Some times while tuning people may not think about the direction but the tention on the tunning peg is better if you tune up to a note and not down to a note. Same with the guitar, and I'm sure any string insrament, the instrament should stay in tune longer when tunning up to the note. Just wanted to high light that thought. Thanks!

when I tune two notes C and G then begin tuning the third set of string, the C and G go out of tune. I think it has to do with how the oud is stringed. Do you have a video on how best to string the oud and avoid the strings hitting each other? Thank you!

You need to first determine what string set you have on this oud. There are mainly two tunings FADcgf and what I use CFADgc, the first has a higher range and the second has a lower range. If you have 3 pairs of nylons strings for 1st string 2nd and 3rd string then it's likely you have a FADgcf set on there.

I'm looking at a picture of Alice strings packaging and from what I know about oud string gauges nothing really adds up. AOD11 set has a .025 inch diameter for the A string but AOD12 has a .033 inch... Also, there is only one player in history who tuned his 1st string as high as g. He was Jamil Bashir and nobody seriously uses that tuning anymore. The only thing I can imagine to make sense of their gauges and note naming convention is they are for Turkish oud. On sheet music G corresponds to the 1st string(closest to the ground) in the most common tuning convention used on Turkish ouds. They write G but the absolute pitch of the string is actually D4. So I'm not sure. The easiest way to tell is to tell me which pairs of strings are plain nylons and which ones are wound nylons? Since I have never used Alice strings, I can't give you definite answer. In another video of yours I saw you explaining the distance between the string nut and bridge determining between a syrian and arabic oud. I checked mine and it is 62.5 cm - would this be considered an Arabic Oud? Excellent content though, I will be making a video today for an exotic instrument series based on some exotic fretless instruments and will give you page a shoutout.

Nikolaos Giolas sure, you can do anything you want. but it will be confusing when you are trying to learn.but fine if you want to do your own thing. If you want to use guitar tuning, use an oud with high f tuning or change to a high f string set. FADgcf, as you can see you only need to change the tuning of three strings. good luck.

For us westerners, the interval of a fourth is the same as the first two notes of the Wedding March, or of the kid's song "A-hunting we will go". Of course, the lower note comes first in both those songs. YMMV

Skull Teck To be exact, it is OUD for Guitarists... It teaches Oud to Guitarists, or anybody with some western musical background. These programs are designed with the western people in mind... how to approach Oud from their perspective. I see a lot of guitar players want to learn Oud.
It's similar to the modern Turkish tuning which tunes the Oud in all 4ths. It's a valid tuning in my opinion. The basis of Oud technique is tuning in 4ths. The ancient Oud started out with 4 main courses ADGC, now we are just adding more.
Basim Daoud the only problem you will have is too much tension on the neck. I also tune in 4ths BEADGC. This is for an Arabic oud. You can go one tone higher on a Turkish oud.

The size of that oud makes it a beast of an Arabic Oud. Very cool. The largest I've heard of is 63 cm bridge to nut.

If the tuner didn't come with instructions then I would recommend tuner.ninja/ or download a free chromatic tuner for your smartphone.

Yes, great point. Using well known tunes to queue how something is supposed to sound and get the interval relationship in your ear.

D GG would make it like Arabic tuning, but one note higher. Yes, many Arab players use this tuning but tuning CFADgc, instead of DGBEad.
