- By genuflecting before the tabernacle at church, we’re saying at least one of three things with our bodies. Those three things have to do with humility, service, and love. In this video, Fr. Mike Schmitz explains how a simple kneel before we enter the pew can express so much.

Hi Mike, and thanks for that interesting explanation of genuflecting and bowing which is traditionally done before and after mass. What was totally unexpected by me was how you delivered your explanation with comic relief. Although this is a very serious thing---and I take my relationship with Jesus oh so seriously because I love him with all of my heart---you had me literally cracking up. I've been away from the Catholic Church for decades and genuflecting as well as that gesture parishioners make before the reading of the gospels during mass was never explained to me. Even if it was I have always had ADD and a learning disability so I never retained it. Now, since I'm returning to the Catholic Church after exploring my own spiritual path my own way there is this passion in my heart and this space I've created which has begun to see all of the richness within The Catholic Church. I feel a little overwhelmed at all of things one can attempt to understand about the church but I'll be taking it one step at a time. Thank you, again, Father Mike, my brother and someone who can make me laugh which isn't very easy to do. God Bless.

12yr Catholic, We Genuflect every time we are in front of the alter, I also cry at communion Every single time.
Properly speaking, we Catholics genuflect only to the tabernacle, where Jesus resides (and some people genuflect before receiving the Host, and on a couple of days a year we all genuflect at the lines in the Nicene Creed about the Incarnation). The altar, which is merely a symbol of Jesus, is for bowing only. But of course in a lot of churches the tabernacle is behind the altar, so there’s that. God bless.

I have never before heard a connection between genuflection at Mass and the genuflection of a man before his potential bride. Very good point. The intensity of devotion should be the same. I think this point illustrates part of why marriage is a sacrament, a physical touching point for a spiritual reality. Good video!
Great videos, Fr. Mike! Another reason we may seem to “trip” rather than fully genuflect knee-to-the-floor might be because some of us have old knee injuries coupled with arthritis. I know I do, and am unable to dip all the way to the floor. But if I could, I would, most certainly. Thanks for the great videos! God bless you!

I'm a new convert (this past Easter Vigil), and the RCIA was led by our two priests - and one of them described it exactly as you say. Now, why do priests always seem to say "Boom! I think you are the first person to actually address the half kneel/curtsy/trip/lunge thing. I don't want to genuflect half-heartedly before the king of kings, I want it to be a sign of my love and fidelity towards him. :) Btw, I laughed out loud at the end...

super cool fun fact! In olden times, a knight would kneel on his left knee so he could draw his sword without, ya know, chopping his leg off (assuming he is right-handed). However, when we genuflect in front of the eucharist, we genuflect on our right knee, again displaying that self-sacrificing love Father talks about in this video. It is as if we are saying, "I am all yours and am willing to give my whole self to serve you." I just think that is so incredibly beautiful.
It has been said that Satan cannot genuflect, or humble himself before God. (serpents don't have knees).

There’s actually a common misconception about Satan that he doesn’t serve God. In the book of Job, one of the few places he is mentioned in the Bible, he asks God permission before testing Job. Satan is one of God’s angels, so he serves God, but he is responsible for testing our faiths.

Genuflect. Father Mike when I do this it's so very simple. Plus body laungage. Look too the Tabernacle...then genuflect one knee on the floor and in my mind/body I say; "My Lord and my God." That simple...it really is now.

My knees are really bad so I have to be careful. I know that sounds ridiculous. But I try to do what I can. It's awesome that Jesus is everywhere as well as in the tabernacle. He's awesome, and he died for all of our sin.

Yes J.R.R Tolkien, the guy who wrote the books, was a devote Catholic. He subtly uses analogies to God and the Angels in his books.

Fun fact: in the past, when nobility and monarchs were much more common, it was the custom to genuflect on your left knee before them, as opposed to the right knee in the case of the clergy and God himself.
I trip and fall alot so when my friend first saw me genuiflect they were concerned that I had been trying to stop myself falling

Dear Father Mike, I always thought genuflecting meant that we are paying respect to Jesus falling as in the stations of the cross. I dont know where I got that from but thats what I think every time I genuflect. Im thinking of and feeling all the agony, humiliation, and fear Jesus endured for us. When I take the physical position, I think of that Stations of the Cross, in a frozen, enlarged moment.

I've been curious about this for a long time. A handful of times in my life I've seen people -- Catholics, must be, maybe Orthodox -- kneeling abruptly when entering a building with a large crucifix. I was startled to see it and startled to see the large Cruxifix. I realized it was a Catholic building where a rummage sale was being held. Anyway, my grandparents told me later that was bowing down to idols. I'm sure the Catholics and Orthodox see it differently, but I could never figure out how such a thing could occur given biblical requests to not bow down before idols... I listen to videos like this to help me make sense of things.

Why are Protestants against the bowing and kneeling actions of Catholics during mass? Is there any basis for their argument?
It's not that they don't believe in it. They just don't do it, since they don't have the need to. Their services/celebrations/whatever don't involve the Transubstantion, since they don't believe in it.

I have a friend who genuflects again at the pew after receiving the Eucharist, I know there's nothing inherently wrong, just curious why that's not "technically" needed (kneeded 🤣)
I’m Presbyterian and my partner is Catholic. I went to church with him once and Oh My. There a lot of standing, Sitting, Bowing, Knealing,, More standing, Knealing, Sitting, Knealing, Bowing 🙇. He wants me to go again, I said well I like to go to church to Worship not to Workout 🏋️♂️. Watching all that made me exhausted 😴
I understand your reaction. If you really want to know the reason why we stand, sit, and kneel , read the book A Biblical Walk Through the Mass by Edward Sri. Our postures matter. Kneeling is for the most reverent parts of the Mass. It is a sign of humility . Sitting is for "receiving". Standing is for praising and praying. There is so much beauty and richness in the Mass. Perhaps you and your boyfriend can read the book together or watch some UA-cam videos on the Mass. Learning about the Mass together could enrich your relationship. 🙏

What I see and hear is one of His own on fire...transparent flame of His Sacred Priesthood.
This is just another Catholic tradition that has no relevance to anything. And the Eucharist is NOT Jesus, it is a symbol. Jesus did not eat His flesh and blood at the last supper. Jesus said on the cross ‘it is finished’. To say the Eucharist IS Jesus is plain blasphemy.
Matt Blaise I have responded to another comment you made on another video but also, we don’t need to go to other writings, we only need to read what is in the bible. The American Gospel that I recommended watching is a helpful way to understand that the RCC is a works based religion meaning, it believes that it is Christ plus what you do, that saves you, however that totally contradicts what Paul says in the New Testament. ✝️

It is so important, like many other traditions, and people have no idea what to do! Unfortunately, a long spand of time has passed and no one has educated individuals. There are many different things that my mother taught me when I was a little girl that I never heard as an adult. I have been telling my praise that the way to get people to get more involved in the church is to explain to them once again why we do the things we do. When you said "No longer going through the motions, it is doing the motions with meaning." This is what I'm trying to do I'm my life, with mass, with the rosary with prayer. I hope that you are inspired to do more videos like this. I'd like to see something that goes through the mass from beginning to end identifying things that should be done as well as things that should not be done (I've seen very inconsistent and inaccurate things done) at each point in time and why we do them. My goal for mass, in particular, is a more meaningful, complete, and accurate participation in the mass. Thanks Again. God Bless

At the start you mentioned the difference between genuflection and bowing based on the presence of the tabernacle. What is the appropriate action if the tabernacle is present but not physically visible from your vantage point?

So, if there's not a tabernacle inside the church, and mass is not happening at the moment, when entering this church, we'd just bow?

I have never noticed Catholics in Mexico genuflect, and boy is Mexico a Catholic country! I did notice so when I went to Mass in Canada, and it caught my eye as something new to me. Could it be a cultural thing? I'm not a Catholic yet, God-willing I'll start RCIA classes next year; maybe I haven't noticed them genuflect and they do? I'll have to ask.

I want to make sure I am doing the right thing, here, and ALWAYS with the right meaning behind the action. When I was growing up, my religion teacher told us we genuflect before and after mass toward the altar, as a way of addressing the Lord and saying a sort of hello and goodbye to Him, like an acknowledgement, respect and awareness for His presence before us. Therefor, I always would face (what I thought was) the altar, genuflect and look at the big crucifix up there, always, when I did this. I’m a bit confused now based on your explanation in the very beginning about whether one should genuflect or bow before an altar or Tabernacle. After your explanation, I’m not sure I ever even really knew what an Altar actually was! Also, I most certainly knew nothing of a Tabernacle. Either I was never taught about that or my ADD was kicked into high gear that day when it was. I always thought the Altar of a church was just the raised platform in the front of the church where the ceremony was performed, you know, basically just the whole front of the church that was raised up higher than where the rest of us congregants sat in our pews. Am I right in now assuming I am wrong here? Would you, Father Mike, or anyone else, please be kind enough to enlighten me? What, actually, is an Altar?What is a Tabernacle? Genuflecting in church is encouraged yet genuflecting before the US flag is considered by many an act of treason.....go figure In either case its just a posture. Whether I stand, kneel or prostrate, all are acceptable before God. But it isnt really the posture of our bodies but its really the "posture of humility" of our hearts and minds that truly matters to God

My understanding Showing respect to God . Like in the Old Testament everyone will bow down to a king . Jesus is more than just a king he is God that's the way we shall we expect for him Because when you bow down to the Holy communion that is God.
When I was in seminary we used to genuflect towards the closet. This was because the seminary used illicit communion bread. It was very crumbly. Well, the vacuum was in the closet and we knew Jesus was in there. I still look at vacuum cleaners in a very suspect way. Our hearts were in the right place.
Thank you Fr. Mike Schmitz! I completely understand and agree with the three reason why we genuflect to the Tabernacle. Why don't we shouldn't we show as much (or more) love, submission and respect to Christ when we receive the Eucharist and kneel?
