The sign of the cross is a Catholic tradition. There is a correct way to do the sign of the cross and specific reasons to do the sign of the cross. Father George answers all this and discusses the Catholic tradition in the sign of the cross. When do you make the sign of the cross. Is sign of the cross just for Catholics. Are there more Catholic hand motions. Do you use right or left hand for the sign of the cross. Do all Catholic rites use the sign of the cross.
***QUESTION of the DAY
How do you make the sign of the cross? - Розваги
By the sign of the cross, deliver us from all that is evil. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit
What's the Father's name?
Amen.❤!
@@peteyquillin893 O lord God❤
@@peteyquillin893 God is the father almighty ❤
Amen 🙏
The correct way to do the sign of the Cross is with a humble and contrite heart!
Open hand represents Christ's wounds. The three fingers represent the Holy Trinity. We in the western Church use the right hand because Christ sits at the right hand of The Father. They do the Sign of the Cross on the forehead, lips, and chest to remind us to keep Christ on our mind, on our words, and in our hearts.
So do I touch the lips at end?
@@eshow07 That's optional.
Beautiful description, blessings @JayRedding
Where is it commanded in the bible to do all this nonsense?
@@kylemagondu9276 First, the bible was put together at the council of Carthage in year AD 397 and it was so all churches were reading from the same books at the Litergy. The "nonsense" came 500 years ago when a guy made up the Bible Alone doctrine and now some people think Christianity is limited to just the bible, and people can interpret it how ever they like. And use out of context Scripture verses to justify their own beliefs.
Love that I am Catholic
Same!!! God Bless, Christa! 🙏
Me too. God bless all my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.
i know many catholics who represent jesus well, but the church is a mess.
Peace be with you
I know this is over a year ago, but may the Lord Our God keep you and bless you always! Thank you father! Sometimes stress and anxiety cloud my mind and this was the 1st video to pop up in my search. I don't want to offend Our Beloved Church or our Lord by doing it incorrectly during those times where my mind gets the best of me and I overthink; turns out I have been doing it correctly. (Heather Augustine, Harnett County, NC)
So glad this could help Heather! God Bless!
In Spanish:
"Por la Señal de la Santa Cruz (cruz en la frente)
de nuestros enemigos (cruz en la boca)
líbranos Señor Dios nuestro."
I'll try to translate it into English just for you, english speakers, to know - more or less - what we say when doing this (please, excuse my English, it's horrible!!!)
"By the Sign of the Holy Cross, (a little Cross in the forehead, as the father shows)
from our enemies (cross in the mouth)
save us our Lord" (cross in the chest)
And then the we do the Sign of the Cross...
I am very surprised, I thought people do the same everywhere. Is something we only do spaniards or spanish people? 😳 We do it always when we start praying the Rosary, for exemple, but not in the Holy Mass or entering the church. Thank you, father, it has been a curious video for me. And I will tell my catholic friends and family that not everybody do the same! Greetings and blessings from Spain! 🙏
[By the way, I find this particular - as I've learnt today - way of doing the Sign of the Cross as a kind of prayer, something like "Save me Lord of bad thoughts (cross in the forehead), bad words (mouth) and bad feelings (chest)"]
Thank you so much for the Spanish and English translation. I always liked how they did that special cross but I never knew how and specifically looked it up today to learn it. Thank you! 🙏🏼
We do it in Mexico
We do it in Brazil, even during mass, thought everyone did it
Thank you for reminding me of this way. I’m sorry I forgot this
We do it when entering the church. When starting to pray the Rosary, and when visiting The Holy Eucharist.
I’m Jewish but I grew up in Louisiana and I couldn’t remember if you did it from left to right or right to left.
Turns out I was just doing it wrong because I was using my left hand not my right.
Thank you very informative.
We do the Sign of The Cross With the 3 fingers because we praise the Holy Trinity ! ❤❤❤
(using the right hand - except if someone is not able to to his right hand due to any existing disability - if any)
New Orleanian here, it's right hand (3 fingers for Trinity) Up, Down, Left, Right. No one ever told me otherwise. lol
I am from Louisiana too where I did my conversion to the Catholic Church…..praise the Lord❤
Orthodox sign with the right hand but the right shoulder is touched first. Also it is common to sign with the thumb, index and middle finger together representing the Holy Trinity with the last fingers touching the palm representing the two distinct natures of Christ. I think the word you were searching for is “embellished”.
Thanks for the correction about which hand is used in the orthodox tradition. We've removed that section of the video. These questions are submitted live during the video, so I sometimes make mistakes. Thanks for your patience!
@@CatholicLink I’m happy to offer any knowledge I might have. Thank you for your work in making this. I can’t imagine that it’s an easy thing to do. God bless you
I saw a Russian person touching their right shoulder first and it made me question if I had been doing it right lol
we were taught the reason we touch the right shoulder first is because the meaning of it goes something like ''father in heaven (up), you came down to earth for us (down), place us on your right side (right) and not on your left (left).
We, Orthodox, use three united figures for the cross. They represent the Holy Trinity which is united. The remaining 2 closed figures represent the 2 natures of the Son (God and human).
We use the right hand, as the just will sit on the right side of the Father.
1. Forehead (God is blessed - Please remove any bad thoughts from your minds)
2. Abdomen (We acknowledge God's love who send the Son on earth through Virgin Mary - Please help us to do your will)
3. Right shoulder (We acknowledge that after Resurrection, Son went up to the sky)
4. Left shoulder (We acknowledge that Jesus is just and that the final judgement will happen).
Thank you for easy explanation. God bless. 🙌
Thank you Fr..God bless you.
Thank you again, Fr. George
Great video-thanks!
Ceremonial of Bishops, n. 108, footnote 81, describes the making the Sign of the Cross: “he holds the palm of the right hand turned toward himself, with all the fingers joined and held straight”. 1989 Liturgical Press translation.
Great video thank you!
Your very welcome! ❤️
In Hispanic culture we tend to embellish, or as it’s said in Puerto Rico, “enflorecer” or “flower it up” (make it beautiful), lot of things. This adds a lot to things that we do and at times it’s annoying, like with speeches. But when it comes to religion it’s usually a true thing of beauty. I learned everything in Spanish and although truly bilingual with no accent of either when speaking the other, when it came to attending mass I found it a struggle to attend the English mass service because I always felt that I had missed something! And the irony is that my catechism was taught by a priest who was from the Midwest who spoke mostly in English with me and not Spanish and had lived in Puerto Rico for so long that he had almost forgotten English! 😂
I like version in movie, "Die Hard With a Vengeance" where Bruce Willis tells Samuel Jackson, "North, South, East, West". Tom Hanks, "League of Their Own" with added point to the sky is also, great.
In catholicism it goes like this:forehead, chest, left and right shoulder
Right?
yess
Sign of cross is enriched with a partial indulgence
Thank you for the clarification. In the Hispanic culture, when we do the sign of the cross we finish by kissing our fingers. I think the Orthodox church uses the left hand instead of the right hand. That is what my mother used to say.
Thank you 👍🌎
btw, its not just in hispanic culture. i just saw a video of it called "The FULL version of the Sign of the Cross", and they do it the same way! i dont know what their nationality is, but to me they seemed south asian.
Thank you! :)
The five as you make the sign of the cross reflects the five wounds of Jesus Christ. If you make the sign of the cross, with 3 fingers, the thumb, point finger and middle stands for the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I learned this from some priests.😊
Excellent
I recommend saying: In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti AH-men
I was really hoping you would say which shoulder to touch in which order - just for clarity and completeness.
Place the left hand over your heart, then use your right hand to the forehead, then to the sternum, left shoulder, right shoulder. It's not difficult people. Was taught by the Dominican Sisters from Sininawa Wisconsin.
God and Jesus love you
You my friend explained it a bit more clear thank you I believe in the man but I just can't pull myself together to ask for forgiveness I know where I'm going and I'm very scared😢 and I know it's not right to mock the almighty God but I cannot let Jesus Christ pay for my sins even though he already has. I owe the bad things I've done I really don't think I deserve the white clouds and gold streets I've been thinking this for a while and I still think it is selfish for me to ask for forgiveness and even though I mean that I will change and live a righteous life I still believe that it is wrong that someone paid for my sins and I get to go to a good place😢😢😢 I know I feel happy when I feel holy presence makes me happy and even sometimes I cry a little but at least I get to enjoy a little holy things before I die internally😢😢
Grace of God, He did it for us. Love for us, think of a father doing something for his child.
The right Catholic "hispanic" way described here is: By the sign of the Holy Cross (while making the sign of the Cross over your forehead) Of our enemies (while making the sign of the Cross over your lips) Free us, Lord of ours (while making the sign of the cross over your heart), and finish the form with a "classic" sign of the Cross
Wait so do you touch the left or the right shoulder first ???
For Roman Catholics
Is Christianity go with the culture traditions or are there different branches and chapters? What is the difference between the original testament versus the new one?
The sign of the cross is placing all parts of our God on and in us, as a blessing prayer. Recalling that God is with us in totality of rationality; the Master of the Universe.
When you touch your head and then heart what shoulder should you touch first very confused
Which is correct to say the Sign of The Cross in Latin or English? I have been saying it in Latin a very long time.
"CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE, LORD GOD,
Please know that I forgive all trespasses against me, and I beg you to forgive me for all of my trespasses. Thank you for everything CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE, LORD GOD. Amen."
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Please pray these words now, if you can't look and remember them just pray them as you ready them
There are different directions with the horizontal points, that is, the left or right shoulder first. As I understand it, Catholics gi left shoulder to right, and others go right to left. I don't know if there is any reasoning behind this, or merely tradition.
In nómine Patris, et Fílii, et Spíritus Sancti. I was an alter boy and learned the Mass in Latin (Missam didicit latine) Yes I'm very old.
The hand to make the bottom of the cross further down the chest and the last part shoulders. Otherwise you are making an upside cross.
I have always done it forehead, left shoulder, right shoulder, left shoulder is this wrong? Its how i have been taught and I always thought it was to show the holy trinity.
Pope Francis described Canada's residential school system and its forced assimilation of Indigenous children as genocide. Brock Pitawanakwat, the co-ordinator of the Indigenous Studies program at York University, called the Pope's comments 'late,' but said they were an 'important development.'
Not with left hand in Christian Orthodox. Cross ourselves with right hand. Even wedding band goes on right hand.
Thanks for the correction about which hand is used in the orthodox tradition. We've removed that section of the video. These questions are submitted live during the video, so I sometimes make mistakes. Thanks for your patience!
Correct! With the 3 fingers because we praise the Holy Trinity ! ❤❤❤
Who cares. It’s made up by man and not needed.
Thank you idk why this made me emotional lol
Yes
Im planning on becoming Christian soon and was wondering who came up with this idea of signing a cross originally? And also, when you pray, why palms together and not like how Jesus is said to have prayed? (On hos knees with forehead on the floor)?
He did not pray like that. ua-cam.com/video/R_FFAWnAJS8/v-deo.html
I ask a Priest in our church about making a sign of The Cross the person their no right or wrong way to make it in Orthodox make it Right to Left
Make the sign however you think it brings you closest to the Lord
I fear that when moving your hand to the son. If you stop in the middle of the chest you are at risk of making the sign of the cross up side down.
Is this true and what is your thoughts on this?
No, what? Even IF that was the case(which it isn't), the inverted cross is a sign of St. Peter's martyrdom.
@krychstian7379 it's also a satanic symbol. Why risk it. Just do it the right way.
The end sign of the cross, isn't that before the gospel is read imitating the priest and saying "Glory to you Oh Lord"
In spanish they say,
Por la señal de la Santa Cruz, de nuestros enemigos. Líbranos, Señor, Dios nuestro,. En el nombre del Padre y del hijo y del Espíritu Santo, Amen.
I learned it using the thumb, index finger and middle finger touching eachothers tip which symbolizes the trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit)
Question: Why is it called the sign of the cross, but there are only 3 points? It almost seems like a triangular shape, no?
@@annesmith6582 in that case wouldn't a cross technically have 5 points?? which matches up with the 5 holy wounds too, no?
As a Jewish friend of mine often asks me if Jesus of Nazareth had been shot would we wear a gun around our neck and point pretending we had a gun during mass ?
It's good to know I've been doing it right all along. However, for some reason I had a brain fart today and that's why I looked it up on UA-cam lol
Where in the bible does it say or command you do that?
Where does the Bible say everything has to come from the Bible?
why the upside down cross?
"God is love." 1. John 4:16
That is the inner secret of the Trinity.
God became man [hand moving down] to gather us into his love [hand moving sideward], which is the Holy Spirit.
"God is love."
Love is not only what God is like, it is who he is.
Love only exists in communion, in relationship. Therefore, God by his very essence must be something like a relationship of love. The love between Father and Son. And since God is beyond our human intellect and reason, love can be what Christian theology calls the Third Person of the Trinity. The Holy Spirit. One in being/essence, three in person.
In our human experience, perfect love seems to manifest itself when we give to others willing the good of the other. It is truly unconditional. Unconditionally giving.
And here is God becoming man, living the perfect - sinless - life, taking all punishment upon himself and dying the most dreadful death one can possibly imagine sothat we might be saved. What more could one give - how could one give more unconditionally?
Love is who he is. In Thomas Aquinas' words, God is 'ipsum esse per se subsistens'. Being itself subsisting. The sheer act of being. Love.
That is what we see in the first books of the bible to our salvation in Jesus Christ.
From the God who gives by creating, from the burning bush which was not consumed by its flames of self-giving love, to Pentecost.
Then, "what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on their heads" - the Holy Spirit.
God is love. :)
I can highly recommend Bishop Barron's many videos on the Trinity and "The Love of the Trinity" by Fr. Brice Higginbotham here on UA-cam.
Correct! We do the Sign of The Cross With the 3 fingers because we praise the Holy Trinity ! ❤❤❤
Thank you for reminder that God is love from Genesis to Revelation, the Alpha and Omega, from the beginning to the end of time.
There is no evidence, so far as I know, about how the sign of the cross started, but but is certainly from the early Church. My own theory is that a surreptitious sign of the cross was a sign by which Christians knew each other in the times of persecution by the Romans. Nowadays, it is an overt sign to the world, and a reminder to oneself, that the cross was the gibbet on which our blessed Lord saved us.
Who invented the sign of the cross and why is it actually an upside down cross you’re making?
It actually appears to form an upside down cross when you do the sign of the cross.
It won't be up side down if you put your finger on belly button for the name of Son.
I wondered that too. But the Son would be our hearts not or stomach. I am wondering about this.
@@saylesacademy2216 If you know that Hebrew word for mercy: rachamin, and Hebrew word for womb/uterus: rechem are related, you will understand why belly button is the right position, not the chest, since belly button is the tool to connect with our mom via placenta when we are inside womb.
@@doomzstrafe2749 Heart is not in your throat. The heart is where most people point when making the sign of the cross, that makes it look like it is upside down.
@@doomzstrafe2749 🤣🤣🤣
Why does the sign of the cross look upside-down?
Exactly. Repent and trust in Jesus
How can you not say the prayer and just do the gesture? That doesn't add up...
Its best to say it with the prayer. That's what our Traditional Catholic priest say anyway.
Wow can't believe! You have to do the cross with your thumb and index finger to give God the reverence he deserves!

It's technically all 22 letters of Paleo Hebrew before Yiddish Hebrew.
My family would do the Spanish way, but I always did right to left not left to right.
One may not need to say the words out loud but one should think the silently at least .. Just making the motion is not showing devotion but becomes a meaningless gesture

Why do people kiss their thumb nail at the end of the sign of the cross ?
Why do Spanish kiss thier finger after the sign of the cross

I was in the market the day after Christmas and I saw this lady blocking my path. I said "excuse me." She did or refused not to hear. I said it the second time, and she refused to move. I said: "wake up it's Christmas!" She told me some fancy expletives so loud and enraged and I KNEW I was in the presence of evil. I made the sign of the cross over her and her face I kid you not tunred blood red! I knew evil was with her, and then I departed. No she never moved..... Maybe she needed Jesus in her life, and she was at the crossroads in the supermarket so to speak.
I saw a similar thing happen to a nun and she kindly asked the woman if she could help her find something...
Usually we cross our selves and not others, but this gets into spiritual warfare matters. We are instructed to cross ourselves and those under our authority such as our children and grandchildren etc. I believe. Look into it. 😊

Um ... thumb, index finger, middle finger together. Ring and little fingers laid against base of hand. Not every Catholic is under obligation to use Roman customs.
*In Roman times, if you were crucified, you are a criminal.* They would put the crucified in public display for days to embarrass and humiliate them.
That’s still happening today. The demonic powers are still displaying their victory over the guy that they had framed- Jesus on the cross.
That’s why Jesus’s body is still placed on the cross- it’s to embarrass and humiliate, and showcase their victory.
It’s a *Trophy*
1 Corinthians 1:23 New International Version
but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.
I guess St. Paul is wrong and we should believe you and your man made traditions.
That’s right cause Jesus thought us to do the sign in the book of worldly matters 1:13👍🤷♂️
The cross was/is a practice.of execution. It is not to be used as a sort of honor.
By the sign of the cross, by the lucky horseshoe, by the unlucky broken mirror, by the magic monkey's paw, by the power of the volcano-god, deliver us from bizarre religious superstitions.
The Orthodox ACTUALLY use their right hand. Would be prudent to pray respect to all churches of Christianity. I am an Anglican, but just wanted to put it out there, that we are all children of God! Besides, listening to advice from someone who uses (more than once) the phrase "or something like that" is definitely not wise.
Thanks for the correction about which hand is used in the orthodox tradition. We've removed that section of the video. These questions are submitted live during the video, so I sometimes make mistakes. Thanks for your patience!

The Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church have the same roots and core beliefs and traditions. In fact, these two were once one body of Christians and hopefully one day, will be in communion with each other. Anglicanism started when King Henry VIII split from the Roman Catholic Church in 1534, when the pope refused to grant the king an annulment. In short, apostasy due to self-interest and utter disobedience. Only the Roman Catholic Church and Orthodox Church are true Christian Churches. All else are fake, protestants, or results of self-interpretation of the Bible. Only the Roman Catholic Church and Orthodox Church are authentic, apostolic, and has roots tracing back to Jesus Christ - the true and only founder. No offense meant to other "Christian" churches but only stating historical facts.
I really doubt that God gives a rap about this.
it is funny how the cross that is made with the thumb and forefinger is similar to the number of the beast 666 sign that many celebrities like to make with their hand.
A few nights ago as I was trying to go to sleep I saw a vision of an eye embossed on what looked to be a metal disk, the eye I saw looked like those Egyptian eyes. It was one eye on a round disk that emerged out of the darkness and grew bigger as it approached closer to me. It kept growing bigger and then vanished when it got close to me. Then right after that Jesus Christ my LORD and Saviour said "Catholic."
What do you make of this vision and what the LORD said to me???
My opinion on the sign of the cross:
The sign has no biblical significance, I do not understand where it comes from or what it truly means and I recently learnt that the LORD Jesus did not actually get crucified on a cross but rather on a stake/tree. I do not know where the cross came from or how it came into Christianity and I do not understand the Catholic church also and what they actually stand for.
If you pay attention to the motion it’s an upside down cross.
@@enuar8807 WOW what an observation!!! This is so true, I had to watch it again to see what you mean - the Catholic Church is actually disgusting, they do NOT worship the Living GOD Jehovah and Christ Jesus!

No he isn't. Get real. Top of the cross. Bottom of the cross. Left side, right side.
good grief! so now are you going to hell?
WHERE IN THE BUBLE SAYS THAT? If it is not the written word of God it’s all manufactured and therefore bullshit
REALLY 🤔?
When making the sign of the cross, no words are necessary. This man, if he is a R.Catholic priest, should return to the seminary and learn/understand what the hand gestures are about. How very disappointing to appear on a utube general public video and show such ignorance😏.
Making the “sign of the Cross” won’t hurt anything but it won’t help either. God examines our Hearts, not how we cross them.
Did Jesus perform the nomina sacra? No, no He did not. He was not Catholic, nor are His people.
thats an upsidedown cross. no thanks
Upside down Cross = St. Peter's Cross
Upside down cross 🚫
That is blasphemy and an abomination. The cross was a place of death where our Lord Jesus Christ paid for all our sins.Acknowledge the work done and believe and receive Him as your Lord and personal savior.Shalom
How is this a blasphemy. And as Catholics we acknowledge what Jesus did on the cross and accept him as our Lord and Savior always. Stop being an ignoramus.
