Rent being so expensive there is really not all too surprising. Hawaii is made up of a few relatively small but beautiful islands, and there’s no shortage of Americans and foreigners who want to move there. But there’s not exactly many places to establish new housing complexes on small islands, so the cost of living therefore increases to fit the demand.

As a Hawaiian, it's sad to see that tourists get a bad rap because of the actions of a few. For the most part, tourists are not disrespectful and try not to bother anyone, but because one family out of a thousand didn't follow the rules, it makes all tourists look bad; even the good ones. Sadly, this results in many people in my community and other Hawaiians hating haoles and tourists so much that it becomes borderline or actually racist and xenophobic. Yes, some problems in Hawaii are related to tourism, but not ALL of them are. Some issues are caused by ourselves, but locals are quick to point fingers at outsiders because it's easier to do so rather than to own up and fix it ourselves. And the worst part is that it works since locals already hate haoles and the haoles feel bad for things that happened a hundred years ago.
@@Kayla_Sandoval not a single thing they said was true. There's solely talking about the issue with foreigners and people from the continental United States going to Hawaii and breaking the rules. Not the fact that foreigners and people from the main continental United States are buying out Hawaiian homes and putting them on VRBO and Airbnb so that indigenous people and people who have grown up on Hawaii cannot buy homes they can't even afford to rent the homes. Because tourism has destroyed the economy of Hawaii
What I don’t understand is why Hawaiians don’t vote to fix these issues. Their economy relies on tourism, so making them feel unwelcome is unproductive.
@@nicktune1219 Hawaii's economy does not rely on tourism. Corporations rely on tourism to Hawaii. Those corporations do not benefit the economy of Hawaii. The problem is tourism. You can't stop an American citizen from buying a house in Hawaii you can't stop an American citizen from charging rent for that location and not living there or putting it on to Airbnb or verbo unless you ban Airbnb and Verbo. Hawaiians can't vote on something that is a constitutional right of sorts. States cannot go against the US Constitution. So Hawaiians cannot restrict traveling and they cannot fix the issues with corporations. Because corporations are to be privately owned in a capitalist society which the United States is.
@@alexandrahenderson4368 they could pass laws banning rentals and new resorts, and redo zoning areas to limit hotels and corporations from moving in. There are many ways to solve the problem.
thats awfully rude. it’s not the tourist fault people are winding up homeless, it’s that people raise prices for everything WHEN tourists visit. you should definitely welcome them and wish them an amazing time, but they shouldn’t move in there, they should just take their leave soon. as long as they are nice and don’t trash they land, why can’t they visit?
it’s not, well in general it’s not ALL of the tourists fault. some go to relatives some go to resorts instead of STAYING. don’t blame it on everyone it gives a bad reputation for EVERYONE even if they have good intentions
This is happening in Puerto Rico know everyone is renting as airbnb and you can't find housing and the rents are like in the states, people here don't make much money to pay more than they make something has to be done about this
And it's more often than not foreigners or people who don't even live there buying houses or renting and putting them on air BNB. It's ridiculous. People complain so much about immigration which literally helps economies like the US with lowering birth rates... But they don't complain about indigenous peoples getting kicked off their land by colonizer 2.0

I’m from Hawaii but had to move away because I was evicted from my home since the owner wanted to turn it into a Airbnb, and since housing was so expensive on the rest of the island my only options were to live on the streets or find somewhere in a different state. Enjoy Hawaii but please go home, natives are rapidly losing their homes.
i’m sorry you lost your home. i totally agree that people should not move to hawaii, but i think that they should enjoy their visit and leave probably within 2-3 weeks. although, tourists are not to blame for prices raising; it’s the people who raise the prices. i do hope that you can revisit hawaii soon!
I’m from Hawaii and i got a few things to say. As a Hawaiian I deeply ask you to stay but make sure you go! Tourists that come here cause inflation, or people getting kicked out of their house. And tourists are expected to pay more. Where I live, just across from my area, one area of homes cost about 1-4 MILLION dollars. And in Waikiki, nothing but tourists. So please, stay, but leave soon. Mahalo from a local hawaiian 🤙🏾. P.S make sure you wen respect da locals 😂🤙🏾
Yes, it deeply hurts me the prices are insane and our salaries aren't going up either. People that aren't locals that mostly come from a fairly good background can afford to buy a house while the original inhabitants can't. Yes it's a beautiful place and a hot spot for tourists but soon the only people living in Hawaii will be tourists.
@@hunterlord25 Agreed! Prices are unrealistically high. Which gives locals no homes. It hurts me a lot to speak about it, and my Hawaiian pride feels as if my land is being disrespected.
@@fallen1219 Well getting a better high paying job could also possibly be an issue. Houses are millions of dollars, and not every homeless person can just magically get millions of dollars. Since the government sets high expectations when tourists come, more tourists mean more money, more money means more eviction, more eviction equals homeless. And “getting a better job” isn’t really an option because there is barely any jobs that will pay such high amounts in Hawaii. Most things you see in Hawaii on the west side is homeless people, and food trucks. Food trucks are small things for some families to make money, and stay home. However, you are right on how money is the issue. But getting a better job is not very correct.
I’m not native Hawaiian but lived there for a while and we moved bc we couldn’t even find parking when trying to have a family day at the beach and prices are ridiculous, drugs are a huge problem and when u park at the beach sometimes ppl break windows to get your money and homelessness is crazy bro. And natives are annoyed bc tourists aren’t respecting the land, buying houses there for vrbo and airbnb and the locals can’t find houses to live in, people are taking stuff from the island, ppl aren’t reading the signs! So if you plan to visit please respect the locals and the sea life, READ SIGNS and if you go out try to go to local restaurants not chain restaurants (prices are crazy so most ppl just eat pbjs or ramen)
No one should feel guilty for wanting to visit a beautiful place. There are people that travel to multiple places that are beautiful and the argument remains the same. Life is just becoming too expensive, and that’s the root of the issue, not the place.

I have lived in Hawaii for 35 years, mostly BI. Don't forget the LOCALS that leave abandoned cars on the roadside (having a car towed for recycle only cost $25). The ones that push their dead refrigerators and stoves off the back of their pickup trucks on to the roadside by pristine (WAS pristine) forests instead of driving a few more miles to the transfer station. Cleaning up after their dogs at the beach. This ain't the tourists or the transplants. It is the born and raised locals. They forgot what the word "aina" means. I know Hawaii has a similar issue to my friends homeland- non tourist Times become wastelands, where entire towns or villages are empty because the airbnbs that were once houses have no bookings.
For the people complaining about tourism: Hawaii’s economy is mostly based off tourism. Tourism helps the economy there and it provides a large percentage of the jobs there. Also the price of housing has to go up to meet the demand of people wanting to move there because there isn’t much room to build more housing complexes on those small islands, so obviously it’s expensive to live there.
It’s sad how Hawaiian’s are becoming homeless because of tourists but I don’t really think tourists should be blamed. It’s beautiful there. The only thing that should be expensive is the trip there and resort hotels where tourists stay at. They shouldn’t be raising the prices of everything else for the locals too because that’s their actual home.
I agree, you can’t blame the tourists. It’s up to the government to protect their people. There needs to be legislature concerning pricing and air bnb’s
Or even tourism restrictions…. but then you realize that several facets of the economy thrive off of tourism and Hawaii relies on the money it receives from it. Thus, obviously it’s not the tourists who are to blame. It’s most likely the overly inflated prices of regular store items, like you said.
⚠️Here's another fact about Hawaii, that you wouldn't know unless you've been, cuz it is very obvious! But did you know that the tourist not only destroy the land but also kinda helps at the same time! And they also are pushing all the homeless out to the west side, so no tourists can see the reality of the amount of locals getting kicked out of their rightful island! They also made it “public knowledge” (even tho they’ve been doing it for years now) for any homeless who wants a one way ticket from their home to the mainland can get a ticket!!!! Literally pushing them out and bribing them with a lil cash to make the disappear!⚠️

Tourist get a bad rap because of all of them as a whole. Hawaii cannot support tourism.

It hurts me a lot to speak about it, and my Hawaiian pride feels as if my land is being disrespected.
get a better job if money is the issue

They shouldn’t be raising the prices of everything else for the locals too because that’s their actual home.
as a hawaiian you are absolutely correct 👍🏼
if anything those things should be taxed heavily to help support locals 😞
I agree, you can’t blame the tourists. It’s up to the government to protect their people. There needs to be legislature concerning pricing and air bnb’s
Or even tourism restrictions…. but then you realize that several facets of the economy thrive off of tourism and Hawaii relies on the money it receives from it. Thus, obviously it’s not the tourists who are to blame. It’s most likely the overly inflated prices of regular store items, like you said.
Blame the government and world leaders. They have enough to solve the worlds problems 10x over.

You guys should always remember if you’re going to a different place to travel be respectful read signs it’s really not that hard (No I am not from Hawaii but I know this) plus if you do you could have a better experience.
The music tho!
as a person who has lived in hawaii their whole life, we have a beautiful place! Mahalo for coming into our land.
@Lia_emoim also from maui, up in haiku
My aunts ex husband married a native Hawaiian. He adapted nicely. He's considered one of them now. I miss him but he's living the rest of his life as best he can. His wife is amazing and I love them both soo much.
I am Samoan, but its sad to what's happening in Hawaii. My mother was born in hawaii, and raised. Reading all these comments make me question what people feel about Hawaii when they live there.
On my flight to Hawaii when I was 7 my tooth fell out and then I handed it to a flight attendant. Visited Hawaii again recently and met the same flight attendant and she still tells the story to little kids about what to do just in case, so that’s something you are told if you’re a kid
No offense but the locals in the comments should shut up. Tourism is most of your economy, after Covid yall had to have money pumped into that place because of the lack of tourism. Secondly, don’t blame the tourists, blame the greedy locals who are raising the prices. SMH yalls whining makes me want to take a 3 month vacation there
Right!
It is so beautiful then i started listening to the music and realized it was hunger games i just finished watching the last one last night and apparently they are coming out with another one
Telling people not to go somewhere on earth is LITERAL xenophobia
it's funny because people say don't go to hawaii due to tourism but without tourism it'd be in shambles and without colonization it'd be even worse
The best place to visit in Hawaii is Waianae.

Hoobrah, you like beef haolie girl? 😂
When I went to Honolulu with my family our plane had 3 rows of seats and we sat in the middle row so we didn’t get to see anything outside until we were getting off the plane 🥲
UPDATE:
We went back to Honolulu for a week during winter break in January and I still didn’t see anything cause I was in the aisle seat💀
I’m a Pacific Islander and yet I didn’t even know about all these problems everyone’s talking about. I don’t live in Hawaii but my grandpa does and he’s never told me about it.
I feel bad for the Hawaiian people whose homes have burned down. They have to see tourist come to their island and buy things the aren’t even able to afford :(
What they dont tell you are the tears when you have to leave...😢
I hear you, it's almost as if you don't visit, because you know how awful it is to leave
@@prokodza I've only done it a few times but after a couple of weeks of great food, beautiful beaches, super laid back locals, it's very hard to pack your bags and come home .
That’s why I stayed forever. 😊
Interesting song choice 😅
Lesson learned from the comments: don't go to Hawaii 👍
real! I’m like dang…
i was there recently, and it’s an amazing experience. but definitely don’t stay for too long and make sure to be respectful to the cultural sites if you are going to go there
I live in a Tourist area, and in in Hawaii right now on Holiday. I totally get why people who live here, don’t enjoy how many tourists there are all year’ round. Someone said “Drug addiction is no joke.” That’s everywhere, it’s just not Hawaii. I have been brought up to respect all cultures, and I love the land; it’s so beautiful, and what people are doing for the greed: like destroying land is disgusting. I always get confused why Homes and stuff don’t seem a rich as you’d think, and planes aren’t as advanced as you’d think. Does American take a bunch of Hawaii’s money, or something like that? Another statement, who would disrespect locals? I would love to see locals, they are such beautiful people. The place is extremely expensive, and it’s horrible for the people who live here. God bless you, and God bless the people who live in Hawaii.
To all the locals telling people to leave. Stfu. Im someone who's lived on hawaii my entire life, yall are being greedy. Everywhere else on the mainland would welcome you to stay with open arms.
can we appreciate for a moment the masterpiece under this video 🛐
title: the hanging tree
reference: The Hunger Games Mockingjay
Well, that’s Hawaii!! I recently just came back from there
That is a beautiful sight. I remember the first time I flew into New York City, but it was at nighttime and beautiful in a very different way back then.
I think they should make a law that says you can’t buy a house in Oahu unless you live there. Also Tahiti has that law
Btw I’m sorry for y’all but if you were wondering , song is from hunger games two!
"Alright thank you for flying with Hawaiian Airlines, but haoles who aren't from here just remember to go home"
"If you move here shame on you"
@@Heythebrodyboyits not there fault 💀

That’s Delta, and she’s Hawaiian
as a person who lives in hawaii, it really is beautiful

ARE YOU, ARE YOU, COMIN’ TO THE TREE?
I went to hawaii last year and EVERYTHING was so expensive, they should give the people there discounts on stuff.
it’s bc of all the tourism and not even the locals can afford to live there anymore cus of how many people go there
I feel u all hawaiians. We, turkish people, are getting kicked out of our own country too, because of arabs, ❤❤❤ sending much love and support!
they shouldve told you not to go
why
Imagine being so dumb for telling someone not to go back to see their own family typical kpoop
@@maddss777he reason is because since tourists come to the island a LOT the people who are born in Hawaii are starting to be kicked out of their homes because tourists have been paying way more than them for them to use it as an airbnb so this means the homeless population is starting to rise, not only that but many tourists often times disrespect the island and its people whether its intentional or not. Basically some of the natives are tired of tourists and are starting to not be able to handle it anymore
@@yotokuschmeel4287Well, until our economy isn’t completely dependent on tourism, us locals are just going to have to deal with it.

I feel this way coming home to Jamaica. I cry sometimes, especially when I've been away for awhile. My heart just fills up. I aways try to get the right window seat❤
Same for California, I was born and raised in southern CA but can’t afford to live there. I miss my home
