    Year of Release: 1993
    Game Review & Impressions
    ---------------------------------------------------
Released some time between 1993 and 1994, Jurassic Park is one of the very last, if not THE last game to use Sega's revolutionary super scaler technology. Leveraging Sega's System 32 arcade hardware, the game really is a master class in technology and programming, combining a huge numbers of on-screen sprites, parallax, pre-rendered CGI and clever use of perspective to get as close to a 3D as possible without actually being a true 3D engine.
Naturally, the fact the game was associated with one of the hottest movie blockbusters of all time goes some way to boosting the game's credentials, but this game really shows Sega's incredible prowess in the arcade space. Anyone who got to experience the sit-down arcade cab, complete with drapes/shutters to block out unwanted peripheral light, found themselves totally immersed in this dino-blasting experience.
Much like Alien 3: The Gun, Jurassic Park is a relatively simple on-rails shooter, with players shooting dinosaurs and objects which pop out in front of them. Personally, I think the actual gameplay is weaker than Alien 3, in part due to its repetitive nature, and also thanks to some weird inertia on the gun sights, but there's no denying the set-pieces, particularly escaping from the terrifying T-Rex, are excellent.
As stunning as Jurassic Park is, Daytona USA would, however, be launching at around the same time. The high-resolution, 60 Hz refresh rate racer with texture-mapped graphics would make even this masterclass in 3D fakery seem archaic by comparison - sprite scaling could only get you so far.
As a last hurrah, Jurassic Park was a fitting send-off for the technology which had powered Sega's top-of-the-line coin-op hardware for close to a decade.

The way the T-Rex derps when it tries to reach down to bite you is simultaneously hilarious and terrifying. The fact that they animated such a large collection of sprites together to make a big creature like this is always fun to see.

I think the sprites are part of a pre-rendered CGI model - the fact it can scale those up and maintain some semblance of definition is impressive

I love these kinds of graphics, they make me very nostalgic. Might be my age or, again, nostalgia but there was something more special and fun about gaming in the 90s compared to these days.

As neat and chaotic as this game was, it's always just funny to know there's unavoidable damage. No matter how good you are, you're taking near-death damage.

    • @AL82RetrogamingLongplays

This is most noticeable in the T-Rex battles: as soon as it becomes vulnerable, you must hit it in every available frame for it to register the stumble animation. Miss even a couple of shots, and it will rock the jeep and take down your energy. The final battle is similar - your jeep taking damage is pretty much scripted at that point; you can't stop it.

It’s likely game was balanced around having a partner. There’s no scaling down for solo play unfortunately! (Of course, having a second player doesn’t increase the number of health packs in play.)

Agreed. I am not a fan of Nintendo Switch. But this is far more exciting and superior. I wish my local Chuck E Cheese did not remove this game.

A nice touch at the end: The second T-Rex with the yellow health bar had less health because it still hadn't recovered from its fall.
While the first T-Rex is more determined to catch you. This is because you didn't beat it and you slipped away mid-chase.

I remember playing at my local arcade center. A green Wobbly Jeep mounted with Pilot like joysticks as Tranquilizer machine gun. Honestly, you don't wanna play this game at night with the advertise sound on. The Continue music is terrifying as well.

No wonder John Hammond's dream failed: instead of investing in security and more closely vetting employees so they aren't seduced by rival corporations, he hired a maniacal highway architect and built Jeeps that can withstand thousand-foot drops from cliffs. Absolute mad lad, Hammond was.
I don't remember this, I recall the other cab shooter where it had a camouflaging Ceratosaurus indoor fight, but this was a lot of fun to watch.

To be fair when it comes to Raptors and Tyrannosaurs you want a sturdy jeep and a highway they can't follow you on.
People always bring up Nedry when you mention that Hammond spared no expense, but Nedry put in his bid for the job at low wage himself. Hammond gets a lot of blame for that Dilophosaurus snack.

Seeing how good this game looks, it’s a little telling why Sega went with the 2D sprites to generate polygons on the Saturn. In 1993 this game couldn’t be done with 3D hardware. Super scaler was so good it clouded their judgement on what the future of fantastic 3D would be.

The intro says you return to the island… AGAIN? So you visit the island a third time? What were you doing there the 2nd time? This plot point is never resolved.

So this game is taking place after the end of Jurassic Park. After Grant, Malcolm, Ellie, Hammond, Tim & Lex survive Isla Nublar. Then, this game takes place a few months later when Ign sent either Ign security or mercenaries to help subdue the dinosaurs that has now taken over Jurassic Park.

I feel like a lot of these fights could have been avoided with a better driver. The Triceratops and Gallimimus are the nice ones you idiot. Stop driving into them. Also those two raptors at 2:30 have the same side of the screen ambush pose as the Xenomorph in Alien 3 The Gun. Can we get a Jurassic Park/Aliens crossover?
