    I had my cavalier in his crate from day 1 of having him. He never cried. Instead he waited for us to get up. I also took him outside to his toilet place and he did a wee! Cavaliers are lovely !

    The tip about putting the paper outside so she knows where to pee in the future...SO HELPFUL! I am always researching for my future cav...their sensitivity was always something I wondered about. Great tip!!

    Your channel is a life saver! I/m a new puppy mom to a 4 month old Cavalier, and I have been so overwhelmed with watching him constantly throughout the day since I have never had an inside dog. I never knew that you could just put them in their crate for naps! no wonder my poor boy is already getting separation anxiety! I've just been letting him lay with me for naps and would only put him in his crate at night. I'm going to try your technique and see if I can finally have some time to myself!

    Hey, great video! How long does it take to house train a cavalier? I know you mentioned the 18 month thing, but I'd assume they "get it" long before that...hopefully?

    My 11 week old Cav will pee inside right after peeing/pooping outside. Like within minutes. We’ve had her for over a week now. She goes outside no problem but she also goes inside if the mood strikes. What do I do?
    She has a crate she sleeps and relaxes. I think she likes it cuz she doesn’t really cry trying to get out.

    Very informative, thanks! How does the training work overnight when the puppies need to go every couple of hours?

    • @herkythecavalier
      @herkythecavalier  7 років тому +5

      The first few nights with both Herky and Milton, we would take them out every 2 hours. Then we slowly add more hours between each potty break! Milton can now hold it for a good 8-9 hours overnight :)

    We are getting our Cavalier at 8 weeks old in a couple of weeks and I want to get a small plastic travel crate for now and then transition to a larger wire crate later. Seems like you did the same thing. What size plastic crate did you get when you first got him? I got a size Small Petsmate one but that still seems quite big.

    I want to get the puppy apartment so that the dog I get will be able to go potty even if I'm not there to let her out. I've heard those are good for training too.

      Find a reputable breeder to make sure the mama dada cavaliers didn’t have issues so the puppies are healthy

    I'm getting a Cavalier in a few months, but I don't know how long I'm gonna have her cage. I'm going into 8th grade, and she's gonna be alone. So I don't want a space that's too small for her, only because I want to put a pee pad in case she needs to go while I'm at school.
    Thanks for reading this, and all I have to ask is: What's your advice for getting a new puppy? (This question applies for anyone that reads this)

    • @sum12stupid4u
      @sum12stupid4u 6 років тому +1

      Hey I'm not entirely sure what your situation is, but the point of crating isn't just for potty training. It's also a safe area for the dog that is theirs, and they should never go to the bathroom in it or have it be used as a punishment. It's extremely counter productive to your pup's progress. You also shouldn't crate a dog more than 4 hours at a time. Your pooch can get really bad anxiety and since they won't go to the bathroom where they sleep it can cause them a lot of pain too and make it more difficult for them to potty train. It can also cause behavioral problems as they're a social breed literally bred for being a lapdog.
      My suggestion is to make arrangements for your dog to be taken out when you aren't home or to set up an area outside of her crate with a puppy pad and food/water and leave her toys, treats, blankets inside of the crate. If you can get a puppy/playpen type of area sectioned off with the crate/food/water/pad inside of so your puppy can't roam the house and pee everywhere, that would be the best option. However you should know this will make it MUCH more difficult to train your puppy to go outside, however she wont be as miserable trying to hold in her pee for 8 hour and her crate wont seem as much like a punishment than a safety spot.
      You really don't want to have your crate be too big either, because then they will go to the bathroom in it and it won't feel as safe for them either. So I recommend getting the crate sized for how big she'll be as an adult and then blocking off a section of it until she grows into the size of her crate. It's honestly my recommendation that if you won't be home that frequently and can't make other arrangements for her during the day, that maybe a Cavalier isn't the best choice. Dogs are bred for human companionship and it's honestly really difficult on a breed like Cavaliers to be home alone all day.
