As the ex owner of the Beetle, I’m so glad to hear that those hideous wheel trims are heading for landfill. Nasty things!
The Mondeo is very much loved and will carry on its journey with us.

I like the idea of a turnaround series, either trading up or just taking on more little project cars and making enough from them to keep it worth doing. Gives you a string of cars to play with, and gives us endless fresh content. What's not to love?

This short turnaround format has worked well, I love the repairs and tinkering more than general reviews as they are a far more true to real life of us folk who appreciate and daily cars of this age and price point. The Mondeo series was riveting from the Off!
Coincidentally, I was parked alongside a Beetle of this era the other day and was admiring its lines and stance...a very decent car and looking forward to your experience with this one.....great work Matt

It's incredible that the Mondeo is already a 1/4 century old!
The Beetle looks good. It could use some nice alloys (from an Audi TT?)
It being a TDI it means it will get great mileage if driven gently and the PD engine is very tuneable as well. Fun car!

For me the Beetle got a whole lot more attractive when you revealed which motor it has 👍
Some MK1 TT V6 BBS wheels, a stage one map and heated leather retrofit I think it will be a wonderful daily 👍
If your unfamiliar with the VW PD motor, you’re going to be impressed with its midrange once fixed/mapped.

Beetles of that vintage are just MK4 Golfs under the skin. Be thankful that you've got the hatchback rather than the convertible. I've worked on a 2007 convertible which has appeared on my own channel and some of the convertible specific parts cost more than the equivalent hatchback with door window regulators being one such example. The spark plugs on the 1.6 petrol engines are a pig of a job to change. The headlights are almost as easy to remove as on my Volvo XC90 so changing headlight bulbs should a breeze. Rear brake discs (and the wheel bearing assemblies) can also be changed without having to remove the brake caliper bracket. I've even done a clutch change on my own on the same Beetle. I had to borrow an engine crane from the local garage to lift up the gearbox so I could get it fitted back on the engine. The 1.9 PD engine is a good unit.

As someone who loves a MK4 Golf, I think a MK4 Golf based car was the perfect swap! Worth noting - that boost pipe issue may not be cured by a new pipe alone. It's a common issue, and a more rigid fix is putting a self tapping screw through the joint once the new pipe is fitted, to keep it tucked up tight sealing properly. A quick Google should explain it better than I have here. Great video Matt, looking forward to seeing what you do with the Bug!

It's still going well, the engine is smooth and pretty much bulletproof. I've bought an e46 BMW for peanuts on an auction (below scrap value) and I must say the Mondeo is nicer to drive and more spacious and comfortable. If the boost pipe pops off its most likely just the metal clip. My wife has the same engine but in a 2003, be careful of the sills there's no drain holes in them and they hold water and rust from the inside out. The top dash section is easy to swap out the centre section slides forward and reveals the fixings for the piece.

It needed one replacement (manual) gearbox during that time. He ended up selling the car to someone who used it for long trips to the coast, it only died eventually when the inside filled up with water somehow and killed all the electrics.

I enjoyed the mondeo series, it's nice to see a realistic change (not expensive or hugely complex jobs) being done and in a short timescale but seeing a real transformation. Many projects are either too long you lose interest (or there's too much back catalogue to catch up on), or on TV it all 'magically' happens, half of which is outsourced, and the whole thing is under an hour and is completely devoid of detail. This hits the sweet spot.

I'm the owner of a US market VW Jetta (Bora) of the same platform, with a PD engine.
I really fell in love with the car but I wish it was a bit easier to find quality interior parts to fix it up. I've done a lot of fluid, mechanical and suspension maintenance and mechanically the car is extremely sound, and the body is in excellent shape in terms of rust, however everything that is plastic is gone in some way or another. That is what happens when you buy a car that lived 15 years of it's life in the middle of Florida.
I'm probably going to be 3 printing a lot of caps for the underbody and cleaning then repainting interior parts from a junkyard in order to clean up the inside.

I must admit I am missing the Mondeo but as admissions are on the table I did go and look at an identical Beetle 1.9 TDI 100 in the early 2000s at the local Dealer.
At the time I was running a 1.9 TD Citroën Xsara which was sensational. However, I was in love with the Volkswagen Beetle until the Salesman opened the boot. Sadly after seeing the boot and having two young children, my Wife and I didn't even bother the chap for a test drive.
Still love the Beetle though and my Sister recently got a 2004 Convertible 2.0 litre petrol one for her 40 th. Very jealous.

This is a great series, very enjoyable and entertaining.
I noticed the moldeo had the obligatory high idle speed, when you pulled up to the new owners house. My old 1.8 zetec escort GTi always had that issue, not difficult to fix though.
I don’t really like the beetle as a car for me, simply because it’s just not me, and with a family it’s not practical etc, but as a series to watch you “do up”, and move on, it’s brilliant.
On a profitable point of view, perhaps it wasn’t the best trade in, but it’s a UA-cam series, so you had to get rid of the moldeo really, and who knows, you may end up with an even more valuable car in the series in the near future 😁
Ps I’m very glad to hear you say that the wheel trims are horrible, get some nice alloys on it, or some nicer VW wheel trims 👍🏻

As others have said, it would be good to do a bit of a trade up series, I know it’s easier said than done but would be interesting to see what you could end up with 👌

One of my neighbours has a P reg Ford Escort in metallic purple which has been sat on his drive for at least the past 20 years. If I had the knowhow and facilities I'd have it off him as project. I also have a neighbour who works on classic cars and runs a Rover P4 in two tone green. Very nice.

That boost hose takes about 30 seconds to replace, flat blade screwdriver and flip the clips up at both ends and pull the pipe out.

I used to like these Beetles when they came out. I went to look at one to upgrade my aging polo but as a student who had to cart their life come every year, decided the boot was too small and came home with a Bora which was an saloon version of the golf mark 4 Ironic thing is the Mondeo would have been ideal with that boot.

Nice. Drop me a line if you need advice on the New Beetle, I've had over 20 of them.
First thing to do is check the sill ends (especially in front of the rear wheels) as they can rot badly, if they are good, waxoyl them ASAP.
    Peely interior plastics are common.
Boost pipe is a common issue, the tangs wear out and the pipe pops off. It's a 1.9tdi PD, not a 1.8.
With the steel wheels, you can retro them, buy some Aircooled VW Hubcaps and the clips and fit them to the steelies. Looks good.

    • @furiousdriving
      @furiousdriving  Рік тому +1

thanks, Ill be checking out the the under floor condition very carefully next week, and wheel trims are a priority!
Is that pipe on the top the one I need to change, or is it buried deep in the engine?

    • @Emberescan12
      @Emberescan12 Рік тому +1

@furiousdriving the floors don't tend to rot, it's generally the sills that go on them. The cars are fully galvanised, but behind the rear arch liners on top of the sills are a water/mud trap, plus where the lower wing mount bolts on underneath it breaks the underseal and they go there.
And no, it's the pipe on top that you pointed to thats the issue, it's a really rubbish design by VW that wears outs after a few thousand miles. I had to replace one on mine at 60k. You'll find it's got a fair bit more power once it's replaced.
Also the doors are possibly down to bad seam sealer on the door edges, we had one repaired under warranty at 2 years old because rust was forming on the door edges.

I've got a dead tidy 1997 Volvo 850 Wagon if you are interested! 2 litre, 5 cylinder 10 valve auto! It's on T5 Columba alloys, MOT has expired but it is well worth the effort as it is not the usual Battered/ shagged out old Volvo, Lovely half leather interior, O/S/F wing has the usual 850 wing rot but not too bad, Serviced annually with a rebuilt PCV system by me after i bought it, The ex-wife has used it for the last 4 years and it has never let her down, The Volvo is in Bideford North Devon and i will happily take £500 for it to get it out of the way. It's done about 100K miles so barely run in! Great for a reshell if anyone has an accident damaged 850 Wagon!

looks like the Mondeo has indeed gone to a good home .. one tip for seat-belts that are reluctant to retract , pull it out as far as it will go , spray the belt fabric with Mr Sheen & work it in & out a few times .. doesn't always work , but for free & 5 mins it's worth a try

No idea what Mr sheen contains but where I am at any kind of silicone lubricating spray will do the trick nicely. Well known trick that works well. Havent ever had it fail if the belts are cleaned of any potential extreme grime beforehand.

Watching this makes me miss my PD130 MK4 Golf. I've been thinking about getting another as a banger runaround. They do pull well these PD diesels. You should get 55mpg out of it regardless of how you drive it too, I regularly got 700 miles out of mine on a tank of diesel (55L tank)
