worked at that wasn't a known pizza place. In 3, they just made their own in ancient Japan. In the new ones, I don't remember any pizza brand on the boxes.
Game Genie blew my mind as a kid. It was so much fun just messing around with stuff.
The highlight of this video is listening to Ryan discuss 'sprite theory.' No joke, its interesting to hear him discuss the technicalities of the game,
Ryan actually sounds a little like Donatello! Thanks for the playthrough guys
Fun fact: If you lose all your lifes and choose End instead of Continue you can select another turtle and you`ll start on the last level you were instead of the beginning. This allows you to play as the four turtles if you want.
And its funny that Mike stated that the game was really hard but he managed to get pretty far by himself.
I really love hearing the technical aspects of the NES
Me too. Sounds so cool.
I collected the toys as a kid. I remember getting my allowance and sprinting to the toy store in the Mall every Saturday to see what new Ninja Turtle action figures were released. What sucked was my Mom baby sat and the kids would always rip the arms and legs off my toys or chew on them.
When Chuck Norris plays this game..there's no flicker or slow down.
He doesn't really play the game though: the game pops in the NES and plays itself on speedrun, that's the power of Chuck's long, cold stare :P
I was surprised how tough this game was. It's definitely fun though.
Worked at Pizza Hut and yes, the Pan pizza definitely sits in oil until it's used. Squirted out of a big jug into the pan, each squirt equaled 1/8 of a cup. Two squirts for a medium and three squirts for a large.
Lol graphics make me feel really old looking at this. Compared to the graphics. Last 20 years . I'm 41
Feel you bro. Im 33
in the movie it was dominos though pizza hut was on stuff outside the movie. used to play the heck out of this as a kid and still have it. picked it up at a a garage sale. leonardo is my fav. remember the turtle fruit pies?
32:33 Scorponok is also in Beast Wars. He was one of Megatron II's most loyal lieutenants.
I have this one, didn’t know there were two more stages than the arcade version. That’s nifty.
I would imagine that most likely Zac was in his Bedroom looking at his Turtle Communicator at that time.
I want to hear more game design facts from Ryan. Would love to see him do his own show where he nerds completely on the design and programming bits of certain old games. I study programming but know nothing about old games so this would be Top 1 wish from me.
This was my absolute favorite game as a kid and one I always wanted to own but never did.
I had Manhattan Project, which was a great sequel and one of my favorite games for the NES, but there was something about II that was so much cooler.
this was my absolute FAVORITE game as a kid. I put a ton of hours on it and remember getting all the way to the end fighting shredder and then dying. i was crying and everything. I WANT REVENGE
This is my most nostalgic turtles game. I love this game
So much of my childhood right here, I never beat this game so it was great to see the end.
These two are my favourite guys to watch play games right now
This was a good episode guys. Fun and informative.
Interesting fact: I've been friends with one of Kevin Eastman's (co-creator of TMNT) relatives since we both went to school together in the 8th grade. Kevin Eastman is also from the same family tree of George Eastman (of Eastman-kodak lore).
Everyone knows you're lying
Ryan looks pretty good here. A lot of people dislike these videos, I don't think they realize that Ryan has been part of Cinemassacre since the early days.
Ryan's bringing up some really good, interesting topics here too, it's refreshing to hear his "sprite theory" (lol) stuff, as opposed to the typical "Fuck, fuck, fuckfuckfuckfuuuuuuucckk shittt!!!" - no offense to Mike / James of course, you guys have already talked at length about the swearing, and I totally get it - that's part of getting in to the game.
But it's nice actually like, learning a little bit about the compromises and workarounds that game devs had to make, in regards to colors/sampling/sprites/even a bit about AI on NES carts. I love learning about stuff like that, I'd actually watch a few videos of Ryan just talking about that stuff, if he actually has enough to say for something like that, haha.
lol yeah I wish they would've gone more into that sort of stuff, instead of just kind of pushing it to the side. But in the end it's their content, they can do whatever they want 😀 - and I didn't come to one of these videos expecting to learn anything to begin with, so I guess it's just a bit of a bonus, really. lol, but yeah I agree somewhat, Mike was almost like, ripping on and mocking him, in a friendly way, or course, for knowing a lot about sprite creation and stuff, instead of adding to or at least letting the interesting topics continue - but of course Mike edits the videos (or at least most of them) so he did add in a bit of visual context for what Ryan was talking about at least once, and of course he left in himself being somewhat ignorant (in the sense that he seems like he just didn't know what Ryan was talking about)
In the original Mirage TMNT comic series, April was working for Baxter Stockman as a computer programmer, but she quit and opened up an antique store. After a while she became the vigilante crime fighter called Nobody, then she discovered that she is some sort of a magical drawing come to life (it makes no sense). Since at least 1985 she has been depicted as a warrior type, and even in the Archie TMNT comic series April was trained by Splinter to be a badass, so her being trained in martial arts in the more recent shows isn't really anything new.
God, nostalgia bomb. I got this game for my birthday the year it came out and THAT SAME DAY used the coupon it came with at Pizza Hut. I remember because my manual had a piece missing from cutting out the coupon.
You failed to mention that bebop and rocksteady were replaced by Baxster as a boss on that later stage.
I remember having a TMNT toothbrush holder that I got from a Burger King Kids meal.
I'll never forget breaking my pinky sideways in the sixth grade playing bball, then after school with my dad buying this and double dragon 3. Trying to play with the broken finger in the way lol.
To decrease the amount of times bosses hit u after a jumpkick, make sure not to land too deeply into his body...if u do,u will b too close and he'll hit u...measure your kicks Carefully and land on the very tip of him...barely touching him with your toe...you'll land far enough out of his body to b able to quickly jumpkick away.....GAMEGOD tips right here
23:45 i am surprised no one has said this in the comments, but Mike said Shrang a combination of Shredder and Krang, this is funny because they have already done this, in the TV animated series of TMNT back in 2003, Shredder was a Utrom which in that universe is basically Krangs alien race.
The last scene has so good music.
