Hi! I’m a professional groomer, a great tip is not to be scared of the strait shears. What I like to do is use them to take off the bulk of the hair. The thinning shears are great of going back in and “erase” the blunt cut. Another thing about the shears be very careful, using them around her bum, under the belly, armpits, face and paw pads. The reason we use clippers around those areas isn’t because it’s easier it’s because it’s safer. There is a lot of thin skin and nipples that can get cut very easily! Also a great tip when your lifting feet and legs, don’t pull away from their body, keep their leg level with the body, it’s a lot more comfortable for them as they hold still more. Your dogs are so cute!!

Good for you learning to groom your dog! I have been hacking away at my American Cocker Spaniels for about 20+ years. My sweet friend who got me started in agility and obedience was so encouraging. I have never shown them in conformation so grooming has been a little less intimidating.

I have found that using a yoga pilates mat on the table works perfectly for the dog to stand on and it is easy to clean. My dog feels secure standing on it and it doesn't bunch up like the towel.

Just remember when you're using thinning sheers, most of the hair that's been cut remains IN the hair... So when you brush the hair afterwards, the amount of hair that comes out is CRAZY!! So you're not just cutting what you see on the sheers, you're cutting much much more! 😘 Thank you so much for this video!! I really needed this and have been waiting for you to do one! I really like the way you guys treat your dogs. I agree with your parenting techniques and always trust you guys and all the help you give us Cavalier lovers!! God bless! 💗
BTW, my advice on the thinning sheers comes from my using them on myself, lol. I have SUPER thick hair and... I can relate, Herky. 🤪😘😘🐾💞
P.S. How old is Milton now?
*And great job* The girls look great! Especially Herky. Very natural but clean!

Thank you for your video. I have a suggestion and because I have a Aussie and same kind of hair as far as growth and such and I would recommend using a shears to cut most of the long part and then when you go back over it with the thinning shears, then you don’t have to go over that area as much and then you still get the good cut just suggestion.

I started cutting my two Cavi's hair over the last year and I half since I haven't found a groomer since my old groomer moved away. Since I already cut my husbands hair I figured I can do it. I thought your video was helpful and the thinning sheers are def. amazing haha I've been using my husbands on the dogs. I actually use a mini shaver for the bottom of their feet and its soooo much easy than scissors since I don't have to worry about cutting them at all. I still leave the grinch feet on top though because I love them. I also shaving their lower bellies with a bigger shaver with a #1 clip.

One of my boys, Danny, won't even let me brush him. The vet suggested that I give him Benadryl approximately 20 minutes before grooming. It seems to help, but I'll up his dose the next time around, as he was still very anxious.

Anyone know where she got the harness she used to hold the pup up. I have groomed my dogs for 15 years and have a professional sheers and table however I have been unable to find a good harness that keeps then stating up. There is a product out there called the dogupstand but its too expensive for me at the moment. Where could I find this black and red harness? Thanks.

Great job! We have a cavi/corgi mix. We say our Brady is a cross between Farrah Fawcett and Fabio. His hair is beautiful. We have recently started grooming him ourselves. The use of thinning shears is the best idea we have seen so far. We are going to do that next time so that the cut is more natural. Thanks for all the ideas. Love your channel.

I started grooming my Cavalier as a puppy. At that time he didn't like having his feet messed with either. I found getting a big beach towel and sitting on the floor with him helpful. He laid in a position comfortable for him and it was easier to access his feet. It was just a little more relaxiing. I don't know if groomers do this but I find that if the fur under his feet was a little damp it could be easier to cut and I would refine after they were dry. Last, I do use a clipper on him in a few small areas and I found the small ones that use batteries are nice. Being small they get into small areas. I still take him to the groomer 1 or 2 a year for a bath and fake trim. I want him to be familiar with it so he won't be as scared if I absolutely need to take him. Plus my groomer doesn't use crates except with dogs who have issues. She lets them play in a playing area but does provide soft bottom crates if your dog wants to just go nap. You did a great job ! The girls look beautiful.

Thank you for the video on grooming the Cavies. Herky looks exactly like my Cavalier, Anni, same texture and coat as Herky. I think I can do this, I have all the tools, just need confidence. My other Cavalier, Charlie, is Black and Tan, and like Milton is smaller. His coat is straight and very silky, and so very soft. He’s like a stuffed dog. I am going to groom them right now, thanks to your tips!

Thank you so much!!! The groomer I found wanted $65 which is understandable but due to financial reasons I just can’t swing that! I tried on my own and I agree as well with the thinning scissors! Made it so much easier and it’s really hard to mess up using these! My Otis just did not like the trim around his rectum! Was a fight and I was scared but I got it done!

I NEED to get a pair of thinning shears for my cavalier! I have a male so I usually keep his belly feathers cut pretty short to keep it clean of pee. I also attempted to cut some of his side belly feathers (they drag the grass and get wet in the morning) with blunt scissors and now he looks like he has a bad bowl cut 🙈 anyway, at least it’ll grow back. I also like to cut about an inch or two of tail feathers from the base of the tail to keep it poop free. Seems to help!

    • @lwthowe
      @lwthowe 5 років тому +1

After you cut with blunt scissors, follow up with thinning shears and you can blend it in pretty well so it doesn't look like a harsh square cut any more. Comb it out as you go because only some of the cut hair stays on the thinning shears. The rest stays caught up in the hair and can be removed with the comb. So alternate between thinning and combing as you go. I think you'll like the results.

Mats are really common behind the ears. My dog has a super big one that's so close to her skin, I can't use tiny scissors or I'll cut her or myself. In the past, I tried using scissors and to protect her I had my fingers in between her skin and the knot of fur and went in with the other hand and cut myself. I was young and didn't know what I was doing, I could have thought it through but I was trying my best with what I had available at the time. Now I try to use the clippers but my girl freaks out and shakes her head, making it very difficult to take care of the mats behind her ears. I want to be a professional dog groomer one day and I really enjoyed this, thanks! ❤️

I do all of my dogs grooming and have done some trimming of the fur, but am not confident enough to do the sani-cut around the butt area. When my previous dog was very sick, we opted to get it done at either Petco or Petsmart (can’t remember which). It only cost about $7.00 for just having that part trimmed and we were able to stay right there with her so she wouldn’t get scared. It worked out great. Thanks for your video. Good job Mom! I know here in PA they have dog groomers that have their own vans that will come right to your house to groom your dog! Maybe that will help keep them more relaxed being at home than in a salon. We’ve never needed a groomer for Kane since they never need haircuts but we’ve been looking into a few for Catherine! I’m sure there should be some in LA!

Great video!! Thanks for sharing :)
Here’s a TIP someone shared with me for cutting out mats close to the skin - it works well!
    1. Get a flash light (iPhone works well) to highlight the skin to make sure you don’t snip it by accident.
    2. Angle the light so it shines through the fur and point slightly towards the dog’s body, you should see the skin light up bright red/pink.
    3. Hold the light steady while you cut and only cut things that look completely white (the fur) - it helps to have one person hold the light while a second person can just focus on the cutting.
    Hope this helps!

No judging. LOL. I have groomed/clipped my Standard Poodles for many years-last of 6 is a healthy 13 YO. Have an almost 5 YO tri Cav with heavy coat and very long feathers. I do use thinning shears to reduce her feet and leg feathers in the Winter. I also give her a sanitary clip. I have a mild allergy to her but now hives with it too so am considering clipping her shorter in order to deal with dander easier and bathe her more often. I’ve been checking out Cav grooming videos and find yours kind and reasonable. Since it will be a good long while until we travel, may try a clip and thin. She’s very patient for combing and brushing and doesn’t even mind being on the grooming table for her tummy clip so other than preferring a wash and dry dog (after years of clipping and scissoring)it may be worth it.

I think you did great for a first groom 😀 they looked so beautiful! Groomers do put the dogs in crates after grooming them as it's safer for them as there are other dogs to groom and if the other dog was aggressive it could end in a fight or something.

Lucius Maximus I don’t but do that but i only Work one on one with the dogs so they don’t get stressed out when they are here. the only other animals that are in my salon are my ex show guinea pigs and lady I only ever use the crate if have a cross over in clients even then they are only in there for 5 mins max. I like the fact my doggie pals run in to see me when they get groomed ❤️ I love it so much some of them are nervous but they come round. The easiest way to get your dog used to the groomers is after all there puppy vaccines so around 11-12 weeks of age. This way the pup is young enough the noise doesn’t bother the it it doesn’t matter what breed or how much hair they have on them it’s just to get them used to their surroundings and noises as it can be quite scary. Aged 6 months onwards it can be quite difficult to train them to stand and sit nicely on the table so it can actually make them scared of the groomers. If you are thinking of going to a groomers start young, if like herky and Milton you want to groom them yourself that’s also fine cavs in my opinion are the best breed to groom as they are so calm. Other dogs aren’t lol some days it’s like a work out dodging being bitten. I was combing out a tail to a client no knots he just doesn’t like his tail being touched and he turned round and bit my nose 😱 I had to muzzled him for my safety. So yea herky and Milton are very well behaved this particular are dog I have got from over groomers I didn’t train them 😊

The next time you want to cut those cheek mustaches down, try using that clipper again but make sure you are clipping in the same direction as his cheek hair is growing. I adjust the clipper height to medium or high before I start - that way you know you won't be cutting too closely. Even then, use a light touch and don't press down too much on the clipper. You have to go slowly and talk to them sweetly as you trim. If they move abruptly, you run the risk of gapping up the side of their faces, so you have to be extra cautious in keeping them still. The sweeter and more reassuring you talk to them, the easier it will be. The end product is absolutely beautiful though.

I like the shape of their snouts, why are some cavaliers rounder than others? Almost like their more pug than a spaniel.

I hate the neck strap. What if the dog jumps off, will it snap or will the dog hang itself. I like butt, seems safe.

I discovered thinning shears last year! Goodness I love them, I wish I had discovered them years ago when I had a golden retriever! They would be fantastic for keeping a goldens butt floof under control. I use them with my britany to keep his butt floof in check but also to keep his massive ear floof under control. He gets matts behind his ears and keeping it thinned back there goes a long way in preventing matts. If you have a long haired dog I cant reccommend thinning shesrs enough! Do be careful because they are wicked sharp.

I also cut my pom's furry paws by myself since there is always dry muds and other gross things stuck in it.
You did such a good job for your first full trim ❤👏👍
I have a tip for you if Herky n Milton hate going to groomers, just like my dog, I usually call the groomer and they groom my pup at home, so I can stay close to him to prevent anxiousness and reduce stress. But I only call the groomer when his coat got so long which is about once every 3 months, and I told them to only trim the edges, since I hate those haircuts that looked unnatural like the teddy bear style ( my dog is a Pomeranian btw ) that is why I don't call the groomer that often.☺

Thank you for this video, I don't know anyone that has a cavalier so this video was very helpful! For me, Burgundy's butt hair gets so long supper quick and I have taken her to the groomers and I'm not a fan how they cut it. I'm going to try to cut her hair myself when her butt hair grows back hahaha! ❤️❤️

When you brush any dog. You won’t catch all the matts jus by brushing. You have to use a comb too because hair can be matted at the roots right next to the skin.

    Hi Herky,
You are very pretty. What I'd like to know is how to make my king charles have a nice round bum. It is rather difficult to explain but I'll give it a try. The roundness includes from upper portion of the thigh (in the middle of, but still towards the top?) and up over the tail symmetrically. My pooch was groomed like that one time and I really liked it. She looked so cute. Was this achieved by the surrounding hair being cut shorter and then some how shaping that whole bum area with a curved scissors? Would really like to know how this was done. When it comes to the tail, when you make it look like a fan shape is the part of the tail close to the bum shorter or longer than the tip of the tail?
Thank you in advance for your effort and time in answering my questions. I really enjoyed watching your videos.
    Love Always,
    Patty Teare

Thank you soooo much for posting this! I've been looking for a video or instructions on how to deal with the cavalier pants at home for such a long time and this is the best one I've found so far, it looks so natural. Thanks for the tip on the thinning shears, I'll be ordering some today.

Hi! Love the video! Just looking for advice, I’ve been really looking into getting an emotional support pet because I’m a college student and my housing doesn’t allow animals and would love to get a cavalier but am afraid of what others will think because they’ll know why I have a pet. I also will have to be living with roommates and am worried they’ll get really annoyed. Do you think I should go for it or wait until I graduate? Love you!
