- Mexicantown has been celebrating Cico De Mayo for decades. But folks say this year's celebrations came to a screeching halt when DPD closed a long stretch of Vernor Highway.
What a bunch of garbage. Law enforcement should be ashamed. Residents have been doing the same thing for years without issue.

They Definitely need to be sued, Street vendors with legal permits were forced to pack up and leave because they said there was no such thing as a permit for them and the orders to pack up and go came from up above that is ridiculous people are only tryng to make a living!

Yes, we were there too. It was a great parade, lasted two hours. It ended at Scotten like always.
There has to be more to this story than we are being told. This is not like the DPD and Cinco De Mayo is always safe and friendly. Even the cops didn't know why they were dispatched there.

Yet the police followed those orders without even questioning them. They don’t protect and serve anyone but their leadership and themselves.
after I went put of the church there I did not see people as all years, now I see why, racism? gentrification racism? why this happened?
This is why Detroit keeps stumbling. The city closed down the market and the celebration of SWD for no reason. Harassed the people celebrating their culture and never apologized. Police should be fighting real crime.

We were there. Arrived early, watched the huge two hour parade, left when it ended. Everything looked normal, people were having a great time! This story is a total surprise! Hope there's a follow up to clarify.

@kelliparra2483 thanks, we were born, raised, and spent a couple of careers in southwest Detroit here. This neighborhood has remained relatively stable throughout the decades of Detroits decline. This parade is the biggest event of the year here, stretching along a 2 mile route. This seems to be an isolated incident at the start of the route. Not gentrification. But we drive the City looking at the progress and there's plenty of it! We invite anyone to ride along!

A bunch of thugs, is that really what you want to say. It was BS, but no one was hurt or injured. Racist people always want to use the word "thug" when black people are involved. I have never ever seen a white officer referred to as a Thug with any kind of bad behavior.
It sounds like Chief James White is incompetent and should be removed or demoted at the very least.
If it was JUST a CROWD CAPACITY ISSUE why not just close off the entrances .. Very off putting how they handled THIS EVENT 😒 They sure handled the Draft event BETTER
We were there. It was a huge success from our point of view.
I agree with the promoter, It’s totally understandable, to close the streets if deemed unsafe due to overcrowding, but let the businesses know that that’s a possibility in advance.
Certainly, a shutdown for safety is foreseeable and knowable to the organizers.
@@ralphjessee2688 from what I’ve read, there were a lot of businesses blindsided by the streets being closed down.
They have been doing this for a decade or more, they knew the permit process and had all the necessary permits. The business should all band together and sue the police chief and department.
So why didnt they shut down the crowds at the draft? It was way more crowded then this.

We saw them, it was a huge two hour parade, and a huge crowd. It was difficult to even walk down the street!

as for the roads, yes, ironically the cannabis money is supposedly helping with that as well, the larger PICTURE being they need to be FIXED. I WONDER IF the REPUBLICANS would do so either, if they want to bash Whitmer. What would THEY prioritize? We have a Republican city council in my county of a certain city who ignores the badly needed, near unnavigable, undriveable roads and has for a long time. Hopefully other news stories or this one elaborate further, and I will be checking. smh. It never ends. Never ends. But it shall, thankfully, in generations to come. Too long for this old man. @@thewiseman1132 not at all, though I do not like her signing bans on certain things. Would the REPUBLICANS get those roads fixed? I would have actually preferred a more progressive governor, but Whitmer fit the bill enough at the time.

Certain people are trying to gentrify this area and trying to obviously trying to make people in that area uncomfortable so they will leave or sell so they can take their plan to the next faze.

The TAX PAYERS and the EVENT HOLDERS NEED a TRUTHFUL EXPLANATION as to WHY it was shut DOWN so they can resolve the issue moving forward … it doesn’t take but a couple of sentences to answer the question from the chief of police. So the distribution of time allocated WAS APPROPRIATE even though the Chief answer didn’t appear to be FULLY DISCLOSED.
