The original Star Fox still has the best soundtrack in the series imo
Feelin' DanDy yep, I wish they would remastered it in a future game.
FACTS
Ryan is on point!
Thanks :3
Ryan is interesting when he talks about the history or technology behind classic games. I really liked hearing him talk about his WoW and Final Fantasy experiences on the now legendary Zelda Like-Like stream.
Wish they'd upload the ham salad stream, btw..
Ham salad stream? Haha, I don't remember that one, but it sounds like it was interesting. Was that recent, or was it a while ago?
and a pusher
Lo-Fi Drunken Ninja .... Fail of the day... Using the phrase "on point".
I now look at the quote "Do a Barrel Roll" differently due to 1:22 haha.
Going to use that on my girlfriend tonight.
good luck! ;-)
Intimidation your becoming more like your father
#blue waffle
google 'do a barrel roll' without ' ' or " "
The original Star Fox game hasn't aged well, it's still a fun game but it has bad frame rate and controls the ship isn't as smooth, but for the SNES it was good.
I remember playing it as a kid and getting frustrated. 64 version was the best hands down. Great story, great missions, just a shame they went a different route that wasn't received well. They waited too long to go back to the original style and not doing it justice. Again it could have been one of those stories that matured with its fanbase like Zelda. Good times though.
lylat wars 64 sucked ,starwing fx was better
The one thing that really sucked was the music. Besides that, 64 was great, too easy on the main path though.
except that it's probably still the best star fox. yeah the frame rate isn't great but it doesn't affect its playability. it also has the best challenge out of any star fox game i've played. they all seem like a joke compared to path 3 on the original game. you felt like a real space fighter pilot badass when you managed to finally beat path 3. no other game in the series is going to give you that same feeling of accomplishment.
No one had even heard about frame-rate when Star Fox came out. It just was what it was.....
"Do a barrel roll" is from Star Fox 64.
Dafuq was that beginning? I guess Ryan got bored and decided he'd become an OG for one day.
haha it was nice tho
I think the do a barrel roll meme comes from the fact that you're not even doing a barrel roll. Technically it's an aileron roll and then everyone made fun of this.
yes, what he says
I doubt that was the reason. Just the thing people heard more. Think everyone found the voice clips funny in general. Thats something people bring up to make fun of it but sometimes its the delivery or the type of advice(and the repetitious nature of it)
yes, what he says
Doom was another SNES game that used the Super FX chip.
Best intro ever, haha. The airhornsss.
There is also a Star Fox 2 prototype that was very close to completion before Nintendo decided to go "fuck this" with it, because of the N64.
I was able to play it once on an emulator. The idea of changing your ship to a ground vehicle was in that game. It's pretty fun.
Yeah, in the 64 guide, Miyamoto gave an interview, said a lot of dropped concepts were recycled from 2 to 64.
I love it when Mike and Ryan get together and try to out nerd each other.
"My favorite aerial maneuver is the pacard maneuver" " That's not an aerial maneuver. They're in space!"
*Starwing*
(if you played the European version)
How about a DK64 Mike and Ryan episode?
BlackPhillip They played DOOM though, so who knows?
No, they've done N64 and PS1 games in the past as well, besides some 90s PC games...
Much better than them talking. Ryan is really funny.
That intro is badass well done Ryan.
I can't tell if that intro was funny or painful
Bit painful
I can tell you this-- they found it a bit of both as well.
You're too high Ryan... I like it
One of my very first games, solid masterpiece.
I think the reason it's a meme is because it's not even a barrel roll, it's called an aileron roll. A barrel roll is more like following the seam on a paper towel roll, you're flying forward but also doing a large loop.
Do a barrel roll comes from the Nintendo64 version of the game where Peppy would just tell you randomly to "Do a barrel roll!". The only problem is that he would say that often when nothing was happening on screen or would repeat it endlessly for no particular reason, like a glitch of some kind.
Star Fox was one of my favorite SNES games. It was a shame they never released Star Fox 2.
I always thought the barrel roll thing was funny because Peppy is supposed to be some seasoned pilot but the only advice he has for you is to roll your ship. Thanks for the pro tip, Peppy. And as one dude said, it isn't even a real combat maneuver.
I think part of the reason "Do a barrel roll!" became an iconic reference is because of the voice acting in Star Fox 64, and the fact that Peppy says it multiple times during the game.
"His maneuvre was to get his ship blown up by the Borg, and lose his wife." I'm dying.
Actually, the "Do a Barrel Roll!!!" meme started with Star Fox 64, not the SNES Star Fox.
The whole idea behind the meme is just in the way Peppy says it, as well as the various images, or animations, that go with it about things doing "barrel rolls" or failing at doing them.
They're not paths, they're chapters and I hope next year,Mike and Ryan do paths 2 and 3 and even try the secret path to the bonus stage.
Favorite aerial maneuver? A Crazy Ivan for sure.
I laughed so hard from that intro.
Barrel roll meme explained : try do any starfox 64 mission without Peppy flippin you off with his do a barrel roll advice
Peppy: Do a barrel roll.
Fox: Shut the fuck up :p
'Wing wing wing damn it.'
The U.S. FX Chip games are: Star Fox, Stunt Race FX, Vortex, Dirt Trax FX, Doom, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.and Winter Gold.
I thought Mike and Ryan were gonna drop the hottest mixtape
I remember winning a starfox pin back in the day at some store display competition. Good times. :)
When I was a kid I'd play through all three paths every single Sunday morning, for at least a couple years. Loved this game. No other Star Fox has came close, in my opinion.
man thanks for mentioning Nathan Barnatt! how could i have missed this gem! \o/
my colleague worked on this game and the super fx chip too :)
"ermmmm GALAGA!" 20:47. That voice gets me laughing every time.
Ryan: You mean Rebel Assault II. That game is fantastic, I loved playing that as a kid!
My beloved gaming franchise! Now, I have to play it again...
Another fun episode. After watching this, I feel like my channel is sadly lacking in the air horn department.
Haha, I just did a barrel roll on Google. That was awesome, I didn't know that!
The Star Fox barrel roll is actually an aileron roll. Oh, and there are other games with the FX chip, like Doom (Doom and Yoshi's Island used the FX2 chip, but it was almost the same, just that it runs at full clock speed, whereas the FX chip is underclocked to half speed).I think there were close to 10 games that use the FX chip, but I can't remember offhand. Mario RPG used the SA-1 chip, as did a lot of lesser-known (but oftentimes awesome) games.
Donkey Kong did barrel rolls before barrel rolls were cool.
Nice
I'd love to see you guys do the harder difficulties of this game. The hardest one is pretty brutal.
'Fuck Tingle!'
That part has me dying 😂
Star Fox is the best Star Wars game ever.
Lol
Have I been missing the subtext of Mike & Ryan? "two guys getting high and playing video games"
There is something about Ryan that just makes you wanna gently turn of your computer.
Turn of your computer, eh?
I'm not sure when exactly "Do a barrel role!" became a thing, but the earliest I remember seeing it was on YTMND back in 04. And to answer Mike's question, it was taken from Starfox 64, at one point Slippy says it in (I think) training mode.
Who else went to go google. To see if it does do a barrel roll
i knew about that trick for a while, it is pretty cool
Yep. Pretty trippy. lol
this game was awesome as a kid and I still play this game even today.
It was a great game, the most impressive thing to me was the short cinematic camera moments. You wouldn't expect such an early console 3d game to be as polished as star fox really was.
Ganon is technically in smash bros. it's ganondorf's final smash
Ganon and Ganondorf aren't the same person?
Ganondorf is the human, and Ganon is the monster, as any single person who has played a Zelda game would easily know.
dowingba I know but aren't they the same person? Like is Ganondorf the way he would be in light world, and Ganon is how he is in dark world?
@rex Ganon is Ganondorf in Pig Demon form.
Depends on the game. Zelda games don't really have a consistent world/lore, despite what some people think and even the "official" Nintendo "timeline" which was just made up on the spot and makes absolutely no sense.
I remember when I got this game in 93 I was blown away I loved it
When I was a kid I always thought falco was saying "Soon we'll be jammin"
W-w-w-wing Damage!
the intro hurt my soul.
10/10 for that intro to the game! Holy shit!
love the mike and ryan clips
i like the schwartz maneuver, the one where you go all the way to plaid!
who else went to google and try the barrel roll?
I tried to but it froze my browser.
Rebel Assault 2 on PS1 is the game you're thinking of around 7:50 Yes it was pretty good. So was the Sega CD Rebel Assault 1 if you can believe it...
Always assumed do a barrel roll was from n64. Peppy would constantly say DO A BARREL ROLL!
I laughed at your batman quote. "Somedays you just can't get rid of a bomb".
6:14 yeah this music IS great, when you can actually hear it. For the next videos please crank up the volume a little guys (not too much though)
I remember from when I was a kid our old i386 PC running Windows NT 3.1 used that After Dark program. I always liked the Marbles screensaver with the happy faces that would fall every once in awhile. I also remember Flying Toasters and Can of Worms. Haha, great memories! :)
why are they pushing in keith apicary so much?
I'd be curious as well, no hate for the dude but that's not what I come here.
KingFossilFER I found the roast of James Rolfe video. James seemed to get a big kick out of the slapstick antics of Nathan Barnatt while being roasted. I suppose they started their collaborations after that.
This is my favorite game. Thank you for playing this!
The move is actually an aileron roll, where a barrel roll is a different move utilizing more airspace. The meme and popularity of the expression, I believe, definitely comes from StarFox, and speaks volumes to the SNES' social impact. I continue to stand behind my stance that it's the greatest console in history.
As someone else in the comments said, the move you do in Star Fox isn't even a barrel roll: spinning the plane on it's axis is an aileron roll. A barrel roll is basically doing a loop and a roll at once.
In Starfox 64 Peppy yells at you: “Do a barrel roll”
Bring this show back
Never played this but reminds me of my first pc game Arctic Fox from the mid 80's
I loooooved this version of SF. I know many say its graphics do not cut it anymore but for the time it was amazing and it still feels better than probably any other SF to date.
the "barrel roll" in this game is actually an aileron roll.
I would hang out with Ryan IRL. Hes so down to earth.
Star Wars: Rebel Assault 2 was a PS1 on rail shooter similar to Star Fox. Awesome game. One of my favorite Star Wars games ever.
Favorite aerial maneuver? The Crazy Ivan.
At least no blackout this time
Ryan's intro was epic AF!!
love the multiplayer n64 dog fights in starfox 64.
lol the picard maneuver
Pro tip: When on space levels in cockpit view, press "SELECT"...you will switch to a third-person view. Third-person view is easier, as you can see your ship and avoid obstacles.
My favourite Snes games, amazing
Did anyone else notice the Enemy pilot sprite fly towards the screen when their ship was destroyed? It's at 19.33, never noticed that before!
If you press the "bomb" button a second time, you detonate it, rather than having to wait. I never kept the 3rd level gun as long as you guys did. Good job.
That spider looking thing is IT and you have to shoot his deadlights.
yes, google does the barrel roll
There's a ton of replay value in this game due to getting the 100% score, and secret warps. Path 3 is also insanely challenging. This is still one of my favorite games of all time, and you guys are on point at the very end of this video. It's one of the only 3D polygon games of it's time that still holds up.
I love this game! It was way ahead of its time..
Zero is my favorite. The control scheme really helps give the game more depth.
lol love the intro guys.
Doom also had the Super FX chip.
I did the barrel roll trick on Google it was awesome
It's just a single line of CSS: "transform: rotate(360deg)". Flash is dead, long live HTML5 :)
LOL great intro that got me psyched af mate
that intro was sick
re: Tom Cruise
"Did they find HIS body because he's old now?"
lol!
I always thought it sounded like Falco was saying "suffering wing damage".
Whoever edited the intro did great lol
