This short comedy was inspired by someone claiming chickens were slaughtered towards the end of their natural lives. I tried to keep it fun rather than labouring points (like pigs being smart). People seem keen to let me know when they think I've failed, but clips from the film have had tens of millions of views across socials, and at least one person stopped eating meat after watching it (the biggest win). The reference to Chinese, like the reference to Japanese and Canadians, refers to inhabitants (and the Yulin Dog Meat Festival specifically) rather than the Han ethnic group.
COMMON ARGUMENTS AGAINST VEGANISM:
I didn't address these in the film as I was blissfully unaware people used such fallacious arguments to justify their support for suffering (while the aliens are surprised humans would still eat animals), but if I respond here I can just ask commenters to read this:
"Other animals eat other animals!"
Other animals have no choice. Other animals routinely commit infanticide, while some animals also eat their own young. Other animals do not wear clothes. The logic of basing your behaviour on what other animals do is clearly flawed, or we should have no compunction in killing or eating babies with our genitalia out (I believe this is frowned upon). Here's a great drama short that imagines humans copying the natural animal behaviour that is rape: • "Norm" - A Short Film
"We're meant to eat meat!"
We evolved as omnivores, but there is now no need to consume meat. That's just a fact. Please read www.scientificamerican.com/ar... and edition.cnn.com/2024/04/30/af..., which shows that the meat-centric paleo diet is a myth. The scientific consensus is that a meat-free diet is the healthiest with research dating to the 1960s (Adventists), while the Southern States made similar arguments for maintaining slavery: that it's something human civilisations had always done (true) and is perfectly "natural" (Stephens). Slavery existed for millennia and the majority thought it was fine so, clearly, neither a historical norm nor the majority view is necessarily the correct or moral one (instead your ethics are likely formed by cultural ethical relativism).
"Eating plants is no better!"
This runs along the lines of plants being "alive", "sentient" or having "feelings". Plants are alive but are not sentient and do not have feelings. If you can't see the obvious difference between a cow and cowslip please read this paper - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/arti... - which debunks the research that has led to some meat eaters claiming plant sentience in a desperate and obvious attempt at deflection. It may also be worth noting that trees bear fruit specifically to be eaten (I am unaware of any livestock that wants us to eat bits of them), while the argument that eating one life form is no worse than eating any other life form is to also argue people should be eating golden retrievers. Calling vegans hypocrites for distinguishing between the plant and animal kingdoms while distinguishing between different orders of mammal is beyond absurd. Indeed, this whole argument is so embarrassingly inane I'm surprised how many people have convinced themselves it has any merit.
"Animals are killed growing crops!"
Animals are killed harvesting crops though the data is poor (they count populations before and after harvesting so do not account for animals that simply leave when the combine harvester approaches). However, not only is killing animals not the main purpose of arable farming (and tens of billions more animals are killed in animal agriculture each year) but the majority of human-edible crops go to feeding livestock, so meat eaters are still responsible for more of these deaths than vegans (even before the animals are slaughtered for their meat). If you're concerned about creatures being chopped up, veganism would be the best course. - Фільми й анімація

When the spinning stops as it lands... unless there is both anti-gravity (required to defeat the gravity of what they are near or touching) and artificial gravity generation to keep tables to stuck to whatever is intended to be the floor.... it's going to be looking a tad bit messy on the first run. Brilliant script & skillful use of comedy. From one filmmaker to another: great work! 👏
Excellent short film. Very funny! I must, however, stick up for the human males (since they failed to do so themselves) and point out most animals eat meat: 2/3 of them, actually. The lion's share of those are carnivores, many of them ocean-dwelling species. The fact that humans eat meat makes them normal, relative to other animals. But actually, humans are a bit more advanced. Humans are omnivores, which is a group that eats both animals and plants, a relatively recent development in evolution. Omnivores tend to be more cognitively and socially developed than other animals (chimps, dolphins, penguins, meerkats, ravens). So, looking at the matter objectively, an outsider should be impressed.
Please read the description. It's a choice for humans. I'm also not convinced omnivorism is indicitave of advancement. There's too many caveats and variables, while you cite animals that are in fact more herbivore (chimps are 95% herbivorous) or carnivore (surely dolphins 100% carnivorous). The aliens were unimpressed by the fact that we kill and eat animals when we have the option not to.
Amazing
I wonder how they would feel about carnivore animals. Would they be shocked learning that cats eat meat ?
They'll find out after meeting the Klingons.
The limits of your cognitive abilities and world view are truly astounding.
I mean they did obviously acknowledge dogs and pigs, which are carnivores and omnivores respectfully.

Well, the aliens seem to know the animal kingdom. They know about carnivores and omnivores. The concept shouldn't be too foreign and incomprehensible. Flesh is very nutritional. And the leather clothes are a bonus, making use of the already dead carcasses used for food to combat weather.
An advanced civilisation would likely expect a species at our level of intelligence to no longer need to kill things just for consumption so hearing that we kill animals by the hundreds of millions everyday would be akin to learning that we're all rapists and killers who run around naked. So yes, a species centuries or millennia ahead of us would find it hard to comprehend why a supposedly civilised species still has barbaric practices.
This is hilarious! I find it bad that after all the hardwork this doesn't have 1million views yet and stupid videos get attention.
should add, that humans do eat each other. We will eat everything, given half the chance it's likely we'll try eating any aliens too at some point
