What I really like about the song itself is that "Martha" isn't rhymed with anything at any point in the song. So you could throw anyone's name in there and keep all the lyrics, and I think subconsciously it helps some of us relate to it a lot more

In my mind this song is not about depression: but rather it's supposed to be about how trying to figure what's "wrong" with someone is very stressful for the person you are snooping in upon, and how constantly having people theorizing about the problems in Martha's life is her biggest problem.

Back in early 2021, my dad was confirmed to have caught Covid, and was very close to passing away. In the 3 weeks that he spent in the hospital where one of the most despair-filled days I have ever felt in my life. But whenever I was about to cry, I would hear this song. My dad didn't pass away, thankfully. But this song has helped me during trying times. So thanks, Mr. Temmer. Thanks for everything.

@@thephonepersonally Do I really need proof...? This song resonates a lot with my personal experience with depression. I’m not feeling well, but everyone else around me still seems to find reasons to smile. And then they look at me and try to figure out what’s up. I feel a lot like Martha in this situation. To me the song feels like a direct metaphor for that kind of experience, where you’re the one depressed person in a sea of people who aren’t quite there yet. But if you see it a different way that’s fine, I’m not saying you’re wrong. All I’m saying is that it means something to me on a personal level, beyond just being a song.
