It doesn't look too hard....I'm seriously considering learning this instrument. I don't play any instrument I have cero experience with instruments...however is never late to learn something new. I'm intrigued by the Oud...the sound is magical and a little sad, it's beautiful. I'm ordering a OUD tomorrow ;)
Man, I genuinely feel like I want a hobby and couldn't get Oud out of my head for weeks now. 29, ZERO musical experience but really need something to do other than work and home, to be honest. Don't even plan on going anywhere with it, just something fun to learn.
Learning an instrument is excellent for keeping your mind active and focused. From about eight years old on, my parents ensured we’d keep out of mischief by involving us in sports, learning an instrument, and school. Plenty of homework and practice😉
i find that on an oud, the only way for intonation to get strong: just tune one of the notes to a tuner. then tune strings a fourth apart with harmonics on "fret 5" on lower, and "fret 7" on higher. When you tune by harmonics, it is much easier to hear when intervals are exactly right between two strings. ie: I tune like this, because this was my first oud tuning: d g A D G C. But D is tuned to an electronic tuner. But then: tune G relative to D with harmonics by ear. Tune C relative to G by harmonics by ear. Then check it by verifying that fifths ("power chord") are exactly right. When you have DGC tuned, then verify that an octave above D on C string sounds exactly right. If you tune all the strings to a guitar tuner, the finger locations stop being consistent. When tuned to harmonics, the instrument sounds much much richer. The harmonics give great guides as to where to listen for the right notes. If you tune it to a guitar tuner, it doesn't really sound right; not like an oud; and it's hard to listen for harmonics that give you the right note. For exercise, I play melodies on the G string, with open D string ringing through. The chord between the two strings will lock tight when you get it right; and the beating goes away.
Hi there. I just got an oud for my birthday and Im trying to learn. I notice sometimes you dont play both pairs of each string all the time. Should I play both strings of the pair on the downstroke and only a single string on the upstroke? Thanks for these videos! :)
@@TheBlendedTech It's confusing to describe in words. There are two strings tuned to the same note. When you do a down stroke or an up stroke the pair is stroked in unison as if it was one string. The pair should be played together. I hope that makes sense.
@@OudforGuitarists okay thanks a lot for your reply! My confusion stems from 16:29 in this video where it appears you play a single G string (the bottom one) and not the pair together on the upstroke.
Hey Navid, wish I could have joined but it was very early in Cairo. What was being played at the beginning of the video? It was beautiful. Hope you are doing well.
hello, i started learning oud following your tutorials and lessons , almost 3 weeks ago , i am getting ever since pain and sourness in my shoulder , is this expected with begginers ?thanx
It is expected with any activity where you have to repeat the same movement over and over. Everyone is different, some people have pain in the wrist, some have pain in the back. You need to stretch your shoulders and try to relax when you practice.
I am 84 yrs of age from Palastine and live the USA

It's definitely learnable. Learning anything requires some patience and the right instructions. There's nothing stopping. Let me know how it goes.

Exactly, thanks for elaborating on this point.
Thanks for the efforts you put on this listen, would you also show us the same on left hand, as I have problem to use left hand.
oud is iranian instrument but developed by bioth arabs and iranian muqams names are persian names like nahavand is a city in iran

You must play the pairs as though they are a single string.
@@OudforGuitarists So you never play them together? Even in Oud songs ? How do you know which of the individual strings to play

@@TheBlendedTech yes I see what you mean. The upstroke is going to be weaker 90% of the time, but the goal is to hit both strings.
How do you get the oud to stop sliding down my leg so the front is pointing up?
Get your leg up with a foot stool or cross your legs. Whatever is comfortable.
❤❤❤
Can I join one of your classes please.
Kind regards,
David
I can't imagine why not... Which class are you interested in?

Navid
I really want to learn this instrument but I need someone to help me .Is there there any way to get all the lessons for beginners? Thanks
Or where to go for lessons?
Can you use a guitar pick instead of the Risha?
No. You'll never get the sound you're looking for.
It's almost like slapping a bass string the way Risha hits the strings

Only you would know the answer to this lol but what strings does Simon Shaheen use?
He uses different strings for different Ouds. I think most of the time he uses custom singles from la Bella or pyramid.
Depending on the Oud height use a slightly different gauge than on another one.
@@OudforGuitarists Thank you!
