    The Enterprise F decommissioning in Picard was very awkward. You can tell it was an afterthought and was originally supposed to be commissioned, not decommissioned. They got it out of the way to make way for the ugly Titan. No decommissioned ship flies out of space dock in a big reveal.

    • @Thrillhou
      @Thrillhou Рік тому +27

      Yep! No idea why they went with that TOS fusion aesthetic, when we had the Odyssey class so well established in beta Canon and the Luna class titan working so well, even in Lower Decks.
      The whole art direction in Picard's second and third season, in terms of LCARS, phasers, ships, etc., was just awful. (I really enjoyed the third season, but it was such a misfire design-wise).

    • @GuitarsnCars
      @GuitarsnCars Рік тому +11

      Agreed! Don’t know about you but I just don’t get how or why ( in cannon) it would be necessary to decommission the F rather than change out a few systems! Plenty of examples of major overhauls having taken place and not resulting in scrapping the ship. I mean, what a waste!

    • @jcohasset23
      @jcohasset23 Рік тому +13

      @@GuitarsnCars Agreed. It really feels like "what was the point" of introducing F just to decommission it after only 13 years of service. The original, B, C, and D were all destroyed/lost at various points of service with A being the only Enterprise decommissioned until E and F (not including the NX version) and it was largely decommissioned due to the Khitomer Accords. These ships are designed with a long lifespan- heck the US Navy's most recent carrier Enterprise was just retired a few years ago after 50 years of service and I'm sure it was given several overhauls over the years. Instead of bringing back a rebuilt version of the D varient S3 of Picard should have put the focus on the E and retired it at the end of the series, and use that as the introduction of the F.

    • @QuintusAntonious
      @QuintusAntonious Рік тому +20

      What makes it even stranger is that all they had to do was change a few lines of dialogue to make it less awkward. I'm not sure why they were insistent on the Titan-A becoming the Enterprise-G. It didn't really add much to the story and making it the USS Picard or something like that would have arguably been even more impactful.

    • @CandleLight129
      @CandleLight129 Рік тому +10

      @@QuintusAntonious Making the neo constitution a refit (or rebuild really) of the Titan didn't even make sense other than to give Riker some added tension with Shaw and give audiences a familiar name to trigger the feel good nostalgia chemicals. Someone behind the scenes clearly wanted a return to a more classic look even though it didn't fit with the way Starfleet design had been evolving and would continue to evolve. The Titan was a way sexier ship than the Titan-A and then turning it into the Enterprise-G just felt like cheap attempt at making the season's hero ship feel more important. Definitely wish they had kept and focused more on the Enterprise-F as well as the original Luna class Titan.

    Some corrections, notes, and other fun facts:
    10:36 states that the Odyssey class has 32 decks, but according to an MSD render of the Enterprise-F recently released by Cryptic Studios, which was done my artist Tim Davies, it actually has 45 decks, making it even taller than the Galaxy class.
    0:44 states that USS Verity's registry number was NCC-97007, but the art shows it being NCC-97000. This actually contradicted Star Trek Online's canon, which stated 97000 was USS Odyssey's number. Cryptic would later establish lore stating that Verity's number was actually 97001. This is made more confusing by the fact that STO also released a variant of the Odyssey called the Verity class as part of its 10th Anniversary bundle, the first of its line using the number NCC-97005.
    2:28 The Aquarius-class auxiliary craft is compared to captains' yachts, areoshuttles, and runabouts, but it was more of a scaled down version of the Defiant class. While still being only a few decks high (we don't know exactly, but based off the MSD render I mentioned early, probably around four decks), it's equipped with phaser quad cannons and quantum torpedoes, much like the Defiant. The video also references how the Aquarius' docking port is where a shuttle bay would typically be on some past Enterprises, like the Constitution class; in STO there actually is a version of the Odyssey that features another shuttle bay back there instead of an Aquarius. It was the original free version of the Odyssey that was released as a promotion for the C-store versions that would be released a month or so after. To me this suggested the prototype for the Odyssey class didn't have the Aquarius docking port, at least not initially. You can still obtain this version of the Odyssey in STO with Fleet Credits from a ship vendor.
    4:42 The Yellowstone class Runabout in Star Trek Online did take its name from the Voyager version, but visually looks quite different from the Danube class, having a design style that fits in more with STO ship design aesthetic from the time. Though, referring back to that MSD, it uses a graphics of the Danube, Argo, type-9 shuttle, worker bees, and even the Mission Scout Ship from Insurrection all docked in the F's shuttle bays.
    7:24 Fun Fact: The Chimera class was just recently revamped in Star Trek Online. It looks WAY better now, in game. Cryptic actually got Jason Lee do the revamp himself.
    13:50 While STO's original canon stated that the Enterprise-F was launched in 2409, I don't think they're still sticking to that. Frankly, I was kinda glad when Picard announced they were making the F older than STO original timeline. It never made sense to me that the Odyssey class would receive a major structural refit that was compared to the Constitution's refit from the early 2270's after only a year of service (even with the Iconian War). But making the Odyssey a bit older makes the Yorktown refit make more sense to me.
    14:58 While Scylla and Charybdis, which released in January of 2018, was the first time the Enterprise-F had been seen in the Yorktown refit, the Yorktown itself had been a playable ship for nearly two years in Star Trek Online at this point, having been released in February of 2016 along with the two other Odyssey refit variants, Endeavour and Sojourner.
    15:11 Eaglemoss released three different Enterprise-F models. The first two were bonus issues to the original Star Trek Starships Collection. The gray one pictured in the video was called the "Federation Livery" version, and only exists because Eaglemoss didn't haven't much confidence in Star Trek Online's unique black and white contrasting hull design, so they made up their own that they thought represented a more traditional look of past starships Enterprise. This gray hull version didn't exist in STO until the models were released because if you bought it, it came with a code that unlocked a special "Eaglemoss" hull material for the Odyssey that you could use in the game. The second was the actual Odyssey class that was originally featured in Star Trek Online (and later in Star Trek Picard) which Eaglemoss called the "Star Trek Online Livery" version. The Yorktown refit model that was pictured in the video was not part of the original Starships collection, but was the 15th issue of Eaglemoss' Star Trek Online Starships Collection. Even Master Replicas still gets this wrong because whenever they've gotten the Yorktown refit version in stock they still label as the STO Livery version, but there was no "Federation Livery" version of the Yorktown refit.
    The Odyssey class is my favorite ship in Star Trek. I was so excited to see that it was being made canon in Star Trek Picard, but so disappointed in how they handled it, decommissioning it just so they could rebrand the Titan-A.

    The J is a colony ship-- its got all that extra space for habitat areas (kind of like the starbase in SNW). Very similar to a GSV in the Culture series. The odyssey class was meant to be a mobile starbase. Its got a massive hangar deck, and a huge bridge, and it's designed to take over as a command centre for wider fleet operations.

    • @Thrillhou
      @Thrillhou Рік тому +2

      @kaeaja Ian M. Banks is a scottish sci-fi author. He wrote 10 novels and a few short stories set in the same universe. (The "Culture" series. The first book was called Consider Phlebas)
      In that series, the Culture (Basically a bunch of humans, more or less. Bipedal, two arms, eyes nose mouth, etc.) Are one of several major civilizations (loosely akin to the Federation in Star Trek, which is part of why i made the connection). They're seen as intergalactic do-gooders, but they have the tech to back it up. A GSV (general systems vehicle) is their main ship-type. They have ships designed for combat, ships designed for exploration, and ships just designed for like, normal life. People live on them. They're tens of kilometers long, with many decks, they include lots of open-air nature space (or other species might need oceans or gas-giant atmospheres, etc.) At any given time few hundred million people will be living on a ship like that, just for scale.
      The books are great - I highly recommend them. If you don't want to commit to the full series, i recommend book 5, Excession. It's my personal favourite and doesn't require you to know anything about the other books, so you can drop right in.

He's offered the command of the F but decides to pass it on to Shawn (who at that point just lost his ship to a temporally displaced Dominion fleet)

It was the ingenuity of the crew that got them out of bad situations; the ship itself just did them the favor of not coming apart around them (mixed metaphor of the day - "Hear me, baby? Hold together.")
    Good list, always fun to talk about an Enterprise.

    Yeah, 15 years is still quite short for a ship named Enterprise though. For reference the US Ship U.S.S. Enterprise CVN-65 was in active service for a total of 51 years before it was decommissioned. We'll see if her successor U.S.S. Enterprise CVN-80 can beat that record.

    OK, this may be the nerdiest thing ever but: THANK YOU, Seán, for properly quoting Jim Lovell when saying "Houston, we've had a problem!" :)
    As for STO's canon vs Prime canon, I don't know if it'd be likely or if it has precedence in real life but consider this: The Titan/Enterprise-G is much smaller than the other newer Enterprises so let's assume that the F is put under Geordi's care at the museum. Because of the G's age and let's also assume temporary assignment as Enterprise-G it is decommissioned in 2407 or 2408. Then instead of designing a completely new Enterprise-H, Starfleet decides to dig out the old F and give it the upgrades shown in STO. That way, both timelines now come back in line and the F can still be under Captain Shan in 2409 and 2410 which is when STO takes place. Again, not sure if it's likely or even has happened IRL but surely it's possible?

    Based on "pixels" of an Odyssey Class schematic (scaled to 1061 pixels in width), the Aquarius Class escort docked at the aft of the ship, is roughly 90 pixels (meters) in length. Essentially a very large "Runabout", or about half the length of a Defiant Class. Supposedly it has 3-4 decks as well, making it a very formidable support craft and a small starship in its own right.

    The size of the ships is counterintuitive. They were larger because they had families and they spent more time out in space. The idea was they could go months before needing to visit a starbase. The also had every kind of laboratory & facility for science and exploration.
    The comparatively smaller ships were more useful in combat. Though Yar from Yesterday's Enterprise mentions the thousands of soldiers the D could hold. That would be useful if you needed to occupy a planet. Even in wartime, that's not really Star Fleets thing.

You would have thought that as Mars was still on fire, Starfleet would have looked elsewhere to establish a new Fleetyard perhaps around one of the Alpha Centauri stars, Sirius or Axanar.
