Welcome to the Sabaton Army. Sabaton only writes songs about history, not ongoing conflicts. They don't take sides except with the individual foot-soldier. One great example of this is their cover of Motörhead 1916. Stunning music video.

Floor has never even been on a Sabaton music video set, as far as I've heard and I'm sure there would be some cool photos and stories from her if she had

      1. In the video, a boor can clearly be seen and the pants legs are positioned at an orientation impossible unless there is a leg in them. So much for your empty pants snark.
      2. Did you ever consider that it might have been a spur of the moment action. Sabaton has a sense of humor and is known for little Easter eggs they never explain.
      3. Unless you have access to her itinerary or personal knowledge, there is no way you know if Floor has been on a Sabaton video location or not. Since fan videos have shown her at Sabaton concerts, it is quite possible she traveled with her husband to a shoot.
We don't know if the rumor is true, and may never find out, but why make such a big deal about it.

They fired nearly 300 Torpedos and around 4000 artillery shells on the Bismarck. After a hit on the rudder she could no longer be steered and could only travel in a wide circle.
Due to the damage to the wreck, it is now assumed that the crew sank the Bismarck themselves.

@@globus9710 Well even myths in history are often inspired by real events, just embellished as time goes on and as it is retold by each generation. Until there is no way to separate myth from history. The story may not be 100% true but some things are lost to the sands of time. So we can't really fault Sabaton for thinking an event was true if there is no sure way of knowing one way or the other, or at least which parts are actually true or not. By the way which is your favorite Sabaton song? For me it's sort of a toss-up between The Carolean's Prayer and Lion from the North.

  • @alancarter41
    @alancarter41 3 місяці тому +16

Excellent reaction. Sabaton uses themes of individual and group examples of heroism, sacrifice, and humanity that emerge from the chaos and horror of war. They do not glorify war of take sides, instead they simply tell historically accurate stories that should never be forgotten. Props to Sabaton for going out on a small trawler on the open sea to film the band segments instead of using a green screen in a nice warm and dry studio.
Interesting factoid: Without the actions of America, the Bismark would likely have escaped the British. After the Battle of the Denmark Strait, where the Bismark sank the HMS Hood, the British assumed he would return to Norway and focused their search there instead of France. The US Coast Guard Cutter Modoc, assigned to rescue operations off Greenland, had rushed to the scene of the battle to assist and spotted the silhouette of the Bismark as he fled south and radioed the information. The next sighting of the Bismark was by US Navy Ensign Leonard Smith. Smith was "on loan" secretly training the British to fly the PBY Catalinas they had purchased in 1940 and his sighting allowed the British to chase, catch, and destroy the Bismark. Yes, I understand the Germans actually scuttled him, but he was a wreck by then.

As a side note here. The name they gave the boat at 2:53 is taken from an older song by the band, from the older setup of the band.
If you want another awesome song from Sabaton you should react to en livstid i krig (a lifetime of war) live Scandinavium Gothenburg.
The album Carolus Rex they had released during that time is about a part of Swedish history called the era of great power (stormaktstiden in Swedish) from when Sweden was a much bigger nation with ambitions of expanding.
The album was released with both a Swedish and English version, the difference being that the Swedish one tells the story from our/a Swedish soldier's view while the English one is more from an outside observer's.
It is the Swedish version they played at that show so be sure you have the subtitles on, I was at that show and all I can say is that you will not regret it.

Thank you for your reaction. Bismarck and the cruiser Prinz Eugen sailed out on commerce raiding planning to attack British shipping. The Royal navy intercepted with a number of ships included the Battle cruiser HMS Hood and the more modern battleship HMS Prince of Wales. Hood suffered a magazine detonation and blow up while Prince of Wales had technical problems and decided to hang back following the German ships rather then directly engaging. The battle has caused an oil leak from Bismarck and the lack of fuel as well as the oil leaving a trail made it impossible to continue commerce raiding. With some clever actions they managed to exit Prince Eugen to go on with the mission without being followed while Bismarck tried to go back to port and the British units lost track of it. Bismarck was found again and had to be slowed down with Swordfish torpedo planes which hit a rudder with a torpedo. This forced Bismarck to sail in a circle. Bismarck ended up in a hailstorm of close range fire from various British ships, some battleships, which is the end battle that you see in the video and Bismarck sunk.
The way I learned this is from the channel Drachinifel; video "Bismarck, Operation Rheinübung - First and Last Voyage of the Bismarck", highly recommended. When it concerns the rescue of German sailors from Bismarck, that video provides that HMS Dorsetshire, a heavy British cruiser, did start working on rescue and saved some German sailors but there was a U-boat alarm, possible for a U-boat approaching to try to find Bismarck´s log, and the risk for a cruiser being a sitting duck tragically forced HMS Dorsetshire to abort the recue.
Just a note, Swordfish planes were actually two seat, but such a minor detail aside, it is a great video by Sabaton.
    Have fun! :)

Sabaton is a Swedish band with a loooong list of history based music.
Sabaton also has an award winning history channel that gives background to over 120 if their songs (not music award, academic, aimed at education of the public) .
Sabaton videos are often have dedictions and/or messages at the end, perhaps not always but... watching to the very end is frequently well worth it.
Animated STORY videos (short Animated history lessons with music videos in them)
No bullets fly, enemy showing mercy to injured aircrew in a nearly wrecked aircraft barely still flying, even escorting them to safety.
Night witches, Young (17-28) female bomber pilots in ww2 fighting the Nazi despite the discrimination they faced and being given obsolete equipment, aircraft ...
Lady of the dark, female fighting alongside men during ww1 and being highly respected and even more decorated.
Red baron, the famous fighter pilot of ww1
first soldier, unlikely French hero in ww1.
    Epic ORIGINAL videos.
you just saw Bismark, about the sinking of the ship
Christmas truce, about the spontaneous truce in some parts of the western front during Christmas 1914
40:1, about polish soldiers, badly outnumbered (just under 750 in all) facing 42 000 germans, they where BADLY outgunned desperately defending against the German invasion 1939 (with odds actually close to 55:1 they held for 3 DAYS when ammunition and supplies ran out.
Uprising, the Warsaw Uprising against the nazi germans during 1944.
To hell and back, they tell the story of Audie Murphy (highly decorated) and his struggle AFTER the war, so about PTSD and drug addiction that returning soldiers can face.
Fields of verdun, the 300+ day long battle fought there.
Price of a mile, about the battle of Passchendaele
Screaming Eagles, about the battle of the bulge
    Live performances
    40:1 from poland
    Uprising from poland
En livstid I krig live from Göteborg Sweden (in Swedish but there are subtitles) , very heavy again, about thoughts of a young man going to war.
    Two covers that are good
    Defence of Moscow, self explained
1916 about the devastating battle of the somme in ww1, casualties topped 1 milion if you count both sides, all for 6 miles of ground,
these are just some, there are plenty more.

Yes a game studio gave us Hollywood quality special effects, one could even say better than Hollywood because they do have far fewer resources and created this masterpiece.
Another video that is very impressive is for the song "No bullets fly", it's an animated video, and i actually believe it is a fan-made video? (not 100% sure of that)
That video is also highly professional and shows the story they sing about, in every bit of detail you'd want to see from such a video, just as incredible as this video is.

The Bismarck set sail from Norway on the 21st of May, 1941 and met the British warships Hood and Prince of Wales on the 24th in the Denmark Strait between Greenland and Iceland where the Bismarck blew up the British battlecruiser Hood. Three days later, the British caught up to the Bismarck (27th May) because Swordfish torpedo bombers from the aircraft carrier Ark Royal got a hit on Bismarck which jammed its rudder, causing it to travel in circles. The British battleships King George V and Rodney pummelled the Bismarck into scrap and then the cruiser Dorsetshire fired torpedos (shown in the video) and the scene from the video shows the Bismarck going down.
Dorsetshire rescued about 110 people from the Bismarck's crew of 2000 before reports of a U-boat in the vicinity caused her to break off rescue operations and leave the rest of the survivors to drown.
The compass that the German officer gave to the seaman is the same compass that the skipper of the boat carrying Sabaton has. The sailor was his father or grandfather (I don't remember which).

1.30 - what made the Bismarck famous was the fear she caused n the effort put into sinking her based on the treaties set after would ww1 n the position of Brittan when it was deployed. after ww1 the nation set limitations on thier military to prevent an arms-race, however in the 1930s some nation including Germany stated going going against them, the Bismarck and her sister ship the Tirpitz were among them, while counties like Brittan n France were still were, meaning Germany had the more powerful ships. fast-forward to may 1941 Germany managed to advance to the English channel leaving Brittan alone n relying on surplices from the u.s. witch they had to protect them selves from Germanys smaller ships n subs. not wanting these 2 ships out in the open to make thing more difficult they hunted the Bismarck down for over a week when she deployed just to protect the supply convoys. as for Tirpitz she was kept in Norway until November 1944 when the r.a.f. managed to bomb n sink her.

The reson why it looks so good is becouse they partnered up with Wargaming a gaming company that focus on historical warfare through there games World of Tanks, World of Warship and War Thunder (aircraft)
They showed how the ship was hunted aswell as what sealed its fate. That torpedo hit they showed wasent there just for show, The Bismarck toke a torpedo hit from 1 of those planes that crippled its rodder and was forced to sail in a big circle and the Britsh navy then surrounded it and unloaded everything they hade at it. Even after 400 shells hitting the ship and several torpedo hits the ship refused to sink and after all 4 turrets got destroyed unable to fight back anymore its belived that the Admiral ordered the crew to scuttle the ship themself by opening up compartments and they flooded the ship themselfs.
Sabaton songs focus on historical conflicts and heroes in those conflicts without taking any political stance or showing favor to any side in the conflict.

"I've watched a lot of reactors, and it's so interesting to listen to what they say. Thanks for you noticing that the band honored history, and that's exactly right!. First, in the events leading up to KMS Bismarck's sinking, you have to understand the context. The following are historical facts from the German archives.
In 1940, when Bismarck was commissioned as the flagship of the Kriegsmarine, the German Navy, it's original mission was simply to be the flagship. This was the original intent from Adolf Hitler. Admiral Karl Döenitz, however, disagreed, and without Hitler's permission, sent the Bismarck out to combat the Allied convoys from the US that were Lend-Lease materiél being sent to Great Britain.
In Bismarck's first engagement, he battled and sank HMS Hood of the British Royal Navy, which was the Royal Navy's flagship. Prime Minister Winston Churchill was so angry he ordered the British Admiralty to send every available ship to sink Bismarck.
With the HMS Suffolk and HMS Norfolk shadowing Bismarck, they tracked Bismarck well enough to radio the HMS Ark Royal, one of the first aircraft carriers, Bismarck's location. Sending it's air fleet of 20 Swordfish bi-plane torpedo-bombers after Bismarck, the planes were ineffective against Bismarck's thick midsection armor plating. Bismarck, however, had issues with it's AA guns. First, they had severely limited the elevation of the AA guns, which meant that the range of AA protection was ineffective. Second, the planes being shot at were old World War I-era bi-planes, made out of cloth and wood -- which meant that even if hit, the plane was not damaged enough to be knocked out of the air. Most AA rounds would, unless it hit the engine or fuel tank, simply pass through the plane.
That being said, the second engagement of Bismarck spelled its doom. Prior to launching the Bismarck, German naval engineers had warned Döenitz and other naval commanders that one of Bismarck's weaknesses was an exposed stern, and exposed steering linkages and chains. The second engagement saw Bismarck get hit with, I believe, four torpedoes, along with main cannon fire. Again, three torpedoes were ineffective, but one torpedo and two direct hits on Bismarck's stern resulted in a steering system that could only turn one way.
After the sinking of HMS Hood, the Royal Navy sent out 16 escort ships, Norfolk, Suffolk, and two battleships and two heavy cruisers, among them HMS Rodney. Four days from making port in France, the Royal Navy attacked Bismarck. For over three hours, he was relentlessly fired upon. Suffering damage to his fire control stations, main 15" gun turrets, radar, and a direct hit to his bridge, Bismarck had over 4500 shells fired at him from Rodney alone, who had to be ordered to stop firing when Bismarck finally sank beneath the waves. Out of over 2,000 men on board, I believe only 117 German sailors survived the sinking. The man in the video, who is holding a compass with Bismsrck's last known coordinates in it, is a descendent of the last survivor of Bismarck's sinking. The reason for giving his ancestor the compass is that he was an enlisted man on the bridge while serving on Bismarck, in all probability the equivalent of a petty officer in the US Navy.
Later inspections of the Bismarck wreckage show that Bismarck did not sink because of external damage, but rather because his crew scuttled him to keep the Enigma machines, German code machines, from falling into Allied hands. They scuttled the ship by essentially superheating the boilers, which would have blown apart Bismarck's hull when the supercooled Atlantic Ocean seawater hit that hot metal. Similiarly, this happened with HMS Titanic when she sank in 1912.

The comment you made at the end about rescuing enemy sailors and/or leaving them to drown, both happened in this case. HMS Dorsetshire (the British Cruiser shown in the video at 6:41) was ordered to pick up survivors. About 300 of the 2000 German sailors jumped overboard before it sank. However a German submarine was hunting the Dorsetshire so the Dorsetshire left after only rescuing about half the Germans and left the rest behind.
