The E was the most beautiful and badass Enterprise. I wish we could have seen more of her. When I went into cinema in 1996 to see this movie I was blown away by how cool it was. And I still am. Best looking starfleet vessel ever.

Actually. Starfleet followed suit with every first ship of the class is named after the class, therefore, there was a USS Sovereign before the Enterprise E was even launched.

    •  3 роки тому +21

Beta-canon coming up, subject to rewrite by the series and movies:
The Sovereign was the hero ship in the second half of the Bridge Commander video game (still the best Trek game IMO) after the Galaxy-class Dauntless (NCC-17879) got destroyed. The Sovereign's registry number in that game was NCC-73811 (and NX-90201 before the class went into production).
Beta canon also claims that the Enterprise-E was originally supposed to be the USS Honorius.

From what I know from Beta Canon, the first of any new ship class is a "test bed" for the class. Thus the Constitution was an NX class during test phases. When the new class gets an okay, it's somewhat of a tradition to "retire" the prototype, give it an active NCC number & use new names for all future ships of the line.
The exceptions in "real" canon are Excelsior (test bed for a new type of warp signature & pseudo battle cruiser. Refitted w/a "corrected" faster & more efficient warp engine system, then given an NCC classification under its prototype name), Defiant (Defiant was a test bed for an anti-Borg "Fast Attack" ship, but defaults kept it from being qualified for use. They were later fixed & sent to DS9 as a perimeter defense ship).

I always assumed that Enterprise-E was leading one of the Starfleet fleets in the Dominion War, likely under Picard's direct command. There are not many officers in any navy of the caliber of Picard and Sisko. Putting them in the same place would be inefficient. So Picard was elsewhere, doing his thing. But it would have been nice to get a mention at least. And having the -E in the "welcome home" fleet would have made PERFECT sense, as Picard is the number-one Borg killer in Starfleet. But how do you put Enterprise there and not the crew? Potentially upstaging the main series actors? They did do something like this in the Star Trek: Enterprise finale and it bombed. So maybe it was a good move after all. :)

My friend was who helped them convert the Enterprise (and other ships later) into CGI. They brought the physical models (yes models plural) to London to show him (and his team) what they needed. There is a full model but there are also other models of parts of the ship for close up camera work, they took up almost all of the floor space of his company. The issue was that none of the models were to a standard scale, so when he made the 1st CGI model he did it to exacting standards of the main model which when you did a close up meant details were too large. Now he knew this was a problem before he sent the model but they insisted that it was a single CGI model that they were going to work from. It took months of going back and forth before they accepted the model (it may have been more than one model, but because of the security he doesn't even know). I was fortunate enough to see the original models (and the crazy security they surrounded them with) also much of the work that he did the vast majority of by himself.

Definitely the most elegant design from modern Trek.
I thought I read something in beta cannon about how the E was deliberately kept away from the Dominion War, but in reality the film production people didn’t want DS9 to have any Sovereign class ship on it, in case it got blown up... even though DS9 was so kind to loan them the Defiant (which, as you mentioned, the film people wanted to blow up).

    • @hisokamorow1816

Narratively, it was the most convenient to have worf come in the Defiant because they needed him in the movie and it was established that the defiant was built to fight borg, so it would be silly to not have it at the big borg fight.

It's "beta-canon", but the Enterprise-E was at Earth during the Breen attack in DS9. There is a collection of short stories called "The Dominion War" and the "E" helped repel the invading Breen. According to another novel that was in that big TNG/post Voyager Borg series, the Enterprise-E was in the fleet that intercepted Voyager after they destroyed the Borg sphere. We just didn't see it.

The Enterprise-E remains my all-time favourite ship. I love the way it looks, both inside and out. I totally agree that it would've been cool to have either the Enterprise or another Sovereign-Class ship show up in either DS9 or Voyager (especially with the aforementioned episodes with Troi and Barclay, which even mentioned the Enterprise several times!). I never knew that shot with Troi on the screen was actually on part of an Enterprise-E set. I'm sure I read somewhere that the Prometheus and Equinox Bridge sets used elements of the Enterprise-E Bridge set, possibly the side consoles. Plus, obviously the Valdore Romulan Warbird Bridge in "Nemesis" was a redress of the Enterprise-E Bridge set too.

  • @ianfinnigan264

My headcannon is that in the Dominion war they were keeping the enterprise in reserve as a last defense in case things got too bad. They didn't want to risk losing such an advanced ship that could be their only defense later on down the line. I don't know if that makes any sense though, I haven't watched DS9 in a while

In one of the TNG relaunch books (Resistance I believe) they had a chapter with the Enterprise-E separating it's saucer and stardrive section. As far as I know it's the first and only time saucer separation has been mentioned as something the Enterprise-E can do.

Depending on the Stage Bridge commander is modded, you even get to play the Sovereign in two states(as NX and NCC)
NX Sovereign for example has the same deflector dish design, except blue, blue impuls engines, and more orange Bussard collectors
(it would not make much sense timeline whise that the sovereign is still an NX at that point, unless it was used for technology testing)
NCC Sovereign, again, depending on mods,is either a slightly less dark painted Nemesis version,or the Insurrection one..Either way,its far better armed than the NX Sovereign

My theory about the decks is that in order to encourage more superstitious cultures to join Starfleet, they number their decks to skip what they consider to be unlucky numbers, like how old skyscrapers didn’t have a 13th floor. That’s how we can have a deck 26 on a ship with only 24 decks.

I'm loving this series so far! It'd be great to see more based on some of the additional ships that only have a limited presence, or only show up for a limited number of a show's episodes. Or you could potentially combine two or three ships into one episode, if there's only a small amount of information available? Personally, two potential ships I'd love to see the secrets of, would be:
    - The USS Equinox - from that Voyager two-parter of the same name - which had so much detail but didn't feel fully explored on-screen. It was a fascinating little ship, with a design that seemed to take a bit of influence from the Enterprise-E, whilst still being smaller than Voyager (probably a little over half the size, based on the shots of the two ships together).
    - The USS Prometheus - from the Voyager episode Message in a Bottle - it gets even less screen-time but was a fascinating prototype ship. It had a lot of fascinating concepts - like the ability to split into three ships, allowing it to then dominate over any attacking ship.

Great video! Now, apologies If someone else has pointed this out already, but the Enterprise D was not portrayed by the same studio model for the entire run of the series. There were originally two models, one six feet long and one two feet long. But an intermediate sized four foot model was built during season 3. It had greater surface detail, and was easier to work with than the massive six foot model. It also incorporated several small design tweaks, including a new row of windows on the leading edge of the saucer to indicate the location of Ten Forward.

The random uniform change midway through DS9 to account for the new look in First Contact always threw me. But it was nice that when they showed the real Julian and the on the station was an impostor, the real one still had the old uniform style on to show he'd been there a while. Why DID they change their uniforms, anyway?

It was according to the RPG basically they started to design the Sovereign class shortly after the Dominion destroyed a Galaxy Class. Not to mention I think its mentioned in the background somewhere that the Enterprise E was originally called the USS Sentinel, but was renamed after the Enterprise D was destroyed. Its not like Starfleet doesn't do this on the regular anyway - they did it with the Enterprise A (originally the Yorktown or the Ti-Ho, depending on sources) and Defiant (Sao Paulo, though oddly the Defiant A isn't ever referenced as that, and weirdly should be the Defiant B in any case since there was a USS Defiant Constitution...).Ent

@@chrissonofpear1384 Actually I may have made a small mistake, I'll dig out the rule book to check. I did they actually started work on the design of the ship the year before they discovered the Bajorian Wormhole, it was started as a Deep Space Exploration Vessel better able to handle deep space threats such as the Borg, so it's more a kin to the Defiant and the Akira Class.
Which actually when you think about it makes sense, three classes of Ship in different Weight Classes, the Defiant a heavy Gun ship, likely stationed at a Space Station in peacetime like we see it on the show, heavy fire power but not built for long deployments.
The Akira a heavier Patrol ship able to handle Months out in space. Then the Sovereign A Deep Space Exploration Ship, able to go years away from Port, if need be, and packing enough firepower to handle threats like the Borg at least long enough to get away.
Through in my defence it is likely they gave it a greater priority after the Dominion Encounter. As we did see that Star Fleet had started to back away from the new ships it had designed when the Borg didn't come back after Wolf.

The master design for the Sovereign class was for the bridge to be above Deck 1, therefore creating 24 decks. Later advances and a refit after the Sovereign was built let the Enterprise have 26 decks, although only 24 were usable (Geordi mentions that the big E has been in space for a year), probably due to errors identified in the shakedown process. (This could be seen by Picard's lack of reaction when Crusher asks if more shakedown time is needed.) After FC, a refit lower hull allowed for new warp nacelles as well as new decks.
In addition, Riker (and Worf) do NOT fight the Remans on Deck 29. They head to Deck 29, but meet the Remans halfway, somewhere around Decks 13-16. This is why Vkruk was able to fall several decks to his death. Unfortunately the dialogue doesn't make this clear, however this is the logical answer to this problem.
BTW, would you like me to fact check you for future Star Trek videos? I've only been a fan for the last 32 years with every episode in my collection as well as committed to memory.

I haven't researched the validity but as I know there were rules to design a ship. One of them was that the pylons had to be in direct line of sight. So the "moving up and down" of Voyager was to NOT break that rule. Meaning that for warp they have to be in direct line of sight but when using impulse, they could pay them flat. (Btw. the Defiant's "Pylons" were actually in direct line of sight. Just to get ahead of some comments about defiant breaking those design rules)

    • @AT2Productions
      @AT2Productions 3 роки тому

The other reason given, which is a call-back to a TNG episode, is that the Intrepid-class of starship was designed with variable geometry nacelle pylons due to the damage higher warp velocities were doing to subspace in many regions. This geometry change was said to affect the warp field/bubble shape, ergo affecting the stresses place upon the region of subspace being interacted with during FTL travel.

When the camera follows beside the Diver into the water. The angle of the shot (in Nemesis) seems to show off the ventral side of the Enterprise and make the Warp Nacelles appear longer.

    8. The Decks…
Starfleet has had a long running collaboration with *Gallifrey,* and the *Time Lords* occasionally retrofit Federation ships (as a minor refit) with _relative dimension_ technology - it's how Voyager was able to carry so many shuttles and other ships in its hanger, some that couldn't even fit through the doors.
So obviously the number of decks is _reconfigurable,_ like with the TARDIS.

Ron Moore's explanation that the E was in design and construction for years makes the most sense. They were working on a ship that would've been called who-knows-what, but they HAVE to have an Enterprise in service -- it's tradition at this point. So the D crashes in the most anticlimactic movie ending ever, this baby's almost ready for launch, and Starfleet said "meh, slap an Enterprise sticker on it and let's roll."

#7 I think, under special circumstances, plans do change. So it is possible they were already building the new sovereign class ship, then just named it the enterprise when it was complete.
An example from Stargate. They were building a new ship named the Phoenix (as detailed in an alternate timeline episode near the end of Stargate Atlantis), but when (The actor who played) General Hammond died, (followed up on in Stargate Universe) they renamed the ship to the General Hammond.

So fun fact for all my fellow Trek gamers. The USS Sovereign does make an appearance. In Bridge Commander you start out on the galaxy class ship Dauntless, and your crew does so well that when Star fleet begins to rearm, the name sake and early prototype the USS Sovereign is pulled out of mothballs and overhauled with all the updates that others of it's class like the Enterprise E got. Apparently the ship was slightly rushed out of the dockyards as a design that's why the E was on a full year shake down.

Only thing also new was the shuttle bay area, the repeating numbers of the turbo lift, brige, and officers lounge. They were only used for those scenes. They borrowed sets from the Enterprise D for the Enterprise A such as the corridors, transport room, and medical bay
