Another option is to use a sculpted smoke trail to disguise a wire rod. Good option for Mandolorians
Way better idea
BattleFX sell some amazing ones. Either STL and Resin Prints are great for that.
This.
After I saw some examples of this, I was sold on the idea.
Just not sure if I want to use some 3rd party pre-sculpted ones, or try and do it myself.
I love this idea!
I always see those smoke trails but never imagined that could use wire for the armature...
Thanks Duke Leto Atreides May the shai hulud bless you, and the water show you the path!
I must be one of the three people on the planet that actually doesn’t mind flight stands 😂
Admittedly they aren’t amazing, but they serve their purpose as far as I’m concerned…
Great looking bases, fantastic job as always dude!
I think I must be number 2 because I've never understood the hate, they just don't bother me in the slightest, if anything I'm almost of the opposite opinion that they look sillier bouncing off large convenient rock structures.
I think they look okay, but I deep-strike on roof with my Inceptors so much that everytime one model falls off the roof the stem will break. I tried a hack where my boss taught me to drill a hole into the back of the model and sharpen the stem to stick it in - still breaks. So at last, I just took some brass sticks and stuck them into the base, with some rocks to pile on the base to cover up the base of the stick. Works wonders, and I actually liked the aesthetic of the metal flying stem even though it's not "transparent"
3) Never noticed them enough when building to hate them, I just use to cut some taller and shorter to have different sizes for more interest.
For me, the only problem with these ones comes with larger models. For AOS Kharadron Overlord's boats the flight stands don't give to the model enough stability, so you have no choice but making "something" stronger and integrating it on the base.
Same i dont mind them either
I just got a box of Inceptors as a gift and this video came down from the heavens to free me from the flying stands
Thank you!
Yeah, you can do all kinds of flying bases that way. I used a bunch of tall resin barrels for my Kharadron Overlords balloon guys, as well as just stacked-up cork plates to give the Impression of a craggy plateau.
There's a weird trick in vision where if you paint something matte black (provided your models aren't already black) your brain will "edit out" the black
With the Nighthaunt range they have done an amazing job at creating flying miniatures. I love retro minis and have more oldhammer than new, but I’m glad GW is improving this aspect of their sculpts
Oooh awesome video I’ve been stuck with how to base mine because of those rubbishy gw stands until now!
Wow, ridiculously impeccable timing!
Assembling my first set of Inceptors and was struggling to find an alternative to those pesky flight stands. Thnx Jay 😅👍🏼
The same here - just primed my suppressors and was thinking forward about how to attach them securely to their "weird lightsabers" :)
the idea of using the cork to texture the model magic is fantastic! great advice as always.
Bike wheel spokes, on larger flyers you can glue in the nipple and screw them on or off for transport.
Awesome format. Quick, visual and easy to replicate. Thx!
Great idea! Would love to seem them painted
I needed this, thank you
Great video. I did something similar with my Inceptors from Dark Imperium boxed set. I've used cork as I didn't have dried bark at hand. Your look way better thanks to this.
As someone who owns a ton of Endrinriggers, i needed to see this.
Thanks!
So I’m only just now stumbling upon this gem. Flying stands have long been the bane of my existence.
Nice! I've been looking for an alternative to GW flying stands, but there's nothing out there. Thoug I do want to ask, what would you do with larger models with Flight Stands like New Stormdrake Guard for AoS, or Kharadron boats? Even medium sized models like Idoneth Eels? Because I don't think there's a wood-chip big enough for many of those.
sometimes you just have to break out the nails for stronger flying stands
At the LGS I work in, someone has a giant eldar plane that he, no joke, mount onto the base with angle brackets.
I use brass sticks as a pin to pin through my inceptors and suppressors into the base.
Small plane bases tho, I just ran with the original. I think those do the job.
I saw one very cool alternative over on Tabletop Titans; a viewer sent them in a model where they had 3d printed a big poofy exhaust plume that you glued to the jet pack. It made it so the model hovered a few centimeters over the base. Looked great
@@lieutenanteclipse9975 I got a plexi tube that was going in the trash to use as a base for my Tigersharks. I had to make them ~10" tall so that it wouldn't be constantly bumping into terrain on the boards that I use.
The magnet baron has alternatives you my like.
Great tips all jammed into a concise video! Thanks so much for keeping it brief!
Awesome look, I love the pine bark 👍
That's cool. I may use these to get rid of the old flying bases for my other Deffkoptas. Thank you!
Nice. I use Crayola air dry clay on terrain and basing sometimes. Hey, Whatever Works. I magnetized my Suppressors so I could detach them from the bases for storage but otherwise the principle is the same.
I really wish GW thought even a little about making cooler Terrain themed bases for flyers, Ahwell Atleast we can :D
The new Ork deffkoptas have terrain integrated into how they are supported, so clearly they're capable of making it look good.
@@sarrakitty Bout bloody TIME! Only took 5+ months 🤣
i love watching your videos at this moment
nice and no brainer so great distraction
its really helping in this time of mourning of the loss of my dad
i really loved the 1 with your closet of unfinished models (my corner of shame and shortage of time or other projects)
i use to work for a gw assosiated store so we had all the same rules as a real gw store only we sold more then only gw articles
before gw made it a thing like it is now back in the good old days of back room gaming and modeling
but you often talk about things wrong but maybe make a list of things gw dous better than any other company / 3d printer
would love to see your take on it
ps i would love to look in your bit box :P
I like jewelry wire cut to the size I want and painted black. Holds up much better than the plastic flight stands.
Oooh amazing I have some inceptors and suppressors that I want to do this with. Your video was really helpful as always
Fun tip - put paint on the ends of the paperclip before you drill. Dabbing it in the you want to attach it creates a 'target' for your drill
While I don't mind the flight stands, your rock bases turned out nicely! I really like how their angle supports the models' movement.
Awesome!
Yesterday I was browsing through youtube (including your channel), hoping to find alternatives to flying stands, and tadam, today you magically answer 😃
By the way, I was considering sticking my flying nuns on bases with concrete walls (made like you showed in a previous video), as their shoes soles are perpendicular to the horizontal plane.
Man I hate those stands...thanks for breaking one for me.
Nice job with the bases they look 100 times better.
Great bases but they are no longer flying but just about to fall off their precarious perches ;)
I Prefer the original flying stands even if I have to pin them to the model which is a pain.
Also prefer my bases to be fairly basic so they do not take attention away the model or look out of place on different battlefields.
The biggest issue is the jet packs IMHO.
This. It seems that Jay's "alternative" flying stand is to just make the troopers not fly :P
I'm thinking that by using a little bit of foliage, tall grass etc around the foot, you could create a little more 'separation' between figure and base. I might even try positioning him, facing the cork outcrop more. It would give the impression of approaching the rocks and enhance the levitation effect. Great basing, I'd love to see them, (and the figures) painted up.
I also think that a black painted metall rod looks great, because you tend to not see it at all. At least you see it way less than the shiny GW stuff. I like to make a mixture of terrain and a well hidden metall rod that creates the illusion of a mini flying.
personally, I use coat hangers cut to 1-1.5" lengths to use as flying bases for (Tau) drones.
Looks so much better
there is this company that sells STLs/prints of smoke stacks that come out of the jump packs. the ones for the sisters of battle are awesome
Great demo. It would be good to see them painted.
You'll find super glue will work better if you wet the pin and put it the hole in the bark chip. Do this a couple of times. Then apply super glue to the pin. As the little moisture transferred from the pin to the absorbent wood/ bark will stop the glue being soaked away too fast from the part before it sets.
It's worth nothing. That it's better to add the miniature to the pin once the pin dries in the bark chip. That way you avoid super glue frosting.( it'll only happen when you've over applied water .Or Murphys law when it's an expensive miniature)
Excellent! I'd love to see you paint the bases on a livestream
Reminds me of the og storm boy bases being decorated to look like they just landed. Looks amazing
My friend uses chunks of slate for his Inceptors. They work great and make them unlikely to fall over.
For cheap flight stands do this:
1. Go to your local dollars store.
2. Buy a few packs of the cheap small paint brushes with the clear acrylic handles.
3. Cut acrylic handles at the brush feral and whatever height you want.
4. Glue to model, glue to base.
Nice job just subscribed :)
One good use I've found, is BLOOD! you can hold the flying base over a candle, and slowly pull apart for a thin plastic rod. glue this to a chainsword or something, and put a bunch of blood for the blood god on it, and there you have it! some bloody streaks! albeit slightly brittle, it can really add a lot to a model!
no way EOB saw or even possibly made the tg thread about this exact topic yesterday? could it be that he's our guy???
Cool now I have an Idea for my jump guys(Vincent Price laugh) thanks
This was so cool!
I was curious if you had a similar idea, but for Tomb Blades. I hate the flying stands and want something better!
I’ll definitely have to copy this to make the bases for my suppressors, just with a dash of snow to make em match the rest of the army
Nice! I have an Inceptor squad that could use a similar upgrade. “GW flying stands are the worst” #Confirmed!
Great video! but i was wondering why i could buy these pine bark nuggets. I cant seem to find anything except mulch
Excellent solution. Any ideas on what to do for other stands, like eldar jetbikes?
Gw has gotten better with the floating model in more recent years, especially in aos releases.
A stiff armature and some kind of putty or clay would work well I think and give a little spring to help cope with the inevitable knock they will take. Would work best for jump packs I think.
What is the bark product you’re using? I’m from Australia and finding this stuff is proving difficult.
I wanna do something like this with the new stormcast stormdrake guard, but those guys are up really high, so I gotta get creative.
Genius I would never thought about that
Interesting video.
This technique can definitely work for more dynamic models, like those who look like they're just about to jump or land.
However - For this particular models, In my personal opinion I don't think it's the right choice. The models themself look out of place already, like they lack any kind of dynamic whatsoever. To greenlight this design in the first place is questionable. Even on their flying stands, they just don't look right. They would definitely benefit from a more static position, with both feet on the ground or close to the ground. But this are just my two cents.
You did a great job with the bases and as long as you're satisfied with how it worked out, it's all fine.
very cool man! i will have to do this oneday!
Flying stands are fun. I attach them to suppressors and Inceptors feet, rather than their butts.
It makes them a whole bodies length taller than every other primaris marine.
Now do a scenic base for a large flyer! 😁
At least the old clear pegs you could magnetize without too much trouble, I've got some of these for my Kharadron Overlord Giff conversions and boy do I hate them.
The GW flying stand only really works with the Battle Sisters with Jump Packs.
I did the same principle but I used Pillars from the WizKids DnD minis lines.
You should coat the sand + pebbles with a generous amount of diluted white glue to seal them in. I find this step essential to ensure the sand/pebbles don't flake off and go everywhere in my carrying case :/
I plan on casting flight bases for my minis that come in small medium and large
I've never understood the insane levels of salt flying stands seem to illicit in some circles, these newer curved stands are a vast improvement over the old straight ones. I'd much rather have a discrete clear stem supporting my mini than have them all bounding off scenery - that can work for a character but a whole squad dragging around elaborate scenery with them just looks silly imo.
I have to agree. I just mentally erase the flying stand because it's not "part" of the model, whereas terrain is included and can look weird.
I do find the flying stands very easily broken though, I actually stick a paperclip up the model's butt. Thinner so it's less noticable and stronger.
The straight ones were fairly limiting in how they attached to models, so I understand why GW changed to these curved ones. However, these curved clear rods are incredibly fragile. As someone who hangs around Transformers spaces a lot, it is a common sight every time a Transformers toy with clear plastic somewhere near a hinge releases to find people snapping them accidentally. I guarantee Jay did NOT put much effort into snapping that stand in this video, and these flying stands are meant to be load-bearing too. You would have to be exceptionally careful when transporting them, much moreso than for any other kind of model.
I think they look... fine, but they break really easily which is unaceptable.
And this is why orks are the best, only one clear plastic stand and it is the plane which is perfectly fine
Got any great ideas for Tau drones? ;)
unpainted brass rods are cool,
but maybe better for bigger models
Jay! Which is the video where you paint these models??
this intro beat was fire
I gotta say frankly the flying stands don’t look the best but for me more they don’t really give a dynamic look to it the method of building it up on the base seems like a much more attractive alternative.
I once had one of these break on my Venetari custodes, and contacted them if I could buy a replacement.
They don't even sell those seperatly xD
Games Workshop is seriously embarrassing themselves with these flying stands. Such gorgeous models like the new Dragon Knights for SCE on their stupid, flimsy stands. Is sculpting and molding some ruined tower as a base for them to fly above it really costs so much?
Hey - did someone in germany find a similar product to the bark Nuggets? ... cant find anything :) thanks in advance!
i dont necessarily think the flying stands look too bad, the issue with me (particularly so with these awful curved ones) is that they simply dont hold the model up well at all. Especially with heavier models like space marines or custodes. these tips were awesome and i will definitely be employing them in my future hobby endeavours!
How would you handle something bigger like a Valkyrie or New AoS dragons?
How would you build a flight stand for an Eldar Jet bike?
Ngl, if I end up getting any models with flying stands, I'm probably just going to magnetize them if I can, that way they'd be way better to transport & if the stand actually breaks, it's an easy fix and you don't need to knife the ends off the base or the model.
And i was just racking my brain how to get the damn flight stands on my Kharadron to ceep from snapping off time and again; solution -> don’t use them xD
Yeah GW flying stands have never been good, and those new ones are even worse. On my old Eldar jetbikes I used to just use the very bottom of the flight stand so they were hovering like speeder bikes in Star Wars. Only problem I ever had was someone accused me of modeling for advantage since the bikes weren’t as high up. The judge ruled in my favor since they were still modeled on flight stands and the rules didn’t specify how high they had to be. I seem to have gone a bit off subject… love the wood chip bases!
My buddy really didn’t like the stands that came with his Custode flying guys, so he used rocks he found in his yard to do the same effect. No idea how he got them to stick though.
I have a request. How to do Plasma burnt earth, such as after an orbital bombardment or if hit by a plasma gun
your opinion is... BASED!
I have been tempted to do something like this for my adepta sororitas, I personally don't mind how the flight stand looks but it breaks off so easily, one slight knock and the miniature is off the stand, especialy for the sisters. And glueing it back together is the most anoying thing ever, and the super glue ruins the paint.
Will definetly do this for the upcoming dragons! the clear pole is just... horrible
Doesn't stick to model, breaks easily, and not really that aesthetically pleasing trying to pull off the "levitating" look.
You could also 3d print something in clear resin.
I don't really see an issue with the new flying stands . If anything , they're a bazillion times better than the old ugly "flying stands" some older models used to have like the metal Seraphim . Just an ugly chunk of metal underneath the feet that didn't blend into the base ...
I understand that in terms of sturdiness they might not be the optimal solution as their thinness means they're prone to snapping , but in terms of aestethic , they're just fine .
Sometimes i really feel like people go out of their way to find issues with every single piece of item that GW produces , and there's little more to it than that .
Put Magnet on thick pla stick it the best option too.
"Time to finish off the bottom." Giggity. @1:27
I would be interested to see other soloutions. The flying stands aren't great but I don't like the more common soloution of having them touching something. I'm interested to see if anyone has found a decent way of making them look like they are flying.
Yes, but fiddly. Strong wire - I have some very stiff wire in my "real" toolbox. The real issue is finding a sturdy way to place it in the miniature or stand, often needs to be built up and/or drilling where a model is substantially thick. You can even put smaller models a bit off-centre, but the base needs to be weighted.
I also recently acquired some bicycle spokes. They seem they could also work. Bonus, these area already black.
Mate you should play eldar.. I've done about 40 jet bikes with stones and 2 part epoxy.. the other option is magnets
PS: stones are better as they remove the top heaviness.. but they need 2 part epoxy.. I usually epoxy a dozen bases at a time
What store sells that bark?
does that clay dry?
Another option for creating rocky texture on putty is to use a ball of scrunched up aluminium (aluminum for you Americans) foil.
This is basically what I always do hate those sticks haha. Not sure what to do for tau drones though, probably not worth it
Technically is not a UA-cam short, but cool tips like that would work great on that format... What you guys think?
Hmm. Totally should have done this with my suppressors. I ended up pinning the flight stands.. God that was not fun.
can anyone link me to those pine bark nuggets? been looking for something like that!
Does that mean they get -1 attack in close combat due to the loss of their butt saber?
and how do i fix my landspeeder on that rock?
maybe a small nail?
Clear
Plastic
Straws
Cut to height size.
