    This game basicaly gave us all the High School tropes in the end. The stalker and rival (Nemona), the shy geek (Penny), the "emotional plot device" (Arven), the bullies (Team Star), the Festival arc (Kitakami), the Transfer Student arc (Blueberry Academy) and finally the Camping Horror Story Arc (Mochi Mayhem) xD

    Oh. My god. THANK YOU. How is nobody else talking about how 🐕💩 those Roblox-looking ass blocks are, they're an absolute blight to look at! They're awful! How they aren't just a placeholder for the actual textures is baffling. Even using them as tables and chairs at the little beach area in the coastal area looked so effing stupid.
    Plus goddamn the DLC somehow runs even worse than the base game. The framerate at the Polar biome is abysmal.
    Great point about it not being clear that BBA was set in Unova without the NPCs explicitly telling us.
    Also. Don't tell the missus but I completely MELT every time you do your "Hey everyone~" intro, just so infectiously positive and I can't 😭😊
    UA-cam dropped the ball, I got zero notifications about your new videos since the Johto ranking even though I have the Bell rung and everything. I only found this because I actively looked up your channel again 🫠
    Fantastic stuff as usual! Psyched for the Hoenn tour! 👀

    Oh no, Nemona never ate the mochi she lied and pretended to be cursed, so she could excuse herself to catch and fully train a Kommo-o as it's her first time visiting Kitakami and have a perfect excuse to battle us again.

    A little clarification: kitakami isn't its own region but a small portion of a larger region (no doubt scaled up from what we would see if/whenever we go to that region).
    It's based on the irl kitakami mountains which is part of a much larger region of japan than the 4 regions we've seen in pokemon so far. It's basically the long chunk of land between kanto and hokkaido (sinnoh). So for teal mask we basically saw maybe the equivalent of the celestica town + the foggy routes + eastern mt coronet + the surrounding woodland area of a proper region

  • @Arcknives
    @Arcknives 8 місяців тому +5

    I decided not to play either DLC until they were both out, but man am I glad I did.
    Kitakami didn't leave much of an impression on me at first. But going back there weeks later made me realize how great it is and every time I hear the Kitakami music when you're just out and about, It makes me feel nostalgic???
    I missed going around with Carmine and battling alongside her such as with the titanic loyal three or the Milotic.
    And I missed watching Kieran come out of his shell with the player around. It really feels serene and sweet. I just wish Kitakami was... more, really.
    The environment in the Teal Mask is really charming.
    Indigo Disk was phenomenal, too. The Terrarium was a cool idea and the man-made biome-meshing environment was interesting. But yeah... the light blocks are so out of place.
    I had little experience with double battles, and Indigo Disk revealed to me how fun they can be. I loved the double battle gimmick and being forced to implement strategies into my battles rather than spamming the same moves. Also taught me to experiment with held items. I do kinda wish the tutors you can invite to BB Academy would have engaged in double battles too, but it's not criminal.
    And the characters. My god, they're great.
    Carmine and Kieran have become my two favorites of the franchise. Especially after Mochi Mayhem where their personalities are final and Kieran is at his best.
    Lacey and Drayton tend to be put in the spotlight when it comes to the BB League Elite Four, due to their ties to pre-established characters from Gen 5.
    But Crispin is my second favorite because he's the comedic relief character and he's oblivious to everything. Also his line:
    "I lost... 'cause I couldn't win..."
    Makes me laugh every time I battle him. What a silly little guy. And he underperforms in class (just like me!)
    And Amarys is surprisingly my favorite. I love how they handled her. While her dialogue is a little too stiff and her whole ordeal of speaking extremely formally can be monotonous at times, she wins me back over with her soft side, showing care for Kieran. And also her friendship with Carmine is unexpected considering how different they are, but the fact they get along is great representation.
    The stuff with returning to Area Zero was lackluster in my opinion, and the ending cutscene could have been so much more than what we got.
    Overall, the DLC was amazing, and in terms of the explorable world, easily beat the main game for me.
    Should have been $20, though.

    • @saffroncitytv
      @saffroncitytv  8 місяців тому +1

      I agree with all of your points; the nostalgia of Kitakami, the lovable characters, the cool biomes (minus the glowing blacks), and the fact that the ending was a little..meh. The only thing I would say is that I don't think the price of the DLC was unreasonable, necessarily, given all of the new gameplay implements. But I don't entirely disagree either. I think it you were to take all of the DLC content and make it its own game separate from SV, I would probably only be willing to pay $20 for it. Idk, I haven't processed that idea yet, but it's not a bad point.

    • @Arcknives
      @Arcknives 8 місяців тому +1

      @@saffroncitytv Yeah, it's pretty impressive that something I only played a little over a month ago can make me feel nostalgic for it. If I didn't have to beat the main game to get all of the DLC content, I'd totally restart my playthrough right now and go through the DLC all over again.
      And looking back, $35 isn't terrible, I think I wrote that after considering how most people reacted to seeing the price. If it was $20 maybe people wouldn't have brought it up as much.
      I gotta agree that personally, it was money well spent. I love just leaving the idle Kitakami music on when I'm studying or something.

    Excellent review! You really captured my feelings about the DLCs. I didnt even play Mochi Mayhem because I was pretty underwhelmed with how the Indigo Disk ended. I was so captivated by the lore of AZ after the finale of the main game, and I was genuinely excited to have more questions answered in the DLC! But I wasn't very satisfied, and I ended up appreciating Kitakami more. Also, I loved your breakdown of the olayer character and their role in the story! And the pidgey cry to bleep out swearing is a nice touch 😂

      I agree, I think SV set itself up to be wrapped up with a nice little bow, and the DLC definitely wrapped it, but still didn't tie the bow on. It was still good, but could've been better. @@saffroncitytv Definitely. At another point in my life, I think I would've sunk a ton of hours into many of the new features. What did you think about the professor's explanation of paradox Pokémon coming from alternate timelines?

    • @saffroncitytv
      @saffroncitytv  8 місяців тому +2

      I think it's a nifty piece of dialogue, but otherwise, I didn't think too much of it. I think once you travel into or connect with the past, you've already initiated an interaction with a different timeline, or created a new one. Time is kinda wonky wonk, and maybe that makes my theory of the player not telling Arven about the professor kinda moot, but either way, I think it's interesting nonetheless. Honestly, I get soggy brain when it comes to multiple timelines and stuff now. 🤣

    • @MDrams22
      @MDrams22 8 місяців тому +1

      @@saffroncitytv I was really hoping they'd commit to the manifestation of dreams theory where Terapagos is able to alter reality to appeal to people's ambitions/dreams! I don't think the dialogue we got has ruled that possibility out, the professor admitted that the Occult Magazines captured their imagination when they were younger, and giving them Briar's book heightened their obsession even more. Also Briar herself was obsessed with meeting Terapagos and her unwillingness to accept it in its base form may have assisted in it taking on its stellar form. I know gf likes to keep things vague, but this is probably going to be my head canon because if the paradox Pokémon really are just from the past or future, then imo, there wouldn't be anything paradoxical about them! 😅

  • @sveipr
    @sveipr 8 місяців тому +3

    Great review! While I don't hold the same opinions, I can totally see why you've had your experience. Personally I enjoyed the blueberry academy more than kitakami due to it being more focused on battles (VGC player here) as well that it felt more like the story of our character. Kitakami was more or less a sidequest and building up of Kieran's story that didn't even see the conclusion until Blueberry. Though I will admit what I enjoyed the most in Blueberry are what it builds off of Kitakami so I gotta give it props for that.
    But I do have to disagree about Kieran, because apparently the internet can't have a civil disagreement about the kid lol. I'm personally in the camp that we weren't a bad friend to him and that Kieran kinda got what he deserved. The main issue that people have with the Kieran plot is that we lie to him. Granted we do lie, but the lie is all about keeping Kieran and Ogrepon safe. Carmine tells us to keep quiet about Ogrepon the night we see it because it's dangerous to run into the mountains at night, a kid like Kieran who had an entire parasocial relationship with a mythological pokemon would have totally chased after it. The next day, we are asked by his grandpa to keep quiet in order to protect Ogrepon because he knows Keiran wouldn't be able to contain himself. Was it a lie of omission? Yes. Was it to keep Kieran and Ogrepon safe? Also yes. And the main character is a foreigner who happened to stumble onto the secret and truth of a local cultural legend. It isn't exactly our place to destroy an entire communities identity.
    And what does Kieran do when he finds out the truth? Immediately screams the secret to the entire town, tried to forcefully take Ogrepon even though she doesn't want to go with him, and continues to bully his entire school for months until we show up and stop him. Granted he does all of this out of frustration, but trauma doesn't excuse some... questionable actions lol. In the end it works out because it's a kids game so of course it does, but I don't think the player deferring to the opinion of others necessarily makes us a bad friend.
    In conclusion, Kieran AND Arven need therapy lol.

      I completely understand where you're coming from. I was being a bit hyperbolic in that section of the video. It was an interesting thought, and the writers did a decent job of subtle storytelling that could lead someone to think the things I proposed. Obviously, the main character isn't a horrible person, and the events of the storyline made sense. Kieran is a kid, and acted like it - I don't think he "deserves" to have a relationship with the Ogre or anything like that, I was just toying with some ideas here. We, as the player, aren't bad people, and the story doesn't really lead you to believe that either. I was just being kinda cheeky 🤪

    I believe you are 100% wrong about the MC being a monster and not caring. I feel you are mistaking the pity and unfairness you feel for Kieran as wrongness...
    But just because a person is weak doesn't make the victims.....
    To be fair, the character might not notice or fully understand what happened with the professor. It was a quick random meeting that made no sense that WE can fully notice because we are looking from the outside....
    ______________________
    And we lie to Kieran because HIS FAMILY told us to keep it secret.
    Also, Pokemon have feelings. We didn't do anything wrong in taking Ogerpon because Ogerpon CHOSE us....
    The boy had a darkness in him that made the legendaries not want him....
    And it wasn't us dominating, but us CARING.
    Ogerpon from the start noticed the light and love inside the player...
    Hell, we were rewarded for loving and caring for Koraidon/Miraidon and risking out life for a region we barely started to live in.
    Everyone is influenced by the love the player has for the world and the Pokemon......
    Yes, we could have done things better.... we could have trusted Kieran... but when he started to treat Ogerpon and Terapagos as objects, that was when he was wrong.
    Like the actual player (not character) might not treat the Pokemon with respect (cause they aren't real), the player character does....
    But Kieren instead blames the MC's power and skills instead....
    THE POKEMON CHOSE US!!!!!
    They weren't objects or prizes to be one, but beings that can make choices and they are able to feel the love and care of the people.
    Between a selfish brat who just wants to prove himself and treats them as an object or a trainer that loves them and allows them to pick for themselves, isn't it obvious who they'd pick????

      I appreciate your input on my thoughts about the player and their interactions with Arven. I was kinda just being hyperbolic about a thought-provoking scene in the game. If anything, that small meeting with the Professor was an example of the writers in this game doing a great job at subtle storytelling, that could ultimately lead someone could come to the conclusion that the player was the one who influenced the events of Arven's childhood. I was just being cheeky with it. Obviously, we, the character are not "bad" people - the entire SV and Kitakami storyline are essentially us being heroic with good intentions and helping out our friends.

      @@saffroncitytv you were being hyperbolic but admittedly it's great interpretation of the way everyone in these games kisses the ground the player character walks on taken to a bad degree which would be an interesting angle for a main game to take if the series stories (usually) weren't meant to be more for comfort than to be thought provoking lol. Kieran's arc is probably the closest we'll get but I respect the attempt at all.

    I actually like your review of the DLCs tbh. You articulate pretty well why I felt underwhelmed with my takeaway when it was over only if I isolate my experience from the fandom and community. Although, I cannot even argue that these DLCs were literally way too enjoyable to play through, even more when you marathron all of it including the SV main campaign within a week! It would've been nice if we've gotten a bit more content (wishing the writing department worked an extra mile more to add richer culture and interconnectivity for the sake of immersion including the Paldean content too *can't excuse character writing being inarguably fantastic and nuanced tho!*), but I was happy with what we've got nonetheless. Prior to this so spent hours and hours alone just to get 2 biomes unlocked.
    The BP distribution feels massively lopsided toward people willing to play in multiplayer
    As a side note the canyon biome also resembles black and white 2’s nature preserve
    I was also among the gang who waited until both dlc were out to play and I have got to say there is an odd inconsistency where you are invited to Blueberry Academy based on the premise of Clavell having heard of our escapades in Kitakami immediately after you battle Kieran for the first time. What escapades? Beating up a couple of kids?

    I really enjoyed my playthrough of Violet's main game. I quickly grew to like the characters and Pokémon, even though I wasn't too convinced at first. Of course, the performance was really bad at times and some places were really boring and empty.
    However, when I finished the main game, I had a positive feeling towards the games. A much better feeling than what I had with Sword and Shield, or the Gen 4 remakes.
    Both of these Games delivered well story-wise. (For Pokémon standards)
    But even then, I wondered what great games it could have become if Pokémon Company had given Gamefreak another year. Simply to improve performance and graphics. Maybe add more story and make general things like cities and Paldea more beautiful and appealing.
    And then came the DLC's...
    I'm actually someone who doesn't complain too much when it comes to performance and graphics in games. I also often like really trashy games. Glitches and bugs are also more funny than annoying for me. Like in this game.
    But the first time I was in Kitakami, I really didn't want to play for a few days. The performance felt like it had gotten even worse, and I had to take breaks every now and then through the rest of the game because I simply got headaches from playing etc.
    I think the story in the Teal Mask DLC is ok.
    I'm also throwing in the third DLC as it is an expansion for the Teal Mask DLC.
    I really like the legendary Pokémon based on their lore. It was nice to have some evil legendary and mythical Pokemon again. The story with Ogerpon and the Loyal Three was also well implemented. I mean Ogerpon's trainer was simply killed. Ogerpon has unexpectedly grown on me. Along with Miraidon and Chien-Pao, Ogerpon is one of my favorite legendary in Gen 9.
    But the Loyal Trio, while I like their lore, I'm not a big fan of their design. Munkidori in particular is one of my top 5 hated Pokémon in terms of design. This monkey really killed me when I saw him for the first time and then killed me again when he stood by the lake in his larger form. He just gave me creeps that I didn't think I would feel for a Pokémon.
    Pecharunt was also cool in terms of the lore, but this dance thing... It feels like there are 2 parties when it comes to this dance part. Some find it funny and others find it cringe. I'm definitely going with cringe. Except for the Nemona part at the end, I found it somehow very unpleasant. The character models already seem cursed enough.
    Carmine and Kieran also took a lot of getting used to.
    Of course, right from the start they had the problem of competing against the fan favorite rivals, with Nemona, Arven and Penny.
    I was able to learn to like Carmine more through the DLC's, even though she seemed rather annoying at first. (Which was also wanted)
    Kieran is a different story. I really don't like him that much. I liked him more in the third DLC, but it was a long journey to get there with this character.
    And when it comes to the Indigo Disk DLC, I can actually mostly agree with you. These blocks were really poorly designed. I also like the new Pokémon that came with the DLC's.
    The Elite Four etc. provided a good challenge.
    Terapagos itself was a cool legendary that felt like the third main legendary thanks to the Teracrystal part, but then unfortunately didn't quite live up to what it actually could have been.
    And I really hope that they don't discard this feature that you can walk around as your Pokémon. They should rather expand it further for a 3D game.
    A Poképark-style game would be interesting.
    Overall, I have to be fair and admit that Gamefreak at least tried to put some effort into some things. But I also have to be honest with myself. I wasn't really a big fan of the DLC's as a whole. I had more fun with this DLC's, than with the Gen 8 DLC's, but I often wasn't really that interested. I did the story and Pokedex stuff, but then I was done with the game. I'm really looking forward to the Gen 5 remakes, which will be more compact again. Given all the allusions in the DLCs, there will probably be something in the direction of Gen 5 next. I've really had enough of open world Pokémon for now. Especially when the Pokémon Company is so hard on the money train and doesn't give Gamefreak the chance to invest more time in their games. Tsunekazu Ishihara in particular is just poison for this franchise.
    I really hope this franchise can get itself back together. Especially for these Gen 5 games. Unfortunately I was completely disappointed with the Gen 4 remakes, but Gen 5 just has to work. We'll see what's announced next in February. This is a video about the DLC's for Scarlet and Violet and I'm talking more about Gen 5 again lul.
    But it was a good review. Even though I wasn't the biggest fan of the DLCs myself, I think it's good that you didn't trash them, even though Gamefreak probably deserved it. There was a lot of good stuff too.
    I'm looking forward to the Gen 3 video. Of course, with your words at the end, expectations also increase. Anything less than 5 hours will not be tolerated.
    Just kidding of course, take all the time you need. ☻

      Hey! Thanks for leaving a very well-thought-out response. I really don't disagree with you on any of your points. I'm also not a fan of the designs of the Loyal Three, I was really frustrated with the technical issues, glitches, frame rate drops, pop-in etc. - it's pretty bad. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the games "barely work" - I feel like that's hyperbolic, but a lot of people feel that way. I just don't think there's an excuse for the poor performance of the games. I think the Pokemon Company needs to be kinder to GF, and GF needs to reevaluate their systems and hire more talent to make something great. They've got the ideas, but poor execution. I really liked the DLC, I felt like I got my money's worth, but I would've liked to see it take advantage of the potential that was set up for the DLC. Here's to hoping the next games solve a lot of these issues. 😊 Thanks for sharing your perspective!

      @@saffroncitytv I wouldn't say that either. I haven't really encountered many glitches myself. If so, it was often display errors, small collision errors or graphic bugs. I think that Scarlet and Violet simply have the problem that they are technically the worst Pokemon main games for the time they came out and what possibilities these games should have because of that.
      Gen 1 was also a complete glitch and bug festival, but those were the first games and a different time when they came out. So it was more forgiving.
      Story-wise, for example, Sword and Shield is much less popular. But these games work as they should, even if they are rather boring.
      People automatically get hung up on the technically worst game. Other franchises also show this, such as Sonic with Sonic 06. Is it really that horrible? For what it should and could be... yeah. But unplayable and the worst game?
      This is also what Scarlet and Violet have as a problem. I personally would rather have a game with glitches than a boring game.
      Of course, the inner fan base sees that you can also have fun with these editions. Many people then just see: graphics are trash by today's standards, tons of glitches and bugs, and an already heated attitude towards the games.
      In the end, you can have fun with any game if you give it a chance. At the same time, you can simply not like the game. Many people have this view of Scarlet and Violet. Others, on the other hand, either just repeat what they heard or haven't given these games a chance.
      And yes, something really needs to change when it comes to the Pokémon Company and Gamefreak. I can understand that the work ethic is different in Japan and that no matter what Gamefreak brings out, people will buy it anyway, but in the long run, it doesn't do anyone any good.
      I really hope that the next games will be good.
      There has been a theory for a long time that Nintendo is working on a new handheld console or is planning one after the Switch 2 is out. Maybe Pokémon can then go back to a handheld, where I think Gamefreak would feel much more comfortable.
      Thank you for the detailed answer! ☻

I hope Pokemon get's their identity back and start pushing out quality content again. I feel like that's the first step in gaining trust back from long time fans of the videogames.

Don't get me wrong, the storyline and characters of Scarlet and Violet, along with the DLC, are really good! I like the story and characters. But there certainly is something to be said for Pokemon losing its shine. I liked SV, but she ain't easy on the eyes, I'll say that much for sure.

    I wish more people were understanding of the position Gamefreak is in and would turn to taking out their frustrations on TPCI instead. They are the ones pushing generations out at rapid pace that isn't tenable with modern game development. Realistically Gamefreak would need at least an extra year to develop and polish a game but everything with cards, the anime, merch, just can't allow for them to get that extra time needed.
    I'm frankly hoping that we see another Illca made title that is given a chance to by the fan base because we need a second studio sharing the burden so Gamefreak isn't having to break up their dev teams into multiple projects trying to keep pace with the franchise.

    • @saffroncitytv
      @saffroncitytv  8 місяців тому +1

      I agree, I just think that TPCI should allow GF to delay the games if need be, but when they set their release dates, they set them in stone. GF needs the ability to take their time with the games. I think that's fair to say that GF isn't entirely at fault here.

But the storyline and the characters of SV are pretty good. Definitely better than SWSH. But the technical issues are pretty bad, and if you're the kind of person who appreciates quality graphics and performance, you certainly won't be impressed with SV. The DLC characters are also really cool, but if you're a storyline person, the storylines are pretty short. Since you've watched my Scarlet Nuzlocke, then you probably already have an idea as to what's going on. 😊

      And yeah, what's funny is that I'm not even that much of a graphics guy. Most of the time, framerate talks and other graphics mumbo jumbo go beyond, i generally don't care as long as a game functions nice. But that's the problem with SV, that someone like me can take a glance and go "ew" at the issues present in the game, not to mention the crashes and glitches that actually affect the game (plus other smaller stuff that hampers the general experience as a pokemon game to me even if it was bug free and performed well). It's just... For a full price title that is being happily promoted like nothing is wrong, I can't ignore it's not a good look on Gamefreak's part.
      I see the vision, and yeah i agree the story and characters are pretty neat, especially coming off of SwSh having imo the worst story in the main series (though still cool characters generally). But it's not something I could ever justify myself giving money to and I gotta say that I'm moving with caution and just observing from a distance when it comes to future mainline pokemon games till improvement is shown.
      Also yeah, I'm pleasantly surprised you remember I was watching your nuzlockes. Will happily be there whenever you decide to do more of those

  • @grydon6422
    @grydon6422 8 місяців тому +2

    Great review! One thing I must say, since people seem to often be claiming Mochi Mayhem was too short and antoclimactic. It was obviously not a dlc so should not be expected to be one, but most importantly, I think it should be considered a come back for the small mythical event that were held back in gens 3-5.
    Get Mystic Ticket now, and travel to the mysterious Navel Rock island, where you’ll find a extremely rare Lugia as well as Ho-oh! - This is to be praised as being much much more and much better than GameFreak just handing out Pecharunt as a direct Mystery gift. They gave us an item, which unlocks a special event to get this new Mythical.
    I for one want to preserve these events so they are not lost to time, and have every special mystery gift event in one of the games completely unused still from gens 3 to 5, and will be saving the GS ball event from virtual console Crystal once I finish it. And I make sure to get this event item to a fresh Save at some point and not using it, adding it to the event preservation list, so it can be enjoyed endlessly when even these games are old.

    • @saffroncitytv
      @saffroncitytv  8 місяців тому +1

      I think they could've fixed the entire issue of "the ending of the DLC" if they wouldn't have called it "The Epilogue", and just released Pecharunt with all the neat content as just the new standard for releasing mythical Pokemon. I like Mochi Mayhem, but I would've liked it more had it been marketed and implemented differently. For the release of a mythical Pokemon - it's a TON of content, and wouldn't be anticlimactic at all. As the Epilogue to the DLC - well, maybe they should've left the title out lol. I still had fun with Mochi Mayhem though.
