- Springwells is a pretty densely populated neighborhood when going by Detroit's standards. It has a large Hispanic community, and today Springwells is actually one of the more diverse areas in Detroit. Springwells has a rich history, and the commercial district along Vernor helps give Springwells a vision of hope for the future. It's Detroit though, and that means that crime, drugs, poverty and unemployment are all at extremely high levels.

I’m not American nor do I live in the states but when I watch videos about Detroit it makes me sad 😢 beautiful old large houses , leafy green streets and in a lovely part of the country ! It’s too bad most of Detroit has been left to rot ! You can tell it was once a thriving city .

Detroit is known for corrupt mayors, high crime and condemned houses everywhere. Even in the 1980s there are movies making fun of the high crime rate. Detroit is a lost cause
Don't be sad. Be happy for us. I moved into the city 10 years ago from suburbs about 25 minutes north of here. I couldn't be any happier I did. The city has so much rich history. It has so much beauty to still see and enjoy. Great restaurants, museums, parks, sports teams, and national one of a kind events like the auto show, the electronic music festival, and 4th of July fireworks being largest display in North America.

I lived on Ferris from 65-68. And the memories of the nuns and single lay teachers from St. Gabriel moving into our homes during the riots is a memory as well as the Army jeeps driving up and down our street from Patton Park to downtown Detroit. It was a shock seeing the Ferris street sign in your video. I cried watching because your video brought back memories of my mom, dad and two brothers when all were young, alive and had a lifetime ahead of us. Thank you.
Grew up on the next street over, Wendell. I can still remember when Patton Park was full of military vehicles and tents, small world.
Grew up near Patton pool, learned to swim there. Awesome place back in the 50's. 4th of July parade down Vernor with the Mayor of Detroit riding in a convertible to the pool. Fireworks at night at the pond behind the pool. Lived at Woodmere and Lawndale when you walked to St Gabes when it was no problem then had lunch at the New York Coney Island at Lawndale and Vernor. Sometimes after school we'd go to Paradise Candy store too. Too bad about the Rio theater, spent many a Saturday afternoon there. But it was a great time growing up at Patton Park, and the parents had other ideas in 1965 as we moved out to the west side of Detroit as our old digs was getting kind of rough. The old man worked at Wolverine Tube at Central and Pershing until it closed in the 70's leaving many workers high and dry. Great ride on your WayBack Machine. Keep up the great work you do.
Too long of a story to tell but I've moved back to the greater Detroit area and am looking to try to buy my childhood home back. I love Detroit and want to come back home, the yellow house on the corner of Trenton and McGraw. I was thrilled to see it!! I'm so grateful for all the important information you've provided.
Very interesting. My Grandparents raised my parents in the Springwells area in the 50's and 60's. They tell me good stories from that time. A lot of their time was spent around the Catholic Church, St. Gabriel's on Vernor. My Dad lived off of Pearl St & Vernor. My Mom lived off of Rathbone & Springwells. My Dad would walk My Mom home from school and then walk all the way back to his house. Lol! Such a sweet story. Thank you for this series.

Joe, You can’t change history by ignoring it. I was born in Detroit, back when Eisenhower was President.
There are many reasons why Detroit is like it is. It is a good city with a lot of good people and things to do. It also has a side that is very bad and crime ridden. Yet even in the worst of it you can find good if you want. And if all you want to see is the bad you can have that too.
Chris has given this city what is probably the most honest evaluation I’ve ever seen, the good, the bad and the ugly.
The city of Detroit has been through a lot since it was founded in 1701. It is a city in a constant state of change.
But you can’t bury your head in the sand and pretend it doesn’t exist. It does and the only way to bring lasting change is to call it out for what it is. Love each other! Love your city! Show pride!
I too am optimistic about the future of Detroit. But it needs to have manifold problems addressed before it can become a great city once again. I think anyone who loves Detroit - including our elected officials and those with money to invest should watch the videos that Chris has made.
Springwells and the rest of Southwest are some of my favorite neighborhoods in Detroit. It's unique like other spots I like, but also in close proximity to downtown which is a plus. I appreciate the information you provide about different locations you pass by
All of the old schools in Detroit are so historic and pretty. It's a shame most of them will get torn down.. wish there was a way to repurpose them for something
if you would of turned on Lafayette blvd off lawnwdale st you would of been where i lived in the late 70's early 80's chamberlain to lawndale to Lafayette blvd so close was 1 block off. i went to southwestern high school thanks made my heart pump watching
Born and raised in southwest Detroit on Norman St. Went to St Gabriel school and Holy Redeemer HS. As a kid I worked for Paul's Pizza and Fergusons Mobile at Dix and Carson also help Mr Ferguson delivere milk.
I had a Free Press paper route on Inglis and Norman streets. I am very proud to have grown up in southwest Detroit. I swam every summer at Patton Park pool.

Worked at PP too, 73, went to Wilson and Chadsey, that was the coolest neighborhood back in the day
I lived on Norman as a kid in the 80s, between Pitt and Bell. I would love to buy a home on that street and go back for my retirement to finish my life where I started. Just a little concerned about pollution since I have asthma. It was such a great neighborhood. Such a rich and diverse range of cultures seemed to all get along. I remember we would all play in the fire hydrant on the corner of Norman and Pitt. An experience I've never heard of since. I never knew I lived in the hood until I moved away and people told me.

Thanks for these videos. I was born and raised in Detroit and I miss it. Would love to see you explore Oak Park, Ferndale, Southfield, Royal Oak. In the 1970s I went to Paul L Best Elementary on Rosewood, but then it became a jr high and I had to go to elementary at Andrew Jackson (now a private school). We would walk to school. I would have gone to Ferndale High or Oak Park High if my family didn't move to Arizona. We used to cross 10-mile and sneak through the fence into the Detroit Zoo and we would also sneak into the attached golf course and take golf balls in the lawn to bring them home to take them apart to see how they are made. My neighbor was Doris Biscoe, anchor and reporter from1975-2000 on Channel Seven. She took me to the studio once to watch her do the news. My goal is to move back home and these videos are just killing me.
Videos on the suburbs will come eventually, might be a while but stay tuned!
Thanks to Mayor Duggan, the lawns in those parks are being maintained. And he is committed to clearing the blight versus lining his and crony's pockets. This actually warms my heart to see my hometown I had to leave behind coming back to life!

Hey I just found your channel. I’m enjoying these Detroit videos being a native and still living in the area after returning from grad school in mid Michigan. It’s nice to hear the history behind all this familiar scenery. My mom and grandma used to talk about how beautiful the city was and the decline after the riots. I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s and lived to see much of it torn down. Imagine all those vacant lots filled with raggedy decrepit crack dens… the vacant lots are actually a clean start for a new beginning. Still it was a shame to see so many beautiful old architectural gems destroyed, they don’t definitely build em like they used to.
So very well done and so sad at same time. One can see that Detroit was once truly a grand city to live in for so many. What an interesting comparative observation in the superb narration about Henry Ford. The incredible detail makes it possible for the viewer to experience the patchwork pattern of abandonment and be able to discern the difference between Detroit and other cities...for me this is especially appreciated. To add to the whole effect the soundtrack reinforces the visual. Most amazing of all is that Chris has a way of making a place like this fascinating to experience and learn about...go figure!

I grew up on Logan St at Central across from Wilson Jr High. This breaks my heart as the only thing I recognized was St Gabriel's Church. I went to All Saints on Fort and Springwells across from the Fleetwood plant there. Used to go to Patton Park for the fireworks every 4th of July with my dad.
I worked at the Fleetwood plant from 85 to 87. Great times and bar hopping after work
drank Boones Farm Strawberry Hill in Patton
It's a Historic District, and it's very close to Mexicantown which is a great place to visit, and stroll around and stop at all the Hispanic (not just Mexican) stores and restaurants. It's also just on the other side of I-75 from Fort Wayne which is very interesting and holds fun events.

You were on McGraw, passed Chadsey HS grounds; my alma mater, 1973. Munger middle school was already there, attached by a covered walk through, adjoining the two buildings. Some of us had mixed classes between the two. The commercial foods department located in the Munger building, was know throughout the U.S. for its programs.

Yes you're spot on about the decline after the race rioting it really broke Detroit's back on safety and popularity. I was 12 and remember both my grandmother's were still there. I was born in Garden city and remember my parents trying to get them to move out and away from there, nevertheless they both stayed until there deaths. But regardless I have fond memories staying a couple of weeks in the 70s at grandma's place on palms Avenue near verner highway 🤸♂️😁

I have a suggestion: I would love to see an exploration like you do of the Nor-Wayne Historic District in the nearby community of Westland. Sometimes referred to as Shacktown. It was built in 1942-1943 - during WW2. The houses were built quickly and cheaply with many unique features about their construction (electrical and plumbing for sure) to minimize use of material. It's really a interesting area with a unique charm.
I heard you say how young your grandfather died well my grandfather was a train engineer all thru Detroit. He used to give me & my brother rides. The tracks were in his back yard on 4247 western st. He would just go out early morning the train would drive by & he would just grab on & away he went. We’ll my grandfather died very young to. Smelling all those toxic fumes. Cancer.
I lived in that area for 35 years and my house is in the video.
I lived on Woodmere about 2 blocks from the park building.
It was beautiful growing up there. My brother and I used to run around the park (approx 2-1/8 miles almost every day.
You are a real Detroit historian. I've studied old Detroit maps and saw where villages stood before the cities expansion. I grew up on E. State Fair and Greeley a few miles from the State Fairgrounds in the 1950's and 60's in an area that might have been originally called Ford Estates although other than Platt maps I haven't seen any early photos of the area and would appreciate any info you ever do present. I remember when I75 began construction on Oakland Blvd in my neighborhood. I now reside in South Texas and seeing your Detroit videos is real joy. Thanks for your fine work.

I lived off of Green on Chatfield back in 1990-92. I used to walk down to Motts every day to catch the bus.
We had no phone, no car, no cable TV.
Little to no law in this area, at that time. Which was great unless you needed the law. Lol. Man you could do whatever you want. I drank in the bar at 17yrs old. But again, you call the cops. They're not coming. Even though police station was 10 blocks away.
I've since moved very far away. But I learned a lot about surviving when I lived in Detroit.
My uncle use to hang out at the Chatfield bar it was like Cheers on TV Where everybody knows your name 😂
Moe's store is still there in 2021? WOW. It was the closest corner store from where I grew up in the 70's.

"South Detroit" is NOT technically Windsor, Ontario, Canada!!!!
You have also, in my opinion, spoken the truth about Detroit "coming back" in our lifetimes... I find that particularly heartbreaking because I am old enough to remember the very tail end of Detroit's glory days and to remember what a beautiful, vibrant city Detroit once was.

I used to live in Hong Kong and told people I was from North of Canada.
It's not literally Windsor. Literally, there is no South Detroit. Downtown sits with the river to it's south and across the river is Windsor so people will discredit the song with a joke saying South Detroit is either in the river or in Windsor.
True. If you head south from the center of Downtown Detroit, you're gonna get your feet wet, then Windsor.
In the early 60s I lived on Wilde off of Fort St. Remember 4th of July fireworks at Patton Park. Went to Beard Elem. from K-2nd. Had to move in '65 since I-375 took our house.

After you turned on McGraw, (before that really), you were not in the south west side. Anyway, at 31:00 minutes you turned left on American street. 45 years ago and before the people on the blocks from Diversey to Warren used to decorate their homes for Christmas like you wouldn't believe. They would string lights across the street from tree to tree. It was fantastic. Miss that.

This city is the best example of promoting people to positions because of race or gender, not based on ability.
From Coleman Young’s first day until, well, now. The natives running the show will blatantly tell you “your not black, no assistance for you” at any Wayne County branch of DHS.

My great, great, great grandfather was the President of Springwells. His name was Welcome DeLisle and he had the lumber contract when Fort Wayne was built on his father-in-law’s property. His name was Joseph Livernois.
I played little league baseball in Patton Park back in the 1970's.
Lived on Chamberlain between Springwells and Lawndale in the early 80s. Quite a few houses gone from that street now.

That Family Dollar on Vernor used to be a Murray's Auto parts.
My grandparents are buried at that cemetery. I remember it having a tall wrought iron fence and huge headstones.
I enjoyed watching this video esp. since I use to live in Detroit. I do hope it gets better there. There are some great people there. I went to Southerwestern High school. So sad to see that it closed down.

Facts about the place I love southwest Detroit
Grew up in southwest Detroit- 70-80’s we don’t call that part “Clayton” it’s all southwest Detroit! Went to Beard elementary- my sisters went to southwestern high- my grandma is buried at woodmere! Went swimming at patton park all the time! They used to have the best fireworks on the 4th! Vernon used to have big parades!!!
I like your video series, and now that I found it, I’m going to spend a lot of time watching these for better or worse. I’m in the same mindset as you, but a thought popped into my head. It would be really hard for the residents of these areas to get the education that they need to move up and improve their lives with the city constantly shuttering the schools in their neighborhoods . The city at one time obviously valued education as evidenced by the sheer number of schools scattered throughout the city, and a lot of them are now unusable so it’s kind of a paradox. Anyway good work, I enjoyed.

We called Clayton the McGraw/Lonyo, Livernois or Central neighborhoods when I lived at 5641 Springwells.
Lived here all of my 60 years. I have never heard of Claytown...ever that is until I saw this video. However, anything that can be done to change the horrible way it is perceived by non-residents is a positive thing. I love SE Michigan, all of it...
Was on slow i75 traffic in the late nineties and was able to see the Springwells neighborhood/happenings for a minute. Looked totally vibrant!

Thank you for doing this video. My great grandparents lived on Logan Street (may not exist anymore). My grandparents are buried in Woodmere. I worked on Delray for a couple of summers in the early 1980s so it’s nice to see Springwells exists and isn’t going to die like Delray.
I lived between central & green a few years I worked at Sakthi & dollar general on Vernor. Honestly loved it there even though that was a rough spot in my life but I wouldn’t ever change that.

My grandmother was born in Detroit in 1916 she can remember the horse-drawn carriages called the dung wagon that would pick up human feces in the Alleyways before the sewer systems were installed

On a professional note, I've been watching your videos for a while. Always informative and entertaining. I particularly like the time and location stamps for reference (Hey, I drank at that Bar! Its STILL standibg???).
I've watched your camera skills, audio and editing tighten up with every video. You're a talented writer and a natural speaker, but you seem to be getting more comfortable and relaxed in narration. I most enjoy your sarcasm and your snarky comments. (More replies to commenters, please!). You are also pretty knowledgable about Detroit, but also humble enough to admit when you 'don't know' something, forget something wrong.
Have you ever thought of doing stand-ups along the way at businesses & sights? You would probably be good at it. You also seem savvy enough to know where NOT to stop!

The biggest problem with getting out of the car and filming stand ups, interviewing people on the street or anything for that matter… even getting drone shots can be very time consuming.
More often than not, I don’t have time to fit that in for every video as I have a very limited amount of time that I’m able to spend for everywhere that I go.

This designation Of Claytown is new to me. The only connection near this area was the brick ovens over on John Kronk up by Miller Rd where there was Clippert Brick Co if I recall where clay bricks were fired.
I remember that neighborhood when it had 3 movie theaters on 4th street that I dad the Hollywood theater the Lincoln theater and the Rex theater Rex theater or did we have a good time

I bought Vernor’s in Colorado and the cashier asked me if I was from Michigan. Close.
Interesting that you mention a strip bar on Dix that had a name with an off color connotation. That bar was on Dix but in Dearborn just west or southwest of the Rouge Plant. In its former life it was known as LaBaron's, just a working man's place not a strip bar and it was in competition with Little Joe's which showed up in the movie Blue Collar. It was a gathering place for the sailors off the Ford Boats who brought ore and coal to the Rouge and the guys who worked the docks and around the blast furnaces. It wasn't a long walk if you went out Rouge Area Gate 1 right onto Dix and I made that trip late at night without any issue since the whole area was industrial. That was in the mid-70's into the 80's. Not sure when it changed from LaBaron's but by then Ford had sold their boats and I was going elsewhere. Lot's of good people worked in the Rouge at the steel mill.

Thanks for doing these videos. It is unfortunate what greed and corruption can do. Mr Young was very corrupt, knew where all the bodies were buried. And a friend of the mafia. The corruption has been in place since Detroit was founded. The English and French brought their criminal behavior with them which is unfortunate. I grew up in Dearborn heights, which was Dearborn township at first. Dearborn treated us like the poor bastard child until we had enough residents to become a city.

I always love living in majority Latino neighborhoods because I can find more affordable places that are reasonably safe and the neighbors tend to do everything in their power to avoid having to call the cops!! 😂

Many of the neighborhoods look decent. The only time I drove through this area (back in 2001) was on I-75 and I was shocked at how much trash was along the side of the road.

The new infrastructure bill should help out the residential neighborhoods cause the governor is spending a good chunk to fix city sewer and water which means lower water bills that caused many homes to be abandoned cause the residents couldn't afford to pay thousands a month.
