Thank you SO MUCH for including that Admiral Lutjens ordered the scuttling of Bismarck. Too many "old school" historians will not admit that fact (that has been confirmed now for almost 20 years). Just to correct you a bit the crew had previously placed explosive charges on the Admirals orders as a "just in case" measure. After being decimated by point blank shelling and torpedo runs and still afloat, Lutjens issued the order to scuttle Bismarck. The sea cocks were opened and the charges detonated resulting in the clean separation of the stern approximately half way through the aft swastika pendant painted on his deck. Huge WW2 history geek here too. Particularly Battle of the Atlantic, Battle of the Denmark Strait, and the European theatre. Also when Bismarck and Prinz Eugen engaged Hood and Prince of Wales, the Brits opened fire on Eugen first mistaking Prinz for Bismarck as their silhouette were similar and from what I have read, researched and viewed Bismarck did not cross the T. Both sides were firing broadsides (though the German positioning did prevent the Brits from actively using their aft turrets - Bismarck and Prinz were further ahead) from a distance of 24 miles Bismarck, on her second salvo landed the shot that killed 1415 men and left only 3 survivors. Prince of Wales landed a round into one of Bismarck's fuel tanks forcing the course correction towards Breast and right into the path of Ark Royals Swordfish torpedo planes. There is a fantastic 2 part documentary from Channel 4 in the UK called Battle of the Hood and Bismarck. Very worth hunting down if you havent seen it ;)
The Prince also got a round through the front nose on an angle of the Bismark. Causing a slight list. Loved the story of the Bismark. James Camerons docu about it is really good as well.
@@OldSkuleNerd did you see James Camerons Documentary about this? The topedo wall (behind the outer torpedo belt) protecting the inner hull is undamaged. Further cementing that Bismark wasnt sunk but scuttled.
I am a history guy, too, but never found any citable source that the scutteling was ordered / executed. Just comments like yours, stating that. Do you have any source on that? Be it a book, or a public articel, I just want to get something official...
@@TheBlackob other than the survivors, physical evidence from the wreck itself. Nothing "official" Watch James Camerons documentary on the Bismark. He goes over the ship with mini subs and drones. They show numerous locations of shells impacted but not breaking. They show the belt where the torpedos hit. They show behind that torpedo belt and the inner armour that isnt broken or open. Meaning it wasnt flooding. It shows the broken rudder that was hit by a torpedo. Once you see the ship, surprisingly in very decent condition, considering the over 2000 shells fired at it. You will also come to the conclusion that it was not sunk. Look, its not saying that the COULDNT be sunk. Or that nothing the allies did could stop that ship. No, it was quite handly beaten in that engagement. No, it was still floating, and the Germans didnt want the ship to be captured, there was an enigma machine on board, and I dont recall if the Allies had cracked it yet, and if they had, the germans didnt know it was cracked. The Bismark sunk....by order.
Fun fact: Sabaton also has a UA-cam history channel where they, and a historian, go into more depth about the history behind the stories/events/people that their songs are about.
“War knows no nation. This video is dedicated to those who fought to the bitter end in the battle of the Atlantic” is what you missed in the end of this video. I’d rather your comments be long on a reactions vs. others who barely make any comments. My only criticism is to make sure to watch the video to the very end.
Like Rammstien's Deutschland. A lot of people miss A LOT in that video, either whether through Rammstein's well known 'shock rock' style of metal or simply through ignorance of... well, many things... it's effing Rammstein.
FOR THOSE WHO HATE WHEN I TALK TO MUCH>>> YEAH SORRY ABOUT THIS ONE BUT ITS THE FREAKING BISMARCK>>>>> THIS IS THE STORY THAT CAPTURED THE IMAGINATION OF MY CHILDHOOD!!! Sorry again!!! lol
@@kwes8466 well if I go 80% Nightwish I will run out of videos lol but I hear ya but I can Promise you here are a few of the Artists coming: AMARANTHE, More Sabaton, More Nightwish, Falling in Reverse.... and yes even BabyMetal..... THOUGHTS?!?
@@OldSkuleNerd If you like Sabaton musically and don't mind a more Werewolf themed band, then the germans from Powerwolf should be on your list. "Army of the Night" should be a good entry point.
Regarding the CGI: Sabaton has an ongoing cooperation with the gaming company War Gaming. They specialize in WW2 tanks and warships (World of Tanks, and World of Warships, respectively), so they have accurate models for the ships, water/wave/battle simulations etc. already and it's relatively easy for them to produce such videos. Still a lot of work for sure but they didn't need to start from scratch.
@@OldSkuleNerd if you react to Primo Victoria by Sabaton (a song about d-day and also the name they painted on the fishing boat in this video) you can see them driving "their" tank, which is actually available in World of Tanks as a premium tank. complete with guitars strapped onto it and such
@@OldSkuleNerd Just in case no one has mentioned it yet, the Sabaton side of the deal with 'War Gaming' is they provide some of the music for the games...
@@OldSkuleNerd That's also one of the reasons why "Bismarck" has so many more views than Sabaton's other music videos: Its posting was actually announced in the WoWs game client, resulting in a flood of curious players watching and getting hooked on Sabaton. I was one of said curious players.
🤷♂️🇮🇪 Greetings to you sir from Ireland . 😀 no need to apologise about your commentary i really enjoyed listening to you your knowledge about this historical event was excellent . I came across Sabaton purely by accident . I too am a history Buff what we learned at school is nothing compared to what Sabaton has given us War facts and not propaganda by the system . . The first song that drew my attention to the group was their Song 1916 . This is significant because i was born and bred in the North of ireland ....Belfast . Every 1st of july we remember the 36th Ulster Division approx 5.000 Soldiers died at the Somme .
14:20 that’s actually HMS Prince Of Wales, a King George V class battleship, the Hood is never shown in this video because she’s already gone as you heard on the radio in the beginning.
Could also be the King George V. But definitely a KGV class Battleship, distinguishable by the three turrents with the 1st and 3rd beiing larger than the 2nd.(4 barrels vs 2)
I agree it looks more like HMS Prince Of Wales, if you pause the video and compare images of the two ships it's quite clear. But HMS Prince of Wales got damaged in the same engagement as Hood was sunk, so I don't think you should read too much into continuity with the shots and the radio message in the start.
@@dirkschmidt2276 No, it was Hood and Prince of Wales that engaged Bismarck and Prinz Eugen. Hood was sunk, Prince of Wales recieved multiple but less serious hits.
It's about _your reaction_ to the things you see in the vid, not a "watch-the-video-together"-format with no pausing at all (copyright issues aside). If you would keep your thoughts until the end of the video, most details and bits that you catched during the video will be lost and the reaction will contain just an aftermath/summary. So please keep pausing whenever it may be convenient to share your thoughts with us - it's _your_ channel, _your_ format, _your_ style. People that are complaining about pausing too often, miss what these videos are about and better stick with the original versions. So even with my bad English (50yo German dude, who never had a lesson) I'd encourage you to keep talking about your opinions/impressions/experiences. No need to thumb up this comment - better thumb up the vid and the channel - he's doing a great job here!
Hello from America. Sir, your English is better than what some of my fellow Americans try to pass of as English. You have my respect because English is not the easiest language in the world to learn.
for a man with no formal English lessons, that was phenomenally written. not just getting your thought over clearly, but spelling, grammar and punctuation too, damn it.
I was a Yamato nerd but all WW2 interested me. My dad reached Lt Colonel in the Army(Vietnam vet) and I grew up talking history and science with him. Good memories. Kids today don't seem to care about history.
@@DonFatherTrump Hello from a fellow history nerd. What you said about today's kids is so true. I don't know if it is because they are not interested or it's because of the crappy public school system that we have now.
I'm also a naval nerd I don't know much I do know about the Bismarck the hood and one thing I'm gonna say he got hood wrong that's a kgv class battleship I'm not sure if its king George herself or if its hms prince of Wales ps I love sabaton
As an German i love when people who are not from Here speak german especially with historic things for exampel many americans say Luftwaffel instead of Luftwaffe (Luftwaffel means Airwaffles)
9:01 The coordinates shown in the compass are the coordinates where the Bismark sank. 10:18 Primo Victoria is the name of Sabaton's first album, as well as one of their songs. That one is about the Battle of Normandy. 16:44 Joachim Broaden is famous for the 'banging his knee' thing and it's become quite the meme among fans.
RIP the crew of HMS Hood and KMS Bismarck. rest in peace all the men who died on both sides of the battle of the atlantic, soldier and merchant sailor alike, fighting for what they felt was right. A true Soldier never looks forward to his enemies with hate, but backwards to his home with love.
You need to check out Sabaton History and do the songs. You gonna nerd out totally. They are awesome. A Bit of Trivia: Hannes van Dahl the drummer of Sabaton is Floor Jansen husband
More fun trivia - Hannes is good in the kitchen. :-) Seriously, Floor posts little storytelling-type things here on her channel, and one of them shows a small clip of Hannes and their daughter Freja, along with Hannes's drum tech, making syrup from berries picked on their property. So adorable! (Especially seeing those two big tattooed dudes in aprons, lol!)
History nerd!? Well you've found the right band. Sabaton's songs are all historically based, heavily fact checked during writing and very, very well made. Whatever people are recommending in the comments from them, it's all good! Got your self a new sub.
You are the only reactor I ever saw who caught on that early. The song tells the story of what happened, and how that compass came to have those coordinates in it, but most are too busy with the music to realize it.
It is really awesome to see someone who actually knows about the Bismarck. War Gaming's (the company Sabaton collabs with a lot) historical advisors are on point. They create games like World of Tanks and World of Warships. The advisor for World of Tanks has his own history channel on UA-cam. He was also a tank commander in the US Army. Also, Sabaton is perhaps the best war history band out there. All their songs are about military history or combat in general. They have a bunch of great songs. Screaming Eagles, To Hell and Back, 82nd All the Way, Carolus Rex (personal favorite), Sparta, and so on and so forth. Every history buff should discover them.
30 minute video? This is going to be a good one. Sabaton have a ton of songs to react to but I would especially recommend "En livstid i krig" the Great tour - Gothenburg" it's in swedish but there are subtitles for the lyrics so if you decide to do it remember to put them on. It's a fantastic live performance that will make you long for the days when Covid is gone and concerts can start again.
yeah 30 mins but not because of the music but because I am a HISTORY NERD of the highest order!!!!! I did hear their live stuff is as EPIC as their videos.... I AM SO EXCITED!!!!
@@OldSkuleNerd This is the best kind of reaction videos, we can watch the song any time we want, but it's always fun to watch people talk about subjects they know a lot about and applying it to the video.
@@OldSkuleNerd Yes! Ok, perhaps I say it because I'm a history nerd as well. But I learned so much from your reaction. But beside this, too, I agree fully with Magnus Criwall.
For anyone wondering the video game developers for World of Warships, was the ones who did all of the ships and planes for the video, they have dedicated a lot of time and effort to recreating the ships (for Wargaming in general tanks AND planes) in all of their glory. WOWs history channel also tries to bring some more attention to the ships that are going unattended and need funding for repairs and to keep these beautiful ships open as museums, one being I believe the USS Batfish. Please if anyone wants keep some of these ships open for the public, visit one there are many all over the U.S. Also check out World of Warships so they can also continue to keep naval history alive and well, as well as Sabaton so they can continue to make beautiful music about the worlds many conflicts and heroic men.
I learned about the Bismarck from the 1960 Johnny Horton song, Sink the Bismarck. Sabaton certainly has a different approach. 😄 Sabaton is an amazing band and it's staggering the themes they write about. Their songs inspires one to learn the historical context. Thanks for telling us more of the history of this event.
The CGI in this video was done by Wargaming. They have some of the most accurate WWII and pre-WWII digital naval ship models in the world. World of Warships is a main staple of their games. Their gaming engine is actually what they used to make this video, they just cranked their graphics and physics to 100%.
@@OldSkuleNerd BTW: Till startet this cause in one of their concerts he dislocated his kneecap and tried to get it back in. His band asked him what that was and said that it looked cool and he should do it more 🤣. Suggestion for another Sabaton song: Ghostdivision
Love you, love the channel. Quick one, when you pause it and talk about seeing the HMS Hood, it isn't the Hood. The Hood had 4 turrets, 2 forward and 2 aft. The ship on screen has 3 turrets but the same 'gap' for a plane. You are looking at a King George V class battleship. I too am a massive WW2 naval history nerd! Big up the nerds!
You might want to check out Sabaton's video for Night Witches - if you look at the one that says "Animated STORY Video" it has a cool history lesson about the subject before the song actually starts.
The ship in the sights of the Bismark is the HMS Prince of Whales. You can tell by the boxy super structure of the King George V class and the three turrets. Two quad 14" guns and one double, which was the only one that worked during the battle because she was so new.
Sabaton actually have a history channel on here called Sabaton history. They talk about the history in their songs, including the battle of Bismark. you might like it :)
If people complain about he taking and pausing they can go and watch the original video, like why are they here if they don't want to hear what you have to say, always baffles me :'D
If you love naval warfare they have done songs about Midway, Wolfpack (german u-boats). They also have a You tube channel were they talk about the things that the songs are about. Its called Sabaton History.
A fun fact though, the battleship in the first scene was not the Hood. It was the Prince of Wales, the battleship that fought with the Hood in the Battle of the Denmark Strait. I believe the scene was taking place after the Hood was sunk, and the Bismarck briefly engaged the Prince of Wales thereafter. Really loved the reaction my guy!!
So glad that someone who knows about history and specifically the Bismark is reacting to this. I did virtually the same thing when I first saw this. As for Sabaton military history expressed through song is their thing. Almost all of their material is telling the story of a battle, heroes, or war; no matter the side. You'll love these guys for that alone, of that I'm certain.
The two ships that fought against Bismarck during the battle of demark strait was the Prince of Wales which was a Battleship and the Hood which was a battlecruiser.

I knew this was going to be a good reaction when you started to comment on the compass. Seeing at least 50 different reactions tho this video, you are the only one that got the connection between the captain of the fishing boat and the young sailor. I am a history nerd too and am very familiar with the history of the battle of the Denmark Strait, the pursuit by the British fleet, and the gruesome end. But you managed to learn me a thing or two, your knowledge is fantastic!
Dude, my fav thing about reacts is how the person themselves react to the video. You geek in about about historical accuracies is why I'm here. I love learning new things and seeing people's genuine reaction of things like music and stuff. Keep on man. I for one , like it
Also when you do 82nd all the way, make it a three parter, both bands version and then the live show from Oslo where they do it together. Amaranthe is a fun band, you will probably like them.
It was the Denmark Strait and it was Prince of Wales accompany Hood - between Iceland and Greenland. Hood had just turned to unmask aft turrets when took fatal hit.
14:15 Okay, so lots of stuff to talk about here. First, that is not the Hood, but one of the King-George-V-call battleships. From the storytelling it's probably the HMS Prince of Wales, which accompanied Hood on her final and fatal voyage. Note the distinct boxy conning tower, that is characteristic for the WW2 ERA British battleships, as compared to the old style found on Hood and the pre-refit Queen Elizabeths. Also Hood never had a plane on board, and also didn't have that gap. Thanks for listening!
Great review. Talking included. One thing you'll love about Sabaton is they have a Sabaton History channel where they explain the history in depth behind every song. Great for filling the blanks in personal knowledge gaps.
Also the guy in the beggining of the video your pointed out with the compass. WAS the lieutenant on board the bismark. He passed away earlier this year.
Video was released 1 year after the last survivor [with the compass] died - his son in the video on the fishing boat. You have 8 albums of history by Sabaton to go. Also check the Sabaton History Channel for details behind the stories in the songs....
So. I enjoyed the historical aspect of this reaction. I'm a WW2 history buff, but with free time from family life. I recently got to know Sabaton from a co-worker, in which he was hired 4 weeks ago. He recommended I check out this band because of their historical relevance. I listened to their top 5 on spotify and I was enthralled. Now that I came across your reaction to this one music video. I will enjoy every next one to Sabaton. I will pass on your feed to my coworker. Hopefully he will be well endowed to your feedback. I'm hooked. FYI, I'm a scaffold foreman studying nutrition at the University in NM. Quite odd but just right for the presevernce.
Coincidence: Sabaton are from the same town I grew up in. Sweden IS pronounced with ”W”, not ”V”. Sverige, on the other hand, is pronounced with a ”V”. Sverige is the swedish name, Sweden is the english name.
It's funny you mentioned Ramstein and the movie XXX because Sabaton actually recorded a cover of the same song Ramstein did for that movie. The song is called Fire Frei.
What I understood is that Sabaton made the soundtrack to the game World of Warships, and the game creators made the clip for them in return. It is a free to play game, you should try it!
Isnt the british battleship in the first scene a King George V Class ship? If I saw correctly it only got 3 turrets, and i think almost every ww2 BB of Britain had this Gap in the ship.
Sabaton are doing history and music justice, they are making sure history isn't forgotten. That sacrifice should not be forgotten silently but instead SCREAMED OUT LOUD against the tides of time.
Great Reaction! Something to the sinking of the Hood : Bismarcks shell didn't go through the deck armor, at the range the hit occurred the shells trajectories wouldn't exceed 16 degrees (from the horizontal)! The 15 inch Magazines of the Hood were sourrounded by refitted 4 inch Magazines /Storages! And if a shell from Bismarck would manage to go to/near the Engine room and explode there (then the shell wouldn't have to go thru the 305 mm of belt armour, which was very low in the water btw) the splinters could easily reach the 4 inch Magazines which then could set off the 15 inch Magazines!! But there are many theories regarding the sinking of the Hood! The Video was shot in Turkey, the Harbour was in Istanbul, and the fishing boat is the Karadeniz B! The second ship you talk about at about the half of Video is NOT the Hood! It is the HMS Prince of Wales! Remember... At the beginning the Hood is already told to be sunk! If you want to ask something about the Bismarck or the Video here, feel free to ask I have many books regarding it here at home! Greetings from Germany
thank you for this reaction and comment to bismarcks history. enjoyed it. had a selfbuild three foot plasticmodel of the bismarck as a kid, because she and her history were so impressive. and: sabaton drummers wife is no operasinger. greetings from germany
In 1935 My grandfather moved to Hamburg from Bremen to take an Engineering position at the Bloom and Voss ship yards to help design the new Firing control systems for Bismarck and Tirpitz. He joined up and was was assigned to Bismarck a week after his launch. He was in Damage control most of the time but during the last battle had to go topside to help reset the firing control systems so he survived. The stories he told of his time aboard him where awesome and heart braking. He and another sailor where the ones that rescued Oscar the cat. I never got to meet any of my grandparents but his journals and the stories passed on where inspiring.
So glad to finally hear from a Sabaton fan with knowledge of history. I'm amazed at how many people go in watching Sabaton but have very little idea of the historical context. A lot of this was household knowledge for me. Really great video.
As an aside, read up on the Battle of Tarranto. The Royal Navy carrier HMS Illustrious launched 21 swordfish to attack the Italian navy in port. The Italian strength was six battleships, seven heavy cruisers, two light cruisers and eight destroyers. The Swordfish damaged 3 battleships, 1 heavy cruiser, and two destroyers The thing about this battle was that it was thought impossible to launch torpedoes there as the harbour was only 39 feet deep and it was thought aerial torpedoes needed 75 feet to launch successfully. Later the Japanese sent their Naval attaché , Lt Cmdr Takeshi Naito from Berlin to investigate the attack. He later had a long conversation with Commander Mitsuo Fuchida, the leader of the attack on Pearl Harbour.
One thing you didn't mention that they also get right historically is how the Germans refer to ships as male while most people say she. But damn good commentary
Sorry for late response but that is not correct. Ships are allways refered as female in the german language. Only the crew of the Bismarck talked about her as a male (Der Bismarck) but the correct form is (Die Bismarck) wich is the female form.
I appreciate the fact you know the story. Most of the people who reacted to this had little clue if no clue at all to what the Bismark was and its significance. I am a WW2 buff as well mostly focusing on European Theater, and this is deffinatley a favorite.
Interesting fact: You were using "she" when speaking about the Bismarck but in the song you can hear "he was built..." which is actually accurate because I think Hitler himslef decided that they will refer to Bismarck as to him instead of traditional her.
@@martinlange1781 I believe the captain began referring to the Bismarck as a "he" because it's so damn powerful that a feminine pronoun doesn't do it justice.
Just coming back to this one after having you recommended. Sabaton are an amazing group and these videos are absolutely killer. Although I'm 7 years younger than you, reading Sinking of the Bismark (followed almost immediately by Bob Ballard's The Discovery of the Bismark) was quite a lesson in history was definitely part of my entry into Military History like you. Seeing my love of metal and history combined (hell, part of why I love Iron Maiden too) is just such a joy and it's awesome to see you geeking out (as I did) watching this and the other Sabaton videos.
I was a naval history nerd, too as i was a kid. Well..... i'm still a naval history nerd. Because of your awesome reaction to this, i had no other choice as to subscribe to your channel. There were to battleship vs battleship fights involving the Bismarck. The first was in the Denmark Strait between Bismarck and Prinz Eugen on one side and Hood and Prince of Wales (King George V-class battleship) on the other side. The other battle was the sinking of the Bismarck which occured in the Atlantic after Bismarck was attacked by the Swordfish bombers from Ark Royal and couldn't run away any more. There the Bismarck was attacked by the King George V (Admiral Toveys flagship) and the battleship Rodney as well as two heavy cruisers. I agree with everything you said, only one small detail: The ship you can see in the Video through the binoculars is either the Prince of Wales or the King George V not the Hood. I think its Prince of Wales because the scene is shown before the Swordfish attack. You can distinguish them by the number of gun turrets. Hood had 4 twin turrets (two front and two aft) just like Bismarck, while the King George V-class ships had 3 turrets (one quadruple and one smaller twin at the front and one quadruple aft). The Video was made in cooperation with wargaming. You should check out their game World of Warships. While the game is an arcade game and not a simulation, you should not expect much realism in the battles but the ship models are absolutely stunning.
I want to say that this is the first mid-video commentary that lasts more than 15 seconds I have been willing to watch. I am a mentally disabled adult who has desired to get into making UA-cam videos and people like you are my inspiration. My historical inspiration are both Norse mythology and WW2.
Interesting fact is the fisherman in the video who took the band to the ocean on his boat - is actually the real son of the last survivor from the Bismarck, and the watch shown in video - is the authentic one with coordinates scratched by the captain of Bismarck.
Funfact "at the bottom of the ocean the depths of the abyss - they are bound by iron and blood" Is a reference to the "iron and blood"-speech of Otto von Bismarck infront of the german house of representatives 1862
I love to hear you to talk about Bismarck and history in general. I have seen so many americans watching this video and not knowing ANYTHING about the history behind it. Nothing! Very nice reaction, from another history geek😁
Some fun facts about the Bismarck, It's AA guns were set to hit "newer" faster planes, which is why by luck the British using out dated slower bi-planes to attack the Bismarck worked so well. Also the Bismarck was never meant to go out alone, the original plan called for 6 German Battleships and some Cruisers. How ever 5 of the battleships were being repaired and Hitler being his impatient self, ordered the Bismarck to sail with only the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen and three destroyers. The destroyers were left in Norway and the two ships sailed on.
Just came across this and I am so glad that finally someone doesn't only reacts to the music but actually goes into the historic background of the song. I wish more reactioners would pause more and actually get deeper into the song. If I want to just hear the song, then I don't need to watch a reaction. And I love seeing you so excited about the Bismark story! My grandfather served on the Prinz Eugene, so the Bismark and the sinking of the Hood was something I got to hear a lot about as a child so it's awesome to see other people so passionate about it! It always makes me think of my grandfather. He would have loved seeing people so interested in it.
I cant explain it but your voice and mannerisms are very calming and relaxing, i just found you today but i can already tell you're doing an amazing job. thank you for the great content
Whoo! Don't think I've heard of you before now, but seeing this reaction/history nerding was super awesome! I support more 30 minute history analyses of Sabaton songs.
OSN. The Bismark was shot at by over 4,000 shells, suffering 400+ hits to the ship. Even THAT, and several torpedo hits, was not enough to sink such a heavy (50,000 tons+) battleship. Yes, at the end, the British Navy torpedoed the Bismark, but from examination via ROV dives, which show that there are no large holes from torpedo hits in her hull, she was not 'sunk' by the British Navy. The Bismark's Admiral ordered that the petcocks be opened to scuttle the ship and deny her sinking by the British Navy, thus preserving the Honor of the Kriegsmarine (German Navy). So, you are totally correct about how she sank, and why her turrets are several miles from the resting place of her hull on the seabed. Once she had shed her turrets, as she sank, her hull would have turned upright again due to the weight of her keel. This is why she is upright today on the sea bottom. You are totally correct in the ranges of the ships as well. Bismark's 15 inch guns ranged out to 16 miles, and nothing Brittan had at sea could match that. Had that 'lucky' torpedo hit to her steering gear not occurred, I am certain the Bismark would have made it to a point where the Luftwaffe would have protected her into port in France. Although massively wounded, she could easily have been repaired and put to sea again to terrorize the ocean, and History would have told another tale of the Might German Battleship, the Bismark. Even though I am an American, I can appreciate the Engineering and genius of the Bismark and her design, and honor the memory of those that fought for their nation. Just as I acknowledge the bravery and persistence of the British Navy, as well as our own. the Sea is a harsh Mistress, and one that will take your life in oh, so many ways. Yet she is beautiful and majestic, and Humans have come to love her. Which is why ALL seamen, of any nation, will do their utmost to save other seamen of ANY nation, even though they be 'enemy' crewmen of a ship they have just sunk. You do not just ignore them and doom them to die in the Sea's embrace if you can possibly help in any way. Because they will not ignore you should the same happen to you. This sense of 'shared danger' was what led to the Christmas Ceasefire in WWI. And I wish it would happen more often in these modern times. You may not agree with your Foe's reasons for War. You may disagree with their religion, creeds, and other facets of their society... but in the end, they are Humans, just like us. They too want to live, survive, provide for their families, Serve their Nation, and obey their commanders, and live by their code of Honor. But none of those are reasons to hate the individuals that Serve. Be it on Land, Sea, or Air and soon, Space. The final scene you missed, where it has a text message about this. 'War knows no Nation' Frank-ly speaking.
One of the best reaction video to Sabaton's Bismarck, that knows exactly what, which, how things happened during Bismarck chasing. Also, bind that information with music video's Mise-en-scène. Not a just typical reaction for CG or song, but with a large respect to a naval warfare history, which only the nerds like us know and understand. great job! But in some points, there's a missing. First, unlike the Jeff Budd's opinion at top, with camera and professional divers research in James Cameron's Documentary, most fatal thing that killing Bismarck were three(3) torpedos by UK cruiser, HMS Dorsetshire. Even before torpedos arrived, already half of the Bismark was sunk. There's pciture from HMS Dorsetshire filming that moment. And what made Bismarck holding UK fleets a long time is not a great technology of German. Ironically, Bismarck built in WWI era tech, which contains turtleback armor, idea came from Battle of Jutland / Skagerrakschlacht. Because of this, Bismarck's deck was really, really weak and thin and weak at shells from long range or high angle, but it had great opportunity to defense shells from broadside. UK didn't noticed that, so HMS Rodney and HMS King George V went close to Bismark, doing close quarters battle. They engaged close into 2km which is really close distance to battleships between battleship, which made their shells inefficient. But even with this, Bismarck's turret structure was poor, and rivets' quality were also not good, so after battle begun their turrets immediately broken by UK battleships' shells.
german dude here, also navy nerd, especially Bismarck and Tirpitz geek. I have to say, you got it right in almost every detail. I'm amazed. A "normal" american dude with historic knowledge further of the usual 300-400 years of there own nation. ;) Sorry for my bad english.
You're the very first one of all the reaction videos I've seen who reacted like I did when I first saw the huge Bismarck come out of the fog. Most other UA-camrs probably didn't even see that part or didn't care as much as you and I did... Excellent video, salute, Sir!
Hi, OldSkuleNerd! Have to say, this is definitely my favorite video from you so far! It is amazing to see how excited you are with the story as it is part of your childhood. Absolutely amazing!
Just came across your reaction to this song, possibly my favourite of Sabaton songs. Fun fact though, in the part you described HMS Hood to be accurate to design and Bismarck itself by design here is the reason why. The band teamed up with game developers from the game "World of Warships" to get full depth of the Battleships and to get it reacted to historical events. Loved the reaction, keep up the awesome work 👍
Just so you know the man the band met with in the beginning of the video was the actual last surviving member of the Bismarck's crew his name escapes me but he passed shortly after the video was filmed
I was also that kid reading Ludovic Kennedy on the Bismarck under the desk 😅 Love your enthusiasm, and I for one like your stopping technique. (The Denmark Strait is the one between Iceland and Greenland! You were right first time! Denmark governs Greenland!)
Very worth hunting down if you havent seen it ;)
I was wrong about the hood the image in the video was the Prince of wales.. sorry I was too excited lol uboat.net/allies/warships/ship/4071.html
Once you see the ship, surprisingly in very decent condition, considering the over 2000 shells
fired at it.

Yep, "dead on the money" about a ship that had 4 turrets while looking at a ship with 3.
It was the King George V. The Prince Of Wales has not participated at the time the Bismark was sunk.
Sabaton is an amazing band and it's staggering the themes they write about. Their songs inspires one to learn the historical context.
Thanks for telling us more of the history of this event.
I have been waiting for someone to know the history when they see this. ROCK ON! \m/
The CGI in this video was done by Wargaming. They have some of the most accurate WWII and pre-WWII digital naval ship models in the world. World of Warships is a main staple of their games. Their gaming engine is actually what they used to make this video, they just cranked their graphics and physics to 100%.
BTW: The move, when Till Lindemann from Rammstein is slamming his fist on his knee is called a Till Hammer.

@@OldSkuleNerd BTW: Till startet this cause in one of their concerts he dislocated his kneecap and tried to get it back in. His band asked him what that was and said that it looked cool and he should do it more 🤣.

Sorry, but the ship in 11:30 is not the HMS Hood. I‘m not sure if it could be the HMS Norfolk or the HMS Suffolk.

Finally someone that knows history to react to SABATON
The two ships that fought against Bismarck during the battle of demark strait was the Prince of Wales which was a Battleship and the Hood which was a battlecruiser.
I knew this was going to be a good reaction when you started to comment on the compass.

Favorite reaction yet, I love your insight on both music and history. Keep it up and keep being you.

Just to complete your experience please have a look at the last 10 seconds of the video, too :-)
As an aside, read up on the Battle of Tarranto. The Royal Navy carrier HMS Illustrious launched 21 swordfish to attack the Italian navy in port. The Italian strength was six battleships, seven heavy cruisers, two light cruisers and eight destroyers. The Swordfish damaged 3 battleships, 1 heavy cruiser, and two destroyers
The thing about this battle was that it was thought impossible to launch torpedoes there as the harbour was only 39 feet deep and it was thought aerial torpedoes needed 75 feet to launch successfully.
True
Actually that decision wasn't made by Hitler, but by Bismarck's captain, Ernst Lindemann
Lindemann saw Bismarck as so strong and powerful, that to call it a "she" just wouldn't fit.
@@frankjuggaloheathen1035 it was named after Germany chancellor Otto von Bismark
A ship is always a "she". A little guy out of the austrian alps cannot understand this.
@@martinlange1781 I believe the captain began referring to the Bismarck as a "he" because it's so damn powerful that a feminine pronoun doesn't do it justice.
Just coming back to this one after having you recommended. Sabaton are an amazing group and these videos are absolutely killer. The singer: Looks like Chuck Liddell. Right?
I was a naval history nerd, too as i was a kid. Well..... i'm still a naval history nerd. Because of your awesome reaction to this, i had no other choice as to subscribe to your channel.
There were to battleship vs battleship fights involving the Bismarck. The first was in the Denmark Strait between Bismarck and Prinz Eugen on one side and Hood and Prince of Wales
(King George V-class battleship) on the other side.

Interesting fact is the fisherman in the video who took the band to the ocean on his boat - is actually the real son of the last survivor from the Bismarck, and the watch shown in video - is the authentic one with coordinates scratched by the captain of Bismarck.
Funfact "at the bottom of the ocean the depths of the abyss - they are bound by iron and blood"
Is a reference to the "iron and blood"-speech of Otto von Bismarck infront of the german house of representatives 1862
As a fellow history nerd, its fantastic to see a more knowledgeable HIstory nerd take a look at Sabaton.
Thanks from Germany for your additonal historical knowledge.
I cant explain it but your voice and mannerisms are very calming and relaxing, i just found you today but i can already tell you're doing an amazing job. thank you for the great content
I’ve actually seen Sabaton comment on a reaction video saying to keep them coming, so full steam ahead!
'War knows no Nation'
Frank-ly speaking.
I just discovered your channel because of my love for Sabaton and history. If I have one comment, please, do not apologize for being who you are.
Keep reacting to Sabaton. For anyone who appreciates history and its lessons, it is the band.
